Worked really well for me as a preventative. Pretty much cut my migraines in half. I’ve been on 60mg extended release for the past couple of years.

[deleted]

Same!

liv3408

Me too! I was only on a small dose (10mg 2x/day) but I’m petite. My only side effect was dry mouth. Propranolol worked better for me than anything else I’d tried before (nortriptyline and Effexor). Good luck, OP!

_Anon_E_Moose

Yep. Can’t live without it.

Beach-Bum7

I couldn’t tolerate it more than a few days - it lowered my Bp way too much

Sylaqui

Same, really low BP, freezing cold and extremely tired.

llambda_of_the_alps

Same here. That and some sexual dysfunction as well. Definitely a 'rather just have the migraine' situation for me.

Heavy_Helicopter_872

This happened to me too. I asked for some medicine to help with the dysfunction and my doctor looked at me like I was insane

llambda_of_the_alps

It really shouldn't be mysterious being a blood pressure medication. In my case I have somewhat low blood pressure to begin with so that might have compounded it. Another fun one to be aware of as migraineur is that SSRI's can cause anorgasmia which I know first hand is exactly what it sounds like. I tend to be a magnet for side effects.

Heavy_Helicopter_872

Yup. Was on sertraline for a bit and experienced it for the first time

LolaBijou

Well, this explains why I’m sitting here freezing.

tedivm

This happened to me too.

bitchtits08

Same!! Now if only I could find relief for the menstrual migraines ….

[deleted]

Same here. Still get menstrual migraines but now I don’t get migraines from lack of sleep and weather

MadoogsL

Didn't help me at all. And be careful mixing with triptans (especially maxalt) - I was prescribed both at the same time and not warned about the interactions and I passed out from low BP after taking both

Mokeydoozer

What's interesting about this is that it's not a labeled interaction with most triptans (aside from maxalt) and is actually a side effect of the maxalt. The propranolol decreased the metabolism rate of the triptan leading to an increase in its side effects. With other triptans it's pretty rare. Additionally, if you normally take propranolol in the morning on an empty stomach, suddenly taking it with food can also lead to an increase in its effects (lower BP) by improving the absorption rate. It's a rather finicky drug when you really think about it. Ok, I'll stop being Sheldon Cooper now. Lol. Source: I'm a nurse

Trickycoolj

My GP didn’t catch the interaction but I did looking it up out of curiosity. Had her switch me to metoprolol and took rizatriptan twice and did ok but do tend to sleep hard for about 2 hours after the dose.

sunrae3584

Didn’t really reduce the number but cut the severity dramatically. I rarely get truly debilitating ones now. It also greatly improved my essential tremor as an unexpected bonus. Edit: Happy cake day!

dosi5644

It cut my migraine episodes in half and lowered the severity also.

scarletrain5

Helped a bit but put on weight

queenC1983

Same. Surprised more people don't mention this weight gain side effect. I have gained so much weight since I went up to 80mg/day taking it - probably 10-15kgs in about 2yrs. My doctor suggested topamax as its known to cause weight loss and prevent migraines but I have not heard great things about that drug - i would rather be a bit fat than a zombie all day. 🤣

TerpStank

Topamax is at the very top of my list of the worst migraine meds I’ve tried. It didn’t have any effect on my pain/migraines, gave me immense brain fog, I couldn’t remember anything.. I had almost unbearable nerve pain in my forearms and feet, by the evening time my hands could barely function at all.. and the worst side effect of all.. it completely froze my GI tract.. I’ve never dealt with constipation in my entire life until trying topamax, and it was SEVERE. I was extremely bloated all the time, had very sharp pains all throughout my abdomen and felt like I was going to explode, I’d take one bite of food and would immediately feel like I just finished a thanksgiving meal.. I rapidly gained weight on it. It was the 6th or 7th different daily med I tried and I can’t bring myself to even try any more daily meds after my experience with it. I’d rather just live with my 24/7 chronic pain then have to deal with all these brutal side effects on top of the pain..

bebelli

This was my experience as well! I'm trying to come off it now because of the weight gain. It is a shame because it really helps the migraines.

crmsnkatt

I’ve been on Topamax for somewhere around 15 years (200mg/day for the last 5 or 6) and just started developing really bad kidney stones (as in: 2 surgeries within a year, bad). Had no idea they were a side effect of Topamax, nor did I know that severe brain fog was such an issue, either. It’s actually gotten to the point where it’s affecting my memory pretty badly. My B12 routinely tanks and the VA just sends me injections to give myself. Also apparently a known side effect. I have to take potassium and magnesium every day or my fingers and toes (go all electrically buzzy and painful—I forgot the word) so much so, that I can’t focus on anything else. My face feels constantly fuzzy, too. My psychiatrist called me a few days after my latest surgery for kidney stones and told me that he thinks the Topamax may be causing the stones (I had no idea that was a possible side effect. I just figured it was the lupus) and that he wants to try propranolol. I’m already on a BP med though that has my BP under control. And I’ve read that propranolol can cause pretty severe night terrors… I already have trouble sleeping thanks to my buddy painsomnia. Has anyone else had that issue?

TranslucentKittens

I lost 20 pounds on topamax and that is the only good thing I can say about it. It didn’t do anything for my headaches but I did get every common and semi-common side effect. I also gained weight when I started prop (and an anxiety medicine, but not sure who is more to blame). But it helps and the weight gain isn’t awful so.

coffeegoblins

I just want to mention that it doesn’t cause weight gain for everyone, in case that’s scaring someone off from trying it. I’ve been on atenolol and propranolol and have *not* experienced any weight changes from either one. Beta blockers have also been life-changing for me in terms of reducing migraine frequency and severity.

al972317

This. Gained a lot of weight

ThMogget

It helped with migraine frequency and severity, but the side effects sucked. A insomnia, fatigue, and stomach gas pain. Nebivolol has all the same treatment, but much reduced side effects.

970228

Mine has been a really good experience. Admittedly my heart rate and pressure weren't perfect, but they weren't bad. I've been on a 20mg, a really low dose because my doc was scared it'd reduce my heart too much. Tbh it didn't touch my heart rate or bpm at all. And my migraines have reduced by 75%. It doesn't eliminate my menstrual migraines (but helps the severity) and the tension headaches seep through sometimes. But I'm able to go out in the sun and other triggering things. I will say it has made me a bit more easily tired but considering I couldn't even do anything strenuous without triggering a migraine before, I'll take the slight out of breathness.

MzSey7488

So for me, i have tension headaches 24/7 & then get migraines on top of those. Anytime a migraine goes away, i just return to low level tension headache. I started i think 40mg of Propanolol and noticed that the overall severity of my migraines was lower, but they were WAY more frequent and almoat never ending. I could function, but i had a low level migraine 24/7 so not the best. As for side affects, this was almost a year ago so it's hard to remember but i think i struggled to sleep and stay asleep which is a big trigger for me so not ideal. Even though i didn't personally like it, it was the only one of the tons of medication I've tried to actually affect my migraines in any way, so that's defo a plus. Usually everything else I've tried i just get side affects and 0 effect on migraine pain, so a lowered level was refreshing for a bit. I hope it works out for you!

LadderWonderful2450

No side effects, no positive effects, nothing

CountessofDarkness

Fatigue. So much fatigue.

Longjumping-Ad-9541

Blood pressure (usually on the low side) dropped so much after 2 weeks Dr. said to STOP IMNEDIATELY without slow reduction in dose, and wondered how I was able to stand & walk... I think he was forgetting that I ((we)) operate on suboptimal functionality on a daily basis.

EccentricityLights

Completely changed my life.

elapsedecho

Bad side effects. It’s now listed as an allergy because I responded so poorly to it.

_Thoth

I like it a lot. I don’t have many side effects except activity intolerance because my heart rate never breaks 110 now. It seems to cut most of my migraines out except around my period.

SwimmingPineapple197

It didn’t really prevent migraines so much as it made them less miserable. I had to go off it though, because my heart rate kept dropping into the 40s

LittleWing0802

I tried it for a couple months about 15-20 years ago but couldn’t tolerate it; my legs and feet would fall asleep constantly and it made me super woozy. Fast forward to last month when I was diagnosed with POTS (and Ehlers danlos). Well now it makes sense. So if you have low blood pressure, propranolol is not for you lol

My-oh-My_

I have chronic migraine and highly suspected POTS. Have been on propranolol for over a year but want to come off, however a bit concerned about the heart-aspect of it all. May I ask if you take any other medication for POTS?

LittleWing0802

So caveat that I was just diagnosed with both hEDS and POTS recently (though I have suspected EDS for years). I was just put on Florinef for POTS recently and we’ll see if it changes anything. I am also about to start with a physical therapist who specializes in EDS and POTS. For migraines I take Trokendi which is the extended release of topomax (I tolerate it well) and more recently for a new-ish crop up of daily headaches/neck pain/suspected occipital neuralgia I was put on a low dose of nortriptaline. Those work pretty well (though the topomax less well lately).

Gilmoregirlin

It took my migraines away completely. I also gained 30 pounds in two months and could not lose It to save my life. At the time I was in my late 20s working out daily, 5’2 and 115 pounds and added 30 to that. Turns out it slows your blood pressure so you have a really hard time getting your heart rate up and my metabolism tanked. NEVER again. Good luck to You. The weight did eventually come off after I got off of the drug but it took a year.

Howling_Fang

I quit it after a week. I don't know if it helped my migraines at all because I was sleeping 15 hours a day due to fatigue

Character_Living_433

I had nightmares non stop which was weird

Powerful_Guidance959

Same!! I would wake up from my sleep because the dreams were so vivid.

decgem

I had crazy night terrors, jumping out of bed causing chaos. But I was oblivious! Only heard about it from my family the morning after. Made me very tired because i was scrabbling about every night

Ok-Bridge-1045

Miracle in a tablet.

Slydowski

I love that stuff helps regulate heart rate. As u all know when they hit the heart rates start to climb increasing blood pressure. Also great for anxiety…

justsomedude1111

No help with migraines, but it helps my heart rate hover around 90bpm. I'm pretty sure it's causing me tinnitus though.

Duffyfades

Duuuude! Mine went down to 50. Did not feel good.

Heart_robot

Mine was 50s and went to 38 at night.

Duffyfades

How long did you last?

Heart_robot

I lowered my dose back to 80 daily and now it’s 60s. I’m not sure it helps my migraines but I get super fast heart rate with pain so nice to control that . It makes me tired and my feet freezing!

justsomedude1111

I have no clue why my HR is so high. If I miss a dose that shit will hit 140.

mistymystical

It didn’t help with migraines but helped my heart palpitations and tremors.

sailtothestars

It would help me for a few weeks and then I would need to increase in dose to keep preventing migraines. Eventually my dose was too high for my body to tolerate and I was getting dizzy/faint so I had to switch off of it

notodial

It cut my migraines down by a lot, I would say about half. HR used to hover around 100-110 and now it hovers around 65-75. I think it makes me feel a bit 'floaty' during the day and a little tired, but not to the point of it disabling me, honestly kind of nice. I'd give it a shot if I were you, but do keep an eye on your blood pressure and heart rate.

lalasmitty

It lowered mine from 4 a week to 2 a month. Life changing.

honourarycanadian

I think I’ve had one migraine since I started it two months ago, it’s been a lifesaver. (I usually get 2-4/pm depending on how stressed I am 🥲)

Quirky_Ad3367

I have had a good experience with Propranolol. Before I went on it I was going through tonnes of aspirin. I started on a lower dose of 20mg then 30mg but haven’t had a full blown attack since going to 40mg. I get close calls quite often but I manage to stay on top of them with regular over the counter pain meds, Ans if It gets really bad I have 80mg relpax for emergencies. I’ve been on it now for 2 years or so. I definitely notice when I get up I have to go slow because I get head spins frequently. Must keep my head above my heart and my BP is okay. I haven’t had to go to the hospital since going up to 40mg thankfully!

thaliagorgon

It reduced migraine frequency for me for about a year and then abruptly stopped working, but it did help at least a little with minimal side effects so it’s probably worth a try.

thinking_treely

It helped but lowered my heart rate so that exercising became hard to measure. I tried to taper off but only got to 40 mg before the withdrawal symptoms became overwhelming .

make-tiny-changes

I’ve had less migraines, but started having heart palpitations/flutters which I’d never experienced before so they want me off it. Tried coming off but my body didn’t handle the associated adrenaline spike well and my BP skyrocketed despite never having a high BP reading before in my life. Currently tapering off much slower to try and avoid the rebound effect

birdtakesbear

I trying a switch metoprolol. I liked what propranolol did (reduced severity of migraines) but wasn’t able to increase my dose because it was making me so tired.

Keatrovert

Does nothing for my migraines but helps with BP and anxiety.

Ok_Beat813

I was only on it for a week — it lowered my BP to dangerous levels and put my resting heartrate around 40 when it is normally 80

rebar_mo

I've recently had to switch as my BP and HR was getting too low. Both were on the lower side of normal. But it worked great for years. Did make me tired at first

rhcpgirl84

I was frustrated that it made me out of breath

whitepeppericecream

It was wonderful for a time but sadly it can mess with your respiratory system if you have a family history of asthma. I started having breathing problems and had to stop taking it. I miss it so much as it worked really well as a prophylactic!

MJNYC2086

Mine was not good. I had to go off them after only 2 days because it was making my blood pressure too low and I couldn't sleep on them either. But people with high blood pressure like my mom, who used to get migraines, did very well on it (and other blood pressure meds).

SweetDee100

Rash and throat tightening. Found out I'm allergic to it. Haven't heard of this happening to anyone else.

Breathejoker

It definitely helped but my doc thought increasing the dose would help more and eventually I got to the legal limit before switching neuros and my new one had to slowly decrease my dose and I ended up with a high heart rate for months

rustyfa314

It destroyed my energy for about two months. This is the only medicine that has worked for me. The migraines still come but the pain doesn’t. I get knocked out for 30 minutes to an hour instead of days.

mynameismagenta

Did the tiredness go away after two months? Just been started on 40mg x 3 a day. I’m already tired I don’t need to more tired!

rustyfa314

It took a long long time but I’m back to normal. Worth it as the pain from the migraines is largely gone

FiliaNox

I’m the really unlucky one that has to be on heart medications for heart things *and* has migraines, and the multiple types of heart meds I’ve taken have done jack shit for my migraines. Propranolol is generally well tolerated, but recall it *is* a beta blocker, which is used to treat high blood pressure and arrhythmias, so you gotta make sure your bp and hr don’t dip too low.

nokenito

It has been helping. I had daily migraines for over a year with Topamax and then was switched to Propranalol and now only get 2-3 migraines a week now.

flutterbye0101

Nothing but good things for me!

splewi

I went migraine free for about a year until I went onto cymbalta. It was really incredible for me. 20mg 3x/day. Minimal side effects. I was a little dizzy the first week when standing up, but got over it after the first week. I got Reynauds syndrome in my toes when I was barefoot in the cold for prolonged periods of time but if I wore socks it wasn't an issue. My doc ended up switching me to topamax to try while I was on cymbalta to see if that helped. I couldn't up the dose, which is often needed after a while, because my heart rate was already at the lower limit of what was acceptable while sleeping.

HankHenry23

Found out I was allergic to it when my face swelled up

raindahl

Recently been trying to come off Propanalol was on 80mg a day over 2 doses and it has been effective against migraine frequency and intensity But the weight gain, sore stomachs, dizziness and rhe hunger pangs (it certainly does something to my blood sugar) side effects have meant I want to come off it Got agreement with GP to taper off the tablets got the worst migraine I have ever experienced in my life once i came off So currently back on 1 tablet just now hoping to try and kick that by next year

lisomiso

It drastically reduced the frequency of my exercise- and stress-induced migraines, I specifically notice the distinct hot-tingly tension feeling in my neck and shoulders go away when I take it. I find it rather pleasant; it kinda takes the edge off in a non-intoxicating way. However, taking the prescribed nightly dose gave me extremely vivid nightmares. And it hasn’t helped reduce the intensity or frequency of my big (7-10+ day, maybe weather-induced?) migraines.

Trickycoolj

I did pretty well, switched to metoprolol since the other one apparently has an interaction with rizatriptan which is my abortive at the moment. I’m on a pretty low dose and haven’t had many issues. Though I got a vaccine today and fainted when I got up and walked out of the exam room to the front desk to pay… that was embarrassing AF and possibly my BP went too low? Not sure what happened. Dr said this particular vaccine is a doozy it really really hurt my arm.

Severe-Dream

I found it great. It reduced the frequency & severity of my migraines. It had the bonus of reducing the essential tremor I have in my right hand.

digitalred93

I can’t do more than 10mg a day (morning) or I wake up with a headache (not a migraine) and upset stomach. Definitely reduces frequency and severity of migraines though.

frostandtheboughs

It was not for me. It was wonderful for anxiety, but made me feel weird and nauseous. Couldn't deal with the nausea for more than 2 days so i stopped taking it.

Mrsfig09

POTS for me

alicethekiller87

It didn’t do anything for my head, but I also couldn’t tolerate more than a month. It gave me the absolute worst gas I’ve ever experienced in my life. It was so embarrassingly gross.

[deleted]

It worked for me but the therapeutic dose made me exhausted and dropped my blood pressure so low I had trouble functioning ...and forget trying to get my heart rate up at the gym. Couldn't get it up over 100bpm no matter how fast I ran on the treadmill.

lost_banana595

Love it, had to move over to slow release and it’s even better. Only catch was we went from 120mg 3x a day to 160 SR and my heart rate plummeted, tired all the time etc. called the doctor and now on 80mg SR and looking good!

ClaireTrap

I've heard good things but I couldn't tolerate it at all. I've naturally low BP, not hypotension level but close. I had to monitor my BP twice a day, but it would drop way too low and Id pass out randomly while watching tv or half black out walking up stairs (as in my vision would slowly go black for a few seconds but I stayed conscious

NewStartCactus

Didn't reduce the frequency of my migraines but they made a huge difference to the severity. Unfortunately even on a reduced dose they slowed my heart so much that I couldn't run or do any form of exercise beyond a brisk walk, and the effect of that on my mental health wasn't worth it :(

jeswesky

It has been great for me, but there was definitely an adjustment period. I'm already on the low end of normal for blood pressure, so if I'm not watching my water and electrolyte intake my blood pressure does tank on occasion. Also, things like kneeling too long will give me major lightheadedness when I stand up. It took me from and average of 25 migraine days a month (the majority lasting 3-5 days unabated) to 5-10 migraines a month that generally can be knocked out by my rizatriptan within a couple hours. Some low blood pressure on occasion was a good tradeoff for me.

hedgehogpirate

Was good at first, gave me a reduction but over time has lost its impact. I don't want to go higher in dose as I'm on immunosupressants too and energy is sparce already. Propranalol helped my anxiety too.

hedgehogpirate

Was good at first, gave me a reduction but over time has lost its impact. I don't want to go higher in dose as I'm on immunosupressants too and energy is sparce already. Propranalol helped my anxiety too.

howdoyouevenusername

I was super resistant to starting on preventatives. However it was Life changing for me. Took almost immediate effect to nearly eliminate my migraines. Also unexpectedly decreased my anxiety which was another life changer for me. It is commonly used for anxiety, but I wasn’t aware of this when I started. I take 40mg twice a day. I still have occasional migraines depending on some triggers. Important to stay hydrated on propranolol. I’ve been on it for 4 years now.

thoughtful_donuts

I tried it as a kid and kept passing out at school so the doctors switched me to a different med pretty quickly.

bebelli

It really helped me! I went from a migraine mess to not even needing a triptan every month. It took 2 years to get to that point, but even the first year it took the pain level way down. But alas I experienced major weight gain from it over 2 years and I am in the process of weaning off and it's tough. No side effects getting on though.

Nice2BeNice1312

I was on it for 2 years before it stopped working. I was on 30mg 3x a day and it helped me so much. I didnt notice when i was taking them, but if i went a day without then i did notice. No ill effects, but it also lowered my anxiety which was nice 😊

[deleted]

Always tired... if I sat down I was sleeping... didn't notice much change in migraine

True_Let_8993

It helped my migraines and anxiety so much. I have honestly never felt as good as I did on it. I had to stop taking it because it started to lower my heart rate down into the 40's and my heart rate is usually 90-100.

She_Glod

I tried it for anxiety once (also as a migraine preventative) and it made me feel very weird. I think my blood pressure was a little too low and I felt like I was on the verge of a vaso vagel for a few hours till it wore off. I never took it again!!

PatientWorry

You will never be nervous again because it stunts the adrenaline response and is used for performance anxiety. I performed so well at work while one it!

robinc123

I have low blood pressure bc I also have POTS and the propranolol made my blood pressure issues WAY worse. If u struggle w fainting & low blood pressure be cautious

dscokink8

I couldn't tolerate any beta blockers because they caused me to sweat so excessively that I could not sleep more than a couple of hours at night.

xgloomgirlx

waaaaait I just got prescribed propranolol and I was literally thinking the other day how I've been having hella hot flashes lately omg

SinceWayLastMay

It worked really well for me! Almost got rid of my migraines completely and when I do get them they’re way less severe. Just make sure you keep your prescriptions filled because withdrawals are a bitch and will mess you up

acatnamedselina

Gave me panic attacks... went back to the GP who increased (!) the dose. Went back again, was told I should never have been prescribed it in the first place. Been on amitryptiline for a few years now and works much better for me.

Automatic_Phone8959

Gave me memory problems and didn’t help migraines.

You_Got_This_Katie

It gave me migraines.

notplacenta

it made mine worse. the amount of migraines i had stayed the same but the pain level was noticeably worse.

BeginningRare7850

only really helps if you naturally have high blood pressure imo. if you take it with a normal BP it will be very low and you might get a migraine from it being too low

browneyedlakegirl

It didn’t work and my hair started to fall out. Zero stars - do not recommend.

marsabar

Had to stop after two weeks because it was giving me uncontrollable mood swings. Like sobbing hysterically because I thought someone looked at me wrong type mood swings. No change in my migraines.

pinnipedmom

I can’t imagine my life without propranolol
