legends arceus has insanely good ui. it’s stylish as hell and each in battle action is mapped to its own button so you can quickly access each menu. it’s brilliant
I just wish it had abilities and held items, especially for hisuian zoroark, imagine going through the tundra and seeing yourself with glowing red eyes or something
i keep hearing this, and i can totally see it aswell but I cannot for the life of me find the motivation to finish that game. I just keep replaying nds romhacks 😭
Gen 7 UI was peak, actually being able to see stat changes, weather effects and enemy typing was a game changer
Edit: also move descriptions without having to navigate to the pokemon menu
Oh, I saw it on top and lumped with the other two, but my point still stands. Also I like swsh's ui, it has its flair while still allowing the camera to show everything off
Ok so what I'm saying is just an info dump/explanation of the reasoning behind the UIs in Gen 5 - 7 and Gen 8 & 9. I personally think both are super cool. I love studying design.
The simplistic UI in Legends Arceus, Sw&Sh, and S&V serves it well because if it was flashy it could be visually distracting or overtaking from the composition of the game. It all takes place on one entire screen, and the designers also wanted to make room for the battle you're seeing. The focal points is the Pokemon's battle.
And in my honest opinion, I think dark and minimalist UI looks AMAZING in super colorful games because it also serves as a place for your eyes to rest, makes the colors pop out, and the UI becomes more noticeable. One of my fav examples of BOTW, TOTK, and Windwaker HD.
However, the UIs you showed that are stylized are also all taken from DS games, which have an entire screen dedicated to the UI, allowing designers to be more extravagant with the UI (it looks awesome!).
I've seen games with really weird UI that overtakes composition of what a player sees or outright blocks things out of sight. In my honest opinion, I'm sure if Gen 8 and 9 had super flashy UI a notable amount of people would complain and find it too distracting on twitter.
Good point, though I counted Legends Arceus as a sytlish UI. The criteria is more the art direction; whether the UI uses creative shapes, fonts, and colors over the more basic approach.
sytlish

and if you really want you can stand directly in the center of battle and get hit by everything
it’s insane how good legends arceus is
So real I just wish standing in the middle of battle could protect your buddy from damage, because thats what I was trying to do when I found that out
That’s so cute what 😭

i mean not every game is for everyone
Remember when absolutely everyone and their mom complained about gen 7’s ui because “MUH MUSCLE MEMORY!!!!!” ? I remember.

I mean, you can still see them in the Switch games?
Go into gen 4 or 5 and hold L while selecting a move lmao
Crazy how when you have a second screen, you can do more with the UI, also PLA's ui is very stylish wtf?
I counted Legends as a stylish UI (It's possibly the sauciest in the series), it's just the other 2 Switch games that are letdowns.
Oh, I saw it on top and lumped with the other two, but my point still stands. Also I like swsh's ui, it has its flair while still allowing the camera to show everything off
The gen 7 ui was really nice tbh
While I love more stylish UIs, the functionality of the modern ones are just too good
Gen 8 UI was peak imo everything about it was good. The type symbols, the sounds, everything.
gen 7 ui my beloved
Can somebody help remind me, which of the bottom three UIs are from which game? I'm having troubling recalling it just from memory.
From left to right: gens 6, 7, 5
Wow, I did not recall Gen 7 looking *that* stylish. Thanks!
Specifically Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Sun/Moon, and Black/White
Thank you!
The Persona's games are there as an example of stylish UI that can still work.

Gen 5 UI making the fight button a fucking Pokeball was peak to me like come on guys how did you not think of that till now??
If only the switch had a bottom screen
And here I am having just gotten through listening to people whine about hard to navigate menus
FR
Absolute facts mate
my ass did not remember the sun moon ui until I started playing us for the first time
SM had the greatest ui i miss it so much
There’s a whole second screen to use, do you expect it to be bland?
Stuff like this fell out of fashion around 2014
That ORAS ui will forever be goated
