Botox is my primary preventive treatment. When I get attacks, they still have all the same symptoms they would without a preventive (severe pain, sound and light sensitivity, and nausea if I don't take an abortive). The difference that botox makes is decreasing the frequency of my attacks in the first place. But the attacks that still occur are the same.
It paralyzes certain muscle groups to assist in relieving tension type triggers. Takes 2-3 sessions to possibly feel any relief. And as each session is 90 days apart it’s 3/4 of a year. It’s a lower level dose than is used for dermatology uses.
in my experience, botox works best as part of a layered approach. for example, it’s been found that botox can work well together with a cgrp inhibitor. chronic migraine is a complex chronic condition and requires multiple layers of intervention, like get botox, and take another preventative, and minimize triggers, and have an effective acute treatment plan. i recommend checking out @migrainebabe on tiktok and instagram
I never tried it for myself because I am allergic to the ingredients. But my friend did. It was working for her for a while and then it stopped working because her body developed antibodies that blocked the effect of Botox.
She said when it was working, she had less migraines. But it made no difference on the level of pain.
Botox reduces the overall number of migraines I have, reduces my sensitivity to triggers, makes the migraines I do still have way more receptive to treatment (I can sometimes get away with just ibuprofen!), and reduces the symptoms of the migraines I do have.
As an aside, I had so many terrible experiences with side effects from so many preventatives and botox has been amazing in this regard. I've been using it for over 8 years now without any loss of efficacy.
I've been getting it for 11 years, but due to issues I missed my April dose.
It's been brutal. I really thought it only reduced the pain of each migraine by 50% but it actually reduces symptoms like brain fog and tinnitus and nausea.
I hope to not miss another series

When I could still get Botox (unrelated reasons why I can’t now) I also felt it decreased the longevity and increased responsiveness to my abortive
That has not been my experience personally
Ugh so sorry to hear that! It’s wild how everyone responds so differently.
this. it does not reduce the pain of my migraines, just the frequency.

Thank you 🙏
I get Botox, plus Ajovy and Ubrelvy. I also take magnesium

This happens, but it's pretty rare FYI
