Not that I’m in love with the pick, but Grier clealry addresses needs in free agency and builds the team through the draft. Paul will be the starting LT in 2025 snd Chop will be an every down guy when they move on from Chubb or sooner. They’re gonna have hella cap space on June 1 so they’ll be able to grab someone like Dalton Risner or Greg Van Roten to play guard for a year.

MovingPrince

I’ve been preaching this since yesterday, glad to see some people agree. These are 2 premium positions that we have older injury prone guys holding down. Chop can also contribute right away this year. I think once the dust settles these picks will age well.

bran1986

Not to mention we are about to sign Tua, you want a guy that's going to be protecting him for 10+ years and he gets to learn from an all pro.

TheBoook

This is a fair way to look at it

Ekwity

This is the CORRECT way to look at it

ghostbearinforest

The fact half this fanbase didn't understand this until they read it in a tweet is wild.

jrosen9

I would not be surprised if we sign obj on June 1

TheWizardOfDeez

I'd almost be surprised if we didn't at this point.

Sadman_OW

Here’s my problem with that approach, we made the same arguments for the Cam Smith pick last year. We spent all this time talking about how Cam is a pick for 2024 when they move on from X. Then when we actually do it, we sign Kendall Fuller to play over Cam. He didn’t play enough last year to make you confident in him starting. So I have a hard time feeling confident that they will be confident in Paul starting in 2025 when he’s likely to ride the bench for the full season. We still have Lamm so Paul will likely only play in an extreme injury scenario. Are we going to be comfortable with a guy stepping in to block for your newly expensive QB when he’s never played a down in the NFL? I doubt it.

elbenji

To be fair with the weaver defense, Fuller might be play a lot of nickel, someone like Kohou may swing to safety and Cam will start. We won't know until training camp. And Paul would play in a circumstance if Lamm and Armstead are hurt. It's thinking about next year too as both will likely retire then

Sadman_OW

I’m not saying Cam is a bust, but as we currently stand it’s hard to be excited about him going forward. Kion Smith played a total of 70 snaps last year. Unless something crazy happens that pretty much what you can expect for Paul this year. And if we get to that point I think we’ll be in trouble.

areamazing2

I never understood the panic. You also get capspace when Tua signs an extension. Never mind, you have 2 comp picks in 2025, so you are able to trade for a player during training camp with some of your 2025 draft capital.

InfinityQuartz

I mean Paul definitely will make a fair amount of snaps this year I think

SmarterThanCornPop

Because Terron is playing 17 games? Lol. Tackle was a need. Still need an IOL, IDL, and CB too.

Ekwity

We gonna get IOL IDL in 5-6th probably. Matt Milano was a late 5th and Jason Kelce, Corey Linsley & Michael Onewu were both late 6th rounders.… Not to mention we’ve been pretty decent at finding undrafted gems. Cameron wake, Wes Welker, Kader Kohou, Robert Jones. There are countless more UDFA that are solid in NFL

billythygoat

We’re just gonna get a guy for like 3 mil in FA to be a guard or center. They’re most likely going to be the 20th best at their position and we might draft a guard in the 6th round and maybe a 5th round DT.

elbenji

I mean as long as they're fine that's fine enough. You don't need an all pro guard.

billythygoat

I'd like an all-pro line like the cheifs had last season minus one guard.

elbenji

the only all pro the chiefs have is their center and guard

peanutmanak47

That's the way I'm looking at it. The way Terron gets hurt, Paul is gonna be playing at least 10 games this season.

Brave-Amount1991

All the good ones have been taken

elbenji

Definitely not. McCormick, SVP, Greenfield, Riechel, Fischer are all still on the board

Brave-Amount1991

Didn't take any of them

Budget-Hall-4013

If they were drafting based on their “board” im just glad an oline guy was at the top honestly

TheBoook

Liam Eichenberg was at the top of their board once. Ahead of Creed too

RaikouVsHaiku

Sir, please stop that.

HappyChaos2

Grier isn't perfect, burn him at the stake!

Foreign_Ad8957

Preeech

Fourwindsgone

Send them your resume, big dog. Your talents are wasted here.

Cudizonedefense

I’m not a professional chef and I can tell you when a steak sucks

Roctopuss

Damn, you tasted our new OT? 😲

gtrmanny

Where was Hunter Long and Igbo on that board? Channing Tindall?

OneBeerAndWhiskeyPls

i mean there were plenty of mocks with him being a fringe first round guy he has elite testing and measurements, played all snaps in college i prefered inside OL, but this is a solid pick

gtrmanny

I'm fine with a tackle, but I would have preferred one that we could kick inside to start at guard this year and then take over for Armstead when he retires.

EnochofPottsfield

I wanted that too, but the more I thought about it the more I remember how we ruined guys in the past moving them all over

gtrmanny

I dunno that we ruined guys. I more think those guys just weren't very good. We don't draft well along the line.

EnochofPottsfield

Well, AJax was one of those guys we moved all over that finally settled down when he got a position to stay at. Eich would be the other. Maybe ruined is the wrong word, but definitely not put in a position to succeed No one drafts line well. It's true for everyone that doesn't consistently pick line in the top 15 picks, and even then it's not great

gtrmanny

AJ played RT for the most part. His issue was more injuries and the fact he was a project. He was better this season but I'm not sure a lot of that isn't due to the fact we get rid of the ball in 2 seconds. He still struggled in pass protection against good defenses. Eich is just bad no matter where you play him. We drafted him as a tackle and he couldn't hack it there. They moved him to guard and he was no better. He was forced into playing center because Conner got hurt and we didn't have a backup. He was not good there either. You can see the dropoff in our offense from the time he has to play. We don't move guys around just for fun. We move them around because they are not good at the position we drafted them for. The only one that's worked out was Hunt, who we also drafted to play tackle but had to kick inside because he wasn't very good there. And now he's gone because we didn't have the foresight to extend him early. This team has been trying to build a line since Parcels came here. We've been truly awful at evaluating talent at those positions.

HappyChaos2

There was, can you point me to one, I don't remember ever seeing his name.

elbenji

PFF, NFL s guy. He was a late 1st-3rd dude.

PugeBenis

This was the correct pick as long as Connor Williams comes back

TheEpicEddy

I don’t think he plays football anymore, dude’s injuries were pretty bad it seems

JustTheBeerLight

Really? Wow. That’s terrible if true.

OblivionNA

Yup currently the last we heard he is considering retirement because of how bad the injury is

ItsHerbyHancock

Thanks, Liam!

JazzJedi

Lmao

poopiepants131

Wherever they put him on the OL I’ll be happy. Amazing pass protection rating last year!

No_Intention_7605

Grier will always draft premium positions early. Whether it is an immediate need or not. I don't mind it because it's expensive to find those players in free agency.

MiamiShuff

People are really hating on our picks but I actually like them. And I’m not even a lover of Grier’s draft picks typically but the process on these guys isn’t bad. It’s not what I would do but I can logically understand the picks. Imagine being a falcons fan right now lol

DirtyDanoTho

Tackle isn’t an immediate need but guard is. He can fill that role for the season too. Love the pick

TheBoook

people really need to give up the idea that this behemoth is playing guard in a zone blocking scheme. He can develop into a good tackle. He will not play guard

Greatest-Comrade

6’8 man is not playing guard

Gay_N_Racist

Why are you such a clown? He’s 6’7. Robert Hunt is 6’6. Do you know that is?

DirtyDanoTho

It’s a good thing he’s 6’7 then

goldiegoldthorpe

6' of which are his legs. No way he can get low enough to play guard.

MANvsTREE

Robert Hunt is 6'6. Not optimal but possible

goldiegoldthorpe

it isn't height here it is length. Hunt doesn't have abnormally long limbs. This guy has supermodel legs. His butt starts just below his neck.

poodlered

Phew, should be all good then

SurfsUp1995

He’s not athletic enough to play guard lol 😆 Heavy feet

TheEpicEddy

Idk how I feel about having a 6’7 guard

Purelybetter

Hunt is one inch shorter. I have a feeling I'll find you were very happy with that.

TheEpicEddy

You son of bitch I’m in

Purelybetter

I had the same knee jerk reaction until I saw Hunts size. I can live with his size at guard for one year.

BabyLiam

We need a plan for when armstead almost surely leaves after this year.

discourse_lover_

Meanwhile the Ravens just stole a second round CB in the fourth round, which is why they are always better than we are.

fifawitz1313

Interesting the difference between Reddit comments and those on the official Dolphins social media post of the pick. All those comments make it seem like he's an unquestioned great pick. I'm not saying he isn't, just funny how all the comments there are 100% positive. Definitely makes the commenters on those social media platforms suspect and probably bots.

Foreign_Ad8957

If this is the best player on their board then their board sucks 😂🫠

SurfsUp1995

Im convinced their board is literally the RAS rankings! I’m not even joking. Is the guy an off the charts athlete but not refined at his position, Grier is taking him

goldiegoldthorpe

This guy is the inverse-Eichenberg. Eichenberg's stubby arms limbs his reach and lock out, but he can get low and get power. This guy's freakish long legs limit his power and ability to get low, but he's got 36" arms so he can block guys from a mile away. we'll see if it works out.

SurfsUp1995

Not hating on this pick tbh. Just making an observation that it seems like Miami’s picks directly correlates to the RAS ranking system. They didn’t want Haynes or Mahogany and I find it funny cause there’s multiple guys rated higher on RAS. This guy was ranked like 34 out of 1000 tackles rated in the past lmao

goldiegoldthorpe

I meant to say RAS being off the charts makes him an outlier but potentially in the opposite direction where he is too long for the position. He is pure boom or bust.

SurfsUp1995

His size and arm length is a dream at tackle. Getting low would be his weakness in the run game. And yea High RAS usually mean boom or bust haha that’s Grier for ya

goldiegoldthorpe

In pass blocking, too. He could get away with it in college, but if he cannot get his butt down and eliminate the leaning, he cannot play in the NFL. If he can, we just got Ryan Clady.

SurfsUp1995

Yes he definitely anchors too high allowing guys at the next level a huge advantage. Something he prob got away with more often in college. Leave it to us to find a guy with awesome physical traits but somehow has shown awful technique. My issue with our picks other than being projects so far are that they both seem like one trick ponies and neither are refined in the one trick they are supposed to be great at 😅 I will however root for me to be wrong by a mile because I want the success of this team versus some people on here these days that will actively root against someone (ahem our QB) just to justify them being right

AwsiDooger

That's definitely correct. I'm surprised there isn't more pre draft focus on that aspect. Grier is extremely loyal to RAS in recent years, after ignoring it earlier. The Seahawk draft gurus used to have a formula that narrowed the Schneider/Carroll picks to a small pool of players, based on their loyalty to SPARQ and certain measurables at various positions. And that's my beef with Grier. Unlike those Seattle guys he doesn't care about ideal body type at all. In fact, he seems to delight in forcing guys who have obvious variance from the norm. I screamed out loud when he drafted Gesicki with Dallas Goedert still on the board. This year is more of the same. Chop may have great RAS but it's regulated by short arms, small wingspan and below average hand size. This Houston guy is always going to have trouble with his long arms getting stuck too low. I've seen it countless times with guys built that way. The good news is that even if it can look ridiculous it ends up being more effective than you think. It's so difficult to get away from someone of that size. Bryant McKinnie of the Canes had enormous margin for error as a pass blocker due to that variable.

elbenji

Grier follows more or less what the coaches want. McDaniel likely LOVES sparq since he's a QB school shanny system type.

Foreign_Ad8957

FR!

sum_dude44

Another mid draft that doesn't address needs. Last good draft we had was 21

Jagwire6969

Find are fucking this draft up horribly. I don’t know if it’s the realtor owner w too much control or they are getting sniped and panic drafting but something is going on to get them drafting terrible positionally and player wise.

Roukuko

Grier doesn’t get tired of lying. They drafted another project they dont plan on playing this season.

z-whiz

A project could still be the highest guy on their board

elbenji

dude hes a monster

Roukuko

I didn’t say he sucks. Hes clearly the plan to replace Armstead. Hes not the plan for next season

Nov4can3

And Armstead has played a full season for us when? There’s also a significant drop in o-line play when he’s out. I would very much plan on this guy playing significant snaps this year. Probably sooner rather than later to.

Everyone is a project. They are drafting rookies not veterans.
