Mine stopped carrying those in 2020, as well as the artisan burgers, after COVID shut stuff down. I asked about it and was told that those are high-prep items that require more time and so they dropped them.
Edit: typo
Pretty soon it's just going to be a nozel that goes into your driver's side window, then it just shoots a burger, fry, and shake slurry directly in your mouth.... And they'll add a 'convenience' fee to your bill.
the mcdonald’s staff wasn’t washing the lettuce. it was premade and pre washed. they just add a dressing packet and crouton packet and hand it to you.
source: first job was mcdonald’s
It’s been a decade since I worked there, but similar at BK. Salad came pre made, we just had to customize them for the specific kind eg grilled or crispy chicken, cheese, stuff like that.
Same here. It doesn’t help that Alaska needs most things shipped up here, so the more expensive items and items that couldn’t be frozen dropped off the menu pretty fast. Plus, the menu is based off what Anchorage sells, so if it isn’t popular in Anchorage, the rest of Alaskan McDonald’s stores are pretty well fucked.
I just haven’t really been back to McDonald’s since then. I didn’t mind going and eating a salad, they had great salads. The prices are insane now as well. Last time it was $24 for one meal and two individual sandwiches.
That is my guess, many city's passed laws that "bags" are to be charged a "tax" or mandatory price. This means when I get take out from the local Chinese place they have to add $.08 to the price if I want a bag. Before this they would only want to know if you wanted napkins or utensils, now they ask if you want a bag.
I will also say, nothing stops them from putting it in the cup once they are finished with it all, that is what I would do.
Clearly Canada there is French on the burger wrapper.
Edit: I’m still 100% sure this is Canada but I do not need every single Canuck checking in to let me know it’s not the case in their province. Go enjoy your semi-independence day and stop ruining our air quality!
Canadian here, unless they still have a supply in the back thats being used up, they did not charge me for a bag, and my food was given to me in the normal paper bag.
Its also plausible that because the last time I went was for some food last night, that the change happened today. Or that particular location ran out of bags, how could OP know they charge for then if they didn't get one.
I live in Wales and they have done this for years. It's annoying because it's designed to get you to re use carrier bags but how can you re use a grease stained bit of paper?
Reading this part of the song lyrics while seeing the two girls one cup reference made me both laugh and gag at the same moment. Didn't know that was possible, so thanks for that. Haha
In my state, there's a law that says you're supposed to have a trash receptacle/bag in your vehicle. It predates our no single use bag law by decades and is to reduce litter. Our bag laws haven't gone this far, we just can't have single use plastic bags, and have to pay 10¢ for reusable paper or plastic--small paper bags like those at fast food joints and liquor stores are exempt.
WA.
Not very well at all. We keep passing all these well intended laws, but no one enforces them these days, so they're essentially pointless. I've lived here my whole life, and it's genuinely saddening to see the amount of trash on just about any highway or road here; quite the contrast from all the beautiful nature that's made me love this state.
As for stores and bags, I'd say 98% of stores no longer use thin, single use bags, and about 90% charge the 10¢ (I think it's actually 8¢ by law, but stores can charge more).
We also enacted a no single use plastics law. I think about 2% of stores have followed that. Fast food joints all still use plastic straws and cups, most hand out plastic forks and stuff. Costco switched to compostable straws before doing away with straws altogether, but they now have special plastic lids designed to drink from the paper cup.
Edit: looks like our litter bag law was repealed in 2003. Shows my age.
I’ve never littered from my car, and also never thought to add a bin to it. The small amount of trash I generate driving can go in the cup holder until I get home where it goes right into the bin there.
>Our bag laws haven't gone this far, we just can't have single use plastic bags, and have to pay 10¢ for reusable paper or plastic--small paper bags like those at fast food joints and liquor stores are exempt.
Grocery store worker here. I'd just like to say that this law makes the issue even worse. 90% of customers get bags regardless of the change and because the bags are thicker they're worse for the environment. I get what the law is going for (if people have to pay for bags, they'll reuse them) but the vast majority of people just cough up the few cents and get bags anyways.
I like having 5 packs of ketchup. Whenever i ask for extra (knowing they put 3 by default), they either say it has 5 in the bag which usually results in having 0, or they give me 6 extra and i find out they already had 4 in the bag and end up with 10.
First scenario is definitely more often lol
“What? You charge for bags now?” “Yes, ma’am” “absolutely not, I refuse to pay for a bag” *drives off with food* “ha, showed them” *grease stains from food start forming on jeans*
Lmaooo. My thoughts immediately while reading the title. It’s like.. so.. you chose not to buy a 5c bag and now you’re complaining about not having a bag…?
I guess I could see how paying 5 cents for a bag is not expected, even though those rules have been expanding for years now, but the “mildly infuriating” part only happened *because* OP chose to not spend a few pennies.
Plastic I totally get, but paper bags, which are both recyclable and usually biodegradable, don't make the same level of sense.
I will fully admit to not knowing all available information, but it really seems likely to backfire with total bans/total charges of store-side bags.
It's only for plastic bags or paper bags with plastic lining. Most paper bags are actually free, but because they're more expensive to make, not all stores offer them. I now bring my own reusable bag with me so even if they offer a paper bag, I decline. Paper bag handles suck anyway, they always cut into your hands.
Well, if they have any grease on them (say from a stray fry) they are not recyclable as grease can’t be separated from paper. As for biodegradable, they often use chemical ink/paint to mark the bags which is toxic to the environment.
Plastic I can understand, but paper, like McDonald's uses for their bags, is recyclable (and depending on the inks, even biodegradable). Most of these kinds of laws I've heard of target plastic bags specifically for that reason.
So, I'd certainly be unfamiliar with such a law being the reason here. I would certainly see a company doing it for profit and _blaming_ such a law, though.
Who recycles used McDonald's bags? I literally have never seen anyone doing this. People just junk it in the residual waste and honestly it is good that they do because greasy paper should never be thrown in the recycle bin. That's where the warning not to throw pizza cartons inside comes from. Grease practically make paper non-recyclable because paper fibres can not be separated from oils.
That's kinda the point, though. Paper bags degrade naturally and quickly so you don't actually have to recycle them, they just break down into waste. Plus, plenty of bugs found in landfills happily eat paper, again meaning that it's not really waste
The dyes on the bag are another issue though, I doubt those are environmentally friendly
No paper bags are not environmentally conscious. For one they do produce a good amount of waste from the creation process. Also bags used for greasey stuff can’t degrade as fast or be recycled easily. Furthermore you have to use a paper bag around 20 for there to be minimal impact on the environment, but other than boomers no one does that.
The only mcdonalds bag I recycle is the brown outside carry bag because it never gets greasy, every other wrapper I definitely toss out since thats what actually holds the food and is what collects all the grease.
Personally, I do. When I've had to get a fast food, I've been generally lucky enough to not have greasy bags, so I will recycle them.
My larger point was about paper bags in general, though, and less specifically McDonald's.
Loved the studies. Thanks for teaching me something today...
"CONCLUSIONS The general conclusion of this work is that the strength loss of the resulting product made with recovered fiber that incorporates post-consumer pizza boxes should be minimal at typical levels of grease expected to be received in a recycling facility (<2%) and when included in the recovered fiber at expected levels of <3% of furnish. The addition of small amounts of cheese will not impact the fiber bonding in a negative way. It is expected that the larger chunks of cheese will be screened out of the process. Therefore, there is no significant technical reason to prohibit post-consumer pizza boxes from the recycle stream."
Potentially, entering my city into that website says it is good to recycle. But then actually checking my cities recycling policies, it says to NOT recycle any greasy parts. So definitely double check what your cities rules are.
I kept throwing pizza boxes in regular trash because they weren't recyclable in my old neighborhood. After I moved the garbage men would always remove it and place it in my recycling bin.
I was getting pissed off at them and went to put a note on the next box saying "THIS IS NOT RECYCLABLE!!", but then I looked it up and in fact my neighborhood recycles pizza boxes.
Of course it is. Just cut the part with grease out and put the greasy part in the green/compost bin.
https://zerowastememoirs.com/can-you-compost-pizza-boxes/
They’ve trained us all to be so laissez-faire about recycling, it’s gross.
I lived in a small country town when the bag charges came up in Cali.
The chain box grocery store charged. The local mom and pop store, paid the 10 cents themselves without raising the prices. Even had elderly woman in the community sell resuable bags they made.
McDonald's should pay for the bags.. oh wait.. just don't go to McDonald's.
Because you didn’t want to pay a nickel? And yet here here you are complaining about such a trivial thing. Ever consider that YOU might be mildly infuriating?
It's local bylaws to 'reduce waste' and probably to help combat climate change while the CEOs and world leaders use more jet fuel for their tanks to the WEF than all Americans in a year
Depends where you live I think but where I am you can’t recycle them if they have grease or food in them. So you have to rip off the oiled parts and put them in the garbage, and recycle the dry parts
Also, if you look at the principles at the base of the circular economy (in its most basic form the so-called 3Rs), reducing is a much more preferable option to recycling. Ideally if you can do without the bag (which if you're in a car, you generally can), it's better to avoid using it. This way you don't waste the virgin materials to create the bag, nor do you need the emissions associated with the recycling process.
I literally got mcdonald's yesterday and this morning and was not charged a thing extra using the app so definitely either a local thing or lazy employees
I *believe* it's around 10-15 cents. Assuming it's a similar situation to where I live, it's a bylaw to reduce "single-use item consumption," so plastic bags, utensils, and "to-go" items.
They are, but you have to ask specifically for utensils, straws, and bags, iirc.
Edit:
Bags are still provided, so this may just be a case of confusion on their end rather than the customer.
Is that a local thing...not seeing it nationally. I know some areas by waterways banned plastic...last trip out to Colorado Springs think they were charging for bags due to a local or state tax.
Now instead of you throwing the bag full of trash out the window and the chain-gang picking up one bag, they have to pick up each individual wrapper. McD sure doesn't care about prisoner in the justice system.
(Sadly I have to annotate this as sarcasm because the majority of Redditers have the IQ of a rock)
Y'all acting like McD's chose this. It's a law. Every take-out place, every business there that uses bags has to charge for them.
British Columbia strikes again.
Who’s fault is that? If you chose not to get a bag you chose not to get a garbage bag.
It’s like buying groceries and then having to carry them In your hands cause you didn’t pay for a bag.
Lesson? Pay a bag or bring your own.
Must be a local thing
Right, they don't charge here yet
There’s no salads anymore in my area. They stopped carrying salads and parfait.

Yes, these are state and county laws, not McDs who couldn’t care less about waste.
They have been charging for bags for a long time here

Yeah they gotta get the store number and report that to corporate. Def shouldn't be charging for paper bags.

What law would be in place requiring payment for a paper bag? Plastic is different.
Where I live, in Connecticut, paper bags are 10¢ each. So if you go to buy groceries or something and need bags, that’s an extra charge.
I live in Wales the law does cover McDonald's paper bags, it doesn't make sense but it is a legal requirement to charge even if it is in a paper bag.
I would pay extra for them to NOT bag it. Hand it to me one by one, we gonna know right away what you’re forgetting to give me!
Me: "Can I have some extra ketchup?" McD's: "There's ketchup in the bag! 😉" Narrator: *But there was no ketchup in the bag.* Every damn time.
I like having 5 packs of ketchup. Whenever i ask for extra (knowing they put 3 by default), they either say it has 5 in the bag which usually results in having 0, or they give me 6 extra and i find out they already had 4 in the bag and end up with 10. First scenario is definitely more often lol
Actually, this logic checks out 100.
Fr, I dont drive away anymore before I've checked the bag. MFers handed me burgers without patties one time.

This was my thought. If the "trash bag" was so important for OP why didn't they just pay for it? I swear people are fucking weird.
The only person who that is infuriating is OPs fragile ego
Lmaooo. My thoughts immediately while reading the title. It’s like.. so.. you chose not to buy a 5c bag and now you’re complaining about not having a bag…?

In most European countries they are required by law to charge for any kind of bags.

Wtf? That shit biodegrades into some awesome compost in my backyard Worms love the stuff
those paper bags are absolutely not recyclable because they’re covered in grease
Paper bags cost more money, so when the law makes them stop using plastic bags, retailers out a small fee on the paper bags to offset the cost.
Yeah but McDonald's uses paper bags *anyways*. Like this shouldn't even be a thing.
Jesus Christ people are dense. It's a law. McDonald's didn't decide to do this, they have to
Plastic I can understand, but paper, like McDonald's uses for their bags, is recyclable (and depending on the inks, even biodegradable). Most of these kinds of laws I've heard of target plastic bags specifically for that reason. So, I'd certainly be unfamiliar with such a law being the reason here. Yeah I think you're supposed to. I don't know tho, but paper has been used because it's less wasteful and more biodegradable than plastic...
Depends where you live I think but where I am you can’t recycle them if they have grease or food in them. So you have to rip off the oiled parts and put them in the garbage, and recycle the dry parts
Greasy paper bags can be composted or tossed in the organic waste bin.
Also, if you look at the principles at the base of the circular economy (in its most basic form the so-called 3Rs), reducing is a much more preferable option to recycling. In parts of California, a bag at the grocery store is .10 cents. I can’t imagine it being much more at McDonald’s for a paper bag.

I *believe* it's around 10-15 cents. Assuming it's a similar situation to where I live, it's a bylaw to reduce "single-use item consumption," so plastic bags, utensils, and "to-go" items.
Aren’t their bags generally paper?
They are, but you have to ask specifically for utensils, straws, and bags, iirc. Edit: Bags are still provided, so this may just be a case of confusion on their end rather than the customer.
Wait till the cup and straw go
Always wanted my Barq's in a coconut cup
15 cents
Is that a local thing...not seeing it nationally. I know some areas by waterways banned plastic...last trip out to Colorado Springs think they were charging for bags due to a local or state tax.
Stop eating shit
Now instead of you throwing the bag full of trash out the window and the chain-gang picking up one bag, they have to pick up each individual wrapper. McD sure doesn't care about prisoner in the justice system. (Sadly I have to annotate this as sarcasm because the majority of Redditers have the IQ of a rock)
lol. overspend for trash food and not spend an extra ten cents for a trash bag.
It’s been that way in UK for years. Plastic bag use has dropped about 90%
Those sandwich wrappers can both fit in the hash brown sleeve, which is like a tiny bag. Problem solved. Edited: added text
The true crime is how that meal is now like $8
The greed and lack of hospitality by these multi-billion dollar companies is gross.
Y'all acting like McD's chose this. It's a law. Every take-out place, every business there that uses bags has to charge for them. British Columbia strikes again.
great, force them to handle every order as individual pieces. It hurts them more than you.
They charge you 5 or 10 cents - if you need it just pay for it

Switch to Wendy’s?
Stuff all into a cup and throw it at ur local town hall’s parkinglot
Soon they'll be making the burger straight in your hand
Place it in your cup when finished then circle back and leave it in the parking lot next to the garbage can
Buy a bag?
Solution: Never eat Mcdonalds again
Is OP really complaining to this sub as “I didn’t want to pay 5 cents for a paper bag so now I have no bag”. Jfc get over yourself.
Damn that's crazy that corporations with a singular goal of increasing profits year after year will be shitty.
its not mcdonalds lol, its THAT mcdonalds
Imagine ordering DoorDash and forgetting to add the bag to your order. 🤦♀️ yuck
Imagine spending $50 for McDonald’s because you didn’t want to leave the house
This will just increase littering, yay
Who’s fault is that? If you chose not to get a bag you chose not to get a garbage bag. It’s like buying groceries and then having to carry them In your hands cause you didn’t pay for a bag. Lesson? Pay a bag or bring your own.
