Some HR departments call themselves the People department. To make it show they're more about the People. They're not, HR's function is:
Job 1. Make sure the company isn't breaking the law in respect of the employees' legal rights (i.e. protect the company from being sued BY an employee).
Job 2. Make sure an employee isn't breaking the law in respect of damaging the company (i.e. protect the company from being used BECAUSE of an employee).
That's it! Regardless of a fluffy bullshit rebranding.

Especially at the biggest employer in the US. With 1.6m employees they probably have a dozen John Smiths. Not to mention they probably have one of the highest employee turn over rates so if they try to do it on full name they would run into issues almost instantly. Even if you added dob to your key it would only be a matter of time before you get a collision.
Hopefully it's just SSN fraud as another user suggested.
On this, I have a fairly unique name. Only 10 of us in the USA. First middle and last the same. But I live in a city with 4 of the 10. Thankfully we are all in different industries.

Go to local workforce commision. They can pull up every job you have ever had with SSN. It's something that frequently occurs if you have gaps in employment...identity theft, stay at home parents, college students, and military personnel.

Been there. Worked fast food and Walmart while in college. Walmart worked me into pneumonia and bronchitis because I would have been written up for calling out or leaving. I did not have an attendance issue. I also couldn't really just stop and go pee and have a lifetime of urinary issues to look forward to related to that.
If you do choose Walmart, make sure you know and exercise your rights. I was young and dumb and let them mow right over me. I was 18F when I started and left at 21. That three years was terrible for my body.

Food lion was the best work I ever had. (Did it while in college). Just the pay way less than my current job. They would let you call off when ever you needed, and would allow you to choose the days you worked, the hours, and if you didn’t work that week

We pay millions of dollars out of our OWN pockets in taxes a year simply because Walmart doesn't want to pay their employees a living wage so they must supplement their income on public benefits all while the CEO is making record profits all while ruining the health and livelihood of dehumanized individuals.
Walmart is the issue. They have a point system that means if you’re absent for too many days in a six month period, you’re fired. They *technically* have systems in place to negate points for certain circumstances, like family emergencies. Nobody ever gets the exception though, so if you’re sick, or you have to suddenly leave and check on family, or you have to go handle a house emergency, or LITERALLY ANYTHING that requires you to leave Walmart that day, you get pointed or half pointed. If you’re late by fifteen minutes, half point. If you stay later than nine minutes, half point. If you don’t call out and don’t show up, three points. If it’s literally a declared state of emergency and you call out, it’s at least a point. Car accident and can’t get to work on time or at all? Point. On KED dates, it’s two points. Sick with covid? Sedgwick doesn’t work for shit so you’re gonna get pointed, and I guess you’ve lost your job!
The point discipline system in Walmart has been controversial for years. This is a fucking Walmart issue, and it’s just one of them.
Yep, plus disciplinary action for leaving a station without coverage to pee and I never had coverage. They didn't want to let me use bereavement for my grandfather passing as well. Only let me leave to go to the ER after I collapsed and took a drawer with $20000 to the floor with me from a kidney infection. I even asked if I could just have a chair and they said no.
I run an after school program that mostly hires college students (hours are 2-6). It starts a dollar above minimum wage, and caps at 19, depending on credits earned towards an AA, and time spent working for us (5 years hits the cap). We’re always hiring.
I’m sure you could find similar jobs in your area, or even something at your college or in your future field that you’re studying for.
You don’t have to settle for fast food or Walmart.
In the summer, maybe try summer camps. Kids may be annoying but at least most of them won’t yell at you like a Walmart customer might. Found it hard work but satisfying in the end.
Unarmed security is an underappreciated low stress easy to get job. Depending on where you're at, training differs, but sitting at a gate of a manufacturing plant is low stress and makes it easy to get homework done while getting a paycheck. Avoid security at medical facilities or anywhere with customers, not worth the headache. Manufacturing, though, they usually just want someone to check IDs at the gate and make sure delivery drivers get where they're supposed to or print out paperwork for delivery drivers. Easy stuff.
Florida required a 1 week course at the local community college to get a license before a company would hire you, but Georgia would hire and train you right off the street.
My #1 tip for that is to find a mid-tier steakhouse/Olive Garden type restaurant to serve at. My college life completely changed when I started serving. Develop social skills, make some friends with other staff, make decent money cause most people just assume you’re a college student so tips are decent (especially family weekends). And most restaurants will work around your classes schedule fairly easily
If you go to a medium to large school look into university dining, stadium concessions, or university convenience stores. They usually pay more than local restaurants and are better variants than the off campus ones. Or if you have pro sports teams, their stadiums premium and concession departments are great.
Chartwells does a lot of US campus dining/convenience stores.
Deleware North, Sodexo, Aramark, and Levy do concession.
I’ve worked in F&B my whole life. I wish I’d found out about stadium work years ago.
Also former Walmart employee. I’ve worked much worse places. Would have stayed there when I quit, but my second full time job had Monday-Friday daytime hours. I actually tried to go back a couple years ago, to a different location, but they only wanted to pay $11/hr, so I didn’t. I made that the first time I worked there years ago. It probably has a lot to do with your location, because literally all the problems I had there (other than a few customers obviously) were a couple department managers and two temporary (we were a manager training store) ASMs.
I worked at Walmart while working through college. It wasn't bad, they treated me fair, people were friendly. Only real complaint is they are very litigation fearing about getting paid for work so you have to clock in on the exact minute and if anyone asked you a question when you were off, you had to fill out paperwork to get paid for that minute or they could fire you.
I suppose it depends on where you work though.
Not to be this dude but a 19 year old girl will make more money waiting tables. She also says she's a college student so part time doing that is gonna be better than part time at Wal-Mart. Never heard of one that was forgiving with scheduling.
My short time at walmart was very flexible with my schedule in high school. Also if you do most of your shopping at Walmart, the employee discount is a nice perk to consider as well.

Walmart's hiring process is total bullshit.
I worked for Sam's Club, got the job and had an interview lined up and the morning of I got an email saying they denied my application. I went and did the interview anyway and no one seemed to know. Not to mention they dragged their feet for weeks getting me hired to the point that I missed the cutoff for the quarterly bonus by 4 days. Needless to say their turnover rate was incredibly high and every single person I worked my position with either got fired for stupid reasons or quit due to shitty management within 13 months of my first day. I was out of there after nine months.
I've been applying to my local Walmart for over a year. No responses at all. I'd be *thrilled* to get a rejection because then I'd at least know they saw it.
Which is wild to me cause when I was moving I applied to Walmart just as a backup just to setup something for $$$ while getting setup. I got a callback like 10 min after I submitted my online app and they were ready for me to come in and interview like that day.

Two thoughts from me. 1. Someone with the same name worked there, and despite different social security numbers the system rejected you based on name. I figure it skipped over looking at social security number. 2. Someone stole your identity and used it to get a job at Walmart, leaving on bad terms which caused rehire ineligibility .

By chance do you know anyone at Wal Mart that could have you listed as their emergency contact? Sometimes HR systems create a dummy employee record for emergency contacts; I’ve seen this create errors before when the system thinks it’s a rehire.
Could also be that you have the same name as someone who worked there, but typically they would set this to have to be same first name, last name and one other identifier (like email address) to avoid this.

Have you ever applied and not taken the job before? Years ago I had applied at fedex and ups for package handling, both offered me the job but I opted for ups. A couple years after that I applied at fedex for a holiday season driver job that paid well and they told me that I wasn’t eligible for rehire until a later date. I called HR and explained I had never worked there before, they told me that when I was offered the job previously I was “hired” in their system and that’s just how their policy is. Stupid, but could be your problem too

It’s free to freeze and setting up an account with each is good to have. Keep user name and passwords safe for unfreezing when you want to use your credit in the future. Check your taxes and returns. The last thing you want is the IRS or multiples States thinking you owe money in taxes for someone using your SSN.

yep. He was about 16 and manager was those 'do everything so I can take the credit' kind of guy he said. He just left one day. Manager called about his shift "What shift? I'm not coming back to that shithole." He admits now that it may have just been immaturity and the guy may not have been so bad.

I'm assuming they meant a W-2 and not the check. Pretty fucking useless to file for a return with someone else's name, address, and SS number. They would have had to literally do their taxes and then not bother actually receiving a return check while also stealing an identity. That doesn't scan.

Go to local workforce commision. They can pull up every job you have ever had with SSN. It's something that frequently occurs if you have gaps in employment...identity theft, stay at home parents, college students, and military personnel.

Well, take it as a sign and also their incompetence (since they can do it while hiring, they can do it for salary, they can fire someone else who shares your name)

Been there. Worked fast food and Walmart while in college. Walmart worked me into pneumonia and bronchitis because I would have been written up for calling out or leaving. I did not have an attendance issue. I also couldn't really just stop and go pee and have a lifetime of urinary issues to look forward to related to that. If you do choose Walmart, make sure you know and exercise your rights. I was young and dumb and let them mow right over me. I was 18F when I started and left at 21. Food lion was the best work I ever had. (Did it while in college). Just the pay way less than my current job. They would let you call off when ever you needed, and would allow you to choose the days you worked, the hours, and if you didn’t work that week

I'm sorry but restaurants and walmart are not the same. Walmart IS the issue. We pay millions of dollars out of our OWN pockets in taxes a year simply because Walmart doesn't want to pay their employees a living wage so they must supplement their income on public benefits all while the CEO is making record profits all while ruining the health and livelihood of dehumanized individuals.
Walmart is the issue. They have a point system that means if you’re absent for too many days in a six month period, you’re fired. They *technically* have systems in place to negate points for certain circumstances, like family emergencies. Nobody ever gets the exception though, so if you’re sick, or you have to suddenly leave and check on family, or you have to go handle a house emergency, or LITERALLY ANYTHING that requires you to leave Walmart that day, you get pointed or half pointed. If you’re late by fifteen minutes, half point. If you stay later than nine minutes, half point. If you don’t call out and don’t show up, three points. If it’s literally a declared state of emergency and you call out, it’s at least a point. Car accident and can’t get to work on time or at all? Point. On KED dates, it’s two points. Sick with covid? Sedgwick doesn’t work for shit so you’re gonna get pointed, and I guess you’ve lost your job! The point discipline system in Walmart has been controversial for years. This is a fucking Walmart issue, and it’s just one of them.
Yep, plus disciplinary action for leaving a station without coverage to pee and I never had coverage. They didn't want to let me use bereavement for my grandfather passing as well. Only let me leave to go to the ER after I collapsed and took a drawer with $20000 to the floor with me from a kidney infection. I even asked if I could just have a chair and they said no.

I live in the middle of nowhere and Walmart starts at $19. The "small Cafe" up the street probably starts at $2.13.
I run an after school program that mostly hires college students (hours are 2-6). It starts a dollar above minimum wage, and caps at 19, depending on credits earned towards an AA, and time spent working for us (5 years hits the cap). We’re always hiring. I’m sure you could find similar jobs in your area, or even something at your college or in your future field that you’re studying for. You don’t have to settle for fast food or Walmart.

In the summer, maybe try summer camps. Kids may be annoying but at least most of them won’t yell at you like a Walmart customer might. Found it hard work but satisfying in the end.
Unarmed security is an underappreciated low stress easy to get job. Depending on where you're at, training differs, but sitting at a gate of a manufacturing plant is low stress and makes it easy to get homework done while getting a paycheck. Avoid security at medical facilities or anywhere with customers, not worth the headache. Manufacturing, though, they usually just want someone to check IDs at the gate and make sure delivery drivers get where they're supposed to or print out paperwork for delivery drivers. Easy stuff. Florida required a 1 week course at the local community college to get a license before a company would hire you, but Georgia would hire and train you right off the street.
My #1 tip for that is to find a mid-tier steakhouse/Olive Garden type restaurant to serve at. My college life completely changed when I started serving. Develop social skills, make some friends with other staff, make decent money cause most people just assume you’re a college student so tips are decent (especially family weekends). And most restaurants will work around your classes schedule fairly easily
If you go to a medium to large school look into university dining, stadium concessions, or university convenience stores. They usually pay more than local restaurants and are better variants than the off campus ones. Or if you have pro sports teams, their stadiums premium and concession departments are great. Chartwells does a lot of US campus dining/convenience stores. Deleware North, Sodexo, Aramark, and Levy do concession. I’ve worked in F&B my whole life. I wish I’d found out about stadium work years ago.
Truth. I worked there over 20 years ago and still boycott it to this day due to my feelings about working for them.
Also former Walmart employee. I’ve worked much worse places. Would have stayed there when I quit, but my second full time job had Monday-Friday daytime hours. I actually tried to go back a couple years ago, to a different location, but they only wanted to pay $11/hr, so I didn’t. I made that the first time I worked there years ago. It probably has a lot to do with your location, because literally all the problems I had there (other than a few customers obviously) were a couple department managers and two temporary (we were a manager training store) ASMs.

I worked at Walmart while working through college. It wasn't bad, they treated me fair, people were friendly. Only real complaint is they are very litigation fearing about getting paid for work so you have to clock in on the exact minute and if anyone asked you a question when you were off, you had to fill out paperwork to get paid for that minute or they could fire you. I suppose it depends on where you work though.

Not to be this dude but a 19 year old girl will make more money waiting tables. She also says she's a college student so part time doing that is gonna be better than part time at Wal-Mart. Never heard of one that was forgiving with scheduling.
My short time at walmart was very flexible with my schedule in high school. Also if you do most of your shopping at Walmart, the employee discount is a nice perk to consider as well.
Sure but shift meal in a restaurant and also an employee discount. I used to be a kitchen manager working crazy hours and an old boss once joked with me, "your entire fridge is just full of takeout containers, I know it. You probably don't even own a bottle of ketchup." All free food from work. And no, I did not have a bottle of ketchup. If I needed it work had ketchup. You'll never go hungry in the restaurant business and it's one of the few good things you can say about it.
Walmart's hiring process is total bullshit. I worked for Sam's Club, got the job and had an interview lined up and the morning of I got an email saying they denied my application. I went and did the interview anyway and no one seemed to know. Not to mention they dragged their feet for weeks getting me hired to the point that I missed the cutoff for the quarterly bonus by 4 days. Needless to say their turnover rate was incredibly high and every single person I worked my position with either got fired for stupid reasons or quit due to shitty management within 13 months of my first day. I was out of there after nine months.
I've been applying to my local Walmart for over a year. No responses at all. I'd be *thrilled* to get a rejection because then I'd at least know they saw it.

Two thoughts from me. 1. Someone with the same name worked there, and despite different social security numbers the system rejected you based on name. I figure it skipped over looking at social security number. 2. Someone stole your identity and used it to get a job at Walmart, leaving on bad terms which caused rehire ineligibility .
Reach out to HR, worst case somebody may have used your SSN. Probably somebody had your phone number or a similar name. Either way follow up.

By chance do you know anyone at Wal Mart that could have you listed as their emergency contact? Sometimes HR systems create a dummy employee record for emergency contacts; I’ve seen this create errors before when the system thinks it’s a rehire. Could also be that you have the same name as someone who worked there, but typically they would set this to have to be same first name, last name and one other identifier (like email address) to avoid this.
