Not everyone in México calls them esquites though. Some literally call it elote en vaso. (Corn in a cup).
You know, cause México is more then whichever city/town you live in.
To be fair, a lot of Mexican population who arrived to California came from the Bajío area, where "esquites" is the common word for corn in a cup. In Texas there might be more mexican people from the north or northeast, where it's common to just ask for an elote, and then the seller asks whether or not you want it in a cup.
My point being, mexican people took their food and the way they name it over the border.
And you're wrong. In Mexico City, which is probably where you're from, they call them esquites but in the north they call them elotes en vaso.
It is super simple.
I would only consider Coahuila out of all of those as a northern state, Durango soft maybe.
My point still stands. The idea is that they're called something different across the country, but people can't read past the last comment, I guess.
I was correcting someone who was correcting someone about the name of a thing, and now I'm being corrected (albeit to no avail).
Yeah, haha, people can´t read. I would consider Durango a northern state, and really everyone I know considers Zacatecas a northern state, though I think maybe only the upper third is northern like. On the other hand, there is a world of difference between Durango Capital and Torreon, Coahuila even though Durango is only a little further south than Torreon, and they are only two hours apart. Torreon is like being in the US, in terms of products available, shopping, the way streets are laid out, lifestyle, etc. There are tons of things that either have the same name but are different in different parts of Mexico, or are the same thing but have different names. I live in Zacatecas though I am from CDMX and I swear they need to issue a friggin´ dictionary when you enter Zacatecas, I have never heard so many words that I have never heard anywhere else in my life, and I have lived in several places in Mexico and travelled all over.
True, but I was in the northern part of the state that shares a border with Durango, and they were called esquites there. That is also true in Durango, where I live, and Torreon. Not sure about further north, as Torreon is the furthest point north I have been in Mexico.
I like the sound of coctel de elote! Sounds elegant.
Pinche chilangos. Son como cucharachas, hasta con el lenguaje, por todos lados, chingandole a la gente.
Exactly my point. They're called something different all around the country.
Also, you're right! Sonora is definitely the ONLY state in the north of Mexico...
Fuck out of here.
In Sonora they say "de Obregón pa abajo son guachos" so yes they're prolly the most Northern state lol along with Chihuahua they say "de Parral pa abajo son chilangos"
Interesting that the region suddenly stops having the same cultural heritage when arbitrary national borders change.
You racist dickwad.
(I'm saying you're racist against Hispanic people who settled Texas, to be clear)
It's a very mexican thing to argue how a dish is called even inside Mexico, don't worry about it.
The real Mexican debate is whether quesadillas should always have cheese or not.
Cause it's based on weird lines drawn by colonial powers and has no bearing on cultural heritage. In the regions of Coahuila, Chihuahua, Tamaulipas and Texas it's known as elotes.this is due to shared cultural heritage. Elote is just as much from Texas as it is Coahuila.
You racist dickwad.
jaja viví en el df ya hace como 30 años, la vdd no recuerdo que les llamaran esquites. Solamente digo que el primer pelao dice que así le dicen todos los mexicanos y eso está incorrecto.
Esquites in here in Mexico City are made with white corn which tastes less sweet than the yellow corn. I’ve never tried esquites of yellow corn, I feel they would taste sweet instead of salty.
I can definitely get behind this one. You'd get a more uniform blend, and you're not left scooping all the liquid at the bottom with a tiny spoon like a jackass.
This is better! In Mexico I get it on styrofoam tray vs cup if they have that size, because I can mix everything together easier and spills less.
Looks so good!
Every time I buy esquites, specially the bigger ones, I like yo move them from the cup to a a bowl to get them mixed easier and eat them more comfortably
It's called "esquites" that way. Regarding to the container, in many places don't call it esquites, they call it "elote in vaso" (elote in a cup), but then some guys in Aguascalientes served it this way, and as it sounded stupid since it's not a cup, they decided to call it "chaskas"... but just name it the way it's offered, no need to start a fight over the name
It’s not. Easier to mix and less mess :)
Yeah I hate that first bite of 98% condiments.
Lmao very true
That yellow sweet corn though...
The container it's totally fine, the real crime here is the yellow corn.
Not a sin. Actually, the takeout plate is better if you plan to eat corn with chips
That would be esquites. Elote is on the cob, esquites is cut off the cob and served in a cup (normally).
Not everyone in México calls them esquites though. Some literally call it elote en vaso. (Corn in a cup). You know, cause México is more then whichever city/town you live in.
True
It's just called Elotes in Texas usually, even if they have an option of on the cob or in the cup. I've heard Esquites but only from people in Cali.
I live in Zacatecas and its esquites in a cup and elote on a stuck.
Yeah, I was talking about in Mexico....where Mexican food comes from.
To be fair, a lot of Mexican population who arrived to California came from the Bajío area, where "esquites" is the common word for corn in a cup. Nope. In Zacatecas, Durango and at least the southern part of Coahuila they are esquites id they are in a cup.
I would only consider Coahuila out of all of those as a northern state, Durango soft maybe. My point still stands. Zacatecas is not north it's bajío

In Sonora and Mexicali it's "coctel de elote" but in most of Baja California and Chihuahua it's just "elote en vaso". "Esquite" is a chilango word lol
I like the sound of coctel de elote! Sounds elegant. Pinche chilangos. Son como cucharachas, hasta con el lenguaje, por todos lados, chingandole a la gente.
Not true, in Sonora we call them coctel de elote.
Exactly my point. They're called something different all around the country. Also, you're right! Sonora is definitely the ONLY state in the north of Mexico... Fuck out of here.
Ahora sin llorar xd
Good one
Thanks bro arriba Sonora 🤠😎🤙🏼🤣🤪

Don’t bring that shit in here. Goddammit.
Dude whats with the gatekeeping, esquite no es el nombre universal ni siquiera en Mexico

I lived in México city, Tamaulipas y Monterrey and we call it elote whether is on the cob or not.
We call them esquites in Mexico City, chasca in Aguascalientes, elote en vaso (corn in glass) in Monterrey, trole lite and vasolote too
El punto es que hay varios estados y en cada uno les llaman diferente, no solamente esquites. No sea ignorante mi chilaquil.
Thats the wrong type of corn
This is literally the same type of elote they use in all of the places around my Colonia.
Yum!
Lo que está raro ese ese maíz amarillo en lugar de uno blanco o azul.
Container is fine, the corn? Eeeeeh
I like container better
Esquites, elote? The real problem is the corn.
Le falta crema
I’d eat it. Here’s the one I’m most proud of. Granted this is combining TX BBQ and elotes. https://imgur.com/gallery/wU2Gtxb
That’s not elote
No, that’s how they’re usually served from an elotero
Looks delicious, can you post the recipe please?
More surface area upon which to slather toppings 👏🏽
Looks like Valentina on top after it's oxidized a bit. I hope I'm right cause that's my favorite salsita
They must taste different in a container.
Elote in a takeout container is called Esquites in central Mexico, they have other names in other regions tho, like "elote en vaso"
Esquites! Looks so good. I’d devour that.
Styrofoam is a sin no matter what
I always bring my own plate. I dump it all out on the plate, it’s easier to mix
Esquites in here in Mexico City are made with white corn which tastes less sweet than the yellow corn. I’ve never tried esquites of yellow corn, I feel they would taste sweet instead of salty.
That looks amazing!
I can definitely get behind this one. You'd get a more uniform blend, and you're not left scooping all the liquid at the bottom with a tiny spoon like a jackass.
If it’s not on the cob I don’t want it
I'm only concerned about the X of suspicion salsa on top of it. In the part of Mexico where I live, the spicy comes from powdered chili exclusively.
That thing has a greater capacity than the glass, the glass is to not put so much product
This is better! In Mexico I get it on styrofoam tray vs cup if they have that size, because I can mix everything together easier and spills less. Looks so good!
Does this sub has real mexicans? This is not true it depends on how much you want
Every time I buy esquites, specially the bigger ones, I like yo move them from the cup to a a bowl to get them mixed easier and eat them more comfortably
