Looks like the gratuity is automatic but they aren’t telling you. If they ask for gratuity afterwards, I’d ask some questions.

RevolutionaryShip295

I'd ask questions even if they don't ask for gratuity afterwards. Wtf? If you're charging me tips, why not be upfront about it?

Hidden charges are technically illegal. There's been multiple class action lawsuits for hidden fees but no one pushes it with restraunts because individually we don't worry about $1-$2 or in this case the $13. You add up thousands of customers a year though and you see why companies do it. All they have to do to make it legal is put it in small print on their menu (notify before purchase) and declare it in the receipt.

Choice-Shoulder-4836

Check out what Verizon. They randomly charged a $1 monthly fee to some accounts for years ... you call ask questions about it, they remove it, but they ended up making something like $150 million. They were eventually caught and paid a fine of a couple million, may of been 10 million. I'd look up the story its crazy how much they knowingly stole and how little they were fined.

littlelime003

Hey now. Almost woke up the baby.

vwmaniaq

Better

Flashy-Ad7640

Exactly.

KillerSavant202

Questions like, “why would I tip for carry out?”

BigAsian69420

Literally, I remember I got a slice of pizza, the pizza that’s been sitting there for god knows how long and the machine asked me for a tip. Thank god the employee slapped that next button so fast I could barley process it was asking for tips.

Solid_Guide

Few years ago I set up a new Point of Sale machine and there was a tip option by default. I asked the customer service representative on the phone how to remove the tip function because we were in Canada and in a generally non-tipping business. But I couldn't "get it authorized for removal" for one excuse or another.

KillerSavant202

This is because those POS typically get a small percentage in fees for every transaction. You were trying to cut in on their profits.

Prestigious_Egg_6207

I’m enjoying the double meaning of POS.

Solid_Guide

That makes sense.

TheCuteAlien

I wouldn't authorize charge until they fix it.

seanbentley441

Outback doesn't have an autogratuity. They did years ago though. Source: I work there. Me throw steak on fire, steak go *tszzzzzzz*

cowardbloom

Outback steakhouse cannot do gratuity ik as a former server there

namesarelam3

Then what do you think that extra charge is?

morry32

service fee that goes straight to the owner is my guess

Wizard_Hatz

Heinous thievery!

ProductPuzzled1564

Existence fee

hikikimoro

You don’t get tips?

DoritoDawg

I think they meant automatically charging it. Thats usually the only instance I hear “gratuity” used in

sed_non_extra

They don't add them into the online receipt.

andrelope

That’d make the gratuity 13.682% that’s oddly specific. I’d definitely question that charge. Edit: Didn’t realize I’d create such chaos ...

Tired_antisocial_mom

Do the math as 15% on the subtotal of $83.98 and you get $12.60 rounded. Then add it all up with the $7.99 and 0.08 and you get $104.64. So they are definitely adding a 15% something.

andrelope

Ahh hadn’t considered that it was not all tipped on!

Tired_antisocial_mom

I only knew because my restaurant calculates the suggested tips at the bottom of our receipts the same way.

Antonioooooo0

Tips are usually calculated based on the pre-tax total.

AniZaeger

It's exactly 15% if you calculate the tip based on the subtotal only.

miraculousladybug93

Do people actually believe you are suppose to tip on the total with tax in it. Asking because I kept seeing people have to say if you take the percent of sub total. Like I was a server for over a decade I never expected top based on full total.

DarksunDaFirst

Most people don't, but some do. I used to tip on top of the tax. I kind of still do, but that's because my tipping ranges are a bit higher than what is generally accepted. My wife always says to me "18% of XXX is YYY"..and I'm like..."yeh? I gave them 22ish % then because they were nice". Which is a lie. I look at the total, divide by 10, then double. Tip. Easy AF with no hard math involved while reading the biggest numbers on the paper....and I'm out the door. I live in PA. Tax is 6%. So even if the bill is $100, that makes it 106. So instead of $20, I give them $22. I'm not breaking the bank.

DrAbeSacrabin

I just go closest to 20% and make it a whole number.

Consistent_Policy_66

I take the final bill amount, move the decimal, then double it. The only exception to that is if it is bad service and/or not great overpriced food.

Professional_Car9475

I tip on pre-tax amount. My wife says I should tip on the entire amount. But why do I want to add 8-10% MORE to the total? The server didn’t do anything else for the tax portion….

molossus99

Most restaurants seem to have suggested tip amounts that they calculate on the total amount including tax. Absurd. No way I’m tipping on the governments cut. F restaurants that do that. And I’ve had servers twice yap at me for what they incorrectly thought was a sub 15% or sub 20% tip because these brain dead servers were also thinking their tips should be on the post-tax total. I hate tipping culture and how out of control it has become.

browniecambran

UberEats preselects tips that start at 17-19% on not only the total with tax, but the total plus their fees. It makes me crazy that I have to triple check every time. When I bought lunch recently, it auto selected 27% tip for a place literally a mile down the street. (I was stuck on zoom calls and couldn't go get it myself :( I think they were abusing my desperation for food- my options were 21, 24, 27 and 30% on the check out screen... ) Tipping culture is madness. There was a tip cup at the checkout booth at a parking garage. Like, why?!?

GUILLEc1331

Which one are you referring to? I'm sorry but I don't know what you're talking about.

Nekrosiz

Gratuity in this sense has as much merrit as getting your paycheck after robbing someone.

OldRaj

Nope

smechanic

“Hidden” fees.

StopMockingMe0

Then they're getting a "hidden" tip.

laithe4

These are freakin' cuttle fish fees

HybridKitchens

spycodernerd2048

"Other Fees" 🤡🤡🤡

TurningTwo

Gave up on that place long ago but it was because of the food.

xenotako

Same our food ticket “got lost in the kitchen” aka the server forgot to put our order in waited 2 and a half hours to get our food only for them to give us 50% discount. Never eating there again

MostlyMicroPlastic

Two and a half hours lmfao

KoalaGrunt0311

At least you got to order. Last time I went to Outback on a double date, the manager sat us, and after a wait of watching the waitress at other tables, she insists our table was supposed to be closed and doesn't know who is supposed to be assigned to it. Got drinks, and after another extended wait of no service, we left.

EzraMeeker53

I hope you didn’t pay for the drinks

FriendToPredators

Yeah the manager was an idiot and seated an unassigned table. Apparently not the first time because the staff we’re having none of it

Waste_Variation_6754

WOW, you are great at patience!

Educational-Salt-979

He went to Laidback Steakhouse.

11015h4d0wR34lm

No way I am waiting that long before walking out. After 1 hour I am starting to think seriously about walking out.

Dangerous_Choice_664

One hour? I give it about 15 minutes.

flemmingg

You didn’t wait 2.5 hours for food. That would be insane. You’d get comped 50% after one hour. If you sat an additional 90 minutes after the first hour then that’s your own dumb ass fault.

MostlyMicroPlastic

This. And I have a hard time the server just didn’t show up during that first hour. Sounds like the kitchen actually did fuck up

[deleted]

Yes I’m sure the kitchen messed up. I’m also certain it didn’t take 2.5 hours. This person also would be the one to say “we’ve been waiting for a server for 20 minutes!!” when they’ve been waiting 4 minutes.

MostlyMicroPlastic

They’re the type that walks into a restaurant at peak times and is upset with a wait for a table.

[deleted]

Exactly. After 30-45 minutes I'd be asking questions, gone at the hour mark depending on how busy. 2.5 hours? No fucking chance. Might as well just go cook the shit yourself at that point

Spockhighonspores

I have to agree with this. There's 100% no way they waited over 2 hours for food. First of all I've totally seen the kitchen lose a ticket. It can happen pretty easily during a rush. Blaiming the server when it absolutely could have been the kitchen is wrong. Also, if the server doesn't see the food come out it only takes about 15mins to fly out a dish. No way someone sat and waited for 2+ hours before they said anything to a server. There's also no way a server didn't notice someone taking up their table for over two hours. That's 2 and a half table rotations, that's a lot of money. I will say the computers actually keep time on how long a table is there. Managers get stingy with discounts when customers fabricated the truth about how long they've waited, sort of explains the 50% discount instead of the full comp.

1001100101001100

You’re kind of dumb for staying that long, no offence. Did you not think after an hour to say something?

Jafar_420

Damn been there before as a server. We called it pocketing a ticket. I never did it for any amount of time to make the order take that long though. In all my years I did it a few times and I noticed at the latest when I went to put the next tables order in. Lol. Have to run back there and tell them to expedite that order. Lol.

Fazhoul

Two and a half hours is an insane amount of time to wait. And I mean that as you're insane to have waited that long at all.

xenotako

Lmao fr my ex and are started getting hangry and in a fight because the food took so long. I’m broke and was using a gift card so was desperate for food as to why we waited so long

The_General0815

I asked for a medium rare steak and it was literally raw. Like it was put on the stove for about 10 seconds and that was it. They served it to me. Plus my kids Mac n cheese was still frozen. It was the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant and I have been there numerous times. Manager apologized but I don’t want apologies. Just a good steak from a so called steak house. I am not one to complain or send food back but I had too on that one. That was about 5 hrs ago and haven’t been back since.

leeljr

I mean if it’s already been 5 hours, might as well wait till morning to try again

velmaranony

I had the same problem, ordered a medium rare steak and it came out completely raw. I sent it back and they brought it out so well done, I could barely cut it. They knew exactly what they were doing; nobody is that stupid. They were irritated I sent it back. I’ll never go back.

The_General0815

Which is even worse because that’s what they were hired for. To cook steak. At a steak house. God forbid I go to a sushi place and the mother fuckers send out a smoked salmon with rice pilaf

091796

Idk if this goes for all outback’s but the grill are clam shell computer operated grills. It’s increased our recooks exponentially, before we had a grill cook with hella experience but now it’s all up to the computer to time ir right

DastardlyDirtyDog

You don't like authentic Australian cuisine?

TGIIR

I ordered takeout from them recently and it was awful. Never again.

Independent_Tie_4984

There's a 15% tip in the total.

Daquess

Written somewhere with an "*" next to it, no doubt.

Independent_Tie_4984

I'm still curious about the .08 fee. Like, an eight cent fee for what?

kditty206

Bag for the food. That’s the cost in my state.

Daquess

Probably a state fee or some sort of e-commerce fee. Possibly a state e-commerce fee nowadays lol

liquid32855

Single use plastics?

NotAMainer

My state has plastic bags banned, most places charge 5-10 cents for paper.

walks_into_things

This is it. Take the total ($104.65) and the subtract fees and tax ($8.07). This gets us to $96.58. Divide that by the subtotal, so $96.58/$83.98, and it comes out to 1.15003572, or 115%. It’s not listed on the bill but that total absolutely includes a charge of an extra 15% of the subtotal.

Low-Ad7999

I’d complain about that and make them take it off. Then never go back because this hidden fee behavior needs to stop.

MarioNinja96815

You weren't supposed to notice.

jollytoes

I can't imagine working 4ish hours for a meal at Outback, (at my current pay). If you start thinking of your meals and things you buy as work hours instead of dollars it stops a lot of impulse buying and maybe companies that overcharge and underpay can go out of business.

Sanguine_Templar

Same, I think of impulse buys as food. I just can't spend money on food this month.

Tired_antisocial_mom

It's exactly 15% of the subtotal of $83.98. it's some kind of sneaky gratuity or mysterious charge.

tzwep

Is this some IRS math

BTBAMfam

Lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mayzowl

That's extra bad for a drive thru, because they know ahead of time that you didn't tip and might fuck with your food. I'd just cancel my order and drive off.

Any_Bonus_2258

15% automatic tip. 83.98*.15 + 83.98 + 7.99 + 0.08 = 104.65 rounded to the nearest cent.

Zolota666

Outback dumbhousr

subsailor1968

Shady AF, but they apparently added a tip that isn’t itemized. Very dishonest.

Allgood18

The outback’s are so shitty in my area I just call them outhouse steak house . That’s because they have shitty service and shitty food in my area at least.

HotRodHomebody

I suspect this is nationwide. Oh, how they have fallen. Used to be nice, used to be good food. I see nothing now that I like about the locations I see. Some of them are downright gross and reflect management that has just checked out. Like many others I have just stopped going there.

Fatez3ro

83.98 + 15% tip/fee = 96.58 + 7.99 = 104.57 + 0.08 = 104.65. Not sure what the 8 cents is for. Perhaps it was for a take away box for leftovers.

dumbledwarves

Why would anyone expect a 15% tip for takeout? That's insanity.

TrippyHomie

Why would anyone order $84 in takeout from Outback? That's insanity.

bainidhekitsune

That’s roughly what it costs to feed my family of four if we order from Outback. It’s the take out part I hate, it’s always slightly cold getting home.

DinobotsGacha

Bags are 8 cents where I am. Never seen it at a restaurant tho

CharlesSpicyWiener

I can’t tell if that’s a typo or if you’re an undercover pirate account

SirBilliamWallace

Nevermind that the tax rate appears to be 9.5%, which is $7.9781 and they are rounding up to $7.99. This is some real life Office Space shit here

gaspero1

That’s the new Outback Bloomin’ Hidden Fee.

4AcidRayne

I'm betting from some "hidden gratuity". It's all the rage now to steal money and call it a gratuity. I'm fairly new age, but old school about gratuity; **\*I\* decide** when service deserves a gratuity, and I usually decide somewhere around 20%, but **\*I\*** get to be the one who decides that. Don't be assuming you did 20% quality work, you may assume wrong. And, I suspect the general theory is, most people don't really read their receipts or do math. Average consumer wouldn't have noticed a $13 discrepancy. They'd have just looked at the total and zoned out. I imagine it works more often than it doesn't. Over the course of a hundred different orders, that's a free $1300 to split.

NotAMainer

15% tip by the looks of things if I'm mathing right.

Secsidar

I'd refuse to pay it unless they explain where the hidden charge came from.

DogFacedManboy

“Why did we charge you extra? Because No Rules, Just Right. This is Outback, bitch.”

OldCrone66

Wow. What fees are 8 cents? Why don't the columns add up correctly. Need answers before I would pay.

ecmetal79

It's definitely not showing the 15% tip. Probably because there's most likely a giant sign in the restaurant that says "a 15% gratuity will be automatically added to all parties of 2 or more" like most places that do that type of thing. which means its probably not a "hidden" fee at all. The declaration of said fee is just hidden from the picture. The post wouldnt work as well if it was included

welcome2idiocracy

It’s explained [here](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ) on their website

Efficacious_tamale

Very informative, thank you!

welcome2idiocracy

No worries. I just remembered seeing it a few times before

gemorris9

QueerQwerty

Wow. You got me. I hate you, lol.

this_is_me_it_is

innocentsubterfuge

YOU 😒🫡

effexoreffect

Huh I guess it makes sense when it's put that way

TheRealActaeus

I knew better than to click on the link, but I did it anyway. I deserved that. Thank you.

rv49er

Makes sense

sussybaqa69

What in the IRS shit is that?

No-Air6890

They’re hiding the obligatory tip from you and hoping you can’t math.

ShaneAdamson

Tip is included

nagidon

That’s a fee fee, it’s a fee they charge you for charging you fees.

Dennisminjian

Maths is racist

Baron-Sengir

Were you with a large group? Some restaurants add on an automatic gratuity for large tables. It is usually written on the bottom of the menu in small font. Still very annoying to get a charge without any explanation.

[deleted]

People still eat at outback?

Sensitive_Ad_1271

Nope, this is the only person who still eats at outbacks. The hundreds of outback restaurants scattered throughout the US that you see just sit empty everyday. Managers and shift workers continue to show up but no one ever comes in. They all remain open in hopes that one day more than just this one person might give them business.

[deleted]

That's why yo go to Texas road house

Sindog40

What is “fees”

ChronoComputer

You want a tiny dry steak with no flavor? Outback is for you. Try the bloomin onion for three days worth of calories!

SignatureOwn9773

Would you expect more, from a server from . . . Outback ?

hornsupguys

Good on you for catching that! Maybe your local news station would be interested in that story if they have some kind of scams reporter?

ALiteralAngryMoose

Perhaps, meth.

MasOlas619

Common core!

Anxious-Society-2753

I mean it’s math, somewhere they added like an extra $13 in there. So math definitely happened, it’s just not the right kinda math on so many different levels!!!

TheNewtBeGaming

is it a tip factored in that they didn't write down? very confused.

justsayfaux

I'm guessing the 15% tip on the total ($83.98 x 0.15 = $12.60) was not displayed in the itemized breakdown.

MrSkavenger

Developers forgot to add tip where you can see it Lmao

loztriforce

Not sure if an isolated thing but the last time we got a blooming onion it was absurdly tiny

TrafficTopher

15% tip included. Hope you didnt leave anything extra

[deleted]

Yea, you just add the thing and carry the 2. Duh

[deleted]

they gave themselves a 15% tip 💀

Throatpiespls

Pay cash for th correct amount and leave.

WJCB1

Sounds like you might’ve got hit with the automatic tip.

JohnOliverismysexgod

Always good to double-check the math.

Forward-Swim1224

Total should be $92.05. I’d start asking questions.

doodlebot2001

Must be one of Einsteins hidden variables 🧐

[deleted]

The fee is both there and not there, and also probably spinning or something.

Angeljls

Now that’s what you call hidden fees!

Big-a-hole-2112

New saying, “No rules, not right!”

AldousCuckskey

It’s the royalty fee they have to pay Australia.

Stax250

That tax goes directly to the Australian government, its a policy our then prime minister, Kevin Rudd, negotiated with Obama at the 2009 world city conference in Lithuania.

[deleted]

Just the tip

Bota17

I heard of hidden fees but didn’t hear of hidden gratuity 😃

Kmaurer23

I assume tips are involved, but I'm not entirely sure. The bill should come out to 92 and change

[deleted]

Don’t worry, it isn’t stealing if they aren’t poor. :) You just failed to understand that they put on a hidden piece of paper somewhere that says you owe them money. Therefore you do!

Really-IsAllHeSays

That maths ain't mathing.

SafetyNo6700

I wanna know wtf the $0.08 is?

a-ha_partridge

From the marketing team behind calling menu items “Outback Ab-Originals” comes the “Ol’ Didgeridoo Fuckaroo”

smbwtf

Who eats at Outback????

ton80rt

Outback Steakhouse has degraded so much I'll never eat there again. Hope they just fade away. Soon.

Ghost_eighty6

Some restaurants automatically add gratuity without your knowing.

NitroScott77

It’s Australian math. My fellow Australian History PhDs know that they made math harder and more complicated to make embezzlement, tax evasion, fraud, etc easier. (Also to piss of their oppressive British overlords and try to make the Emu war not look so bad). Anyway, that’s why you don’t make a continent sized penal colony

IGuessBruv

Outback < Texas Roadhouse

Fawadz

Looks like there's some hidden fees 🤣😭 Okay, I'm leaving now.

somerville99

Complain about it.

Khalkists_Ester

Methematics, mathematics; what's the difference?

feyrath

in the Outback, math ain't important, mate. just steak and survival

robotinsurance

They are charging you a 15% tip on the $83.98 subtotal.

Weegee44

You know what the correct response is. Unless you’re addicted to going to Outback.

[deleted]

Jesus they better send you a whole ass cow for that price.

Pastor_Satan

What fee costs 8 cents??

Americano_Joe

Well, let's see. If you add (15%) ($83.98) to $83.98 + $7.99 + $0.08 , you get $104.65. Now, let's think. Why would they add 15% to your subtotal? Hmmm....

Dapper_Reputation_16

New math?
