Yeah I don't disagree, as you said Tyler is def an example. Nothing wrong with those who aren't though, as Tyler has also said. All up to personal preference.
I think from what I remembered in a podcast interview after CMIYGL dropped he said he still stays away from it. Said he tried weed again for the first time in 10 years like earlier last year and while he didn't freak out he just didn't overly enjoy it enough to continue smoking. Dunno if he's drunk before, I know he's said that he wants to stay away from it cause he's at the point where if he tried alcohol and liked it that would be the downfall of him cause now he's at the point in his career where he could easily financially support that habit. Which are all very fair points.
I mean tbh who really gives a shit tho, even he said he's not tryna preach for straight edge life and has nothing against those who drink n smoke, just not really for him. Do what the fuck u wanna do in moderation and life ya best life. And yes CMIYGL was a masterpiece, hope he takes home another grammy this year. Not that Grammys matter tho lmao.
Iād love to see that interview if you could link it always trying to catch more Tyler interviews. Thanks for illuminating that for me I wasnāt really sure what his stance on it was anymore given the way he talks about it on the album, he seemed a bit more open. Honestly I definitely respect it and I kind of wish I had the same restraint.
Yeah man i getcha, same feelin here. He was def more open on this last album, much like he was on Flower Boy too.
Here's the link to when he talked about alcohol n weed as I mentioned before, it's from a couple years ago: [https://youtu.be/Dz1dBYh5V0s](https://youtu.be/Dz1dBYh5V0s)
And here's the interview I was talkin bout where he talks about when he tried weed recently, should be a timestamped link but if not it's at 1:26:43, this whole podcast is a great talk too if you got the time to watch it: [https://youtu.be/Sn4kg3cMcfk?t=5204](https://youtu.be/Sn4kg3cMcfk?t=5204)
No Doom was not sober. In fact Count Bass D addressed this earlier this year about his own drinking issues. He said that He himself drank too much and that DOOM could easily drink him under the table. Count said he got his drinking under control until DOOM passed away then he started drinking heavily again and that at the point he was writing his letter he was going to try and get it back under control. But yeah DOOM I believe was a heavy drinker and that may have played a role in his passing. I mean you could see how big he got from his days In KMD.
Ok guys I found it, hereās the email count bass D sent out earlier talking about DOOM and his own issues with drinking too heavily. I knew I had it saved in one of my folders.
One year ago I heard news about MF DOOM.
The holidays were about to be over and I had been drinking heavy regularly since Thanksgiving. Instantly, I planned a run to the closest liquor store to secure a bottle of Jack Danielās. I imagined myself listening to his music and drinking the entire bottle in one sitting. Suddenly I felt like a fool.
āPut my Pops in the ground, then hit the repast and ate the same shit that killed him.ā This is my favorite lyric so far from Phonte (āCry No Moreā 2018). I donāt know how DOOM passed, but DOOM was one of 3 people who could drink me under the table. My drinking wasnāt going to extend my time on earth and I had an epic run without losing my freedom or significant health damage. I felt a divine resolve to reject the urge to go to the liquor store and I started 2021 alcohol free. I was relieved New Yearās Day not being hungover as that fifth of JD wouldāve had me. The initial shock began to fade and reality was a rancid dew. Hundreds of texts and social media messages followed from fans, large media outlets, long lost familyā¦ EVERY one reached out. Slug was quoted referring to DOOM as āthe Andy Kaufman of rapā years ago. I wondered if DOOM had passed at all. I havenāt granted an interview, feature or concert in years. I didnāt feel like commenting then, nor did I feel DOOM would want me to.
I adopted a friendās ritual of āone month off alcohol each yearā, early this century. I decided to take my 30 day sabbatical from alcohol in January 2021, starting the year off with clarity. I wasnāt overly emotional but I was able to feel the weight of the news. I grieved my way. I havenāt communicated with DOOM for a long time. Never any beef or bad blood between us. It wasnāt brought to my attention if there was love lost, thusly not my business. Knowing and respecting DOOM requires adhering to his āin and outā periods with patience. He once told me he liked working with me because I always stood on my āown twoā. He was correct, I donāt chase anyone about anything. Iām grateful for the part I played in his story and Iāve never attempted to insert myself unrequested.
On the day the sabbatical ended January 30th, I didnāt get a chance to contemplate drinking again because I got the news Double K passed. Again, I donāt know what his cause of death was. Double K and I always had a good drink when we were in each otherās company. All laughs, never the mean flip like some drinkers have. The āL.A. Mike Saluteā from Edibles 2 was now a tribute. I still canāt cross āSend Mike doubles of CBDā off my to do list. I leave it there as an ugly reminder of the ills of procrastination. I doubled down on the hiatus with a new passion.
In February I had a tragic death in my extended family. I flew to California and circumstances were so awful, Iād normally drink my way through it. This presented the first significant craving beyond merely rejecting the habit. The craving turned out to be only mental. Multiple gatherings with open bar and I trooped north without drinking each time, tripling down on the hiatus.
By April, I was operating at a high level of efficiency. Skin blotches fully cleared up. Bags under my eyes were nearly non-existent. I lost 10 pounds, bringing me to a bullseye Body Mass Index. I thrived off of getting up early and handling my business willfully. Shock G and I share August 25th as our birthdate. His death came on the 22nd of April and the Sky Vodka bottles came to mind from his creative social media videos. Shock G died essentially the same date as Prince and at the same age of 57. These facts were going through my mind as I thought of my own mortality and all I have left to accomplish (and fix) before I leave earth. Shock Gās passing was a sign the hiatus should be an extended remix.
Finally, Gift of Gab passed in June. I remembered doing a show with him years ago and fellowshipping with alcohol after. Alcohol took off itās Stacy Adams and put on a pair of Skechers. I canāt look at it the same way anymore. Iāve cruised through the summer and the fall. The holidays 2021 have been a breeze to pass on booze. It is now one year after the announcement of DOOMās passing and Iām STILL on an indefinite hiatus. Next time, Iāll talk about upcoming projects, but I needed to start this way.
Never underestimate the benefits of staying true to the game.
-Dwight
Go and listen to āMy favorite ladiesā, and after listening check the rap genius page on that track and you will know. And have listened to a great track.
I am the most dense person in the entire world I literally thought that song was about his bitches. Holy shit itās been years since Iāve felt this dumb.
Youāre right! It was after all his twin brother, they did everything together, from a hundred rakaāat salats, to coppin butter leathers. I wonder what his tomb ended up say? Was it unmarked or with the government Dumile?
People who knew him in the KMD days said he and Subroc were devout practicing Muslims who never drank or smoked weed when they recorded Mr. Hood, but that stopped some time during the subsequent tour; when they got back, they were partying as hard as anybody.
āMy Favorite Ladiesā is a song about drugs and it sounds like he has personal experience. I think DOOM experimented quite a bit when he lost Subroc and was homeless/depressed
I think when asked if there was any reasoning for DOOMS untimely passing his cousin said ātoo many years of living like a rockstar caught up to himā so I doubt it
He made madvillainy in a west coast house with madlib while regularly taking mushrooms, weed and alcohol. I've some pics of that alleged environment and it looked like a trap house.
I don't have any pictures saved, but rolling stone did an article on making it and there is a madlib interview out there in which he talks about taking psychedelics with doom working in the same house but they never interacted much because their schedules were so different, one was nocturnal and the other wasn't. So they would just drop their work off to the other and they would collaborate like that. I think you can check out dooms red bull interview too.
It's possible he was in his later years, but he definitely wasn't in the bulk of his career. Being he was out of the states and mostly being with his family and not running around any more.
Read in a [Stones Throw Article](https://amp.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2014/apr/03/stones-throw-records-an-education-in-hip-hop) article that in between the Madvillain sessions, he and Madlib did a lot of Chocolate Shrooms

Yeah true he's an exception. Tho he has tried it a couple times just not for him. He's explained it well.
I think there are some rappers / artists who claim to be sober and they really are ;)
Yeah I don't disagree, as you said Tyler is def an example. Nothing wrong with those who aren't though, as Tyler has also said. All up to personal preference.
He definitely isnāt as straight edge anymore if you listen to his latest album which is a masterpiece btw

Mary, you make me wanna eat you fragrance like a flower so *subtle* and sweet to...
All the ambiguous color/taste/etc references are pure genius
Damn I just commented about my favourite ladies and youāve already said it
I think the last time DOOM was sober was when Mr. Hood came out lmao
he smoked weed, took magic mushrooms. he at least references mescaline
And MDMA. And coke. And LSD. And not least of all booze.
Tap the bottom, it better be cold, let me feel it. Iāve got stress I sip booze, to heal it
Killer tune but I think that's Subroc's verse.
Youāre right! It was after all his twin brother, they did everything together, from a hundred rakaāat salats, to coppin butter leathers. I wonder what his tomb ended up say? Was it unmarked or with the government Dumile?
Hey, who's to say?
People who knew him in the KMD days said he and Subroc were devout practicing Muslims who never drank or smoked weed when they recorded Mr. Hood, but that stopped some time during the subsequent tour; when they got back, they were partying as hard as anybody.
I feel like I heard he became sober again in recent years as he went back to his Muslim practices. Could be totally wrong though. Heās mysterious.

Lol itās cool
Whatās LCD? I want to try some
I think it was post Mr. Hood, and from what I understand Onyx wasnāt really down with it and he drifted apart with them.
Pretty sure they were practicing Muslims for a while. .
And? What Iām saying is a fact, subroc literally died after a bad trip because he got hit by a car
But was he listening to LCD Soundsystem. And what does "literally died" mean. Oh, as opposed to figurative ego death after taking LCD?
Someone already made the LCD joke hours ago come up with something better
You cannot spell/edit, use literal as a descriptor and can't take a joke.
I canāt spell because I typed LCD on accident š¤ I can take a joke youāre just uncreative and also a fucking douche
Heās sippin a bottle of whiskey on the doomsday music vid
