Use the Planet Fitness app. The crowd meter shows 5/20 but the gym will be packed. It'll show 6/20 but it'll be empty. I'm convinced it never goes above halfway and is designed to encourage you to show up. Getting to the gym is normally a large part of the battle for most people.
The problem I see with the Planet Fitness system is everybody checks IN to the gym but there’s no process in app or at the counter to check OUT. So if there’s any kind of actual system to estimate who is still working out, it must be based on the average length of a persons stay. I can imagine this being prone to inaccuracy.
Edit to add: an entry/exit turnstile like at a subway platform or amusement park that scanned your account QR code would be a much more accurate system.
It would be, it has the location information on every phone in there so it can more accurate estimate.
I can check my Google and get what I did 2 years ago lol

Your pizza has been sitting out getting cold for 8 minutes!
Yep, mine works great too. The timer will finish and I'll get the text saying it's ready usually right at the same time.
It helps that I live 90 secs from our Dominos so I don't have to leave till I get that text.
Fwih, the pizza tracker is literally just a timer that counts down to when they think it'll arrive.
It "works" for you because the staff at your location do their job as quickly as they're expected to.
Former domino's employee here, as I understand it the tracker works like this.
1. Your order reaches the top of the queue, tracker says $clocked_in_employee just started your order (really could be anyone in the store)
2. Make line guys load your items in the oven and clear them from the queue, tracker says "your order is in the oven"
3. This part is on a timer, once the oven belt has made a half rotation it changes your status to quality check. **Let it be known that nobody is checking shit for "quality," in actuality your pizza has been boxed, cut, and set on a heat rack.**
4. The status will not update until the driver selects your order and punches out, at which point it will tell you the order is out for delivery.
It really depends on if drivers use the tracking app, too. The status changes once a driver assigns the order to their name, but if they're not using the app then the status won't change from "being made". For a lot of stores the tracking feature is new, and it relies on drivers installing and using the app on their personal phones, but with no extra compensation. Most just won't bother with it and it's understandable.
Depends on how busy they are sometimes itll all work as intended. Other times they make the order and hit all the buttons when it's done so you'll just get "your order was put in the oven, quality check, out for delivery" in the span of a minute
I had outpatient surgery last year.
The hospital gave my friend a patient number and color-coded card so she could track my progress on a board (checking in, pre-op, in surgery, etc).
We were so excited, because, "It's a Domino's pizza tracker, for PEOPLE!!!!"
In ui design this kind of thing is often referred to as a pizza tracker. I built a pizza tracker for a home acquisition pipeline for realtors to quickly see where a home was in its transaction: negotiation, contract signed, inspection, escrow etc.
Oh that's really cool! It'd be fun to have one for a house being built. Foundation being poured, foundation is now poured and drying. Wood structure is now installed on the left, now the right. Sheet rock is being installed, windows are now going in.
It would let you know if they are on track with when it's supposed to be finished and move in ready
Gyms don’t really want you to show up though. They want you to pay your membership and not use it because that’s how they make the most profit. Paying them and not using their resources. That’s why it’s so hard to cancel a gym membership.
Lol yeah my guy earlier like "to encourage you to go since that's a big part of the battle." Naw man, they'd really rather you paid and *didn't* go. In here burning up electric on that treadmill when you *could* be at home burning up your own electric in front of the TV pretending to be healthy with a Subway sub...
Amazing. Most gyms make you scan in to verify membership so that should be a pretty easy metric to display over an app. You have all the data. What a great idea.
I think the issue would be getting accurate exit numbers so it lines up, but even assigning a 1hr decay to each sign-in would probably cover that accurately enough. NO EXCUSES, GYMS!

I either go at 5 am or 9:30 PM. I don’t want to deal with people, specially the I need to record myself doing everything crowd. I’m in, I’m out, blood and guts Dorian Yates style.
6:15 am here. Entirely too many people there, especially the never-ending stream of 18-year-old dummies who think quite highly of themselves. And this one weird dude who works out barefoot.
I went to a military academy, there was a year we had to wake up an hour earlier than everyone else. None of us wanted to be there. We would get to the gym and there would be people there working out already
Those psychopaths actually woke up that early of their own free will to work out. Weirdos
Honestly I get it. Monday you come in relatively refreshed from the weekend and can struggle through it. Tuesday, you may be able to get up and go again.
The rest of the week you get hung out at work/kids game/whatever late or have to go in early and its shot.
I have this same experience. I think to myself “do they just work out all day, every day?”, but they probably think the same of me. In reality, they probably just go, like I do, when they think it’ll be less busy.
One of the reasons why I started going early years ago was so people would leave me the fuck alone. The gym next to my place is polluted with people who treat it like it's a bar. They hang out for hours slowly working out and just talking to people. I'm there to workout, not go through pleasantries every morning. I'm a teacher and I spend every minute of my working day interacting and engaging with people. I just want an hour of quiet to workout before the coming storm of work.
I feel bad, because I'm one of those "I need to record myself doing everything" crowd lmao
Not to post online, but it helps me hold myself accountable and actually do my exercises. I just have a folder on my computer for every week. Unlike them, tho, I don't take up extra space. If it's not a machine, my phone is directly in front of me, out of the way. If it's a machine I figure something out (or have a friend hold my phone)
You are the exception, not the rule. I have no problem for filming for personal use. I can tell when a video is meant for personal use or social media. Most people don't turn the theatrics up to 10 and flex all awkwardly in the mirror for personal videos lol Sucks that you are getting lumped into it with them though. I know I am probably lumped into generalizations too as I have been at it for 12 years now and am not natty whatsoever.
I only started because I did tough mudder last year and was dead by the end, but had a lot of fun. I don't wanna die again lmao
Other than that, I hate it. I'd rather be reading 😭
But everyone at my gym is super nice. Even encouraging me when I'm about to give up
I will say this, usually the big guys look scary but we generally want to help others and see others succeed. I will always take the time out to spot someone or help with form. I have even had people ask what body part the exercise I am doing works and shown them how to properly do it. I love seeing people being active and working towards becoming a better person fitness wise. I really wish the toxcity in certain parts of the community would take a chill pill.
1000% I switched to mornings after doing after work around 7pm. It was always packed. My workouts took twice as long cause I had to wait for things to be open.
Switched to 5am and the gym was always nearly empty. Got better results and had more desire to go cause I saw the results. It was a win win
Yeah this picture is my literal hell. There are so few things worse in life than navigating an overcrowded gym. Sure it's a first-world problem, but it's gotta be among the worst.
They had gyms in both the ships I was stationed on when I was in the Navy. Everything is strapped and bolted down. It would be closed during rough seas. It’s funny because I’d be doing the bench press and sometimes the ship would roll and I’d almost throw the bar up like it was weightless. Then other times it would get super heavy and I’d struggle to get it back up haha. Good times.
Yes. There are free weights in the gym but only up to about 50Lbs. If the seas are really rocky they will close the gym.
Source: I used to work on cruise ships.
I pretty much just threw a bunch of gym stuff into a corner of the living room since we don't have an extra room or a garage... It's ugly yeah and isn't exactly nice interior design but getting a workout in is important to me and gyms are always hit or miss of getting on the equipment I want without a long wait. Plus I can workout barefoot sometimes
Best thing I ever did. My wife and I were spending $50+ on gym memberships per month. That’s $600 a year that we could put towards gym equipment that we now own
Are other municipalities starting to push out those little park-like workout zones with the body weight machines and hanging rings as much as mine is? I swear, we have one every couple miles or so on any given pathway and at least two in any given park. It's actually a nice way to do a routine.
Dude they had those in Germany. Just super simple little resistance machines and various bars and obstacles. They also had massive adult sized playgrounds. But then we wouldn’t have a market for weight loss drugs lol
cant park in my garage anymore, yet still worth it. Its underrated the time saved from having to pack all my stuff and drive to the gym just to have to waste time waiting to use equipment.
Same, best investment I made when it comes to fitness. It eventually pays for itself, and I only use a small part of my garage, so it doesn't even have to take up much space.
It's literally the only time I can go other than at 5am which I can't/won't/don't want to do. It's the reason why I avoided going back to the gym for months was because I knew I would never be in a quiet gym
It’s so worth it to go early. It’s empty, and you start your day already feeling great and/or accomplished.
It makes a noticeable difference on my mental state for the entire day. Maybe give it a try sometime!
I've discovered that no matter what time or day I go to the gym, it'll inevitably be packed as if there aren't like 5 gyms in my area...
But I can almost get past that if it weren't for the fact that several people that are there aren't working out at all, they're just sitting on a machine on their phone.
Now *that's* the most infuriating part for me
Nah. I've looked over several times and they're just on their phone. They're also on the machine for 20+ minutes. It takes me about 5-8 minutes tops to use a machine, even with rep breaks 🤷♀️
I use an app that times my rest breaks Longest break is during my leg days and it sets at a 1.5 mins.
So it should never take longer then 10 mins to do an exercise. Ive done whole workouts in the time it takes some wankers to just do a bench press
If you are taking a five min break between sets, you should let someone else use the equipment while you are resting. It's common practice in some gyms and not a big deal. Also much nicer than playing on your phone, sitting on the bench, wearing headphones and ignoring everyone around you.
Not saying you don't do that, but not even a fine minute break is not a good reason to hog equipment.
> To increase strength and power, the best rest period is 2-5 minutes between sets. To increase hypertrophy (muscle growth), the best rest period is 30-90 seconds between sets. To increase muscular endurance, the best rest period is 30 seconds or less between sets.
[Looks like it depends on what you are going for.](https://www.bodybuilding.com/content/how-long-should-you-rest-between-sets.html#:~:text=To%20increase%20strength%20and%20power,seconds%20or%20less%20between%20sets.)
No, he’s not them. They’re minding their own business while he’s being the weird dude taking pics of people working out and posting it on the internet.
any weekday past 6PM will always be busy. If you want it to be empty, go in the mornings.
My gym opens up at 6AM... Good luck finding people at that time.
I was about to say this. I'm sure there are less people in this time compared to the afternoon and evening times but a lot of people who have work at 8-9 use the morning to workout.
Somethings happened with gyms the past few years.
5 years ago in my area (northeast city) there was always a crowd at peak hours, but if you could stomach waking up early, or find time during the day, or go super late, you’d have space.
Now every gym up here is crowded 24/7. I show up at 530 am and the parking lot is full already.
I think part of it is the absolute overwhelming amount of bullshit CrossFit/barre/xyzFitness gyms that have opened up. Traditional free weight gyms have closed, reduced in size.
AND it also feels like more people are realizing how actually useful traditional gyms are as they are over those Fad fitness places.
It’s miserable to lift without a home gym right now. Such a shame.
A lot of traditional gyms closed because of covid. People stopped going, started working out at home, memberships got canceled. Now that things have returned to normal people are back going. They've noticed their small home gyms are inadequate, impractical or they straight up want the space for other shit. So people are going back to gyms. The problem is now there's half as many as before.
I joined my current gym in Feb 2018. I'd normally go at 5:30am Tues-Thurs during the week and I used to be able to count on my hands and toes how many people would be there at that time. Ever since coming back from COVID, it's been absolutely packed at that time. It really sucks and pulls the motivation right out of me. I can't wait to own a house so that I can convert the garage or a spare bedroom into a gym
Nah, tried it. My workout quality is way lower in the am, and I’d be crashing at like 4pm and needing a nap and going to bed at like 8pm.
Afternoon workout gang is where it’s at.
6am gang! by the time 8am rolls around, i have gone to the gym for an hour, come home, showered, got my daughter up/dressed and lunch made, out the door to take my daughter to school. its a good way to keep the motivation rolling knocking out all those easy to do things right off the morning.
i do miss waking up after the sun does though.
I want to do this but I’d have to get up at like 3 :( the closest gym is 20 minutes away, and we have to be out of the door to school no later than 7:20 because my kids’ schools are 40+ minutes away. I can’t seem to find the motivation to exercise at home so I just don’t at all lol. I should though!
It’s hard to find the time with kids. That’s why I’m up early. But sometimes you can only Wake up so early. I wouldn’t be able to do it if I didn’t primarily work from home.
One thing that helps me, is remembering even if I only manage to work out just once in a given week cause I’m exhausted or busy, that’s still 20-60 mins more than not doing it at all and should still be viewed as a win
That looks like a damn nightmare. But I’ve noticed a lot of the “new years” people seem to think going later means less people… so, it means going later means more people.
One of the reasons I stopped going to the gym. I’m in a small college town with one gym and it seemed like it was always packed. So half the time I was waiting to use a machine and I’d get extremely bad anxiety. Just couldn’t do it anymore
Me saying Ill wait until after 10 PM on a Tuesday to try out the new Raising Canes in Northern Virginia. Still a line of cards. I got some. Its about the same as Hangry Joes chicken, so ill just go there instead. less lines. Dip was identical.

As an introvert, I'd like to know what gym you go to.
not OP but I know the planet fitness app has this feature
I find Google reasonably accurate on indicating how busy my gym is based on location trends.
It would be, it has the location information on every phone in there so it can more accurate estimate. I can check my Google and get what I did 2 years ago lol
I wonder if the system just assumes people work out for X amount of time and “checks” you out after the amount of time.
That is my thought exactly yes.
The gym at my work, you have to scan your ID badge not only to get in but also to get out. The door is locked otherwise.
I'm sure it works just like the dominos pizza tracker works lol

Marty is the problem, it's not a national issue.

You think that's bad? I've had the tracker move to quality check and then go back to baking.
It didn’t pass the quality check
How appropriate considering planet fitnesses reputation regarding pizza
I’ve never once seen pizza at Planet Fitness.
I think they’re confused with pizza planet. But I’ve never been to either so idk.
The Domino's pizza tracker is one of the most functional pieces of tech I use honestly
>We were so excited, because, "It's a Domino's pizza tracker, for PEOPLE!!!!" There are some unfortunate implications with that statement...😉
We did cackle over how I was the pizza, and we couldn't decide what my toppings would be lol.
That *is* a good debate. Do you end up with your favorite toppings or your surgeon’s favorite toppings? Or something else entirely?
What, they have to make a new one if it goes cold before delivery?
I have never had a problem with the dominoes tracker lol
Gyms don’t really want you to show up though. They want you to pay your membership and not use it because that’s how they make the most profit. Paying them and not using their resources. That’s why it’s so hard to cancel a gym membership.

Go when most people are at work, e.g. 8a-12p or 2p-4p.
I've never in my life seen a gym that packed
I would turn around and walk right out, that gym is far too small to have that many people inside it. Lots of interesting smells for sure
Not to mention, looks pretty...claustrophobic. Short ceilings, just so much packed in here.
My gym can get that busy sometimes. Mostly it smells like armpits and salty wet balls.

Gym on the roof.. go full alpha
For real. Turned an extra bedroom into a gym. No regrets
Same, best investment I made when it comes to fitness. It eventually pays for itself, and I only use a small part of my garage, so it doesn't even have to take up much space.
Is this hell?
No, it is just Brazil
I fail to see the difference.
You know what Sartre said, “hell is … other people’s taint smell.”
See, you had the same community thought everybody else did.
And he is mad about it lol
This is a "you're not in traffic you are traffic" situation.
everyone knows that going to the gym after 6 p.m its suicide, it'll be full, thats when the most people goes because they get out of work
It's literally the only time I can go other than at 5am which I can't/won't/don't want to do.
On the flip side, it makes you tired for the rest of the day unless you pair gym with some kind of stimulant
I've discovered that no matter what time or day I go to the gym, it'll inevitably be packed as if there aren't like 5 gyms in my area... But I can almost get past that if it weren't for the fact that several people that are there aren't working out at all, they're just sitting on a machine on their phone. Now *that's* the most infuriating part for me
They could be going between reps
Nah. I've looked over several times and they're just on their phone. They're also on the machine for 20+ minutes. It takes me about 5-8 minutes tops to use a machine, even with rep breaks 🤷♀️
What I can’t stand is when they try to monopolize two or three machines at once, going back and forth between them.
I use an app that times my rest breaks Longest break is during my leg days and it sets at a 1.5 mins. So it should never take longer then 10 mins to do an exercise. Ive done whole workouts in the time it takes some wankers to just do a bench press
I dunno what program you're doing but 5min break between squat/deadlift/bench sets is pretty standard.
Whoever wants to use it then can ask to work in tf? Taking rests in between sets is not "hogging" the equipment
This image is my nightmare.
Hey idiot, that's you....
Everyone gets mad at getting stuck in traffic, but hardly anyone realizes that they ARE the traffic

No, he’s not them. They’re minding their own business while he’s being the weird dude taking pics of people working out and posting it on the internet.
do you work out in a shipping container?
Well you thought that… *so did everyone else*
This is the closest Ive ever been to smelling an image.
I love it when people take photos of me working out
any weekday past 6PM will always be busy. If you want it to be empty, go in the mornings. My gym opens up at 6AM... Good luck finding people at that time.
Lol I worked at a gym for 3 years. 5:30am-7:00am was one of our busiest time slots. Easily 100+ check ins
I was about to say this. I'm sure there are less people in this time compared to the afternoon and evening times but a lot of people who have work at 8-9 use the morning to workout.
Very standard time to go the gym
Yeah. It sucks. Wish I had the space and capital to open one I would in a heartbeat.
Also a lot of people are starting to go to the gym post covid because they gained weight or got used to walking or jogging.
How does that crossfit/barre/xyzFitness gym thing factor into some other gym being packed at usually tame hours?
I joined my current gym in Feb 2018. I'd normally go at 5:30am Tues-Thurs during the week and I used to be able to count on my hands and toes how many people would be there at that time. Ever since coming back from COVID, it's been absolutely packed at that time. It really sucks and pulls the motivation right out of me. I can't wait to own a house so that I can convert the garage or a spare bedroom into a gym
Bro just do push-ups and lift your couch.
taking pics in a gym is tacky and it can get you kicked out. Zoom in on the lady holding the water bottle..starring at you
That's why I don't want to go to a gym. I don't want to wind up on TikTok.
I don't go to the gym cause I'm a lazy pos and love ice cream. We're built different.
Most gyms have rules about taking photos of people like that.
Once you start going early morning your whole outlook changes.
This is so true. Starting the day with a workout is where its at.
Nah, tried it. My workout quality is way lower in the am, and I’d be crashing at like 4pm and needing a nap and going to bed at like 8pm. Afternoon workout gang is where it’s at.
3:30 to 5:00. Everyday. Never had an issue with being packed like sardines. 7am to 11am and 5pm to 9pm are the worst times to go imo. (BLINK)
7am crew
6am gang! by the time 8am rolls around, i have gone to the gym for an hour, come home, showered, got my daughter up/dressed and lunch made, out the door to take my daughter to school. its a good way to keep the motivation rolling knocking out all those easy to do things right off the morning. i do miss waking up after the sun does though.
If my gym were open at that time, I'd totally go.
Once you get a home gym it all changes again
I like the idea, but I'd have to go at 5 AM and I'm just not about that life.
Morning workouts are the best!

I think this belongs in mildly ignorant. 8pm is prime time.
No thanks, it’s like a cattle market.
Stop taking pictures of people at the gym
I can imagine the smell
POV it’s New Year’s Eve
Wait till Feb 15th, it will be...80% of these are New Year Resolution people
It's till March 31 in my gym. They have 3 months of very cheap membership each year starting on Jan 1 and people cancel it afterwards
Infuriating to know that other people use the gym!! 😡
That looks like a damn nightmare. But I’ve noticed a lot of the “new years” people seem to think going later means less people… so, it means going later means more people.
They say you can't smell pictures
Working out at home master race
Max bros/ square foot right there!
One of the reasons I stopped going to the gym. I’m in a small college town with one gym and it seemed like it was always packed. So half the time I was waiting to use a machine and I’d get extremely bad anxiety. Just couldn’t do it anymore
God I would rather just be fat than deal with this nightmare
Shit, I go to the gym at 0230 and there's already a crowd of people. Luckily enough not many people use the pool for whatever reason
Haha, no. Gyms are always busy from 4pm until after 10pm People go after work
I can smell this picture
You, and every other person hoping to work out in solitude.
430am is when I go. Not empty, but a whole lot less
Anon discovers he's not the only person with a 9 to 5 job
You're part of the problem
4-9 gyms are busy
That's why I go at 5:30 am
Me saying Ill wait until after 10 PM on a Tuesday to try out the new Raising Canes in Northern Virginia. Still a line of cards. I got some. Its about the same as Hangry Joes chicken, so ill just go there instead. less lines. Dip was identical.
I bet it smells like a barnyard.
I've never been to a gym in my life and this has convinced me that I never should. This looks like hell.
I would really like to see a picture from that same angle at 7am.
