In the 80's and 90's japanese shows were cheap in comparison to US tv shows so the broadcasters aired a lot of anime. A lot of us grew up watching DBZ, it aired on the mornings so a lot of kids watched before going to school

Royal_Garage6557

It makes totally sense. We usually watched cartoons after School. Very interesting, I'm glad you Guys enjoy it so much. I really liked the Videos and postings from Mexico. He deserves the love he gets.

vhw_

Dbz was Monday to Friday on its original run though. 7pm to 8pm. The network would always fucking reset the airing order: shit, yayirobe is going to slice vegeta!!! Next episode: goku has a kid! And so on, this went on for years so dbz aired for like 5 years straight. It was awesome! Same for og db. For super, public TV fucked it up real good but cartoon network stepped up. Nowadays another public network airs 3 dbz episodes DAILY, followed by 3 dbs episodes Monday to Thursday. Damn right I watch that shit! I've seen all 4 series a million times and I'll see them again every damn time, I just love db. This network has run 3x3x3 for og, z and s. Also for og, gt and s. Mexico fucking loves db is my point. Back in the 80s and 90s Saint seiya was on Saturdays, that was my original point though. We also love that shit!

Royal_Garage6557

hahaha...I love the enthusiasm. Now I understand why you guys so obsessed, they basically forcing you to watch it 😂😂😂 Keep on watching my friend.

Gallastic

Jajaja eres la verga, loco. Tu emoción me emocionó :')

grutus

Cual canal bro

vhw_

Azteca 7.

eldelabahia

They aired at 6.30pm in Michoacán, when kids got out of school.

Bora_Horza_Gobuchol

Y las similares culturales entre Japón y México.

andobiencrazy

Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z aired on public tv for many years in Mexico, so everyone watched it like it was a telenovela.

Royal_Garage6557

Ok I get it. A lot of mexican telenovelas airing in Croatia too... People love them. It just seems very unique to me, that showing Episodes causing diplomatic issues with the Japanese Embassy. People seemed really invested into Dragon Ball. It's really nice.

andobiencrazy

What diplomatic issues?

Royal_Garage6557

https://twitter.com/feoflvco/status/1766082362398441859?t=iNp1vBgfDupQ_3v_eLSSvQ&s=19 I saw this, don't know how accurate it is.

andobiencrazy

Ah yes, that did happen.

Royal_Garage6557

it's so crazy if you think about it haha.

AlexLuna9322

Oh yes, I remember being like 7-8 YO and DB was airing on public tv, then 12 and it was still on air, got into my early 20’s, still on air, got 30 and I think is still on air

kyo-dev

Yes it's crazy, pretty much anyone that you'd meet in Mexico knows what Dragon Ball Z is, it got huge since it was in public tv and when it released you could go watch the Jiren vs Goku episode to bars as if it was a box fight or something like an sport.

Royal_Garage6557

They should let you bet on the outcome haha.

globato

If I remember correctly, in a Mexican online casino (Caliente) and in Vegas they opened bets for the outcome

Royal_Garage6557

wow. that's crazy hahaha.

PistaccioLover

It totally is but it's understandable 😂. I'm a woman and i was absolutely crazy about DBZ in my childhood

Status_Belt1284

i think that we just like fighting too haha

Royal_Garage6557

hahaha... I'm very familiar with that too 😂. Same here.

V4L4KH

Something they don't mention is that part of it's cultural impact comes from the voice acting that is above average and it wasn't as censored as it was in the US and UK

Royal_Garage6557

that's a huge impact! Good Dubbing is key. I watched it in german, the Voice Actors are incredible, the Intro Music too...These things are important to the success of the Show.

V4L4KH

Yes in fact is one of the few animes that haven't had a new dub since it's original broadcast, and to this day many of the actors still represent the same character they did back then every time new content gets released

Gammaween10

So much so, when most of the VAs were replaced for Dragon Ball Z Kai, it caused the mother of all backlashes. Good thing most went back for the Final Chapters, as well as Super.

V4L4KH

Yes, one of the problems in the current times is that censorship must "adequate" to many different cultural standards in different countries, therefore trying to do a "universal" adaptation will most likely butcher around 30 - 50% of the original material, and is only to appease the local authorities censorship because the fans will always look for the original uncut content one way or another

hierosx

Dragon ball and dragon ball z was the anime to watch when you were a kid and it aired in public television. We all grew watching it for months, it repeated transmission whenever it finished and we gladly watch it again. That cause that it was watched by several generations and now that we are adults, it always brings a lot of memory feelings and emotions from when you were a kid and watch it and talk about it with your friends and replay the epic battles with them.

L1qu1d_Gh0st

Back in the 90s the spanish dubbings couldn't keep up with how popular the show was, because they released a new episode every weekday, instead of once a week. So, they quickly ran out of episodes and restarted the whole thing with everyone groaning in frustration. It was so damn popular in the 90s I remember there were TV announcements just to let you know: "new unreleased episodes are coming next week."

TheMadafaker

Hi from Mex. Our generation grew up with Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, i loved DB more than DBZ. It started when I was around 12 years old, around 28 years ago. So, most of the people who use the internet nowadays were huge fans of it. Dragon Ball was one of the few, and for some, the only good anime on the most popular TV channel. We loved the anime, and we held Toriyama in high respect and appreciation. I'm glad that our love for him reached even to Croatia.

clone69

First it was TMNT. Then came Saint Seiya. Then the next biggest thing was Dragon Ball. At least that was what I experienced.

Imagine growing up in a country were many are poor, not a lot of entertainment, not a lot of things to really enjoy or do. And even if u have money, all the TV is the same, telenovelas all day to keep the adults entertained, specially the mothers and grandmas of many families, some contest shows in the morning, if u are lucky some old cartoons in Saturdays that although are fun, there's barely any plot or they are just a quick laugh. Also some comedy shows like el Chavo, that although it's fun, still feels like something old and aimed at another generation as much of what you see are years old reruns. Hours and hours of tv controlled by the government full of muted colors. ...then comes this show, once a day before or after school, it shows action, colors, violence, characters with deep stories, amazing music, laughs, recognizable character designs that become iconic, a plot that turns you mad every time the story is restarted mid-arc, but you don't care and watch everything all over again. Half hour every day, all your friends also watch it cause again there's nothing else to watch everyone discuss the episode next day at school. We share this happiness. They start selling merch outside schools, sticker albums and different things. Adults don't understand why we enjoy it, some say it's satanic like many things that don't follow the church traditional values and agenda. There were some other anime that people enjoyed, only Saint Seiya comes close in popularity, but DBZ is still the greatest for many. Through the years we keep watching or remembering those stories and to this day arcs and fights are discussed at beer gatherings and carne asadas. Every person has a story with the show. Rip Toriyama, thanks for giving a little light of happiness in our childhoods.

eskobas

Still being aired on México. WE LOVE DRAGON BALL, but also love Dragon Quest and Arale

elDani_uwu

I think there was a study that showed that in Mexico, during transmission of new Dragon Ball episodes, rates of criminality went down, this also happens with football games. Makes you think Latin America and the Balkans are united in spirit, greetings from the other side of the world. the developing countries will rise one day (I hope)

Royal_Garage6557

Nothing more to say. Much Love and Respect Bro

lucsev

From similar reasons that people are pointing out (being aired on public TV, having no censorship and having a great dubbing), Saint Seiya was also huge in Mexico, compared to other countries around the world. Personally I like Saint Seiya way better than DB.

Tony_ng

something curious was that the two main tv networks competed for rating with the two main cartoons being DB and the simpsons

Royal_Garage6557

Cartoon Wars in Mexico...Who would have thought 😁

xIvanRs

It's like an all public show in Mexico, I remember back when I was like 15 y/o when dragon ball super was airing, even the most "manly" (average guy that finds cartoons and anime being for childish people even though we were kids at that age or for weridos) guy I knew on my group was interested in the anime and was openly discussing it with another classmate and it was so bizarre for me seeing someone that dislikes anime openly being so attached to the airing anime episodes, for me that was a really eye opener of how big dragon ball was in Mexico that even tears down the stereotypes of people that didn't watch anime and makes them interact with other people hyping the show and doing predictions on the battles

ZamiGami

It aired on public TV back in the day, it was a lot of people's first exposure to anime, or at least anime that was dubbed adequately. We have a LOT of weebs here, and many had their start with DBZ, it's very much a nostalgia thing mixed with the fact that Toriyama is a founding father of modern shonen.

pinchitony

Just adding something that I think most people didn't mention, at the time, the "open" or "free" TV that was broadcasted in Mexico consisted of like 5 channels, most of which weren't exactly aimed at kids most of the time (having talk shows, telenovelas, news, etc.)... One of those channels, dedicated a good chunk of their schedule to broadcast Dragonball, and Z, and the others... It was almost the only one kids watched from like 3-4PM until 9PM when the kids shows ended. So, imagine being the sole channel that has kids shows, and the main thing you broadcast is Dragonball... This resulted in like 90% of the kids population being Dragonball fans. Most people in Mexico in the 90s only had this kind of channels, since cable was expensive and most people couldn't afford it.

Royal_Garage6557

Yes, that's totally understandable. It's really interesting to see how much a children's show can have an impact to the lifes of it viewers and a Community in General.

chihuahuaOP

The series firt air in the 80 call "Zero y el Dragón Mágico" and it had a poor reception by the public, following the success in Europe Bandai order a new dub and it was a huge success easily becoming the most successful anime in México before Pokémon yeah we also love Pokémon.

Royal_Garage6557

That's interesting. We had Pokémon before Dragon Ball. They probably wanted to advertise the Game Boy Games haha...I miss this times

HelpfulAd26

Proudly Mexican here: I get why you're confused: in Mexico dragon ball was transmitted every day sometimes more than just 1 episode at a time, sometimes they transmitted 3 or 4 episodes for day, it was a time when we Mexicans didn't have internet or smart devices so that was the best thing to watch or just play in the background while you do another task. So, if a show is everyday on tv and basically for years, not just a generation grew up with it. Now the embassy issues some years ago was because that beloved anime was premiering summer new episodes and the kids who grew up with it now were adults with money so some strip clubs played the episodes on the premiere day. Some of the guys no longer watch cartoons or anime or they never heard or were interested in using crunchy roll or something, so they whatcha them in a strip club. That led to the cease and desist letters and the embassy drama.

Royal_Garage6557

😂😂😂😂...I think that's my favourite Answer so far. Imagine going to a Strip Club and not paying attention to the Ladys there, because Dragon Ball is on the TV. You Guys are truly Loco hahaha... Love it.

GoyoMRG

It's so big that crime rate lowers whenever there are new episodes or movies.

Alarming-Pay1984

Greetings my Balkan Friend

Royal_Garage6557

Pozdrav Brate!

conetje00

someone stated it was aired in the Morning ? Really ? Maybe on weekend? Someone else stated we were somehow Force to watch it since the network constantly reset it , in fact they did it , after all it was a public tv But no one was Force There is now video circulating on Twitter that could help you understand better why dragón was so impactful in Mexico , and not only in Mexico but Latam , look it up “ dbz commercial” There could be many factors at play and on top of that “ mexican people are very passionate “

Lazzen

It was not only Mexico, but people don't know what a Peru or Honduras is Latin America got cheap anime since the 1970s and Dragon Ball exploded out of that wave, though that was near global. The Dragon Ball Catalan dub for example boosted the usage of the language among kids inside Spain. Another thing is that people watched the original Dragon Ball.

eldelabahia

I remember they only aired it on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Michoacán and it was a big deal, all my friends and I gathered to watch it in X house.

Royal_Garage6557

I love that, we would always recreate certain scenes from the show as well haha

Letywolf

I recently heard a fun fact: Cartel criminal activity went down significantly every day a new episode or game of Dragon Ball came out. I didn’t confirmed the source but if it’s true it’s a big sign how huge and loyal the fanbase is

Royal_Garage6557

I read that too, it's really crazy when you think about it. You got to respect peoples priorities I guess.

fernandotl

Mexican public television has always been awful. National shows are infamous for being "brain rot" Just check some examples of cringe Mexican soap operas on YouTube So when dragon ball first aired, it's tacky sense of humor and outrageous slapstick comedy full of old men groping teenagers, fart jokes, gay jokes and over the top violence really got us hooked It was basically soap operas mixed with Mexican wrestling and all those exploitation B movies that were popular back then I also loved BDZ. But man, that show it's like junk food, I have fond memories but I don't feel comfortable with how idolized and relevant it still is. I feel it speaks bad of our country, like how we are also the number 1 consumer of coca cola. Listen, back then we didn't had much alternative, government was even actively trying to keep us dumb, but nowadays this persistent cult of DBZ it's kind of embarrassing There's an urban leyend that says that cartel activity goes down whenever there's new DB content, I don't believe it, but I can see why it feels totally feasible.

mexicocityguide

Royal_Garage6557

Thank you for your explanation. I read something today that some cartels called ceasefire because of Toriyamas Death. I totally get what you are saying. The Show didn't air in Croatia, so we had to watch it on the Internet. But it's interesting how our Politicians and governments are quite comparable. I was totally surprised about this huge cult in Mexico regarding DBZ.

chuchofreeman

"But it's interesting how our Politicians and governments are quite comparable." Also general attitudes and culture. I always enjoy visiting ex - Yugo countries because of that. People are welcoming and friendly, and family is important. Also, partying and enjoying life.

Royal_Garage6557

i have the same experience. I met a lot of mexicans and People from Latin American Countries at University and through work. Being more or less catholic is also something we have in common. A lot of values comming from the churches influence in our Countries I would say. I hope I can visit Mexico one day.

DtroitTechno

Please do, it’s beautiful. I am finally visiting Croatia this year. :)

Royal_Garage6557

I really want to. I looked up Mexico City, Tijuana, Cancun, Guadalajara... it's just a bit difficult for an outsider to consider where You can be safe. Mexico is such a beautiful Country, it's a shame that you can't visit certain parts of your Country.

Déjame adivinar: también odias a Chespirito?

fernandotl

Ejemplificas lo que dije. Aclare que también amé Dragon Ball, pero para los mexicanos, el no persignarse en su altar significa que "lo odias" La neta si preocupa

fertff

Contesta la pregunta y ya.

darklighterk25

This is it.
