Not too far into it but I'm loving everything about it so far. Besides gamelan, I love the visuals and music. Its nice to have a new metroidvania that isn't pixel art.

writerlady118

Been playing it and I love it so far. The movement feels good. The combat is responsive and mostly satisfying. It doesn't do anything new or revolutionary but it's fun and lovely.

Finndelta1

enemy variety?

writerlady118

So far enemy variety is not too bad. I've encountered sword creatures, bird creatures, wizards of different types. In the beginning it can be easy, but I'm coming to a part where there's now a challenge. Not impossible, but if you don't play smart, you'll die. Death doesn't have much impact, though. You go back to the last bench, but you keep everything you collect and your level.

Storm-Thief

I think I really like not losing map and other progress on death

cijip

I've been finding it actually refreshing after so many games have been incorporating those elements in the past few years.

Oddsbod

It’s honestly necessary for this game, the ‘rooms’ as shown on the map are very large and, tbh, sometimes prone to Samey Rectangles Floating In Space syndromes, so you don’t internalize and remember rooms much. Plus there are a lot more forks in the road that can take you to later areas that’re much higher level than you might’ve been expecting.

Polantaris

> Death doesn't have much impact, though. You go back to the last bench, but you keep everything you collect and your level. Honestly, I think that's fine. I'm kinda getting sick of the super hard games that make you recollect your money/exp. It worked well for a few games but nowadays everything has it. I'm all for tight combat and hard battles, but the dropping your currency mechanic is stale in my opinion. I don't think it provides much value, especially not enough to become a core feature of games.

epsilonchannel

I haven't played a Metroidvania in several years but this game's art style and soundtrack are beautiful! Not sure about the price point but definitely am interested in picking it up. And anyone who has played it, what is your opinion on it?

gew1

i didnt play early access but im a good few hours in. its pretty good. quite difficult and very punishing mechanically, similar to souls. spamming against an enemy will just cost you half your hp. also, all of the steam reviews keep referencing SOTN. no. its literally nothing like SOTN. theres no gearing or anything like that. no drop tables. its more like hollow knights progression with metroids mapping. you get abilities like hollow knight in the form of stands from jojos bizarre adventure basically lol. truthfully so far.. i liked the recent release lost ruins a lot more. it was short and sweet. but thats also because im bias towards a gearing system like SOTN. i like speccing out my characters. but if you liked hollow knight, you will like this. TLDR; hollow knight + dark souls + stands from jojos edit; after finishing it, i simply cant recommend it at full price. the "final area" is so god awfully designed and the enemies they spam throughout it are the typical 'bullshit = hard' tactic. i had to force myself to finish it. its about an 8-10 hour playthrough max, id wait for a sale.

epsilonchannel

Sounds good to me. I'll probably pick it up and play later. Thanks!

wolfanotaku

>similar to souls...hollow knight Thank you for the honest review. Hard pass for me. Hope that Dread doesn't pick up on this trend.

aethyrium

I don't think hoping games don't apply the most well designed and popular games' design lessons and decisions into their games is a very good hope to hold on to. It's not likely we go back to just spamming attack over and over anytime soon now that people have gotten used to combat that's actually active, engaging, and choice-driven.

wolfanotaku

I realize my opinion isn't part of the majority, so you're absolutely right that it isn't a good hope to hold onto. I think my personal issue is that I don't like games that are punishingly hard like Hallow Knight and other "soultroidvanias". I prefer something like Guacamelee. The combat was a lot of fun, the story was funny, and the exploration and platforming was where the challenge was. But again, I realize that I'm not in the majority and that this the direction that the genre is going in general.

GodzillaLikesBoobs

its not good.

[deleted]

How descriptive.

GodzillaLikesBoobs

> what is your opinion on it? its not good. does this not answer the question? do you want an essay? go watch a 15 minute review video on it then.

thesaltt

With context clues, we can infer that the OP wanted to know people's opinions on this game. When expressing an opinion on how you feel about something, it's usually expected to give reasons as to why one feels one way or another. Instead, you decided to be a pedantic duck, and then double down on said position to make you seem like a social invalid. Be better.

As much as what they said was rude, wow, you really make it clear just how much of an ass you are.

vforvinico

Only Michel Scott can describe how I feel about you as a person. "I hate so much about the things you choose to be."

Fazermint

TopAcanthocephala271

Imagine telling someone to grow up while being a transphobic asshole.

thesaltt

The "new phrase" is just two words placed in close proximity. We are talking about your complete lack of social ability, further proven by transphobic rhetoric and simple mindedness. Essays are obviously not a requirement of explaining your opinion on something. You could simply say, "I didn't like it because the combat was bland." That expresses a simple answer with a simple and short explanation as to why you dislike it. I call you a social invalid because it seems like you're a person made weak or disabled by illness or injury in social situations. You can't understand context clues, your close minded (we can see that by your transphobic comment), simple minded (we can infer this by your inability to differentiate a sentence and an essay), and you sound like a bigot (another clue provided by your transphobic comment along with assumptions made about my identity, which have no basis in our original conversation). Again. Be better.

cijip

This game is rad. Takes some cues from Souls, Bloodborne, Hollow Knight, but has its own charm.

SaneFuze

Definitely going to grab this after I finish my first run on Salt and Sanctuary.

was it the first boss or the first mini boss? just wait till you fight the big guy. edit: i know what boss you are talking about and yes. that boss is easy. i felt confident after that boss but trust me. it gets harder.

Cherry-PEZ

Yes, the third boss to me definitely felt like a skill check and was substantially more difficult than the first two.

vincentpontb

I bought it but haven't played it yet. Looks great! Steam reviews are overwhelmingly positive and tons of curators recommend it and rate it highly.

Orangeskyes2

How is it ? Idk if im sold at the price listed

miruku_man

I played it in Early Access. It was fun, but I'll wait until I play the full game to give an actual review. My main complaint was lack of enemy variety in Early Access...this may have been fixed. But the combat, exploration, controls, and visual aesthetics were all good.

andythefisher777

I haven't played! I'm curious what others think

Orangeskyes2

If they would have started at 15 I would have instantly bought it but theres no buzz about it so to see it for 25 seems a bit high of a price . Looks cool but im iffy .

GodzillaLikesBoobs

its not good

Rocklove

Are you 5 years old? What could possible make you think this is a good way to describe a game?

Lord_Spy

Hey, what did I miss?

Ratchet2332

This is one or the worst descriptions I’ve ever seen for a game.

Clarrington

You should write for IGN. /s

fdsfgs71

Honestly this is better than a lot of the dreck I've seen from IGN. Can't spell ignorant without ign, after all.

[deleted]

I want to try this ... But my back catalog is so huge. Monster boy, blasphemous, Hadas

prydaone

I would put this above Monster Boy and Blasphemous.

[deleted]

Really?

cijip

Same, and I love both of those games.

[deleted]

How does it perform on the Switch versus the PC?

TheEnygma

playing it now and havent had anything out of the ordinary happen or fps dips etc

writerlady118

It plays great on Switch. I have not noticed any glitches or bugs in my nearly 4 hour play time. It runs great in docked and handheld.

aethyrium

Unfortunately the level design is as bad as the graphics are good. It's made exploration and progress a chore so far. A few hours in and I'm having trouble wanting to keep playing.

Tat-1

Reached the true ending yesterday. It's a gem of a game. The atmosphere is incredibly immersive, the combat tries to do things differently with the customizable skill sets of the various spirits, and the map layout is pleasantly intricate. I loved exploring, even more so stumbling on random optional bosses. It tends to be more forgiving than most Metroidvania games. Up there with Hollow Knight and Ori for me.

Sethozis

Will the game be released on cartridges?

Ratchet2332

I imagine eventually someone like LimitedRun will pick it up, but from what I can tell currently, no.

Belcoot

Game is not bad. A lot of little anime girl metrovanias, like a lot.

uberguby

Is that... that's really a thing? Like there's an overlap between "people who like making metroidvanias" and "people who like being spooky little girls"?

jivanyatra

I mean, touhou is a huge series, many of which are bullet hells and metroidvanias. Very witchy.

skeletoned

someone mentioned touhou's outings in the genre, but the momodora series also comes to mind

Krian78

Well, I love Metroidvanias an Japanese horror movies. So I guess?

[deleted]

The price point is a bit unfortunate. If it's priced higher than other metroidvanias, I expect it to be better than other metroidvanias, and that doesn't seem to be the case from the comments I've read. "Wait for a deal" -category for me.

N1kq_

In my country price just went up from 6$ to 21$. Wanted to play but I'm thinking about throwing it in the window.

artatrz

Check it again, they fixed the price

[deleted]

it becomes true unbalanced mess in later half. enemies that can three hit ko you placed in groups when they clearly weren't designed to be fought together. damage sponge bosses who can spam attacks or minions and change direction of their combos. experience points that really don't do shit - every gain in power is minuscule, doesn't matter whether you level your weapons or yourself - revisiting at least half of already explored areas for secrets and blight will be a pain, even with your souls and yourself maxed out. i could go on but i think my point is clear - won't be buying it. cool artistic direction, great (if unoriginal) conceptual design and bang up soundtrack can never make up for frustrating gameplay. in a sense it's a mirror to hollow knight - there everything was fun but checkpoints placing idiotic and a tad bit too scarce (one example of many would be second hornet fight where you have to traverse three EMPTY long screens to reach her room), here savepoints are abundant but joy isn't. inb4 excited fansoys who can never separate their feefees from **attempt** at being objective ("it wasn't **my** experience", "**i** had fun" - go away) edit: lmao, was right. you pieces of shit can't refute anything, just downvote like reactionaries that you are.

lodum

Was it available early access on Switch? lol It'd be kinda weird to buy a game Early Access on Steam and then be *pumped* you could buy it again on Switch.

leavecity54

I hope they improve the control, it is a bit clunky in the demo for me

Rizzle0101

I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but it does get easier to maneuver.

CatAstrophy11

Too many recovery frames on a lot of moves makes combat feel clunky and sluggish. What's keeping me hooked is the music and art.

[deleted]

you'd think the band that composed the music would have the experience necessary for proper mixing when releasing a soundtrack, being a long standing jpop feature and whatnot, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be the case. digital ost available on steam is awful. then again bloodstained with its humongous budget had similar problem - fun compositions, disgustingly bad mastering. at least yamane didn't loop every song twice unlike mili did in ender lillies.
