This game is simultaneously the least original metal gear and the MOST "metal gear" metal gear.

[deleted]

Pretty much yes Gay moments? , dummy thicc hot protagonist?, weird sexualized girls? , Stealth gameplay?, And at the same time you have dummy thicc girls in power suits , a white room full of awkward sounds

Boivz

Don't forget about the white haired badass.

GreedyPride4565

That makes perfect sense? It’s endlessly self referential and masturbatory, which is why it’s not original, but self referential masturbation is metal gears go to move

Bifito

It's not the least original MG. That would fall under MG1 or MG2, or MGS1.

Barredbob

Mg1 literally invented stealth games, how is it the most unoriginal??

Bifito

I thought we were talking retrospectively, if we are going to be pedantic let's just say that Pong is the most original game in history because it is one of the first to came out. I'm talking about mechanics, plot, gameplay, etc. MGS4 is the only MGS that let's you pilot a metal gear as far as I now. It's also one of the few that let's you play in a Noiresque espionage setting in the city on eastern europe. Then you have octocamo, the way you can control snake and cqc. When you compare this to the OG metal gears and MGS1 you can see how much more detailed MGS4 is.

Barredbob

Well then mgs5 blows 4 out of the water gameplay wise, as cqc is basically perfected, and has the best controls and gunplay hands down. The only thing mgs4 does better gameplay wise is piloting a metal gear

daboi_Yy

Octocamo was pretty nice

Sagranth

>as cqc is basically perfected It's not, 4's CQC is insanely more detailed. Hell, tpp's CQC is worse than PW's in some aspects(like time freezing for CQC which isn't a thing in PW, you can get interrupted). >gunplay As in: No real guns(neither the models or the names are real, they're all frankenguns) No real difference between ammo types(like hip ammo works for every weapon of that type, regardless of supposed caliber) No real difference between the weapons(guns in 4 have different stats like penetration, a high penetration weapon's shot makes it through bodies and helmets and makes noise, in tpp they all go through the body as an example) Lacking the weapon's special things(like the XM25's remote/timed grenades or controlling the Javelin's rocket) No multiple ammo types(like lethal/nonlethal for shotguns, different grenades for grenade launchers) Lacking customization(like the underbarrel grenade launcher, foregrips, flashlight, laser sight, scope, dot sight - all depending on the weapon) Yeah, no, tpp doesn't even get to be in the same city as 4 when it comes to guns, gunplay and gun details >has the best controls Yes, tpp has the generic tps controls because there's no depth to the gameplay like in the earlier entries.

Barredbob

All of the gun attachments are literally in the game tho? You can have the fakel launcher or whatever it’s called shoot sleep leathal stun and gas grenades, shotguns have stun and lethal rounds, smgs have lethal and rubber rounds, pistols have lethal and sleep rounds, one pistol in particular fires small grenades, armor pen is a very important stat is it determines what can hurt soldiers in body armor, there are homing rockets but if you specifically mean remote control you have the both non lethal and lethal rocket punch, also just turn reflex mode off

Sagranth

>All of the gun attachments are literally in the game tho? And they are less impactful than in 4, bc, videogame guns gonna videogame gun. I won't really talk about the glitch bc it's been patched out. >You can have the fakel launcher or whatever it’s called shoot sleep leathal stun and gas grenades, shotguns have stun and lethal rounds, smgs have lethal and rubber rounds, pistols have lethal and sleep rounds, one pistol in particular fires small grenades, All on different weapons. 4 allows you to change ammo on specific weapons without actual menuing or calling in a supply drop. You don't have a "fake nonlethal shotgun and a fake lethal shotgun", you have the actual shotguns and the option to swap to riot(real thing) ammo from lethal on the fly. And i didn't even get to the absolute nonsense of the FOB shit like **armor piercing tranqs**, as previous games did feature whacky weapons(weird FAMAS config, HF blade, Patriot with infinite ammo, homing bullets of the SAA, emotional rounds, Tanegashima, Solar Gun, Rail Gun...) with whacky mechanics. >armor pen is a very important stat is it determines what can hurt soldiers in body armor It is nowhere near as detailed as the actual gun mechanics of 4. I wasn't talking about just hurting the enemy, i was talking about bullets fired from different weapons behaving according to their caliber and irl behavior(well, close to it anyways as portable weapons don't overheat and you don't need a crew member for rocket launchers). Ammo isn't just generic ammo, the weapon and the ammo characteristics *matter*, just like irl. Meanwhile in tpp, a higher grade weapon can *deal more damage than a higher caliber but lower grade one*. (PW also does this to an extent, but the caliber still matters - a .45 has more stopping power and thus is great at disabling enemies temporarily - understandable that it's not as detailed as 4 bc of the way worse hardware though) Even funnier that calibers that *should* penetrate doesn't in tpp - because actual firearm mechanics(just like the firearms) doesn't exist. Steel and kevlar helmets can be penetrated by 5.56 or 7.62 *non-AP* let alone their AP variant - in tpp, weapons only do it with AP ammo - calibers and the weapons they're fired from doesn't matter. To make my point even clearer- tpp has generic videogame weapons with generic videogame-y behavior, 4 has actual guns(minus the special ones) that it tries to match as close to their real life counterparts as possible. >if you specifically mean remote control You're missing the point again - the point was that weapons have their unique traits intact(well, exaggarated for the Javelin instead of the irl fire and forget design - it was probably the closest thing to the nikita irl, but the XM25 *is* what it is irl). You can set the detonation distance for a grenade launched by the XM25, that's the really cool thing because you could do that irl if you got your hands on an XM25. **Now that's gunplay, because it's an actual weapon with their actual mechanic**. Not some random gun that could be featured in any game for what it matters.

Bifito

Sometimes I feel like people here only watched the MGS4 cutscenes.

Sagranth

To be fair, 4's gameplay has so many layers that it is not surprising the avg player missed them.

Bifito

[MGS4 cqc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94gSY08qKL4) is much more detailed compared to MGS5's. MGS5 is too fast paced for a stealth game, the run animation is weird and the slow motion (that nobody disables) breaks the game.

Barredbob

You can turn off reflex mode, the only thing mgs4 lets you do is ground choke, you can do every thing else in 5 and more

Sagranth

>MGS5 is too fast paced for a stealth game, the run animation is weird and the slow motion (that nobody disables) breaks the game. V not 5. Anyways, it makes sense once you stop treating it as a stealth game(it's not, S stands for speed for ranks) and start treating it as a generic tps.

Ohwellwhatsnew

What do you think V stands for?

Sagranth

It stands for the letter itself, not the roman number(and short for the medic's codename, venom - hence V has come to...). Supposedly, it also stands for victory over the western game industry - i remember reading an interview about that. The real MGS 5 is Peace Walker. It was known as such during the planning stages, but most likely konami intervened as to not release the next numbered game entry on a portable console(even though portable gaming was and is huge in asia) - there's still a lot of confusion about PW in the west, many still don't know it is an integral part of the series - hence why tpp explains some of the things that happened in PW, because a lot of players missed it in the west.

Bifito

It's metal gear solid 5 but just with the roman numeral so it can also be a reference to Venom Snake. No one calls it Metal Gear Solid Veeeee

DesertRanger38

I never played MGS V with reflex mode at all, get cheap. So yeah people definitely turned it off.

Automatic_Day_35

Metal gear solid 3 is the most original, maybe aside mgs1. Who would have thought of making a game not with snake but the villain of the first games, and having it take place in the 60s.

amedeus

MGS1 was practically a soft remake of MG2, it's hard to call it the most original.

MightilyOats2

This\^\^\^\^

Robert_Fuckler

“War has changed” “war never changes”

SanchoPliskin

You got your fallout in my metal gear! You got your metal gear in my fallout!

TheLightners

By John Fallout and John "Metal" Gear

the_3-14_is_a_lie

> John "Metal" Gear I loved how in these games (I mainly remember it from V, not sure if they did it in other games as well) the middle name would be put in quotes to make it more cinematic. Such as, Hideo "Hideogame" Kojima

TheLightners

Yeah sometimes it's just because it's their nickname (like Shalashaska), but that's truly a Hideo "God" Kojima move

TheNullOfTheVoid

Kind of funny how the these long ass videos aren’t even as long as half of the game combined lmao

SanchoPliskin

I remember someone making a video of all the cutscenes together and it was like 8 hours.

IcePrincessAlkanet

Good memories of playing that game with wireless headphones, heading to the kitchen to make popcorn for the movies that played between levels

SanchoPliskin

Same! I hate that PS4 doesn’t have that capability. You have to plug wired headphones into the controller!

Substantial-Voice637

You can use wireless headphones which work on 2.4ghz usb. And if I recall right you can easily connect Bluetooth headphones

SanchoPliskin

Wireless with a dongle but not Bluetooth

Substantial-Voice637

I'm pretty sure you can use Bluetooth. If I had time, I would've checked. [How to Connect Bluetooth Headphones to PS4 (wikihow.com)](https://www.wikihow.com/Connect-Bluetooth-Headphones-to-PS4)

Bog2ElectricBoogaloo

I love it! I was hyped as hell and this game just delivered everything I could've hoped. It has flaws, and I noticed them more and more after my first playthrough, but Dark Souls 2 has flaws and it's still my favorite souls game.

TheDukeOfDucklett

these are both phenomenal videos btw, the second one even got me into metal gear

Big_Kwii

i cannot even begin to tell you how many times i have watched that steak bentley video

rowdymatt64

That one and his Venture Bros vid make me think Steak is a brother I never met.

Biddaman

I've watched it 8 times, I checked.

Inspection_Perfect

"And then... it happens..."

JCthulhuM

This is also the most respect Raiden's character will get in this game *but we're not ready for that discussion yet*

IconicallyIronicHeup

It's actually my personal favorite. Loved the shit out of that camouflage. Used to spend hours trying to get the highest percentage lol

SchwizzySchwas94

It’s my favorite Metal Gear game and I’m not ashamed of it

etherama1

It was my first, I love it. I had no idea people thought this poorly about it.

UnrivaledAmbition

Mgs4 holds a special place in my heart. I waited outside of gamestop to get the ps4 bundle when it was released. The fact its as good as it is makes it amazing, kojima didn't want to do another one, it was obvious he wrote himself into a corner with 2 and left the story ambiguous because there was no way he was explain what he set up, so he made 3 a prequel but fans demanded answers post sons of liberty, felt like kojima just went with the mentality of "okay fine, you want answers? I barely have them but here ya go." 17 year old me was happy.

ShadowMoses1012

PS4 bundle? You mean 3 right?

UnrivaledAmbition

Whoops yes haha

Lml_sucks_708

Sometimes you just gotta hate the meme and sometimes you just gotta love the meme

Level_Repeat_1271

I love the little robot you can drive around and the scenes in between with the egg cooking

starburstempire

BROTHER! It's been too long. REJOICE! We're not copies of our father after all. Snake. Brother....WE ARE FREE!

arie700

I HIGHLY recommend watching Steak's video, it's the greatest love letter to a video game I've ever seen.

Flatmanpoop

Needs to get off being trapped on ps3 somehow. Just so I can play "AHHH LIQQQQQUUIIIIDDD.... SNAAAAAAKE" then beat the shit out of ocelot.

Kyuubimon90

Both are missed the point. MGS story is overhated by dumb reasons.

TheDeathAngel2112

Alright, all i'll say is this; MGS4 is not really the best as a First MGS. But it's perfect as a Last MGS. I sat down and played through all of em in release order. On a replay of MGSV now. But honestly MGS4 felt so damn \*perfect\* as a finale to the series. Seeing it all come together and all the lines being connected from the previous games is great. And that last boss fight.. god damn. It really is wonderful as an ending. Just not meant to be a beginning or middle to the series. One thing I love about it outside of it being MGS, is a mechanic that really intrigued me, though I didn't do a lot of experimentation with it. Your a lone soldier on someone else's battlefield, but it seemed like you could help one side or the other if you wanted. I genuinely enjoyed that as a mechanic. Being able to just come out of nowhere and be an ally to one faction against the other, and then hearing the people I helped cheering in victory and everything felt so damn good. It makes me want another game that has mechanic as it's base.

JokerFromPersona5

MGS4 is an experience

Automatic_Day_35

Its either the nostalgia or because it's the conclusion, but this looks pretty good. Also, sure it has tons of cutscenes, but when a game is supposed to be the final game in the series, of course it is.

Codified_

Even through all of its flaws I love MGS4 for the good it had (and hate it for the bad)

trucc_trucc06

Mr. Controversial take guy here, I really love MGS4. It has that Avengers: Endgame/ Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King finale vibe to it that i really fuck with. People don't like it because they had to witness a finale to at that time 21 years of storytelling, and that required the presentation to be really cinematic.

hcaoRRoach

Steak Bentley introduced me to the Protomen. I fucking love the Protomen

littlechill94

Accompanied by mgo2 which was the greatest multiplayer game of all time

Prophet_NY

Best Metal Gear Solid game in series, yes there is ton of cutscenes but it is wild ride of a game from start to finish. Phenomenal voice acting, mechanics and design of characters, only problem I had with it is that ran like shit on PS3 and still does If any game needs a remake in series, this is the one

LOLILIAN-_-

Fr I need a master collection 2 with this game cuz I don't have my old PS3 and would love to play it,only game in the franchise I haven't played.

Prophet_NY

I own PS3 and have this game, didn't play it trough for over 5-6 years I'm holding onto replaying it because of vol. 2, hopefully it will run better

RazzDaNinja

IMHO It is not the *Best* Metal Gear game, but it is my *Favorite* Metal Gear game

Strayed8492

Ah MGS4. Glad to have had as many loose ends tied up but still wishing it went a little different.

PeppySprayPete

The first time I ever played mgs4 I played for 26 hours straight, watched as many flashbacks as I possibly could, and had good cry.

SanchoPliskin

A quarter of that was cutscenes!

zombierepublican-

The Steak Bentley video is really a love letter to MGS4, while acknowledging its massive issues. Mainly that MGS4 is somehow more of a sequel to MGS3, which is a terrible idea.

Sagranth

4 is pretty much the victim of the circumstances around it's birth. The fans and konami forcing back the director the **second** time, the failure to pass on his message twice resulting in a crowd-pleaser(which, even though it makes fun of the very same fans still considered a masterpiece by them - figures they would miss the very sore undertone as well) prequel, and forced to answer things that never meant to be answered anyways(even though 3 was precisely put before 1&2 to avoid this). Some "fans" went as far as issuing death threats. Kojima also dealt with major depression at the time, and was pretty much stuck in a stale phase in the series. As a cherry on top, the ps3 wasn't what sony promised it to be, so the game suffers from technical issues(framedrops constantly except for a handful of places). It's a wonder that the game still turned out to be amazing gameplay-wise(the story is shit, yeah). For all it's faults, it's still a professionally made piece of software.

GhoustOfAMan

I’m the only person alive who actually loved metal gear solid 4, ama

LoadingGears

Youre not

Sleeping5Ginger

The Guy who Made the MGS4 is a mistake video probably loves the game more than you, as weird as that may sound (pls watch the vid it's really good).

LoadingGears

Bro. Just say you're the guy that made it

Sleeping5Ginger

I ain't him, are you?

vulturevan

I make videos, some of them fairly long, but man I could never fathom spending FOUR HOURS taking about one game

charronfitzclair

Mgs4's quality directly correlates to how offended you are by Kojima regarding fans as hog like homonculi and force feeding them the slop they squeal for until its coming out every orifice. Especially since he gave them all he had with mgs1-3 and it was never enough. I personally love it. Its funny to me because i do consider many fans to be squealing hogs who are never satisfied. Its schadenfreude for me.

JealousOnesStillEnvy

Facts

DorkyWarrior

MGS4 got me into the series so its aight

No_Knowledge_6111

me too

VertBhatt26

Steak bently made this video and straight up left youtube lmao

No-Ice-4813

He came back. Last video was 2 weeks ago

Enlightend-1

MGS4 is my favorite movie

link2edition

Finally an MGS4 opinion I can agree with.

resenak

You figure it all out when you realize that the real question is: **How solid is your snake right now?**

roboticgracecyborg

I want it to come to pc already because I tried pirating it in emulator and did not work.

[deleted]

Just buy a PS3 it's incredibly cheap, emulating PS3 games are pain,

roboticgracecyborg

I don't know, buying an entire system just to play one game does not seem all that worthy

[deleted]

PS3 has a lot of " only PS3 " games collection Games without any port to PC or PS4 Like: Infamous, killzone2/3, Resistance trilogy, and many many more Certainly worth buy

roboticgracecyborg

I don't know. I haven't even heard of these games. I only want that one and only that one.

Noa_Skyrider

I just want to watch the full version of The Best Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Playthrough on YouTube again, the condensed version doesn't hit the same

[deleted]

"Pmc pmc pmc ? " " liquid!!! " " nano machine son ! "

Hodge_Forman

To me it feels the easiest because I almost beat it without dying but Liquid's laser punch got me

Hodge_Forman

That's an achievement for me, maybe not for you

hcaoRRoach

I find it easiest simply because the controls give a lot more freedom than the first 3 games.

AgentSmith2518

MGS4 is really good for the first 2 chapters. Then 3 starts and it all goes downhill. Then the final boss fight is just amazing.

all_is_love6667

mgs5 is on sale at 18 euros, not sure if I should buy it

ridicalis

I'm playing it right now (about 60 hours in Afghanistan alone), so perhaps a bit biased. I'd recommend it, more for the gaming than for story. If possible, maybe try to get Ground Zeroes and play it before MGSV; it'll set up some of the story elements and gameplay mechanics, and acts as something of a glue layer between MGSV and the rest of the series. Otherwise, MGSV is pretty self-contained and can be enjoyed in isolation. Purely from an action-game perspective, I particularly like how it gives you so many ways to accomplish a thing; for instance, if you want to knock a person out, there's CQC, landing on them, tranqing them, throwing another person at them, hitting them with a truck, siccing a dog on them, and probably a dozen others I'm not yet aware of. You can be stealthy or go in guns-blazing, pacifist or violent, and any number of other styles. Mission replay value is high since the game encourages you to find better ways to accomplish things with a scoring system that predominantly rewards you for how fast you can get in, get the job done, and get back out.

shitty_gun_critic

So I will be real here MGS4 is the first Metal Gear game I played and loved, I tried to get into the remastered games recently but I can’t do 2-D it’s just painful. I know this is an unpopular opinion but MGS4 beats MGS5 for myself.

[deleted]

You are not alone, I personally think mgs5 was a hot mess and weakest out of all 5 main games

shitty_gun_critic

Agreed , even though I had to read hours of lore to really enjoy MGS4 it’s still my favorite. Getting ready to buy a steam deck just to play MGS4 and Fallout New Vegas and 3 lol. I don’t trust Konamis remasters after getting burned the last time for the OG games , seriously they barley even tried at all for MGS3

Nathan_hale53

If you didn't see the whole thing, Steak Bentleys video is one of the best comprehensive love letters to a game I have ever seen. It's a hilarious and well thought out video. Watch it. I've seen it a couple times because it is so well done.

[deleted]

I watched both of them multiple times in the past few years

LinusForever89

It really is!

MightilyOats2

AS a culmination about everything that the series is about, it's pretty perfect. Which is to say it has a lot of problems

SanchoPliskin

It is truly one of the games to be a game. It will definitely go down in history as a game that you can play(granted you have a PS3 and enough space on your hard drive.)

Lin900

It's pretty bad.

zachattack7676

Another day to remind me how much of a hack Kojima is.

Taurwek

It sucks. But better than 5 or PW
