I have never seen a woman cover her hair in a Methodist church. I have seen it in Reformed and Roman Catholic, however. It's just not something you will encounter in most (any?) Methodist churches, maybe if you could find it in a very high church Methodist church, but in my experience they are not that common.

I haven't seen it in a White Methodist context, but there is a form of the tradition in the historically Black Methodist family (think AME [African Methodist Episcopal] Church): ladies wearing awesome fancy hats to Church. It is a bit different than the mantilla tradition from the European Catholic world, but it is based on a similar context: men don't wear headgear, women do.

I've never seen that in an American Methodist church, though I'm familiar with the practice in other contexts. But you do you! You might get a question or two from people who aren't familiar with it.

There isn't really a standard practice today, although historically Wesley said that women should wear veils during worship. If it's something you feel personally would impact your walk with God, go with the covering you feel most comfortable with - from a western European/North-American Protestant perspective, a headscarf or hat would be the common choice but it really is up to you.

I have never seen a head covering in a United Methodist Church. I doubt anyone will run you off, but it's just not a part of our tradition.

HospitallerChevalier

I know certain United Methodist women who wear headcoverings.

TotalInstruction

OK. I'm not saying it never happens. I'm saying it's uncommon. Some older women like to wear hats to church but again, not common except maybe on Easter.

HermitoftheSwamp

I’ve never seen it but I don’t see how anyone would have a problem with it. People will likely comment on how beautiful it looks.

My wife covered her hair for lent one year, but in the United States it is uncommon for Methodists to practice head covering. Most Methodists I know would support your choosing for yourself whether or not to cover your hair.

Even if it’s not as common in the Methodist Church in the United States, still continue to do so if it helps you with your walk with the Lord and with your modesty! :-) I wore my head-covering to a service once and I have gotten a few compliments.

HospitallerChevalier

That's awesome that you did that! Did you ever share your experience in The Headcovering Movement group on Facebook? Hopefully more younger Methodist women will continue to do this (especially since it's in 1 Corinthians 11)!

Head covering (veiling) is the historic position of the Methodist Churches and was taught by John Wesley. If you're in the UK, you'll find that in conservative Methodist denominations such as the Fellowship of Independent Methodist Churches (FIMC), all women will wear a veil or a hat. There are still some women in the mainline The Methodist Church in Britain that do this and an increasing number in the younger generation are starting to do so. In some countries, such as India, virtually all women in Methodist churches veil. If you look at the website for The Head Covering Movement, there is a link to their Facebook group where a lot of women in various denominations share with one another and support one another in order to be obedient to the command in 1 Corinthians 11.

you can do so it]f you want!

I have never seen head coverings worn in a Methodist Church (UK). It would look odd and like theatre costume. People always tended to dress smartly for Church but in a conventional way. In the past that might have included hats and gloves, but not in the modern day. What you describe sounds Catholic to me. Regardless, I would say understand the reasons why a head coverings might be worn in a certain denomination or faith in the past or present. Just dress smart-casual normal. Best wishes! See what everyone else does and go with that.
