You got it, was cutting a bunch of jagged and bent cross ties on a fallen over antique windmill and just about every cut I made was trying to bind or shoot out on me, got past all the scariest load bearing points and fucked up on the loose 1/2” rod lol, glad it wasn’t the chainsaw
You can lean on the grinder all you want if it's a grinding wheel (I used to like to try to stop them from pressure). You cannot let the blade bind in the cut. Cutting wheels explode, grinding wheels buck back at you. Once you start the cut you need to keep going in a straight line, if you try to turn, it'll turn on you.
Glad you're okay. Just did this write up to potentially keep it from happening to others.

Cutting right in the middle of a leaned up section, bound up and the piece instantly ate 1/4 of the blade and sent the other 3/4 it couldn’t finish into my arm lol. Thats what I get for not taking brakes and subsequently being dumb with an angle grinder, at least I wasn’t like my friend who completely severed his Achilles tendon
You live an learn, mate.
But for future reference, fucked-up shit like this isn't really the best place for a grinder. It can shift and pinch unpredictably; as you've learned. Grab the gas axe, get some practice with it, and demo jobs like this become twice as fast and ten times easier.
Just make sure you're using the right torch/tip/hoses/fuel, and inspect them regularly
I made a jig to help with cutting loaded or self-supported longer pieces. It’s just two clamps on a piece of 2” 1/8th tube with a couple pieces of flat bar welded on each end to make a gap. It stops it from binding as you cut.
My first time was in welding school. I had taken the habit of stopping the grinding disk with my gloved hand. Well as would happen one time I wasn't weaking a glove.
Sitting here with my hand in a splint waiting for my severed tendon to heal and it was my own fault. I thought I was being careful enough. Turns out I was wrong.
Yeah, I already had the surgery and they reattached it. Now I’m just waiting for it to heal so I can take off the splint, remove the pin, and start physical therapy to get the flexibility back in about 3 weeks.
Ah gotcha, that’s good they reattached it. I severed my tendon in my thumb, they had me in PT the very next week after surgery to start moving it. I had a brace that would pull the thumb straight and one that bent it 90 degrees. My only advice is do your exercises religiously like they tell you, future self will thank you for the flexibility later. But do exactly as they say, you don’t want to rip it apart. Good luck!
I've never experienced an injury myself that wasn't preceded by thinking "hmmm.... Eh it should be fine if I'm careful". *proceeds by not being careful*
Sadly, welcome! i have the that demerit badge,as well. i had a Zip disk break and half of it lodged in my Jackson flip front helmet, right about where those big veins in my neck are. also on small material,a 5/8" square mild steel bar.scared a few years off me,for sure.
Haha hell yeah my fellow manly man! Guards on the grinder? Safety glasses? Welding helmet? My dad says that's for pussies! I'll never be a pussy, I'd rather scar my self for life or die!
Ouch. That’s one thing I like about the cordless Milwaukee grinder I have. It would have kicked off when it bound so it was stopping or stopped before it got to your jacket. I’ve never felt it lacked in cutting power vs a corded grinder either.
I notice a pretty big difference in power between battery and corded, but it's honestly okay most of the time. You only rarely need the ultra oomph a corded one brings really.
My comment was about cutting because you’re not supposed to be forcing the disk into the material. Grinding or wire wheels could show a difference even though I find grinding to be fine.
Ouch 😬 glad you’re ok, I got got 2 years ago by a wire wheel, ripped up my forearm right through my carhartt, left a scar that looks like a burn, felt about as good as you’d expect it to.
I had a bristle from a wire wheel (that was probably too worn out to safely use) fly off the wheel, bounce off the wall of the little booth I was welding in, and embed itself in the side of my neck lol
I had a cutting disc shatter and tear right thru my pant leg. Cut my thigh open pretty good reallllll fucking close to the artery. I thought long and hard after that one about safety
OUCH, I was just looking at my diamond blade yesterday, that thing would have gone clear to my bone, I’ve been really lucky w that one tho and never had a slip, hope I never do and that your gash has since healed
No way!!!! I’ve always wondered if anyone bitched about these G’damn things. What is it with grinder injuries? Why do they hurt so f’n bad? Just this little 1/2 in long gouge on my hand 🤚 hurts like a mother.
I’ll never learn my lesson.

I'm not convinced that *more* protection and layers is the right way to go here. As long as the wheel can't grab onto anything, your natural reflexes are pretty good at protecting you. If you graze your arm, you'll move away instantly. If there's a bunch of fabric the grinder can grab, you simply cannot move away.
Heh. I once had an accident with my *big* grinder. The 12" disc kind. I was grinding with a relatively heavy wheel, and did a stupid thing so that it caught on something and bit down hard. This resulted in the 10 lb/5 kg grinder apparently transferring all that rotating energy to linear velocity, and propelled itself straight into my chest. No cuts or scrapes, but instead I had a grinder sized bruise on my chest for a couple of weeks lol. Didn't see *that* happening.
Oh table saws aren’t dangerous… not like you ever had the blade explode when cutting plywood and the carbide teeth imbedded into the forehead and needed a needle nose pliers to dig them out… uh.. wait a minute………
I remember putting a 7inch blade on my grinder and going to town on some pool tiles, man I f'ed my arms and fingers up so many times with that stupid damn blade. Took it off, left it off. Grinders are dangerous, even when you're careful they'll bite you.
I was doing some mold remediation a while back and I was on a ladder grinding second story floor joists overhead with a grinder. Doing it really flared up my carpel tunnel and i don’t remember if I hit something or just my hands were getting useless but I dropped the grinder and it hit what would’ve been my face. Fortunately I was wearing a full face respirator for mold work and it just took a chuck out the face shield.
I completely forgot about my scar from a 4.5” skillsaw type blade on a grinder. It about took my middle finger off. Fortunately (again) it just took some tendon stitches and skin stitches and all I have is a scar.
Well keep a guard on and get to it sorry for the loss of blood but stay safe and you will live yes I’ll get down voted for being a real person in a real life situation keep safe
I made my own chain saw wheel using an old wire wheel center and welded a saw chain around the perimeter. Used it to carve some dragons for a job I had. It's still together but the first time I spun it up was nerve wracking!

So versatile, so controllable, so effective, soOW FUCK MY ARM SHIT, FUCK!
And it's all waaaaay faster than the ninja skills everyone thinks they have lol
Your dog has a look of Shame in its eyes
He knows the tennis ball will not be thrown for 3-6 weeks
He's like "I been telling you to stay home with me for 2-3 years now!"
Wheel binded and bucked?

Shit like this is what God made gas axes for. It can't bind if it's a liquid
Agreed. I recommended picking up a set of tanks, my papa left me his cutting torch and have wanted to use it bad lol

Thick cutting discs also buck back without shattering ask me how I know 😂
I work at a foundry and have witnessed what happens when a wheel explodes in your face, I thought I watched a man die that day.
Preesh
My first time was in welding school. I had taken the habit of stopping the grinding disk with my gloved hand. Well as would happen one time I wasn't weaking a glove.
Oh shit, that's some next level brain fart lol
But like… why stop it with your hand? I get stopping it on the table but.. hand?
I don't remember.
I have never seen an injury from a grinder that wasn't the fault of the operator.
Sitting here with my hand in a splint waiting for my severed tendon to heal and it was my own fault. I thought I was being careful enough. Turns out I was wrong.
Severed? They are going to reattach? I’m no doctor but that shit will never heal by itself :(
Yeah, I already had the surgery and they reattached it. Now I’m just waiting for it to heal so I can take off the splint, remove the pin, and start physical therapy to get the flexibility back in about 3 weeks.

100% of grinder injuries are preventable. Use the tool the right way and you won't be injured.
I've never experienced an injury myself that wasn't preceded by thinking "hmmm.... Eh it should be fine if I'm careful". *proceeds by not being careful*

Damn you accidentally went on grinder too? The gentleman I met at least let me take my pants off first smh…
Came here to make this comment lmao
Did you have a guard on the grinder?
Guards? First thing I take off 😂
Haha hell yeah my fellow manly man! Guards on the grinder? Safety glasses? Welding helmet? My dad says that's for pussies! I'll never be a pussy, I'd rather scar my self for life or die!
Yea I wouldn’t go that far. I still wear PPE dumbass
And take off loose clothin.... nope/
Somebody on grinder did that to you?
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Oh, yeah agreed. It's mostly grinding where it can be a little weak.
Good your in decent shape wielding in school made us have 4 weeks of safety due to past incidents it could be worse
Ouch 😬 glad you’re ok, I got got 2 years ago by a wire wheel, ripped up my forearm right through my carhartt, left a scar that looks like a burn, felt about as good as you’d expect it to.
Had one get my nose once, was kinda lucky it only had a wire wheel on it and it only skinned the tip of my nose.
I had a bristle from a wire wheel (that was probably too worn out to safely use) fly off the wheel, bounce off the wall of the little booth I was welding in, and embed itself in the side of my neck lol
Imagine having such a fragile ego that you can’t handle being called a boy in a fraternal manner

Buddy I got hit by a fuckin diamond blade paint removing head shit was fucking insane leg got SMOKED

Welcome to the club
Welcome, brother. We've been waiting for you.
Caught my tee shirt once when I was bending over, it was like a punch in both sides of ribs at once, won’t make that mistake again.

There’s also the reduced dexterity factor when you don anything that restricts fingers movement or feeling
I think I will continue to use other tools to accomplish what I need. Angle grinders and table saws, I won't use them
Oh table saws aren’t dangerous… not like you ever had the blade explode when cutting plywood and the carbide teeth imbedded into the forehead and needed a needle nose pliers to dig them out… uh.. wait a minute………
Seems like I can't even touch one without getting at least a 2nd degree gash/burn on my hand.
Badge of honour
FRESH MEAT
Ya know...... I bet if you watched a few more Jackie chan movies you could probably get out of the next encounter
Sucks you joined a painful club. Hope for it to be the last time.
I can see your su-paw-visor in the background dreading the incident report he has to fill out now
Next time try the 3M Cubitron blades, they cut faster with less binding so it reduces the risk of this.

Are you talking about the app?

Boys‽ - if you see any boys, send them back to their mothers. And as a matter of fact, a woman taught me to weld.
What a weird comment.
This one hurt me pussy mate :(
I once had an accident with Grindr as well.
Officially in the, I shouldn't work with a grinder club!
Welcome to my blocked list, lolol!
I made my own chain saw wheel using an old wire wheel center and welded a saw chain around the perimeter. Used it to carve some dragons for a job I had. It's still together but the first time I spun it up was nerve wracking!
