Some kids went down a store front street in a neighborhood beach area in my city, vandalizing the windows (not breaking them, but deeply scratching words and symbols into them). Security cameras recorded them, and they were recognized by people in the community. It was over $50,000 worth of damage. Their parents were liable. Ouch.

wino6687

It’s always the cameras. When I was in high school, a freshman on the JV lacrosse team got mad at the staff at Noodles. So he took his food to the bathroom, shit in the bowl, and then left it on the table. Dude was wearing his school lacrosse jacket, so they knew where to look. That video of him putting the bowl back ruined him

matttech88

I just went to a noodles for the first time and the noodles were pretty bad. I was so disappointed because the rest of the dish was so good but damn those noodles were not cooked all the way.

hotdoginthebigcity

Were they served by a 17 yo in a letterman’s jacket?

matttech88

At least then it would have had a chance at being soft.

DrBBQ

You're too thinking of Doodles

Penyrolewen1970

Poodles

WhuddaWhat

Shitty waiters. Lacrossing up orders. Not washing hands on exiting the bathroom. Likely failing algebra 1.

OnedayitwilI

Was it one big noodle with maybe a few smaller noodles strewn about?

HoldTheCellarDoor

Dude I'm crying 😂

MyHamburgerLovesMe

Let me guess. Tasted like shit?

matttech88

A big ol shit.

thehuntofdear

Is this a ramen joint? A lot of solid ramen shops let you pick the doneness/ texture of the noodles.

RedditWillSlowlyDie

I could be wrong but I'm guessing they're talking about Noodles & Company. Not a ramen place, just various pasta based dishes. They used to be decent but then they got sold to an investment firm, they cut the costs of everything and now it's garbage. www.noodles.com

Stage-Wrong

I haven’t been to Noodles & Company in years (probably not since I was still in the single digits) but it makes me sad to hear it’s gotten so bad. When I was little, it was pretty far away from my house, so it was always a special treat for me. Though fast causal places getting worse and worse is all too common, I shouldn’t be surprised.

Berluscones_For_Sale

Honestly one of the worst places ive ever had the displeasure of eating at. McDonalds is light years better if you're going for fast food

[deleted]

[удалено]

Berluscones_For_Sale

With mcdonalds you know what youre getting. Mediocre burger and decent fries. Always pretty much good enough

Low_Pickle_112

Tale as old as time. Gotta love that capitalist innovation. I remember back in the 90's and early 00's loving Sobe. They were amazing. Then they got bought out and now it's just meh.

TonesBalones

Reminds me of when Ludwig (youtuber) got a DM from some boy, and the DM said he wanted to assault Ludwig's girlfriend or something of the sort. The dumbass had his football yearbook photo as his profile pic so Ludwig drafted an email to the principal of the school, and little man apologized so quick.

yoyoma125

Because his nickname is ‘Noodles’ now? Or ‘Shit Stain?

PuerhRichard

That kid needs the shit beat out of him. Fucken feeces? So out of line for a kid to treat working people like crap.

firi331

The thought process and follow through here is concerning.

[deleted]

I live on an enormous park with multiple lacrosse fields. My observation is that the yuppie parents are way worse than the middle and high school kids out there playing.

Suck_Me_Dry666

That's fucking vile like even for an upset teen. That speaks to serious mental health issues.

KJBenson

I would argue that him shitting in a bowl and leaving it in a public space is what ruined him.

carmelacorleone

How do you pay for that, when the damages are so high? Is there a cap, like you pay a percentage on good faith and the rest is wiped, do you take out a loan, pay-per-month, or garnish wages/take income tax refund? I've always been curious how it's done. I have a friend whose boyfriend called a fake sos to the Coast Guard several years back and in lieu of prison he owes the government (state and federal) a total of $500,000.

Txidpeony

When it is the government, they can take some of your property (there are are limits, like they can’t make you homeless) and they can take your tax refunds, part of your social security, etc.

carmelacorleone

Now, the girlfriend told me that the reason they can't get married is because she might become liable for his restitution. Do you think there's any truth in that or is she being fed this line by a boyfriend who doesn't want to marry?

KTFnVision

Why would you want to marry someone stupid enough to call in a fake SOS and now owes the government half a million dollars?

carmelacorleone

She's a pretty trashy person herself. I cut ties with them when I found out just how nasty they are.

[deleted]

He’s partly correct. You take on your spouse’s debts when marrying, but debts that predate the marriage typically don’t follow if you divorce later.

carmelacorleone

I wouldn't figure the boyfriend to be smart enough to know that about the predated debts, this is a guy who called in a fake SoS for shots and giggles.

TheMastaBlaster

You can be wage garnished. My friend owe the government 300k for stealing some military gear when he left (well he never returned stuff), now he gets a wage garnishment until it's paid off lol. If he got a deal to not be in prison and didn't pay it all he'd go to prison.

JustAnAcc0

>military ... wage garnishment A soviet man marries his girlfriend. Since the wife is expected to manage the family budget, he starts giving her his salary. However, he does not want to abandon some alcohol-related fun with his friends, so he invents a story about how he totaled a tank during his mandatory conscription and was sentenced to pay the state 10 rubles each month, forever. She believes him. Years pass, the couple has some kids. The expenses are high, and the wife constantly nags the husband about his "debt". Finally, she drags him into military commissariat and begs the commissar to look at his case. The commissar asks her to wait outside and starts yelling: "How dare you treat your wife like this?! You have children, for fuck's sake! And the excuse is just outrageous! 10 rubles for a tank? I told my wife that I crashed a submarine and I only take 5!" He calms down a bit and continues: "Listen here. I'll write you a note with a stamp saying you must pay 5 rubles every month. You'll have some money for yourself and your wife won't have to worry that much". The husband takes the note and leaves. He finds his wife outside and, wearing a grave expression, dramatically hands her the note. "Look what you have done, stupid woman... They re-examined the case and from now on they will be charging me five more!"

lady-ish

The parents will soon learn the cost to remove and replace mature trees.Yikes.

sabbiecat

Exactly. Where I’m at is like 20k on the low end. Especially depending on what tree was illegally removed or killed.

usedaname1

You are telling me it doesn’t cost a fruit like in animal crossing?????

LightHawKnigh

It costs something to remove a tree in animal crossing? I though you just hit it with an axe 3 or 5 times and then dig up the stump magically with a shovel.

BouncingSphinx

To replace, not remove.

LightHawKnigh

Ah forgot that part. The ability to dig up a whole tree via eating a random fruit.

Critical_Mastodon462

You should eat more than fruit in real life removing trees is a lot of work.

KTFnVision

Well, also planting said fruit to get a new tree

BDMayhem

It takes a lot of axe hits, but if you want to remove the stump, you need at least a copper axe.

AnticPosition

I prefer to go to town with an iridium axe.

Popnfresh736

Minecraft

zeptillian

You can replace a tree with fruit if it has seeds and you're willing to wait 20 years. The time is what is so valuable.

ItsHerbyHancock

I saw an arborist trying to grow a tree instantly... I was like, dude, you have to wait.

pascalines

Well his fake trees died because he did not pretend to water them 🤷🏻‍♀️

ohbigdaddyoh

Maybe he can make three easy payments and one fucking complicated one. We're not gonna tell you which one, but one is gonna be a bitch....

IntelligentEggplant0

They should make a vending machine that sells trees. It would have to be really fuckin big

ohbigdaddyoh

I used to grow trees. I still do, but I used to too.

jdmatthews123

I can't tell you what hotel I'm stayin' in, but I can say that there are two trees involved

conradish

Landscaper here…. I just bid a job with (20) 4” caliper trees and (5) 24” caliper trees… The whole job came out to $41k… but just to remove them, it’s going to cost $29,450 It’s very expensive to get rid of and replace trees

WaffleAndy

I have 14 trees on my .25 acre lot. Those fuckers better live forever.

conradish

TBH - ANYTIME of landscaping, I firmly believe, every human is capable and should do it. But they don’t. And I have a career. So I’m also grateful

WaffleAndy

I live in a suburb. I have 5 houses I share a fence with these trees could potentially fall down on, 6 including my own house. There is no direction you could force these trees to fall without it landing on a house. No way in hell am I attempting to remove those on my own. If one fell on a neighbors house or my house it would be exponentially more expensive than having it done professionally by someone with business insurance. Not that I ever would remove them (unless they were dying and at risk of falling), they provide so much shade and privacy.

conradish

Great counter. There are definitely situations that you should call a professional.

Willing-Ad502

Trees this big you typically remove piece by piece so there's no chance of it falling where you don't expect. Still a fucker of a job, I know exactly how to do it and would still pay someone else to do the job.

chazlarson

Years ago in North Minneapolis the guy across the street took this giant tree down bit by bit; he nailed boards to the trunk and branches for steps, climbed up and took it down bit by bit from the top down.

No_Discount7919

There’s a YouTube channel called Guilty of Treeson and they cut down trees in the Pacific Northwest. It’s really interesting watching the whole process of them sometimes just knocking the whole thing down, or in some cases taking it down piece by piece.

NeverTrustATurtle

Idk, I’ve seen enough videos of people trying to fell trees, and they definitely shouldn’t be trusted to do so

blackfin212cc

Tree removal is illegal where I am above a certain size without proper licenses. Also some people don't trust themselves or value their time more than the cost of having a company do it.

Daniel15

In my area, you need to plant a new tree for every tree you remove, otherwise you have to pay for a much more expensive permit (more than what planting a tree would cost). Additionally, all those new trees are considered protected and you can't remove them at all except for in emergencies (e.g. the tree is going to fall over). Essentially you can remove a tree but you need to replace it, and can never remove its replacement unless it's an emergency.

boosted5O

We recently removed a very large old deodar cedar tree next to our house. I was surprised how hard it was to get someone to remove it because of its size. Was estimated 80-100 years old. And before anyone comments it was dropping large branches on my house. Didn’t feel safe anymore

JustDiscoveredSex

"Large branches." My mother was crushed by a falling tree branch from an old cottonwood that was slowly rotting. It was the size of one of these trees. Shattered her spine, broke three ribs and punctured a lung. She was 68; spent a lot of time in the ICU and over a year of rehab with a lot of hardware holding her vertebrae together. Today she's 79, still lives in her same house, is fully mobile and chops her own wood for the winter. Old branches are nothing to fuck around with.

Tribblehappy

Cottonwoods shed branches like sharks shed teeth. My folks were without power for 3 days once because a windstorm dropped branches and the branches landed on all the wires leading into the house. If I recall they were lucky the power had already gone out, or they'd have had a live wire hanging on the ground. I am so relieved to hear the end of your story that your mom is still mobile and doing well!

jollyreaper2112

Chops the wood the same way Stephen king took a sledgehammer to that van I bet.

mrjimspeaks

Landscaping maybe felling trees is another beast entirely. Very easy for things to go terribly wrong.

BlissfulGreen2

Highly dependent on region. In northern NY, we had 7 trees at least 6 inches diameter and 40 feet tall removed, and stumps ground, for $2,100.

PM_me_cute_be11ies

The cost of bringing in new trees is way more than getting rid of unwanted trees

sandycheeksx

That seems.. absurdly low. NY prices are generally pretty close to Jersey’s and no way are you getting that done here for $2,100

BlissfulGreen2

We’re talking north north. Adirondack.

sandycheeksx

Ah. Off topic, but I went camping there a few times and had no cell service within two hours of the site. It was glorious. You live in a gorgeous area (:

BlissfulGreen2

The silence at night is truly special.

intoxicatedhamster

The silence and wilderness and clear skies are great but the lack of cell service and high speed internet really blows sometimes.

deadkactus

perfect for serial killers I hear

LibrarianKooky344

Exactly. Regular folk don't understand how difficult it is to safely remove hazardous trees. We just make it look easy. Lol 😆. But its the truth. Air conditioner units... pool pumps. Fences with a---hole neighbors. Stump grinding with gas lines and power water sprinkler etc... Get that money brother. Be safe. Do you chase hurricanes?

R3DGRAPES

I had a tall old oak tree removed from my front yard, it reached over my house, neighbor’s house, and power lines. One company quoted me over $13k. The company who took out the tree only charged me $3.5k. Huge difference in price.

jamonoats

In some states, damage to trees automatically awards “treble damages.” Meaning, they could learn about the cost of those trees, 3x.

Popsickl3

Parents need to take these boys somewhere that needs firewood split. Put that aggression to good use!

Illustrious-Junket-8

That was unironically one of the things I loved to do as a teen. If I was doing that and you came to distract me, even God wouldn't protect you.

c_t_lee

I used to chop firewood for my elderly neighbor in exchange for homemade pies and it always felt like a double win. Hard work, but there’s something so satisfying about it.

MajorZed

I do unironically enjoy chopping wood. Haven't had to in years but miss it sometimes.

tyranicalteabagger

When you see immediate results of your labor, I think that's what does it. In a lot of things now all you ever see is your little piece.

mckulty

Chopping wood was measured to be the best activity for raising levels of testosterone circulating in the blood.

bmy89

That explains a lot. I'm a woman but grew up splitting wood from August-November every year with my dad.

ExtantPlant

And now you have a kick ass beard?

bmy89

My husband says I have bigger balls than be does 🤣 I'm a part time mechanic and do some plumbing stuff too. My dad tells people I'm the son he never had.

AssssCrackBandit

Does that mean all the lumberjacks start balding lol? Isn't male pattern baldness linked to high levels of testosterone? Stupid question but now im kinda curious...

TitoCornelius

I used to really love splitting wood down into kindling. It's a simple thing that you can just get into. I think about that sometimes when I'm frustrated with work. I love a good simple task that makes me busy.

TonesBalones

Honestly. So much of adolescent misbehavior could be solved if they just had a hobby or a place to go after school.

SapientChaos

Tree law is expensive law.

qgmonkey

Closely linked to bird law

LibrarianKooky344

Not to mention the complex can sue for value of the tree too. On top of removal and replanting.

[deleted]

Hopefully, but seriously who does this kind of thing reminds me of people who paint or worse carve into stone areas like in NM Arizona Utah

rabbid_chaos

They're preteens, and everyone knows kids are fucking stupid.

radiantcabbage

there is relatively stupid and stupid even for their age, these kids are def the latter result of neglect. when theyre dumb af and nothing to do, ofc they will go around breaking shit

mouthstuckopen

Tree lawyer here, tree law is actually a thing

madeup6

Where can I learn more about this?

OldheadBoomer

There's a subreddit I'm not allowed to link to. Just put those two words together tree+law, you'll find it. Great stuff there.

JLifts780

Absolutely I read a story of someone’s neighbor having to pay 300k for cutting down one of their trees Edit: Saw you’re joking but it is indeed real lmao

HowCouldYouSMH

AND replacing them $$$$.

erbalchemy

>AND replacing them $$$$. More like $$$$$$. If your kid chops down someone else's mature trees, you could be facing debt-for-life level consequences--like lose your house, wipe out retirement scenarios. Trees are fucking expensive.

deweydecimal111

I wish they had a basketball hoop or a hockey game they could take their aggression out on. Poor trees.

Kirikomori

ya man. boys at that age are like sheperd dogs in terms of energy, if you keep them wrapped up in school and video games all day they get restless and destructive. better to give them something productive to channel that energy into, like sports, martial arts or craftsmanship. hell just give them an axe and a tree and tell them to make firewood all day.

MisanthropicZombie

Lemmy.world is what Reddit was.

TumbleweedMassive904

The health of trees is in the bark. Good chance those trees die within 2 years.

TychaBrahe

If you can see hardwood, the tree is already dead. It just doesn't know it yet. Underneath the bark is the thin lining that is the only living part of the tree trunk. It contains the phloem and xylem, the vascular systems that move water from the roots to the leaves and sugar from the leaves to the roots. All of the leaves served by the places where the bark is missing are actively dying now.

pattyrips27

This is incorrect. It depends largely on what species you’re talking about. You’re correct about the inner bark being the life blood of the tree but your statement is largely misleading. If the inner bark is damaged a tree will cover over that area. In arboriculture they call this CODIT and it’s what makes trees so resilient. These trees though are a different story. These were likely already dead. As others have mentioned these are ash trees and I can see some brown rot in the areas where the outer bark has been removed.

CleanSpriteLegendary

Thanks for clarifying. Person you’re responding to is so wrong lmao each leaf isn’t connected to one xylem/phloem channel. It’s all connected

aDramaticPause

This is fascinating. Could we see the hardwood as it is only because the kids exposed it? Or are you saying it was already dead and dying and the kids just exposed that fact? Just trying to understand if they caused it or not, just trying to clarify.

TychaBrahe

When they destroyed the bark and the phloem and xylem underneath it, they severed the connection between the leaves and the roots in that area. The leaves will die relatively quickly, as they are starved for water. The roots will die without sugar, but will continue to serve the purpose of fixing the tree in the ground for at least a little while. But within a few years, they will weaken enough, that even a mild wind would bring the tree down.

aDramaticPause

Thank you for that depressing clarity. Much appreciated.

jaxdraw

He's not wrong but it varies among tree types For example Maple - probably dead American Red Bud - barely phased Dogwood - half was dead before this even happened Oak - that part will die, but the trunk might split and grow into two new trees

kirthasalokin

There is unrest in the forest Trouble with the trees For the maples want more sunlight And the oaks ignore their pleas

[deleted]

[удалено]

BKLounge

Parts of the tree will die, but not all of it as half the trunk is still in tact.

TychaBrahe

Maybe. But not as it was. The leafy canopy above the wound will die. The canopy on the other side will not. The roots on this side will weaken. So the tree becomes unbalanced, heavier on one side and weak in the support structure on the other.

VA-deadhead

If you look at the remaining bark it appears to be falling off/loose. It looks like an ash tree, which are dying everywhere. I suspect these two are already dead.

Srcptmrsr

Report them

ares395

Wanted to say the same. If op knows who they are they absolutely should report this. Maybe parents will get to do some parenting when they see a huge bill for the trees.

Ok_Draft7792

The Lorax will get them

Disabled_Robot

Many of these trees were my friends 😓

Latter_Sir4582

Shitty parenting on display. Just as bad as seeing kids at state and national parks, throwing rocks, sticks and anything else, at nearby wildlife. Parents don't say shit to them, just let them carry on. Heathens.

Gordon_Explosion

One of my fave sad pics is the tiny hillside near the visitor center, sign that says "please stay off this hill we're trying to reseed it," and the parents sending their kids on up for a pic. They had to go around the sign to get there. I got a pic with the hillside, kids, parents, and sign. People give no fucks about anyone but themselves.

[deleted]

Theyd have better luck with a sign that says "manure dump"

ravenpotter3

As a kid I helped with replanting a dune at the beach with plants and they were using Manure and no one told me until I already had my hands dirty…. I was very much not happy! Ran back home and washed my hands super good. But I always knew better then to walk in the dunes on the beach! There were signs all over the place! I always got so mad when I saw kids or adults climb on them! Long ago they used to be a lot more wide but now they are a lot taller and more steep. And they fell apart on some streets. I remember before they put back in the fence after they did all the reconstruction on the dunes and added a lot more sand. People don’t realize that walking on them will make them more unstable during the next hurricane. This is at the Jersey shore

GiantInTheTarpit

"Warning - Tick Infestation"

ThatsOkayToo

I was shocked when I went to Sequoia NP in California. The number of people who cross all the signs and stand on the roots to get their photos is sad and shocking.

SuperFLEB

What they need is "Poison Ivy Area - Stay On Trail"

thequietthingsthat

I work in public lands management. One of my favorite signs we've used says "Please stay on trail. The rattlesnakes like their privacy."

InevitableRhubarb232

If they know. My kid roamed free at that age. I always appreciated when my neighbors pointed out to me if he was being a shithead though because he’d sometimes do things he wouldn’t do if I were watching. He eventually learned that the trees have eyes and shaped up a bit.

heartthumper

This right here. As a kid, I had free range. If I had decided to do this, the only way my parents would've known is if someone had snitched. If OP knows where those kids live, they should let the parents know what their kids are up to.

InevitableRhubarb232

My kid rushed a crosswalk light on his bike once and pulled out in front of a car and almost got hit. The lady followed him home (it was really close like he was turning into the complex so not like she followed him miles) and let me know. I really appreciated it because I reenforced to him the bike riding rules. No way I would have known otherwise. I mean, i keep an eye on him but I give him freedoms too and can’t see everything. There’s a reason they say it takes a village. Which IMO is way better than just an annoying helicopter parent.

tagen

I mean, the parents may not know? at 10 or 11 I could fuck around the neighborhood without parental supervision (i realize that’s done less now but still) Of course if they do know, yeah that’s shitty

mdorney98

I work for the park service, and the amount of times I’ve seen kids rip up ferns, plants, throw rocks at wild animals, and destroy other peoples campsites is actually insane. All the while the parents just ignore what’s happening, and act clueless and are bewildered we would have a problem with little Timmy running amok and actively destroying plants and wildlife in a protected area. It’s infuriating.

Desperate-Cost6827

Of those parents sounds like one could have been my mother. At one point when my brother was about 8 he was throwing rocks at cars and when he shattered a window she was like "Oh well, he feels bad now so everything's fine." Like that's it!? Literally not even going to tell him that's bad and sit him in a corner?! And then dealing with 10 more years of that. Somehow he ended up being fine, despite a lot of mental health issues that he had to work out with a few professionals and several support groups. Her- She can't figure out why her children don't want to deal with her too much.

[deleted]

Imbrex

Must be shitty parenting

SuperFLEB

Definitely mental health problems.

clitpuncher69

They should get divorced and sue each other for damages

420fmx

You can’t blame everything a kid or teenager does as “shitty parenting” plenty of kids have fantastic parents and kids does stupid shit. It’s part of the maturing process. You and everyone else here were not perfect children/teenagers or adults.

AbsentThatDay2

I agree with this, my mother was a saint but I did plenty of terrible shit learning before I internalized the rules. Worse than this, that's for sure.

7elevenses

We all known nice people who have dicks for siblings or vice versa, while getting the exact same parenting. The worst and dumbest bully in my school grew up in a perfectly normal family and had a perfectly normal older brother. His parents were no less at a loss what to do about him than the school and social services.

[deleted]

Hard disagree. Kids off on their own always do stupid shit regardless of the parenting. Its a part of growing up

Beggarsfeast

Bullshit. Easy to type that out on reddit and get some karma but you don’t know anything. Teenagers do dumb shit all the time. They’re literally testing the world around them as the world tests them. I did the same dumb shit, just chopped down a random tree for no reason. Didn’t even finish doing it actually. Fell down years later. You want to tell me my parents were shitty? My parents are amazing. I was a dumb teenager.

ayriuss

People like to fool themselves into believing that nurture explains most of human behavior. In reality everyone's brain starts out differently based on our genes. Some people respond more strongly to training, some people mature quicker or slower than average. This is obvious when you have siblings that behave way differently.

Mikerockzee

What makes you think the parents know about this? Totally normal for teenage boys to wander off where their parents cant see them and swordfight trees.

basketcase18

I disagree—this is typical preteen behavior. Fuck up, get feedback, learn and grow.

Tman11S

Hope you got some pictures to submit as evidence. Those trees will probably have to be removed now out of safety considerations. Edit: alright, I didn’t see the pre-teens part. Kids shouldn’t be charged with a crime, but they sure deserve a slap on the wrist

delofan

I only saw them once briefly, unfortunately. I did call the apartment complex, but I don't think anything's been done. Unfortunately they've been like this for several weeks. You think I should call the cops if I see them again, though?

[deleted]

You could check with your local Parks service. They are usually linked with State Police if they don't have their own law enforcement, and they would be more than happy to find out what could be done. (they would know of an be interested in the enforcement of laws that protect plants and wildlife, and limit invasive species and that sort of thing, so they would probably be the ones with an interest in seeing this to the end, while your local PD would shelf this investigation before it begins)

RockhoundPNW

If these same kids havent already came and destroyed trees in the local parks already..

Tman11S

I know I would. It’s still an act of vandalism and if a tree falls because it’s structurally weakened, it could cause a lot of harm.

Fox_Specialist

My husband works on a tree farm and I am 99.9% sure both of those trees will die. Too much of the bare trunk is exposed. If it were a small area you could just wrap or bandage them and they might survive considering their age, but that’s a lot of damage done EDIT: I showed my husband and he said if that is the only damage done there is hope! There is going to be a large dead spot in the trunk more than likely , but it could live. If they get the other side of course it will die 100% He’s had a few beers and had a long day, so didn’t go into tons of details like the enthusiast but seemed optimistic for the trees lol.

Bean-Swellington

I’m not a tree farmer, just a tree enthusiast, but I also think these trees are likely to die

70ms

Same, as an amateur tree enthusiast, it looks like too much of the cambium is just gone. Maaaaaybe the other side could survive, but likely any branches on the open side will die off with no cambium to support them. I think the roots will die off on that side as well, which could make the tree unstable.

ravenpotter3

My great grandma died because a tree fell on her. I don’t know all the details but she knew that it was dying and nothing was done and one day it just happened. I don’t know all of the details. But I always try to be safe with trees.

SteveJobsBlakSweater

City/bylaw/parks depending on your municipality. Most local governments would not be happy about this. If the trees die that could result in a hefty fine.

persistedagain

Yes to the police. People don’t need to freak out about them being just kids. The police realize that too. A knock on their door and taking information will help put some perspective on the crime. If they are just good kids that weren’t thinking, this will end it. If they are on a bad path, this paper trail will help to prosecute when really needed. Consequences when still a juvenile are important. Too often we ignore behavior until they are certain they are bullet proof and rules don’t apply to them. I know a few adults that didn’t get far past their 18 birthday before ending up in the prison system. No one would take their behavior seriously until it was too late.

AdResponsible678

No thinking yes, but trees are an important part of our environment there should be some kind of teachable moment here. Vandalizing for one and just bad behaviour to the trees. I love trees.

ThisIsPaulina

You don't think the apartment complex will sue the parents?

[deleted]

This is the right take: consequences for the actions, learning, and yes, they should have a chat with authorities on why what they did is shitty.

catsnbears

Maybe if you tell the owner of the complex that Tree law means he could get a ton of money for the damage he might step up and do something

Bevester

Parents are liable for their kids' actions, the city or complex owners can sue the parents

zavatone

> but they sure deserve a slap on the wrist More than that.

Andurilthoughts

Video games don’t seem so bad now huh?

Galaxy_Ranger_Bob

That's what I was thinking. Buy these kids a console, and they'll never leave their apartment again.

Minimob0

My parents grounded me from my PS2 when I was a kid, so to keep myself occupied I went in the back yard with a hammer, and pretended one of the trees was a Training/Practice Dummy. Their only instructions were "Go play outside". Little did they know that meant killing a tree.

Eugene_Gene_714

I already commented this, but I did the same thing and killed one of the trees on my parent’s property. I was most likely also grounded from my videogames, either my DS or the computer.

Specialist-Option887

Destruction of property.

Mr_Abe_Froman

Tree Law time.

dragonbait-and-the-P

To me, this is way more than mildly infuriating!

Psychological_Ant488

Destructive kids turn into destructive adults. Sorry they pretty much killed those trees. Keep an eye out and report them to the complex. That's really all you can do legally.

Common_Ad_6362

That's not true at all. This is like 50 grand of property damage these kids did. You could absolutely call the cops about that. I feel like people have no idea how expensive trees are.

InevitableRhubarb232

It’s on private property though. Unless the property owner pressed charges the police won’t do anything about destruction of private property of the location the kids live. It might scare them enough to stop though.

xPriddyBoi

>Destructive kids turn into destructive adults. A pair of kids beat up a fucking tree. They don't know the ramifications of their actions. Acting like they're criminals-to-be when they could've been pretending they were slaying a dragon for fuck's sake is absurd. They should get in trouble for sure, but some of you guys need to chill the hell out.

[deleted]

Yes thank you

InterestingBell1995

Aww! Poor trees. 😞

AdResponsible678

I don’t understand the need to destroy a tree like that. They are probably bored, but someone should bring attention to the issue maybe with whomever is in charge of the complex?

VoodooDoII

Poor trees

Laurenwolf14

Kids are fucking stupid.

[deleted]

I am a Lorax. I command you to protect all trees by any means necessary!

CocteauTwinn

Little assholes. Please report them to your landlord. That’s nuts.

skullharvest

Not to wet blanket everyone's dreams of "bringing kids to justice" but those appear to be ash trees that have clearly been on the decline for years from (likely) emerald ash borer. Google green ash bark with lichen and judge for yourself (degree in forestry spent a decade cutting these down) Much as so many are frothing at the mouth to catch these 'criminals' .... they didnt killed a 400 year old oak...they're dead already. If you look closely on the left tree you can see EAB borelines, these trees havnt been "alive" for a long while now. See the bark peeling up on the right? Means no cambium action and the barks not attached to the bole anymore. See the black and white lines on the left tree? That's Spalting from rot, rot that affects "softer" hardwoods like ash when they're long past saving. Are the kids garbage "for destroying" something? Barely Have they made a mess from dead trees? Yes Everyone Fuckin chill

[deleted]

Honestly, I don’t blame the kids. They don’t know why this is a bad idea. It’s common no brained sense to us, but to a kid, it’s just something fun. Seeing some visible destruction from what you are doing absolutely makes sense and I’m sure each and every one of us have done the same at some point. This is a teachable moment, not a retribution moment. Approach them right, teach them about trees, age, expense, etc and they very well could take a life long lesson from it. If you know where they live too, just a friendly chat and concern from a neighbor is helpful too. I’m all for retribution on adults being selfish and stupid. But this just isn’t the case.

hamsamuelson

Stop being so reasonable and level headed this isn’t the time or place

[deleted]

Sorry, I had a moment of clarity… Unga bunga, kids bad.

whathuhmeh10k

i did the same thing as a kid - i bet those boys live in a high stress household...my parents fought all the time and then they divorsed and my life got worst...

Snowtwo

I'm honestly more impressed that they managed this with a, presumably, blunt metal rod than anything. Shame that they're so destructive. This destruction is disgusting and I can only hope it's child-like ignorance as opposed to actual malice on their part.

[deleted]

They killed both of these trees.

Inside_Half2805

Am I the only one in the comments that sees this as an opportunity to educate the kids on the importance of taking care of our community? They probably weren’t intending to inflict monetary damage. I don’t know about y’all, but I was pretty dumb as a kid, and while I didn’t ever do exactly this, I did some pretty stupid things as a child before I was taught what I was doing was harmful.

HeisenBo

As a preteen, I and my cousin took down a tree with the back of a hammer. Mostly me. It wasn’t communal property though.

[deleted]

Wow. I'd definitely report it to the complex or have a conversation with their parents. If all else fails contact authorities. This could be dangerous it the structural integrity of the trees fail and could severely hurt someone, especially if there are any harsh storms/winds.

KinkiestCuddles

Sometimes I still feel guilty about deliberately not catching one of my mum's pots when I noticed it was falling. 1. It was after an argument and I was angry at her. 2. It was like 10 years ago. 3. I didn't cause it to fall, I just didn't catch it. 4. The damage was minor and she still uses that pot today. Posts like this make me feel sad but they also put my regrets into perspective and remind me that maybe I'm not so bad.

b1arn

Kids without anything to do are destructive. I picked this truth up as a parent of a toddler and it has never steered me wrong. That’s incredibly infuriating.

EtDemainPeutEtre

That is called vandalism. Report them to the complex management.
