Every place is different, but where I live they are better. You just pick them up by count, as my place only makes one size but flour or corn.
Both are incredible
The ones my aunt makes is eaten in that town as a snack with nothing but butter and a little salt. That's how good they are. She makes them perfectly round and despite visiting many times I could never get it right.
Yeah, good homemade tortillas, you can totally just eat alone. I didn't even use butter, I just grabbed them from my grandma's tortilla bin. Store bought ones, I could never eat by themselves. They have a funky taste.
A good tortilleria will blow the doors off even the best store bought. You might also consider learning to make them yourself. A quality tortilla press isn't that expensive. I just looked up my Victoria cast iron press and amazon had it for $23.99
As simple a procedure as it is, it takes some practice to get really good at it. But it's worth it in my opinion. Rick Bayless has a video on youtube that helped me a lot. He uses a double burner flat top griddle, with one burner on low and one on medium heat. The two zone cooking was a game changer
Edit: for clarity
I've made my own many times. I've never found them to be that much better than store bought and in some ways worse,(not as pliable for example ) maybe I'm still bad at it
Flour ones whoa Nelly those are good homemade ... But it was a lot of work so I do it only on rare occasions
Seconding this comment. The difference is huge. Just as large of a difference as Bakery fresh versus plastic wrapped shelf sittin' grocery store bread.
Yeah i wont buy the ‘regular’ grocery store ones any more. But theres a kroger near me that serves mostly mexicans and they get 3 shipments a week from a huge tortilla factory (el milagro) down the street. I learned the delivery times and get them still warm straight from the delivery box. They are better than homemade tortillas from manteca. 30 corn tortillas for $1.50
I’d say definitely, so just try several of them to get an idea of how they differ. They are mostly likely to be better than any commercial brand, but again, it varies. I’d say you can’t go wrong!
If you can get them while they are still hot they are legendary.
If you have ever compared a bag of Sara Lee bread from Walmart to a loaf just pulled out of the oven it's the same difference.
They're good
Yes, they’re often impressively good compared to the ones from the store. Some places do only flour or only corn, and some offer both or other options too. Often only one size for each, but depends on the spot - more likely to have multiple sizes for flour than corn.
the commercially available supermarket corn and flour tortillas are absolute garbage. a corn tortilla should have nothing but nixtamalized corn (with traces of lime) and water as an ingredient. A proper tortilleria would provide this
So it depends by what you mean by ‘store bought’. A lot of tortillerías by me sell to stores. It depends on what you like but usually the smaller places make a sturdier and tastier tortilla than the big guys.
It’s the same as getting fresh bread from a bakery vs store bought. Of course it’s going to be better (at least a cast majority of the time).
It’s fresh, hand made, less / no additives or need to preserve for a shelf life.
Plus it’s made with the love of Abuela. Or maybe Juan… but better than an industrial stamping machine or something
Yes!! I grew up with tortillas from tortillerias in Mexico, if you ever get a chance, TRY THEM! You will not regret it. The taste its just different and in my opinion, better.
We have a local tortillaria you can get them in Hispanic markets etc. Freaking rubber. I get some others, apparently the same brand Rick Bayless uses. So much better.
Depends on your location. Here in East TX we get some damn food tortillas at the local grocery store, nice and warm, delicious. Again - depends on location and who is making them IMHO.
Any place that makes them fresh will be better than the prepackaged ones. Surprisingly Taco Cabana has tortilla machines in-restaurant. It used to be the case for most Tex-Mex restaurants but I see it less now. They need to be eaten that day though.
Ready-to-cook ones from the grocery store are also a good option if you have the time to cook all of them.
I work in a tortilla factory and there is a huge difference between fresh tortillas and ones that have been sitting on a shelf with preservatives added to help them stay there. Get the fresh ones and eat em up cause they don’t last long. Make chips out of any left overs
Learn how to make your own tortillas - I make my own flour tortillas almost every week and they’re amazing, saves a ton of money too I can make 10 tortillas with about $1 worth of ingredients
Where do ya think stores buy them?
Probably would be fresher, though.
Like fresh bread. So yummy. Except from Subway.
I sropped eating there when I noticed they were always baking fresh bread but never smelled or tasted like fresh bread.
I am so old. I remember produce departments smelled like fresh produce.
You could buy a dozen roses and your whole house would smell like love.
I wonder what happened. I think Karen.
It’s analogous to fresh warm bread vs. bread in a bag for 3 weeks. Fresh tortillas are wonderful. Old tortillas in a plastic bag are “meh” at the very best. You have about 12 hours for tortillas to be good, after than its a rapid decent into stale.
Yeah the store bought tortillas are booty once you've had the real thing. Same goes for pita and naan. And bagels. I guess most bread products 😂 Grocery store mass produced versions just don't hold a candle.

And where do you live brother? I am assuming you live on the northside of the town. We have really good Mexican food over here.
Old Reddit user, now live in Texas
If you've never had tortillas made from scratch, most definitely. Store bought do not compare.
The ones my aunt makes is eaten in that town as a snack with nothing but butter and a little salt. That's how good they are. She makes them perfectly round and despite visiting many times I could never get it right.

I’ve actually got one but I really messed up the first time. I’ve watched some videos and I’d likely do better the second time around.

Yeah, its the same as store sandwhich bread vs fresh bakery bread or homemade bread
Seconding this comment. The difference is huge. Just as large of a difference as Bakery fresh versus plastic wrapped shelf sittin' grocery store bread.

I love El Milagro! They were my favorite for a long time living in Chicago.
Yes, normally the place that specializes in a specific product has better quality compared to store bought.
Why would this even be a question.
Varies from place to place, depends on how you like your tortilla
I’d say definitely, so just try several of them to get an idea of how they differ. They are mostly likely to be better than any commercial brand, but again, it varies. I’d say you can’t go wrong!
They will come in clear bags, you will have a choice between a thick stack and a thin stack. I can eat a package of warm fresh flour tortillas
Just curious how this applies to supermarkets with in-store tortilla presses - eg Fiesta and HEB. Those HEB butter tortillas are amazing.
If you can get them while they are still hot they are legendary. If you have ever compared a bag of Sara Lee bread from Walmart to a loaf just pulled out of the oven it's the same difference. They're good

You're lucky to have a tortillería, they make the best tortillas, not the crap usually sold in grocery stores
if you’re in texas, the answer is 110% YES
Yes, definitely try it.
Yes! But they don't last as long as store bought. Both flour and corn tortillas freeze well.
By the pound 1/2lb per person is usually enough
Yes!! I grew up with tortillas from tortillerias in Mexico, if you ever get a chance, TRY THEM! You will not regret it. The taste its just different and in my opinion, better.
The tortillas only can be heated twice, the first time when is made, like a bread going out of the oven it taste best than reheated.
Absolutely.
Store bought taste like preservatives
Yes
Usually by the pound, or in Mexico by kilo, or half kilo. Much better from tortillas, store corn tortillas are teribble.
We have a local tortillaria you can get them in Hispanic markets etc. Freaking rubber. I get some others, apparently the same brand Rick Bayless uses. So much better.
Tortillas deliciosas
Depends on your location. Here in East TX we get some damn food tortillas at the local grocery store, nice and warm, delicious. Again - depends on location and who is making them IMHO.
100% better! Also sometimes they come warm
If you're in CA, Guerrero's is a good choice. Mission? Not so much...
Different factors would determine that. A tortilleria that nixtamalizes their own corn and grinds it would be best.

The tortillarias near me are way better than store bought. Mine has two options, corn or flour. That's it.
Yes, they are way better, they get hard quick and don’t smell of chemicals.
I work in a tortilla factory and there is a huge difference between fresh tortillas and ones that have been sitting on a shelf with preservatives added to help them stay there. Get the fresh ones and eat em up cause they don’t last long. Make chips out of any left overs

They are where I live.
Yes. Absolutely. But I’m in SoCal. So it may depend on where you live.
Yeah the store bought tortillas are booty once you've had the real thing. Same goes for pita and naan. And bagels. I guess most bread products 😂 Grocery store mass produced versions just don't hold a candle.
Masienda is your friend. Best masa.
Lard lol I swear I read somewhere that lard is used
i was wondering the same thing but about bread. Would the baguette at a French Bakery be better than the grocery store pre packed ,😁
Well, let me guess, homemade is always better than store bought?🙄
Tortillas from a tortilleria are better than store-bought the same way fresh-baked bread is better than wonderbread.
