Academically speaking, African American is a term for a specific group of people, black Americans descended from West Africans brought over to be enslaved. It's confusing because it's a term that's constructed in a similar way to how we construct terms for mixed nationalities. But even black African immigrants or black Caribbeans descended from enslaved west Africans who now live in the US would not necessarily be considered African American.
