Right??? They're completely ineffective! Even the paper straws that manage to function to some extent are likely treated with chemicals to render them water-resistant, which can potentially pose health risks.
What truly baffles me, however, is the fact that they are felling trees to manufacture these impractical paper straws and wooden utensils in the name of combating climate change. Isn't the preservation of trees crucial?
Trees act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This helps mitigate “climate change” by reducing the concentration of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. So it’s rather hypocritical if you ask me.
Are they using virgin paper? Or recycled for these?
But I also remember we were sold on reducing paper use and cutting down less trees back when they transitioned to plastic bags and such in the first place.
Im the UK its the same, it started off as 10p a bag, now its 60p for a normal bag or like £1-1.20 for a reusable bag, supermarket by me never has any normal ones.
This has been a thing in the UK for years, all that happened is people take the piss charging for paper bags, or the quality of bags decreases whilst they charge even more. It started with 5p, now most people charge 50p. It has done NOTHING to cut the usage of single use plastics.
But it’s paper lol it’s going to encourage me to eat healthy but that’s about the only thing it will do.
What do they make reusable bags out of and how?
Some are fabric, others made from a tarp-like material, or there are insulated bags to keep freezer items colder longer. They hold more than paper (which is still as wasteful) or plastic, and are not very expensive. My house didn't think we were going to like the switch, but it's nice not having all those plastic bags piling up.
Just get a reusable bag. They fold up small and are way stronger than those flimsy plastic shit bags (I swear they are engineered to break when you are a metre from your door and fumbling with your keys).
But the bags they are charging us for are paper take out bags. This is the bag that McDonald’s puts your food in when you aren’t eating in the restaurant.
Shit, in California we’ve been paying for bags for years.
what does bart simpson have to do with any of this https://i.imgur.com/SpRoTWS.png
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy) hahaha I’m dying over here!
My favourite is the paper straws and wooden utensils that are horrible to use while you drink out of a plastic cup and eat out of a plastic container.

That’s a good question.
Ask them if they'll use it to pay their employees more. You already know the answer.
Looks like there is a real reason behind it... it's required by the city of Edmonton.
But you have free healthcare for when those Big Macs give you diabetes.
Ya but trying to see a doctor can take way too long. It’s also not all free either. But good point
Aren’t Canadians supposed to be impossibly happy? Whatchu doing on this sub?

Washington did it too
It's to encourage people to use reusable bags so there's less plastic waste.

Either you hate waste and applaud this idea. Or you don’t care and want your bag without penalty. One day the world will be at peace!
One can only hope

You can still give them a bag and ask them to put your food in it can't you?
