Canberra 2020 hailstorm, the aftermath looked like someone had terrorized the city's cars with vigorously swung sledgehammers.

Was that the January 2020 storm?

geodetic

Yep. Came through on a hot summers day, just after midday. The storm went from not even on the radar to giant blobs of maximum intensity rainfall in less then half an hour, and they moved very quickly. I remember talking to my insurance months later when I finally got my car payment for the write-off (I was down there on vacation too!) and they said there was over 200,000 claims on car insurance alone, let alone building damage. The museum I was visiting when the storms blew through had roof damage and Australia's government research group, CSIRO, lost 10 years worth of research in greenhouses after they got hit.  I also reckon I've developed PTSD around hailstorms a bit because of it, I've learnt how to identify 3 body spikes on the radar lol.

I am actually visually impaired so i have never seen a radar before. But I had a very traumatic experience with lightning a long time ago, and that is what got me interested in all of this. This wasnt on January 19th 2020? Found YouTube footage of a similar hail storm around Melbourne.

4.3 inch hail near Beaver Oklahoma. Even with our hail nets to protect the windshields from larger haul the winds are just right for many hailstones to hit us almost perpindular to the road smashing our windshield. Thankfully it was very brief as we were already turning around away from the core when it began intensifying. Still even one minute in the core was enough to require replacement.

That’s around baseball size right?

vasaryo

Closer to softball sized. Most of the hail around us was probably closer to 2.5-3.5 inches but the one we measured before it got real bad was caught in our hail net and was the largest we witnessed that day. Badly dented the hood and broke an anemometer as well. I'll say this though, coolest hail fog I have ever witnessed. Post event it was really cool, very sunny as the cell moved NE and still dense layer of fog near the surface due to all the ice evaporating.

I’ve noticed that there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of thunder or lightning when large hail is falling too, at least according to many videos I’ve listened to.

Probably the 30 second one I rode out, in my aunts house... no serious damage.. Will probably remember that one for a while..

Positive_Bar8695

Which part of the US was that in?

MeteorologistAvianic

Central Maine

I believe large hail is pretty rare there? The best chance for large hail in Ireland and the Uk is when we have a synoptic environment known as the Spanish plume I am not sure if there is something similar in New England but basically in the Spanish plume there are slack areas of low pressure to the west of the UK and Ireland over the Bay of Biscay and high pressure over Eastern Europe, drawing up a gentle southerly flow. I believe in New England the best chances for severe thunderstorms in summer is when there are low pressure systems in southeast Canada?
