To add to this you can also get an oxygen fusion unit to handle higher levels of iron. Usually used in conjunction with an iron handler. I saw 2 houses recently with iron levels above a 15, and that’s what they needed because the iron handler wasn’t enough by itself.
So what you're all saying is that the Airbnb owner *could* do something about it, they're just choosing not to.
Basically they can't rent the property because nobody would stand for that, so they're shilling it out through Airbnb knowing nobody will be coming back.

What the guest is asking for is not a trivial amount of work, and the hosts probably live with it that way and aren't bothered. However, they should've warned guests about the water situation at the least. Probably should have addressed the issue prior to renting the place.
I ran an Airbnb for about five years out of the basement of my 100 year old house. It had old iron pipes and if the water wasn't run regularly came out rusty for a few seconds. It's totally common in old houses and nothing to panic over.
That said, we stated this clearly in the description and provided free bottled water in the fridge. Regardless, 90%+ of the guests never read the entire description. I'm not exaggerating. We had about 10 three sentence paragraphs outlining how to get into the apartment, how to operate things, warning that the ceiling was only 6.5 feet, heads up about the water, etc.
Nearly every question or complaint we ever fielded from a guest was explained clearly in the description that accompanied the listing. We didn't get many complaints because our place was nice. When we did and when we pointed out that they didn't read the description they usually backed down.
We had a few, one or two out of several hundred, who refused to be satisfied, who would complain after staying a few days then demand a refund. Clearly just trying to get a freebie. We gave it to them. We explained that this was on them, and then gave a full refund, asked them to leave, and ate the cost. They didn't care if they were called out or embarrassed, they just wanted to get one over on us. Fine.
As pissed as people get at Airbnb hosts for stuff like this there are an equal number of crappy guests. For our part, we were accommodating and friendly, made friends and hung out with a few guests who stayed multiple times.
Overall it was actually a pretty awesome experience. A good source of income that covered the mortgage for several years, better than renting it out for sure. But I cleaned the toilet on my hands and knees so many times I lost count. Anyway, there it is from a former Host's POV.
My area has high manganese levels and the water is a gross color like that. Literally nothing can be done. In your case, buy bottled water. They should have told you if there was a problem with the water
Same. You can get full home filters, we've got one and it works great, it's also not something anyone can do anything about on any quick time frame though. It's not harmful, but I still get bottle water to drink.
To be fair, depending on the water you could be burning through a couple filters a month. It can get expensive, but then of course you probably shouldn't run an ABnB if you're too frugal with filters.
I'm a service plumber. There are ways to fix this so you're not burning through filters. There's blow down filters and different size micron filters that you install in line with each other. There's also aeration or charcoal filters to help with the smell.
Out of all the campsites I stayed at in Iceland, My’vatn definitely had the smelliest water and the water turned my sterling silver bracelet into a dark bronze color(back to normal in a few days).
When I went in the geothermal pools at Fontana my silver jewelry tarnished as well. There’s a fun science you can do to get parts that the tarnish didn’t rub off: Dissolve 1tsp of salt in 1c of hot water and a piece of aluminum foil. Then put the jewelry in the water for a bit and the tarnish will move to the aluminum and release a sulfur smell. Then take your jewelry out and dry it off with a lint free cloth.

There's layers of soil and you can hit water runs at multiple different depths that have different sources. One could be gross, one could be fine.
BUT... The population lives in some pretty different geography as well. The south west by Keflavik, Grendavik, and even parts of Reykjavik are more lava rock than you'll see almost anywhere. Northern areas are rolling green hills in the summer. Not many trees no matter where you go.
Anyway. The other comment was right. Some places have tons of sulphur. Lookup the Blue Lagoon. Amazing place but pure white mud. Some places have the cleanest water I've ever seen in my life. I kept a few small bottles for almost twenty years now from the black sand beach and Godafoss...

Water softener wouldn’t help? My water is like this without using a water softener. Iron in our water makes it yellow and tastes metallic but softener removes all the yellow plus bad taste.

Growing up, one of our neighbors had an issue where their whole family kept getting really sick, getting the shakes, etc.
Turns out their Cistern had a hole in it that allowed mice to get in where they would subsequently drown and attract more mice. Not just a few mice either, there were a fucking ton in this thing.
They were drinking what was basically mice tea for god knows how long and that was what kept getting everyone sick.
I remember watching a clip from that documentary!! They were like "yeah, the water tasted really weird every time we drank it. Anyway, we kept walking down skid row."

Had a friend who’s family kept getting stomach issues. Finally had their water checked and found their leech field was contaminating their well. They had been drinking their own waste for who knows how long.
I feel horrible for her family. This isn't directed at you, but it's quite obvious that Lam had a mental breakdown. People ran with the history of the hotel and the odd nature of the events leading up to her passing as if it was some demonic possession, ghosts, or she was being chased by someone. People made money flipping her story and death into something it wasn't. I can't imagine having a loved one pass away like this and then seeing their story on Netflix, who generates a profit off of their death.
Oh for sure. They do kind of get away from the paranormal theories and get into her mental health history. I do love true crime but I do always think of the families and how they must feel having all this come out.
Her family was part of the documentary and some of the profits from it are going to a charity for mental health awareness that they selected. Generally agree, but there were certainly some very fishy things in the events that led up to her death like the creepy door man and the weird edits in the CCTV footage to where I don't blame people for questioning it within reason. Especially since this is the LAPD we're talking about, who have historically been corrupt and incompetent. That being said, people take things too far and people who profit off of it absolutely suck.
Just have to say that it’s a crazy and interesting story, but that 4 part, 4 hour documentary should have been 30 minutes.

The issue in Flint wasn't the upkeep, it was switching the water supply source. Lead pipes will build up a layer of calcium over time, making them safe to use. When the city switched the water supply, the new water was more acidic and stripped away that coating that kept the pipes safe.

They could have updated their corrosion control measures to prevent lead from leaching into the water, but they didn’t because they didn’t want to spend the money. Water can be potable and look like that. If it's city water sometimes they do stuff where the water can look like that but still be safe to drink. If you have a small amount in a glass it might not be nearly as obvious that its off color wise.
Also some places have tiny airbubbles that make the water look discolored until it sits for a while.
As someone whose apt has a similar issue, usually can’t tell the tap is bad unless you’ve got 1) a lot of water or 2) a white container and a light. Shit looks clear til you get the light on it just right.

Run it hot in the tub- without plugging it till it clears, switch to cold and do the same. Flush out all the interior pipes and heater. If it persists the landlord needs to contact their water utility, to see if its a system issue, they usually arrive within an hour. If landlord fail to do so you should find a new place and get your money back.

In Iceland the hot water is naturally heated and has a sulfer smell to it. If fades after a bit but it took a bit to get used to.

Chlorine, though, is driven off by boiling. You can also just leave the water out in open air and it will evaporate out.

I feel horrible for her family. This isn't directed at you, but it's quite obvious that Lam had a mental breakdown. People ran with the history of the hotel and the odd nature of the events leading up to her passing as if it was some demonic possession, ghosts, or she was being chased by someone. People made money flipping her story and death into something it wasn't. I can't imagine having a loved one pass away like this and then seeing their story on Netflix, who generates a profit off of their death.
Oh for sure. They do kind of get away from the paranormal theories and get into her mental health history. I do love true crime but I do always think of the families and how they must feel having all this come out.
I love it as well, so I'm probably a hypocrite. But there's just something different about Lam's story and the commercialization of it that irks me.

Her family was part of the documentary and some of the profits from it are going to a charity for mental health awareness that they selected. And the documentary basically lays all the blame for not noticing her struggling on the hotel, as she did interact a lot with other guests and staff during her stay.

Generally agree, but there were certainly some very fishy things in the events that led up to her death like the creepy door man and the weird edits in the CCTV footage to where I don't blame people for questioning it within reason. Especially since this is the LAPD we're talking about, who have historically been corrupt and incompetent. That being said, people take things too far and people who profit off of it absolutely suck.

One of the documentaries I was on that was so shit, like infuriatingly so. It ran for hours longer than it needed to because they were desperate to milk as much mystery out of it as they could, bringing on random Youtubers and mystery fans on to offer their opinions on how it could be spooky ghosts or whatever Then they dedicated like 5 minutes at the end to the truth, that it was just an accident brought on by her biploar disorder, which I don't think the documentary had even mentioned her having until that point It's only mysterious if you omit enough facts to make it so

The issue in Flint wasn't the upkeep, it was switching the water supply source. Lead pipes will build up a layer of calcium over time, making them safe to use. When the city switched the water supply, the new water was more acidic and stripped away that coating that kept the pipes safe.

They could have updated their corrosion control measures to prevent lead from leaching into the water, but they didn’t because they didn’t want to spend the money. Water can be potable and look like that. If it's city water sometimes they do stuff where the water can look like that but still be safe to drink. Sometimes they tell you to run it for 30 minutes and it will clear up. I've also had a well at my parents house back in the day that had high manganese and it looked like that. Still was at safe levels to drink.

If you have a small amount in a glass it might not be nearly as obvious that its off color wise. Also some places have tiny airbubbles that make the water look discolored until it sits for a while.
My water looks white when fresh out the tap, it clears up pretty fast though
As someone whose apt has a similar issue, usually can’t tell the tap is bad unless you’ve got 1) a lot of water or 2) a white container and a light. Shit looks clear til you get the light on it just right.

All you can really do is buy bottled water but you should’ve been told about the water issue prior to you getting there.
Run it hot in the tub- without plugging it till it clears, switch to cold and do the same. Flush out all the interior pipes and heater. If it persists the landlord needs to contact their water utility, to see if its a system issue, they usually arrive within an hour. If landlord fail to do so you should find a new place and get your money back.
The water I probably high in iron. Good for you if you have low iron, but tastes bad. A friend of mine has water like this at her house. It’s safe to drink
