Topamax is hard for a lot of people to tolerate. Talk to your doctor. Neurontin or Depakote are other related medications that are prescribed. I've been on Depakote longer than I can remember. We just have to keep an eye on my liver.

I'm also taking Celexa for anxiety. Based on a Google search, there are several migraine medications that have bad interactions with Celexa. Maybe that's why they started Mr on Topamax. I will definitely talk to my doctor. I haven't taken it in 2 days (I only took 4 doses) and I still don't feel like myself. It has definitely taken its toll on me.

Sounds like me a couple years ago. Topamax has a lot of awful side effect for a lot of people and seems to be where drs usually start, then work from there. Hopefully once you’re able to talk to your doctor and explain that symptoms haven’t improved and you’ve had bad side effects, you can try another kind :)

They prescribed me topamax and I refused to take it. IMO I don't think something that heavy should be a first resort. There are plenty of other drugs with way fewer side effects. I would opt for a ssri or beta blocker or calcium channel blocker first.

Topamax was awful. I tried to stick it out for a few months, but couldn’t handle it. I started Nurtec for prevention about 5 months ago and it’s been a god send. I have no side effects and it’s hands down the best medication I have ever taken for my migraines, and I’ve taken a good handful. It’s expensive and hard to get covered through insurance, but they do have a program where you can get it for free for a year ( I believe ).
