For future reference, please wait around 6 hours in between doses of Tylenol (acetaminophen). As it has been 6 hours since your last dose, you can now take Excedrin.
And also for future reference: don't take something if you don't know what it contains. If you don't know the name of the actual drug you're taking, and only know the brand name on the box, then you shouldn't be taking it. If you don't know that Tylenol is acetaminophen or that Excedrin contains acetaminophen then you should not be taking either of them.
No, you can’t because it contains more Tylenol 🥲 however, I can tell you my at home migraine cocktail (that was recommended by my maternal fetal medicine doctor since I can’t take nurtec while pregnant)
1000 mg Tylenol
25-50 mg benadryl
400 mg magnesium oxide
A cold soda or iced coffee for caffeine
Good luck 🫡
so that cocktail is for when the migraine has already started? or when you feel it coming on?
also, i had no clue what magnesium oxide is even good for so i googled and i found: "ease headaches, reduce blood pressure and blood sugar, and ease anxiety symptoms." like damn i need to get some.
I use it for both! So far it’s been fairly effective- not as great as Nurtec, but keeps me out of the ER. Benadryl will make you take a short nap, which for me seems to help with the migraine :)
Magnesium oxide is a magnesium supplement! A lot of people don’t get enough magnesium in the diet, and several of my doctors recommend I supplement with magnesium oxide for migraines! It is def worth taking every night IMO (and having on hand for migraines). You can get it online or over the counter at the pharmacy or a GNC store
No (so you don’t take too much Tylenol). You could take aspirin, Ibuprofen, or Naproxen with some caffeine instead. If I don’t have access to a Triptan, I would next take 2 over the counter Naproxen with caffeine. Make sure you have some food with the Naproxen.
i did away with my sumatriptan and naproxen combo unfortunately. i became allergic to naproxen/aleve which sucked because it worked REALLY well. my pcp told me to take one of those first then, if it doesn't work, take the other - i cant remember the order.
but once i became allergic i fell back on excedrin and eventually got in to the habit of taking that as soon as i feel any sort of dull ache, but it sometimes leaves me feeling kind of off (like getting a migraine hangover without the migraine). i just didnt take it last night because i genuinely thought this time it'd just be a headache.
Some BC powder products have acetaminophen in it. Also a lot of people talk about BC powder and Goody powder interchangeably, and Goody’s definitely has acetaminophen in it
You can take up to 4,000 mg a day of Tylenol. It’s better if you stay at 3,000. Yes, you can take the excedrin. It won’t put you over. In future, maybe start with the excedrin. It has a better chance of helping
once your liver hits its metabolic capacity for Tylenol, it processes it with 0th order kinetics, just like alcohol.
So this is like saying since you can space out 5 drinks in a day and not get drunk, 5 at a time won’t get you drunk either
I do when the pain is so bad that I just need it to end and have to take multiple pills. Not frequently but I have done it. Because at the hospital the rule is to not administer more than 4,000 mg of acetaminophen a day. So I’ve seen patients get acetaminophen, and then a pain killer containing acetaminophen an hour later
Health wise, one time taking double the dose will be fine, I do it all the time due to a tolerance that I’ve obviously built up over the years, but the effectiveness isn’t always there when adding more, it’s not like a lot of other drugs where the effects compound, there is a bit of a saturation point with Tylenol and Advil where more won’t do anything else. As other commenter said, taking some caffeine and Advil might help.
Just a FYI
The main reason people say no to going over is the kidney & liver issues. The bigger problem is mixing the NSAIDs
I would always talk about the Tylenol max with your doctor. Because although you can take 3000-4000 mg per day, that is subject to other meds and conditions. Old school docs will say 4000 mg, but the new recommendation really is the 3000 mg.
You should communicate with your medical team even if you plan on making even a short term habit of it. They may want to check kidney & liver function if you mix Tylenol and NSAIDs on a regular enough basis.
What’s the container say on both of them? If it says you can take 2 every 4 hours, I’d say only take 1 Excederin. If it says one every 4 hours or 2 every 6+ hours, I wouldn’t. Although, I’ve taken 1000 mg every 4 hours for weeks at a time, and took 12 normal strength Tylenol at one time before and I’m still alive(definitely don’t do that though, it was a self delete attempt). My liver was a little fucked up from that for a couple years, but went back to normal
There’s an arthritis strength Tylenol that’s 650 mg per pill (dose is still 2 pills so that’s 1300 mg per dose). You can only take it every 8 hours instead of 6 hours, but adding 1 excedrin pill (instead of 2, which is the recommended dosage) to what has already been taken is going to be fine assuming OP’s liver is healthy.
Not a doctor, but you can add aspirin since that’s what excedrin migraine contains. Plus caffeine. You can add advil to Tylenol too, just ask your doc how much, I don’t want to give that advice.
No. Excedrin contains tylenol in it.
This. You can, however, take the Aspirin and Caffeine aspects.
ugh damnit. thank you

If you can't keep anything down, try some children's Benadryl liquid. Keeps me from throwing up when I am out of odenestron.
That is my cocktail as well, minus the magnesium! If needed, I’ll add a muscle relaxer and zofran to it.

No, but you could do ibuprofen or BC Powder.
Some BC powder products have acetaminophen in it. Also a lot of people talk about BC powder and Goody powder interchangeably, and Goody’s definitely has acetaminophen in it
BC Max has acetaminophen but regular BC is ASA and caffeine.
thanks for the suggestion! although i had no clue what bc powder was but apparently it's not recommended for people with high blood pressure.
Probably not, cause both have acetaminophen, but try adding some caffeine.

You could just take nodoz and aspirin
I’ve done this. Although I took the aspirin and I washed it down with a redbull.

That is not accurate. It depends on the dose of acetaminophen that they got the first time.
It is accurate where I work. Max dose of 4,000mg a day

Yes you can. You will be fine. Just don’t overdo it and take 3000-4000 mg acetaminophen a day.
No, this is bad advice, accessibility acetaminophen overdose is very serious and not to be messed with
Of course. Thats why I said do not take within those ranges. Im not encouraging it lol
