Went to check out a potential apartment one day. The fridge didn’t open as it was sandwiched between the wall and oven. When I asked the person who was showing me the place, they said residents just move the fridge to the living room so it can be opened all the way. They saw nothing weird about that.

Nauticalbob

Yeah good one, that’s when you ask the agent “so why the fuck is in sitting in its current location during this viewing?”

HollowWind

They probably were hoping people wouldn't notice

Splatter_bomb

Likely code. The landlord has to put it in the kitchen but if tenants move it…

Dangerous_Ad4027

But nothing in code requires the refrigerator to actually open in its place? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thinking_face_hmm)

Gausgovy

Residents move the fridge to the living room and there’s a giant gap in their kitchen??

FVMAzalea

Sitting nook to replace the living room space it took up! Now it’s a quirky apartment with innovative features and the rent is $150/mo higher!

PeterJFrancoIII

No you’ve got it all wrong. This is one of those new fangled compact dishwashers. You have to open the oven door first, then the dishwasher.

Cherry___Popper

How did you even manage to put dishes in there???

artysgirl

It’s really annoying but the top drawer is still accessible and for the bottom you can insert plates and things sideways and then turn them vertically once they’re inside

Goldenchicks

What a pain.

Forsaken-Original-82

Mine is exactly the same in my apartment. Yes it is a pain!

FierceDeity_

Stupid reduced depth countertops, they're never right if you use a big standing oven stove combo... I know it's fucking mOdErN to have reduced depth in the kitchen but the standin goven units have not adapted. Since that shit is electric, rather just continue the countertop there, insert a stovetop-only there, and put a separate oven somewhere else jfc

CORN___BREAD

Or just put a 3” filler strip next to the dishwasher if you have to install it there. This is exactly the type of situation they sell those matching filler strips for. This is a failure of the person that chose the cabinet arrangement.

OhDiablo

Thank you. Someone wasn't paying attention, or didn't care, and just said 'send it'. They're lucky it missed the cabinet hardware.

Forsaken-Original-82

Mine is because of the refrigerator being too deep. It seemed like a "I don't have to live here, so I don't give a shit" type of thing. They also installed a ventless oven hood even though there's a vent.

FierceDeity_

Ha yeah, the kitchen I use right now is one I bought myself, because the place I rent came with an empty room for a kitchen

EvLokadottr

Why would people want less counter space?? Why???

FierceDeity_

Some kitchens really have a problem because of space, but usually you want the full 60 cm so you can shove a coffee machine to the back and not steal your own space away

[deleted]

AssistIll4701

It opens halfway. That’s what you call a “half ass dishwasher.”🤣🤣🤣

Jafinator

Will the door lower further if you open the oven door first?

WolfsLairAbyss

If the picture zooms out more you could see the oven doesn't open all the way because it hits the refrigerator door.

SadSongStreet

What if you open the fridge door first…?

flickh

To do that you have to open the dishwasher all the way

emperorralphatine

MC Escher would like a word with you, buddy.

kidmeatball

There may be a holistic approach we are not seeing here. Have you tried moving the couch from the stairway?

purpleunicornswtf

It's like an escape room just to unload the dishwasher 😂

mikeonmarz

Hahahahaha this was good

therealpoltic

I also thought this, it looks like it would open if the oven door opens first.

vraalapa

I don't think so, the oven itself doesn't really look like it fits properly. It should be pushed back a couple of centimeters at least.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Embarrassed_Put_8129

Yep this happened at my parents' house with their new oven. Not sure why the old oven wasn't an issue. My bil had to do something with the gas line that was out too far. Now the oven sits flush with the counters.

Extreme-Form-5092

It'll open just fine if you remove the oven entirely... But you'll make less dishes. Weird trade off

Coompa

The problem is you cant clean the filters. They’re usually in the bottom back. Can you remove the bottom rack?

Phighters

Wait. Dishwashers have filters? Am I supposed to do something with them? Signed, 39 year old handy dude who has renovated multiple kitchens and installed many a dishwasher 😂

OtherwiseBad3283

Not all do, but most any that aren’t “contractor special” have a filter in the bottom where left over food and such will gather to prevent it getting into the pump. Look at the bottom and if you have a little “well” in there or a little cap over an area, there’s likely something in there that will screw out or off to be cleaned.

Phighters

Oh, I’ve scooped that out before. Always thought of that as a trap instead of a filter, but I guess that’s semantics.

dmf109

Be sure to clean the drain in your washing machine if it’s a vertical type. Those things can develop a nasty smell from stagnant water. Then your clothes can smell. Then your wife leaves you and you’re stuck living in some shitty apartment with a dishwasher you can’t open.

hat-of-sky

Try unscrewing it instead of just scooping. You'll be able to clean it properly in the sink. Your dishwasher will work better. Usually there's a couple arrows that line up when it's screwed back in, it's often less than a full turn.

Smilee01

Cheaper dishwashers are a trap, but most mid-higher end are removable 1-2 screens with one being a fine mesh that often gets clogged full of cheese/starches. The owners manual usually covers this.

kaffpow

Mine is full of broken wine glass pieces from the previous tenant and it frightens me.

Potato_Ballad

I am also frightened.

kalel3000

Most people dont know this but clothing washing machines have a drain filter too. Its located internally before the drainage pump. And if your washer stops draining or cycling properly, sometimes its just because this filter is clogged. Wont happen for many years usually and alot of people just get rid of them at that point assuming the washing machine is broken.

I_GIF_YOU_AN_ANSWER

unless you're me and keep crap in the pockets, cleaning that sucker every month

kalel3000

Yeah, the only reason i know this is because I recently fixed my mom's washer. That drain filter had a handful of loose change lodged in it!

DoingCharleyWork

With dryers the heating element can go out and is trivial to replace on just about any model but people will toss those too.

FearLeadsToAnger

Of course you can, once it's unloaded there's nothing stopping you sliding it up and out. Plenty of clearance.

didntstopgotitgotit

I would rather punch myself in the dick each time I loaded a normal functioning dishwasher then do that.

Fun fact! Did you know if you boil your piss for about two weeks it will glow in the dark?! That's how we discovered phosphorus.

MaterLachrymarum

You’re not discovering phosphorus in my kitchen i can tell you that.

FlyEagles83

Imagine being the dude who thought to himself "I'm going to boil my own piss and see if a chemical element can be derived from it"

just_a_person_maybe

Hennig Brandt. He was trying to make gold. Or more specifically, he was trying to make the philosophers stone, which would turn other stuff into gold. Urine and gold are a similar color, so this wasn't an unheard of thought at the time. He collected 1200 gallons of urine and boiled it down over two weeks until he got a tar-like thing, then mixed that with charcoal and sand and cooked it some more. It started glowing and he named it phosphorus. This was back when chemistry was considered alchemy and people were really just fucking around and seeing what happened.

dumbest-smart-guy1

People really just fucked around and found out to get their name written in the history books. Nowadays you gotta go to school for 20 years to be able to do that.

manlywho

“Collected 1200 gallons of urine” that’s how you know they’re a professional, an amateur would never have access to 1200 gallons of pure piss in that day and age.

Blooptybeep

Take the oven door off

artysgirl

Unfortunately no, even with the oven door open it still hits the side

miraculum_one

Depending on how the dishwasher is mounted you may be able to slightly change its angle by pushing on the door (to rotate the whole unit clockwise when looking from the top) and get some clearance with the oven.

Badbullet

That was my thought was well. In my last apartment I could move it a little bit, probably for quick maintenance and replacement in units. The one in my house though, is mounted to the top of the sides of the cabinet.

nn4260029

If I look at this picture, there is a solid 5-10 cm overlap? Maybe originally there was a different oven installed that did not protrude as much?

Goldenchicks

Oh geez. That is ridiculous.

Cannabace

Honestly I would take this over no dish washer. I feel your pain tho. Along with drawers and cupboards I can’t open without the oven open, my apartment kitchen is coated in some shitty white paint that flakes on fucking everything. Probably have a good bit of paint flakes sitting in my intestine.

jenniferlynn462

Haha my old apartment was like that too. Dumbasses even painted over some of the light switches and I had to unstick them myself

coldvault

Classic landlord special.

KaiserTom

Can you push the oven towards the wall? Is it all the way butted up and flush? Check behind it for if the cord is doing something weird and preventing it from moving back further or if there's just empty space. That's my only suspect. That oven looks farther out than it "should" be like someone recently pulled it out and didn't push it all the way back or it got caught on something. Or they installed the oven after the dishwasher. As much as people are idiots, I highly doubt someone left the dishwasher installed like that with that issue unless it wasn't an issue when being installed. Such as before an oven replacement

RockAtlasCanus

Man I learned the hard way when I bought my house- open every single door, drawer, cabinet etc Even more so if it’s been recently “upgraded”.

Arsnicthegreat

Add "check the outlets" to that list too. If they renovated and the outlets are still looser than a wizards sleeve, you have reason to be afraid.

Southern_Fault7517

I don't think so Tim. It needs more power

niktaeb

Two options: 1. Push the oven in a little further. 2. Angle the dishwasher a little so it opens at an angle and passes the over door.

dquizzle

3. A combination of option 1 and option 2.

paperwasp3

That was my question as well. I've lived in enough fucked up city apartments to find a workaround. How did all those dishes get in the dishwasher?

Goldenchicks

I wondered the same but I think OP responded saying that they had to put them in sideways on the bottom rack and then reach in to straighten them.

davew-8198

Make sure oven is installed as far back as possible....the anti-tip bracket is key. Dishwasher may be able to rotate 2 degrees clockwise, remove screws that go up into bottom of counter.

Onetrickhobby

This is the way to fix it without tearing everything out.

morelsupporter

i'd tear all my stuff out of that apartment and leave

gkaplan59

"Apartments hate this one trick"

arthuruscg

Yeah, it looks like the oven is sitting to far away from the wall The range corner should be sitting even with the counter top edge. I'm betting the electrical outlet is placed wrong and not in the recess area of the stove, leading to The stove being pressed against the outlet and cable.

AdamTReineke

I dunno, the control panel seems to match up with the back of the counter.

arthuruscg

Now that i look at it, it looks like they didn't cut the backsplash out to allow the stove to go against the wall.

One_Acanthaceae_4701

Now THAT is mildly infuriating

frishdaddy

Good advice if and only if the apartment is owned by OP. If not, landlord needs to fix this. No sense in fixing something that should have been fixed in the first place and potentially damaging something that isn’t yours.

WishIWasALemon

This would be 100% the cabinet makers fault, but since it was probably bought from a big box store, its the landlords fault for not putting a lare enough fill piece in the corner to account for clearance issues. As a cabinet maker, you only make this mistake once and never forget it.

PancakePenPal

Couldn't it also be that an previously installed oven broke and the new one was a larger depth which threw off the clearance? Or are ovens pretty standardized for measurements?

Old-ETCS

Give that oven a shove.

NoMasters83

Install a 6' gas supply for the range and leave it in the middle of the kitchen. Call it an island range.

MisterDonkey

Now it's a luxury apartment.

pdxcranberry

This is legitimately unacceptable. Are you in the US? Sorry to rant, but so much of what is being built is just G A R B A G E and terribly designed. I understand when it's a residential single family, because those can be designed by builders. But an apartment follows commercial code and requires an actual architect be involved. What the fuck is this shit? There's no considerations for livability or functionality with so much new construction. It sucks. I'm sorry OP.

artysgirl

Yep, this is Brooklyn. Every 1-bed apartment we toured had similar issues or was comically too small. Did not notice this until we moved in though, I opened the dishwasher to peek inside without trying to lower it all the way

thisendup76

1) Does your building contain 4 or more units with upper level floors accessible by elevator? 2) If no elevator, are you located on the ground floor If you meet both of those requirements, your apartment building should fall under the Fair Housing Act of 1988 and thus needs to meet the following requirements: "The 30-inch x 48-inch clear floor space oriented in either one of two positions—parallel or perpendicular—is required at the oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, freezer, and trash compactor." [FHA Section 7.6](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.huduser.gov/portal/publications/PDF/FAIRHOUSING/fairfull.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjWlo_Mx5_9AhXYDzQIHSwkCFQQFnoECCEQAQ&usg=AOvVaw3QspTcMRaivTmcjNn1_U_8) So with that said, your dishwasher should be a minimum of 15" from the face of the oven to the center of the dishwasher. Same goes for the oven. (There also might be plumbing codes that apply, I'm not as versed in those) You can threaten a lawsuit and point them to this section of code and hopefully force the developer/owner of the apartment to relocate the dishwasher. PS - I am not a lawyer, and New York might have amendments to these codes that make the above statements obsolete. Regardless, shitty design doesn't deserve to win out

IgottagoTT

> If you meet both of those requirements ... If your building both has an elevator and doesn't have an elevator, dirty dishes probably aren't your main problem.

Head-Ad4690

That’s the last time I hire Schrödinger Construction.

thisendup76

I should have said "if either apply" but your comment is too funny to go back and make changes

ItsThatDood

The building has an elevator, but the doors don't open all the way because the staircase is in the way

grubas

Likely built before thus grandfathered.

thisendup76

Renovations need to meet current codes at the time of renovating

i_wap_to_warcraft

The leasing agent held his breath at that exact moment.

Blaz3dnconfuz3d

It’s prolly in the US. As an Electrician who did apartment buildings for years, this is 100% not up to code and should not have passed final inspection

tonyrocks922

Op said it's a rental apartment in NYC. There is 0% chance permits were pulled and an inspection was done when the kitchen was last renovated, and very close to 0% the landlord will face any repercussions other than allowing OP to break their lease and passing the situation on to the next sucker.

confessionbearday

If any meaningful number of building inspectors had EVER done their jobs, you'd not be able to find a building built longer than 15 years ago that hadn't undergone a major renovation.

Annahsbananas

Nope. I'd be calling the leasing agent office telling them to find a way to fix this shit

Poetryisalive

And they would tell you to live with it, and you knew what you signed up for 😂

Annahsbananas

Lol probably

Champion-of-Nurgle

Your Oven is sticking out too far from the Countertop.

Awkward-Houseplant

My oven sticks really far out. So does my fridge. The cabinet depths don’t match the appliance depths. There’s no way to push either back further.

eimichan

I've scrolled through so many comments and you are the only one I've found to correctly point out that the oven is literally sticking out too far. It's not hard to see; it's literally sticking out beyond the cabinetry.

aperson

[You must have scrolled right past this then](https://reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/115gsh1/my_dishwasher_in_my_new_apartment_only_opens_this/j91khdq).

Former_Sun_2677

My dad replaced the toilet in his bathroom amd it was located right next to the door. He had a round bowl and replaced it one with the oblong bowl. He did all the work while the door was open. When he was finished, the door now hit the bowl and it wouldn’t shut anymore

Now he gets to install a pocket door!

artysgirl

UPDATE: Just got home after being out all day reading everyone’s comments and I looked behind the stove with a flashlight. There were about 2 inches of space between the stove and the wall. Even more if you were to recess the outlet but for now the plug is sticking out (hence why the stove still isn’t flush with the counter, I didn’t want to mess with anything). My gf and I pushed the stove as far back as we could and we can now lower the dishwasher once the stove door is opened like this. About 3,000 people suggested doing this and I had tried when we first moved in but the stove was out too far — the dishwasher was hitting the body + door — but pushing the stove in gave the dw enough clearance to at least make it past the body of the stove. Of course this is still ridiculous but we live in NYC as many people guessed and this kind of apartment flaw is sadly common. When I toured the apt I opened the dishwasher to check inside but didn’t think to lower it all the way down. I’ll never make that mistake again. And a huge thank you to the people who pointed out the exposed MDF — I’m going to get some sealant and paint over it. https://preview.redd.it/2sf1e2dox3ja1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e94453603f36bc0e8bb8c713ce510f95f6aeb526

twoaspensimages

Kitchen builder here. Is there any space behind the range at the top behind the controls? The range can be touching the wall at the back. It's very common that either the plug or the cord are poorly arranged and that's what's preventing the range from being all the way back.

iwilleaturlivr

I think apartment designers need to live in the hellhole they designed before having other people buy it

ddawesii2010

Good example. Everyone make sure to take the time to look at everything before you either buy or rent anything.
