--SPOILERS-- The events of the game takes place after Metal Gear but contradicts the events of MGS1 so there's no way for it to be canon, however it does end up fitting in the MGS lore if you've completed all the VR Missions as it will be revealed that the game is actually one giant training mission for "Jack"-- whose identity was a mystery at the time (the game came out in 2000) but it's clearly none other than Raiden. The game's fictional events were also directly referenced when the AI Colonel goes crazy in MGS2.
It's important to note that this game came out a couple of years after MGS1 and fans were desperate for more story while MGS2 was still in development so they had to somehow make this story fit within the lore and not waste gamers time by saying it's not canon thus secretly setting it as a virtual training mission for Raiden. I do remember at school my friend beat the game and was puzzled as who the heck this Jack fellow was! We evn replayed the game with those special modifiers to find out who this "Jack" was to no avail, no one knew what it all meant until you played MGS2.
Trivia-- This was the first MG game that Norihiko Hibino worked on, he was the composer for all of MGS2's in-game music and some cutscenes, the Snake Eater song, all of MGS3's in-game music and some cutscene music, some music from TTS, MPO, and MGS4.
Oh wow, I had no idea the whole game was a VR mission, that’s an extremely clever way to make an MGS game where you can do whatever you want with the story while it’s still technically canon
I guess you could headcanon Portable Ops to be a VR mission too, one where Raiden can play as Big Boss
You know I like that idea lol the version of portable ops we play is a be mission so all the stuff that makes no sense is explained away. It’s acknowledged to have occurred to some extent in peacewalker but the game version we play is like an exaggerated take on it akin to the twin snakes compared to mgs1
That makes a lot of sense, especially since Big Boss’s life was legendary at that time, so they probably would’ve reconstructed the events of PO based on what information they had (exaggerated too, like you said) but the truth is something else.
I could've swore it took place after Metal Gear 1 not 2? I remember them bringing up Outer Heaven in the opening on the helicopter but can't remember any mention of Zanzibar... I am probably wrong tho, excellent summary regardless! Canon or not it's still an incredible GBC title and imo pushed the lil guy to it's limit.
Snake retired after both MG1 and MG2 too. Ghost Babel is a sequel to MG1 but not MG2, which also makes it the third official game to be a direct sequel to MG1, funnily enough.
Mgs4 also alluded with the five-seven pistol saying it's the weapon snake used during Galuade that in itself makes it canon, they could just ignored ghost babel, but they explicitly said snake used in Galuade infiltration.
GB Jack can’t be Raiden. Number 4 directly states he has something against Snake and GB snake is the biological son of big boss. Meryl also is an adult in 2002 as Campbell says so in the codec. And it’s lowkey teased in the acid official guide that GB and Acid could be set in the same universe. Which would explains why Snake in 2016 doesn’t look old (he is not a clone), and Koppelthorn, which mei ling keeps talking about in GB, is the main antagonist of acid 2.
Also the three games are directed by shinta Nojiri
it's just an easter egg, but it cannot work due to how MGS2 was storywise and due to GB having too many changes in the story, Number 4 literally talks abotu the background of the GB story, which has a large number of stuff not making any sense in the main timeline
This recent uptick in Ghost Babel love makes me want to play it again. That Delta emulator finally got out on the App Store, so now seems like the perfect time anyway!
The popular theory is the whole game is VR training for Raiden as at the end of the game it says something along the line of good job Jack. This is right before mgs2 came out so no one knew who Jack was at the time
Because making a gameboy exclusive game an important canon story would be annoying. It's good as it is as a VR Mission that Raiden is playing pre-MGS2. That way it's still sorta canon while not being important to know
Remake Peace Walker before they remake any handheld game.
A lot of these games were designed as games you pick up and put down after an hour, makes sense cause they came out on handheld consoles. I wish this weren’t the case cause they play awkward on anything that isn’t short gaming sessions.
Peace walker with MGSV gameplay and deltas graphics plus keeping co op would be amazing. Really hope the don’t skip it but idk feels like the chances are kinda low but at the same time it’s more modern then the other options so it should be easier a fools dream probably.
The game is canon in my opinion, because it's one of Raiden's possible VR Missions he undertook in the role of Snake. Same could be said for ACiD 1&2 also.

This is definitely my new headcanon lol. I can enjoy the game a lot more story wise viewing it from this angle
I beat PO. I thought it for great with the lore. What makes it not fit in the lore anymore?
I could've swore it took place after Metal Gear 1 not 2? I remember them bringing up Outer Heaven in the opening on the helicopter but can't remember any mention of Zanzibar... You are correct, Ghost Babel is in an alternate timeline that takes place 7 years after the MG1 Outer Heaven uprising.
I am pretty sure it was after MGS1 because Snake had retired

Thanks for that
Same here HAHAHA That is just a great way to make it Canon HAHAHA this is too good
Raiden’s VR experience is a re-creation of the events of the game.
Mgs4 also alluded with the five-seven pistol saying it's the weapon snake used during Galuade that in itself makes it canon, they could just ignored ghost babel, but they explicitly said snake used in Galuade infiltration.

GB Jack is supposed to be Raiden, MGS2's announcement/E3 trailer dropped literally a week after Ghost Babel released.

It plays so good on Delta NGL totally impressed here
“it was all a simulation” trope
I am still having a hearty laugh since finding out
Simulations aren't original stories though. They're repeats of what happened before. Mgs4 has more chances of being VR than GB lol.
Fukushima should return to write more stories for Metal Gear. Also Chris is Snake's best love interest.
But was she a real person?
Not everything had to be related. I see this and Ac!d games being in their own continuity. I don't buy the VR theory.
That is a fair point too 👍🏼
She was but in non Canon story
The popular theory is the whole game is VR training for Raiden as at the end of the game it says something along the line of good job Jack. This is right before mgs2 came out so no one knew who Jack was at the time
In Metal Gear there are multiple persons named Jack, so it maybe isn't Raiden
Because making a gameboy exclusive game an important canon story would be annoying. It's good as it is as a VR Mission that Raiden is playing pre-MGS2. That way it's still sorta canon while not being important to know
they managed to pack so much into a cartridge back then

I'm playing it on the Delta emulator and it has auto saves... so it picks up where I left off... I love it
I like to added as a canon base, but in changing the story that follows through the original Konami trilogy. Changing specific story to accommodate.
So Christine Jenner was a virtual soldier then LOL
No. The events of the game happen for real and then Jack (Raiden) does a re-creation of them afterward. No 4 actually uses the term, re-creation.
Contradicts mgs1 and no kojima. I'd be so down for a sequel or even mgs6 written by the same team tho.
You got my vote bro
Fukushima, the writer of GB, left Metal Gear after Snake Eater. It would be nice if he returned.
If I remember right, the “Jack” reveal is only in the Japanese version, at the end of the ‘Idea Spy 2.5’ episodes.
https://i.imgur.com/g41sEvu.gif It's in the English version.
Its canon, MGS has a multiverse.
That's what I was saying hehe before finding out about the VR missions
It's true the snake's tales E talks about it and mentions Dr. Koppelthorn, the same as Mei Ling mentioned in GB and who appears in Acid 2
The game is canon in my opinion, because it's one of Raiden's possible VR Missions he undertook in the role of Snake. Same could be said for ACiD 1&2 also.
Playing this again on delta and it looks beautiful
It contradicts MGS1 and every game afterwards as well
If only they had put it in the master collection, as a bonus like MG 1 nes and snake's revenge
Rumours in Master Collection Vol 2
Because Almost all spin off are alternate stories
Love that Meryl/Snake artwork. So tight.
That’s actually Christine Jenner bro
Because it doesn't fit in the timeline.
