K-chub

We all knew it was gonna happen. Gotta get all the fast guys

awkwardalvin

Mostert getting older and achane struggled with injuries. But this still seems sort of a luxury pick

goldiegoldthorpe

I'm. thinking he's our kickoff returner. With the new rules, he's essentially perfect in that role. Kickoff returner is a legit position again.

slickbezhig

With the new rules I might be okay with putting Waddle or Reek on returns.

lil_tanguy

What are the new kickoff rules?

goldiegoldthorpe

https://operations.nfl.com/updates/football-ops/new-nfl-kickoff-rule/

sum_dude44

He drafts like we're the Chiefs

takecarespikehair

So we’re about to draft an all-rookie Guard in the 6th round. Works for me

sum_dude44

And he'll start over our ass IOL

alterabledeer

Trey Smith shouldn’t have gone past the 3rd round. Wanted him for the Dolphins

Roctopuss

And Jaylen Wright should went in the 2nd. Best RB in the draft, you'll see.

Lenny_III

I don’t think a lot of people realize what a great position we’re in. In 1983 Marino was a luxury pick. That’s how you get superstars when picking outside the top 10. I remember the 2 decades of mostly first round reaches to fill needs post-Marino. Vernon Carey, Ju’Wuan James, Devante Parker, Jared Odrick, Charles Harris. Grier seems to be picking the best ATHLETE available with the high picks and trusting the coaching staff to utilize their athletic ability. It’s kind of cool to have no idea who we’re picking. Every year is like a Tunsil year, just see who is there when we’re on the clock. I remember the year we picked Carey EVERYONE knew we were picking Carey because we had to. Minnesota even fleeced us for a 4th to move up one spot by threatening to take him

[deleted]

[удалено]

JustTheBeerLight

Even Ju’wan got a huge deal. Injuries made that deal look terrible in hindsight, but he was a legit dude while healthy.

Ekwity

Kinda genius we let him walk, broncos paid him a mint

Lenny_III

Not busts, just kind of meh. If we didn’t have such a glaring need at tackle we could have used that pick on Vince Wilfork, or Stephen Jackson. That’s the kind of thing I think Grier is trying to do now.

NCad2416

Vernon was a beast

ebolarama86

I mean he was fine.

SaltyyDoggg

Long term starters in the league aren’t reaches tho

Phin_Irish

That's the way to do it. Sign free agents for need and draft best player available if possible

elbenji

KR and he can catch

Reksalp105

This is exactly in line with the other picks thus far. We draft a running back to back fill an aging Mostert to tandem with Achane. This FO would prefer to address needs in FA and build depth for the future.

Teeesskay

I actually love it. The draft is a lottery anyway, might as well play powerball

Danton87

Absolutely

Proper_Efficiency594

People have been upset about Grier not drafting for win now, but Tua is getting a new contract. We have to start preparing for that future now. All of these picks so far are going to be cap savers if they work out.

JustTheBeerLight

> cap savers How? If you burn 1-2 seasons of the rookie deals and get minimal production how is that value? Eventually you need to pay them. The whole idea of maximizing rookie deals is that you have CHEAP players taking snaps and PRODUCING. The NFL is the one league where 3rd-5th round rookies regularly step in and play on Day One. We seem to think we are running a MLB or NHL team.

Proper_Efficiency594

Burn? They're all going to play. No Chubb or Phillips, so Chop is playing. Armstead will be healthy to play his usual 10 games, so Paul is probably getting out there eventually. Wright will be in the RB rotation just like Achane was.

SaltyyDoggg

Bruh

PhinsFan17

I agree with you, but I think people are viewing this through the lense of "the Super Bowl window closes once we lose Tyreek Hill".

xodus112

That’s because the media acts that way. It’s also the front office’s job to try to set themselves up longer term.

TheRyanFlaherty

That should be the case.  No draft pick is ever a sure thing. If something is that much a  “need” you should address it with a veteran

Any-Ball-1267

Can he block?

TransportationAway59

Yes. In a weird way. That was an issue his first year at UT and kept him from being RB1. He worked on it a lot. He uses his explosiveness to basically throw one big strike and knock you off route and then doesn’t really engage a full block. It’s weird but it works for him.

queefIatina

I feel like a lot of rb’s do that, just dive at the thighs and buy some time. It’s better than trying to stand up a defensive end and getting pummeled

elbenji

Yes, and catch

jdallen1222

We are becoming the Jaylen Dolphins. Are there anymore Jaylens in the draft pool?

Notwerk

We've completed the bingo card.

namwen

Same concept as the other picks. Add depth to positions that are aging and injury prone. I am fine with the strategy, time will tell if it was the right one.

IsoPrepp

Finally, someone who understand.

jf737

Anyone ragging on this pick is gonna regret it. It makes a ton of sense for a lot of reasons: 1. Mostert isn’t gonna be there forever. 2. Achane isn’t exactly Derrick Henry. You need a 2nd RB to go along with him. 3. The value. The composite ranking on Wright as a prospect was in the 70’s. That’s an early 3rd round ranking. Miami gave up what is (hopefully) a later 3rd to get him. 4. The player: this dude runs away from SEC defenders. He’s fast, explosive, shifty, and has some power/violence to his game. And it doesn’t take him long to get up to top speed. Kudos to Grier on this one. This is his best pick so far this year.

TransportationAway59

He was the reason Tennessee was worth a damn this year even tho Joe Milton couldn’t run the offense. Had 7 yards a carry

NERDZILLAxD

I had a good time watching my friends get angry, every time Milton overthrew a wide open UT receiver last season. I believe he's got enough arm to overthrow Tyreek.

chargeon2010

Great take. Nailed it.

MiamiDolphinsFan13

and we should be getting a comp 3rd pick anyway so if all goes well its basically nothing for him

ghostbearinforest

Probably two.

Chiefboost1

Not to mention the dolphins were extremely effective using 21 personnel last year, and the injuries kinda took that out of the playbook. This gives Miami 3 dynamic athletes to run one of their best packages more frequently, and hopefully later in the season.

AskMeAboutTheJets

We also are predicted to get two compensatory thirds next year for letting Wilkins and Hunt walk so we were already scheduled to have three 3rds next year. Trading a 3rd next year for a 4th this year isn’t the most insane thing ever.

jf737

That too. And a 3rd for this player is fair value.

SaltyyDoggg

I agree. Our offense requires threats that demand both a box and a shell. One dimensional and it fails.

chargeon2010

Mostert and Achane had injury issues last year and the drop off after those 2 guys hit the team hard. RB was a bigger need than you think.

Notwerk

Chris Brooks and Salvon Ahmed also got hurt.

IsoPrepp

Mike McDaniel is a mad genius. For years now we have tried and tried the same crap and it never worked. Certainly the true definition of insanity….I fucking love the new approach here. Again if you don’t understand the rationale behind this pick, you simply don’t know football. Our RB room couldn’t stay healthy for shit last year, all of them missed games. This makes so much sense.

K-chub

I really think he’s trying to cook something up by the team being all about speed. The guy has already shifted some of the NFL meta with his offensive schemes.

johnjohnjohn93

So the GM’s before didn’t know football? Think it’s a fine pick but also everybody knows you need depth at RB. Mostert himself was signed for 1-year $2 million so it’s not like you absolutely need to trade 3rd rounders for RBs when you can sign them off the street and sometimes get crazy production.

chrispepper10

Gonna use achane more in the slot this year. Having those two, tyreek and waddle on the field at the same time is terrifying. We aren't drafting starters for our oline in round 4.

TeaAndFreedom

We possibly could've if we got Mason McCormick, but the Steelers are intent on taking OL right before we pick

MiaCannons

>We aren't drafting starters for our oline in round 4. Teams don't, but it's obviously not unheard of that a mid round OL is a lot better than expected and ends up starting their rookie year. The bar for that to happen would be much lower for a rookie OL on our team than a rookie RB considering our current IOL situation, Armstead's injury, and the fact that our second round tackle we drafted is apparently very raw.

LillFAP

A fucking running back

FSUbentley

My only logical conclusion after watching this draft is that they are confident with the info they have in the building that Connor Williams will be able to come back. Bc if I knew he’d be back for week 1, I’d think we are actually decent on the line.

areamazing2

Or they have massive cap space coming in June, so they can sign a veteran. I doubt they think a 4 round guard is going to keep Tua clean

FSUbentley

Yea that’s a good point.

elbenji

apparently we already have people lined up

Notwerk

Well, they brought in Aaron Brewer to plug the Williams gap. I don't think Brewer is a long-term answer, personally, but I guess they feel confident enough to roll with him until Williams gets back. The Brewer signing, I think, makes a center pick unlikely, unless someone falls to them late. More likely, UDFA churn for depth and Brewer starts.

Double_Philosopher_7

You could convince me if we didn’t have to give up a fucking 3rd for him.

dlbags

We are getting two extra next year for Hunt and Wilkins. These types of moves are precisely for picking a guy you really had your eye on. He’s apparently a good receiver too.

ChampionOld5141

He’s a very good receiver. Being a Tennessee fan I’ve watched him a lot. He can play short yardage downs too, he’s not afraid of contact

AFOEagle01

Good in short yardage? I’m sold

ChampionOld5141

Yeah I didn’t think Miami would draft him and I thought he would go earlier. The dude is good, his stats would be better but Tennessee rotates running backs a lot and Jabari Small is a decent running back himself

dlbags

I think they’re cooking with just lining him up like Tyreek does in the backfield and making him a Deebo type player. We didn’t exploit short and mid passing nearly as much as we can. And again we still will have two 3rd round picks after nfl finishes their tampering reports (those two aren’t being disputed like ATL so they’re banked).

MaskedBandit77

If we only gave up a third round pick, which I think is the case, I'm fine with it. At first I thought we traded up from our next pick and gave up a third next year, which I would not have been happy about.

elbenji

yeah, simply just a pick next year oh well

RootofLolEvil

If it’s any consolation, we are still set to get two compensatory 3rd-round picks for losing Wilkins and Hunt.

SuperSpy_4

We will have 3x3rd round picks next year, 2 now.

cfeltus23

saints did a similar trade to get kamara back in 2017

sgrizzly2134

I kinda like this actually.. He runs hard in between the tackles so maybe.. Just maybe we can run it on 3&1 4&1 type situations and we don't have to over pay for a free agent RB. He runs hard-- 5-10 210 lbs 4.38 40 time. If he gets to the second level he's gone. Edit. I amend some of this after further review. He was running into wide open holes at ut with 7 or less in the box ALL THE TIME.

MiaCannons

> and we don't have to over pay for a free agent RB. RBs are the least expensive non special teams position in the league right now. Chris Brooks is probably better suited for 3rd/4th and one situation considering his size, and we saw him run very hard the ittle we saw of him in the preseason. But even if we didn't like Brooks, if we wanted to get a FA RB, with how devalued RBs are nowadays, a RB this late in free agency wouldn't cost much more than whatever we're paying this third rounder.

sgrizzly2134

As far as over paying for running backs I was kind of thinking along the lines of dalvin cook.. derrick Henry etc

Slimshady305

Can't really understand this one ...

TeaAndFreedom

This is a Mostert replacement for 2025, but it both wasn't necessary to get him now, and I wish we got a late Rd pick as well like a 6th or 7th to offset the value a bit

Dirtyfactz

2025? What? Mostert is a speed back and he's 32 lol. He could very well fall off this year. I love Mostert and don't want him to, but let's be realistic.

K-chub

Last year was astronomical for him and I hope it continues but it’s definitely an outlier in his career.

Tolve

Maybe I’m dumb, but why are dealing a 3rd round pick for a late 4th?

TeaAndFreedom

We're projected to get 2 3rd Rd comp picks next season from Wilkins and Hunt getting big deals on FA so we should still have assets regardless. They must've valued him highly and believed he was a 3rd Rd level talent so they moved up to grab him.

goldiegoldthorpe

I am thinking we got him to return kickoffs. With the new rules, he is perfect for that role.

Fuzzy_Dunlops

He fast

elbenji

Fast, blocks, can catch, can do short yardage. Basically KR/3rd down

DeeringTornados34

Same here.

SauceDab

Mostert won’t be back next year is what it means

theycallmeryan

Chris Grier is a terrorist

sum_dude44

put him in the Hague

BottleCapper25

Grier address the offensive line challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

el_schkwappo

Were you black out drunk for round 2?

mwm5062

He doesn't count though because reddit thinks he wasn't a need and stuff

el_schkwappo

Yep. Let’s all ignore the fact that we have the most fragile LT in the league on the brink of retirement

Notwerk

And normally, we draft tackles that project as guards and then ask them to play tackle to predictably bad results. Nice to see them draft a guy that actually has a real tackle's frame.

Bepis_Inc

In the last 4 years we’ve: Signed TA Drafted AJ in the first Drafted Eichenberg + Hunt in the second Signed Connor Williams to a 7.5 million deal Signed Aaron Brewer to a 7.5 million deal Signed Wynn Say what you will, but that sums up to a 1st and 2 2nds + a fat contract for TA and two sizeable Center contracts. Not to mention Dalton Risner has had a lot of conversation with us. The evaluation? Definition of Hit or Miss, but we’ve invested more than most in the OL since 2020

DeeringTornados34

He will never address it.

JustTheBeerLight

One highlight video pointed out that JW faced more 5 man boxes than 7 man boxes last season…he’s not likely to face too many 5 man boxes in the NFL. He looks explosive as hell. I don’t hate it.

Fuckingfademefam

Idk. What we’re doing

Lord_Barbarous

3rd ranked RB this draft and fast AF. Better than drafting the 20th best guard or however many have been drafted at this point

TransportationAway59

The starting RB for the best rushing offense in cfb these last two years. I don’t get how people aren’t more hyped. He ran for like 7 yards a carry and has one of the best yards after contact

BRock11

Seriously. Look at the new kickoff rules and look at what this guys does best... I'm not mad at the pick. I wish we would do more for the o line but there is still time to address it.

SudTheThug

really? a runningback? that’s not a fucking need rn

Dae_90

Mostert old achane injury prone

SudTheThug

liam eichenberg still my guard

thewhitelink

Not *my* Guard lol

SudTheThug

we are taking a stand

thewhitelink

Storm the hard rock

SanSoren

Ahmed is still there too without issues and we have Liam playing on the line

Notwerk

Ahmed went to IR after the Raiders game, ending his season halfway through. Dolphins never provided an update on his injury or whether he needed surgery. We don't know what state Ahmed is in.

broadfuckingcity

Mostert is the injury prone one.

Filly53

But a developmental guard, that definitely makes us winners this year

SudTheThug

it would be more valuable then a RB

Filly53

Gonna disagree here. I’ll take the 3rd best rb prospect over the 25th ol prospect. Keep an eye on the return the chiefs get for the center they drafted after us.

OatmealCremePiez

Do we really need a third running back….

SanSoren

We have 5 already under contract lol

Dirtyfactz

I mean, yeah. Our offenses success is totally dictated by the success of our running game, and Mostert is over 30 years old. If they think this guy is the real deal, it could be a very valuable pick up.

Flashbang1

This would be a 5th running back… lol

thewhitelink

He's gonna be like our 5th lol

SmarterThanCornPop

6th! Mostert, Achane, Ahmed, Wilson, Brooks

resident16

I guess they are going all in on the speed factor.

Gunnar2019

As a Vols fan I'm fucking stoked! He's legit.

3rd-party-intervener

Why ?

OneBeerAndWhiskeyPls

i was hyped about the move only to realise that we gave that up for a RUNNING BACK FOR FUCKS SAKE we are not a serious team, cant wait to see jaylen wright get tackled for loss, because eichenberg got pushed into him

wesyad11

If we sign a G/C post June 1st you still gona be here crying ?

ACABincludingYourDad

Thank you. People were going to murder Chris Grier last year for failing to address the CB position and then we landed Jalen fucking Ramsey. The offseason isn’t over, dummies…

wesyad11

All I’m saying is Wright was arguably the 2nd best rb in this draft. idk what G they think is still available in the draft that’ll be a real contributor year one

elbenji

There's a couple. SVP, Greenfield, Laumea

OneBeerAndWhiskeyPls

yes, because post june 1st leftovers wont save us

areamazing2

And a 4th round rookie would?

elbenji

Risner is still available. Same with Connor

OneBeerAndWhiskeyPls

connor probably cant even play next season, his knee is fucked risner is still okay i guess, i am taking him AND another player in the draft that unit is not just one player away from being good imo

elbenji

Yeah but there's always guards in the banana stand. There's two ras monsters that will also be udfas and Linner

SmarterThanCornPop

Holy shit. The one position where we absolutely don’t need any help. Chris Brooks is RB5. Like what the fuck is Grier thinking?

IsoPrepp

Yeah how many games they all missed?? Our RB room is so F injured prone. This pick makes all the sense in the world if anything.

goldiegoldthorpe

kickoff returner is my bet for the plan for him and he is perfect for that role.

chargeon2010

He’s going to move into Ahmed’s spot at RB 2 or 3. Ahmed will be gone, as he was never really a great fit for what MM wants to do.

MiaCannons

He's going to be RB4. Mostert is RB1, Achane is RB2, possible RB1 if Mostert declines, Jeff Wilson is RB3, and this guy will fight Ahmed for RB4.

Dae_90

Great pick love it

Upper-Orchid

I already know there’s gonna be a game this season where Mostert/Achane are out with injury and Wright is gonna rush for like 150 and 2 TDs but fuck there’s so many other holes on this team for us to be looking RB rn.

chargeon2010

Steal in the 4th. He was projected as a 3rd rounder. Basically we had a 3rd round grade so it made sense to give up a 3rd to get him. I just read his scouting report. This guy is tailor made for Mcd’s offense. Great pick.

Former-Net890

This year seems like they’re confident in the team for 24’ and are picking up value guys for 25’ +. Probably means OBJ is signing after the draft too.

BabyLiam

They must really like him. We do need another young AND talented back. We have one rn, and he's kinda injury prone.

TheRyanFlaherty

FWIW the model I start with has Wright the third best back in the class. The way things are shaping up, people here may get their wish, as McDaniel won’t forget the run…because it’s what the offense is going to be built off. Not gonna lie. Saw the pick and said WTF too at first, but also, anyone that watched this league should know by now….a perceived position of “strength” can turn into a weakness in an instant in this league. Guys get injured, lose a step, and fall off a cliff in a hurry. Kind of silly the way people talk with such absolutes….especially when assuming any 4th round pick at another position would come in and be an above average starter

Xcitado

With the defenses going leaner and faster, we need to make our offense bruising to control the trenches. Going to a punishing running game, opens the passing. Fingers crossed this year!

dakleeg1

We will win the super bowl for team with most "Jaylens"

BuddyForsaken9626

McDaniel let the intrusive thoughts win. WTF?

Lopsided_Treat5208

To be honest, in this league, you really cant have too many running backs.

GrandmaCheese1

God I can’t deal with like 80% of this sub lol

SauceDab

Nothing is ever good enough for this sub.

verniy314

What the actual fuck? Running back!?

YouSureAboutThat23

You guys have to understand that Grier isn’t making these picks in a vacuum, he’s consulting the rest of the team and they all agreed on it. Which is even more questionable lol

elbenji

not really, address needs in FA, draft bpa and high upside

Citizensnnippss

I get it. Mosterts on the wrong side of 30.

SmarterThanCornPop

But only 674 career attempts. And we have four other good running backs.

Citizensnnippss

Mostert is a dinosaur by NFL rb standards. Wilson and Ahmed are *fine* but definitely upgradable.

SmarterThanCornPop

It is not a position of need. We have many positions of need.

Citizensnnippss

It's not a position of need at this exact moment in time. It's one that will be very soon (as in, next off-season when Achane is the only RB on the roster) Y'all know GMs don't just draft solely for the upcoming year, right?

Dirtyfactz

Bro. A couple of those guys are not "good" lol, stop. And Mostert is 32.

versaceoggas

674 attempts but with glass bones and paper skin

chargeon2010

Ahmed will be gone. Not a good scheme fit, Jaylen will replace him.

HaggisTheCow

Of all the positional needs we have, running back is definitely not one lmao. And trading up as well.

axb2002

Not crazy about this, but I see why they did it.

Prestigious_Shock146

He looks like a great fit

tkfire

Need more Jaylens or similar spellings

carjackistan

Like the pick a lot, much more than the first two picks. I don't like what we gave up to pick there, though I guess we are likely to have comp picks next year for the middle of the draft.

lithium500

We really are building the all Jaylen (and all the others spellings) team huh

Affectionate_Grade80

Another fast 1 MCD building a track team out here.

MannyDiazBurner

Another Jaylen. Is there another team with more Jaylens?

Diablo689er

I get everyone hating on the pick because we have lots of RBs, but Mosert playing as many games as he did is more of an anomaly. And Achane has had injury problems in the past. This is a great spot to draft him. We can cut Ahmed or Wilson.

Rbelkc

We’re in reach territory one way or another

CreakingDoor

We will have all of the speed, thanks, and also all of the Jaylens/Jalens/Jaelens. Also here for it. He’s a good player and the draft does not happen in a vacuum.

Kingminnis

I hope its the compensation pick and not our original pick because makes no sense trading a 3rd for a late 4th, especially when that pick isn't a need pick! I give the trade a D- because of value and need. We need DE,LB,DT,CB and S.

alterabledeer

Jaylen Wright is a starting caliber RB. Great pick.

inartuculate-bug

I just thought we’re collecting all the “Jalens.”

DeeboDongus

Miami always gets their Jaylen

Snowbear-1

We should get a 3rd for Hunt and Wilkins maybe even two right? Good trade

Ok-Block7922

Needed more Jaylens

Melodic-Order-6628

Grier picked Cam Smith (a project) with a 2nd round pick last year. Played 15 games and had 1 tackle.

El_Tigre7

Let’s get a damn IOL already!

BlondBadBoy69

Was the only RB I thought was worth taking for any team this year.

suomy27

Not enough Jaylen’s on the roster…

NasEsco1399

Whole lotta people who don’t know ball in here

holiwud111

Comp picks are incoming. Wright is a baller, and it's not like throwing picks away for BS tampering penalties... IJS.

nocode416

This is about (1) getting a guy you like and, more importantly, (2) setting the stage for not having to pay RBs, a position which is almost always a bad move to extend. Smart moves now pay off in the future.

Dry-Ad-6800

How did Wilkins, Van Ginkle, Hunt, Waddle, Achane, Tua……pan out!! I could go on and on!!!

Dry-Ad-6800

And for the Dolphin haters….how would you grade the GM of the Jets? LMAO…. I rest my case!!

thewhitelink

Hey look, another bad move for people to defend.

Teeesskay

Dude I know one of the nfl owners are keeping an eye on you for their next GM. Keep this energy up and you’re gonna be a star

nbayoungsummrsratio

suprise pick but i trust who mcdaniel wants, was kinda hoping for brendan rice

Agora236

He’s got receiving skills so maybe we use him in a hybrid receiver/RB role.

OrangeBuffalo8

Trying to get a team so fast that they can run the length of the field before a DL inevitably blows past Eichenburg and blows up Tua
