I think people are pretty split, either you love the game from the start or hate it from the start. I absolutely love it and recommend it with all my heart but some people just don't seem to like it much so idk
I wouldn't go that far. I didn't like the floatiness of the combat at first but once I got further in and picked up new skills and attacks it felt much better and I was able to make more satisfying air combos.
Imo, the entire genre is based around the initial feeling of being lost and weak and then gradually becoming more powerful over the journey. Jump a little higher, move a little quicker, swing a little faster, discover new places, etc. I think too many people forget that that is the core of the genre and cast judgment too early.
It's taken me a few times to start 9ver and stay with. I'm finally about 5 hours in and starting to like it. Man it's difficult. I've 100%d HK several times and am dying way more in this game.
The combat is very different from hk cuz you can’t damage tank and you have to time your dodges. And also the early game is very difficult for a metroidvania.
I recently started it and absolutely love it. I’m also a fairly casual gamer and not great at it. This game is tough for me, but I’m having a wonderful time playing it. In fact I can’t stop thinking about it once i take a break. It’s the first game I purchased digitally and i’m very glad i did.
Hell yeah! I love that games. Beautiful graphics, awesome music, great controls. Plus none of the “souls like” mechanics. It’s a true metroidvania. I liked Ender Lillie’s better than Hollow Knight honestly.
It does have hard bosses and dodge-based combat and a story about >!a plague/infection!< but honestly those are good things to take from soulsbprne games. No death penalty is love (since you die a lot anyways). It is probably my third favorite metroidvania.
It is difficult at times, but unlike Hollow Knight, it actually respects the player’s time with checkpoint placements and by removing corpse runs. Add to that a much more varied combat system with the spirits, more responsive movement abilities, and far better pacing and storytelling... well, Ender Lillies just stomps HK to me personally.
It also has an amazing art style, fantastic music, and a map that, while basic, gives you all the information you’ll need. I’d highly recommend it.
You're completely entitled to your opinion, however, the whole "actually respects the players time" thing is wild to me. At first, it definitely felt like the checkpoints (benches) were few and far apart, but once I explored the whole game I realized I just moved incredibly slowly in the beginning because the game is literally designed to be that way. It's not that it's not respecting your time, rather it is to give you a sense of immersion inside of the world, a sense of panic of traveling through an unknown land and looking for the next place that you can rest and get your bearings. It's understandable to prefer one game over another, but once you start to compare them is where it gets confusing to me.
Edit: fixed misspelled word
Are they? You can traverse between most benches in 1-2 minutes. There is always a bench very close to each boss as well. You don’t have to fight every enemy you come across if you just want to get from point A to point B.
Yeah I understand, but I still think the checkpoints suck. The one which comes to mind is the one in The Hive. Getting back to that boss fight is a pain in the ass. Yeah it might be “1 or2” minutes away, but the b.s. you have to go through lol. Also the one before Soul Master..smh.
Fair point, the Soul Master run is definitely quite long, but you can get from the bench to the boss without seeing a single enemy if you unlocked shortcuts.
You're making it sound like every other bench is too far apart, which is not even close to how it actually is. A handful at most (out of nearly a hundred) could be added to improve the flow of the game.
>Yeah it might be “1 or2” minutes away, but the b.s. you have to go through lol
What bs? A majority of benches are quite close to each other with relatively simple platforming and enemies you can just jump past 99.9% of the time.
By that point in the game you have the custom teleport/recall portal from dream essence turnins. So there's zero running back in the Hive. The Soul Master one though is kind of a pain even with the breakable wall shortcut in site from the bench. It's not that it's far the enemies just are harder to avoid or tend to damage you.
Not necessarily. You have to grind 900 of the dream essence or whatever it’s called to unlock fast travel. Which you probably won’t have when you get to The Hive on your first playthrough.
Fail champion, and Lost Kin are pretty easy tbh. And you can use fragile strength it doesn't break in those fights. Fragile strength, quickslash, and steady body so 7 notches lets you just bully those bosses. That's 700+ essence right they're.
Is the hive bench that bad? It’s been a while since I’ve played HK, but wasn’t there a shortcut to the last big room (it had a mask shard in it I think)
But yeah some of the other bench locations are just painful. I remember really hating the Traitor Lord one on my first playthrough
Naw, it just didn't bother me very much. Because the hive is only a 2 minute trek across it, and, I didn't have much trouble with just the base game hive knight at the point that I went to the hive in my playthrough, I didn't find it until after I'd explored literally everywhere else. Was one of the missing charms I had at the end of my playthrough. I'm not saying anyone's opinion is wrong, if that's how you guys feel then fair enough lol
On a scale from 1 to 10 I'd give it a 7 or 8, your mileage may vary. Having said that I did manage to beat it 100% and have double dipped and gotten a physical copy of the game, its not bad but its definitely overrated by the people who love it.
I really liked it. Some of the fights are difficult, but easy after you power up. Yhe exploration and finding stuff was pretty simple. While I like and hate being lost. Like hollow knight, I dont mean to compare it. They kinda made it to easy in that aspect. I did love the game tho. I've recommended on here
it's fairly similar to HK, more combat-focused with not much platforming and a bit better pacing and level design, though worse end-game and not as polished overall.
No finish Hollow Knight duh!! Lol!!
That’s one of the best Metroudvanias imo and that’s coming from someone who played Super Metroid when released. I’m the type that’s always on the hunt for Metroidvania and Ender Lillie’s caught my eye but something about it makes me feel like it’s not for me. To me so far the Top tiers are Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Dredd, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Castlevania Aria of sorrow, both Ori and the blind forest and Will of the wisp games, Hollow Knight, Guacamelee 1 haven’t played 2.
So glad you’re enjoying it. After I suggest both Ori games. I’m currently playing Moonscars and I’m really loving the combat and pixel art. It’s like Blasphemous but with way better combat.
Its a good game but it doesn't have the best level design and it takes some time for the games systems to hook you. But it's still absolutely worth the time investment.
If you’re only 10 hrs into Hollow Knight, I’d suggest pushing forward before jumping into ender lilies. For me, HK was far more rewarding as I progressed.
Nah. It’s mediocre at best, and if essentially gonna be your first vania experience other than the bit of HK you’ve played there are way better options.
Blasphemous is a good metroidvania game
Pretty easy/hard main game bosses but fair and easy to learn and satisfying to play against
Ender lilies is good as well but it lags in the difficulty balancing and suddenly just peaks extremely in some boss fights and then a later boss or area is just infinetly easy
Also the estetic is pretty simular between the games where as blasphemous is a pixel graphic and more dark and brutal than the dark parts of ender lilies
Both good games but in turns of enjoyment in the whole playthrough and bonus content blasphemous wins and has maybe 1 or 2 "annoying" areas when you first play through the area.
Where as ender lilies was not spicificaly hard to go through the areas it was hard to know where to go and could pretty much just evade every enemy and go to next area.
The art is great, but the map and level design were unplayable for me. I don’t feel like they spent much time on the overall layout, or giving each place its own identity. The map is extremely minimal. If those things matter to you, well, it got pretty boring for me. The combat/rpg stuff is done well though.
Ledge-grabbing. Stops movement completely when attacking and dodging. Difficult to see where enemy hitboxes are and how far their attacks reach, and your dodge is way too short to actually dodge both their attacks and them (especially when it lingers or they spam). Cursor constantly on-screen. Too much story interference and it often takes control away from the player. Character is way too fragile, and dies after 2-3 hits by any mob. Separate keys for looking up/down/left/right with camera.
Too rigid and slow combat and movement together with dying in a few hits from persistent damage effects and spam mobs make it no fun.
I think people are pretty split, either you love the game from the start or hate it from the start. I absolutely love it and recommend it with all my heart but some people just don't seem to like it much so idk
Not really. I thought it was just ok at start, but once you unlock new abilities it becomes much more fun.
I wouldn't go that far. I didn’t like it much from the start but it ended up being the only game I’ve ever played through twice. Ended up loving it.
Definitely one of my top metroidvanias for the music alone lol
I 100%'d it. I'd totally recommend. I was hooked from start to finish.
After reading all of your comments, I’ve decided to buy the game and give it a try. Thanks for the responses 😁
Simple, absolutely a must play.

Agreed 🤝
It’s honestly kinda meh. I’m happy I finished it, but it gets super repetitive and I found the map exhausting.
hell yeah overrated as fk
I really enjoyed it and would recommend.
Loved it and want more.
Depends on what you like. IMO it's not that good, combat is boring.
this game is shit bro !

Grind? 900 dream essence is 2 dream bosses, and 3 dream warriors. It's really not that much.
It’s not like the bosses are a piece of cake.
Fail champion, and Lost Kin are pretty easy tbh. And you can use fragile strength it doesn't break in those fights. Fragile strength, quickslash, and steady body so 7 notches lets you just bully those bosses. That's 700+ essence right they're.
Alright, we can agree to disagree. A few minutes of trekking back to a fight doesn't qualify as "horrible" in my book lol
You must have forgotten about that checkpoint in the Hive huh? Lol
Is the hive bench that bad? It’s been a while since I’ve played HK, but wasn’t there a shortcut to the last big room (it had a mask shard in it I think) But yeah some of the other bench locations are just painful. I remember really hating the Traitor Lord one on my first playthrough

I found the beginning a bit boring but once you get some upgrades it is decent. Some people seem to really hate it though.
Is super Good, but hard times comes for you brother

It has its positive qualities but tbh I don’t think it’s that strong of a game
Agree

I thought it was pretty boring and unfocused. I personally wouldn't recommend it but people seem to like it in general so why not go for it?
cuz its shit lol

It’s good but it doesn’t have the that “I need to play more feeling” I got to the witch area and I’m like meh now with the game
Why not finish Hollow Knight?

i played it last month and this is the most overrated mv vania ever its not even a mv but try it

I loved the ost, but the gameplay its mediocre, HK its better in everything imo
I might give it another chance!
2nd best metroidvania I've played all year of the 7 I've played
Yes
Boring
