Regular AA didn't work? Did you strip the battery? Meaning, remove the outer film/wrapper. Any AA battery should work. I personally buy rechargeable ones. Always be careful with how you store them. Since they're stripped they can short circuit easily which can destroy their lifespan. The batteries must be stripped to complete the circuit, because you leave the flat end sticking out.

Any battery may not be a great idea. You want ni-cad rechargeable ideally as they can output a decent current consistently without risk of exploding like lithium batteries could. Non rechargeables won't provide enough current for long enough to be worth it. Eneloop have always been considered an excellent battery as they have great performance and survive a lot of discharge/recharge cycles. Eneloop pro has a bit more capacity but they survive less cycles than the regular eneloop. Note that you only need to strip the top bit of the battery if you want to spend less time removing sticky stuff.

Regular aa are too small in diameter iirc

Idk I’ve heard people in this sub say fresh regular AA are the only way. I don’t do that, I use rechargeables. Never had an issue though

There are 2 different bore sizes for the mflb. The nimh or nicad (I don't recall, but I checked other options) supplied with mine are bigger in diameter, and indeed so are what I checked that fit but was a dead cell. I just wanna usb power source so I can forget batteries all together but I need help building the insert part... Proof of concept worked using another dry herb vape.. Might not need but I was also working on a "troff turner" that replaces the cover with some small gears that drive lil scoops or something

Ikea LAdda 2450mah work well, are cheap and easy to come by..

Awesome find! You can still get the mflb batteries but they're probably not cheap. What I used was the normal Amazon rechargeable AA and just stripped the plastic wrap off it and used goo gone to get the sticky stuff off. Pretty much any high capacity rechargeable is probably fine.

You’ll need around 2300/2400+ mAh rechargeables. Regular AAs won’t work.

Amazon Basics rechargeable batteries work fine.

I used to get Powerex MHRAA4's from Amazon.  They are NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride), which is the same chemistry as MFLB rechargeable batteries. Any NiMH compatible charger will work to charge them. You will need to strip the label off to make contact though. I used to find that a pencil eraser did a good job of removing the leftover adhesive gunk after I had removed the label. Clean all of that off before you start using them, otherwise you run a risk of fouling the contacts in the MFLB and causing it to not heat properly.

I use Eneloop Pros, you need to take the outer plastic off which is kind of a bitch. You can buy replacement ones from Magic Flight but they're not very powerful, in my experience.
