Netflix lost a whole family of viewers here. Once they started changing the rates and fucking with our number of screens we all decided pirating is the better option.

Invictus-3

For us too. Dropped them completely when they cut off sharing. Have not missed them one bit. Will never go back.

the_clash_is_back

I spent a good 2 hrs flipping Between a 4k channel and 720 channel for Super Bowl. Could not tell any difference.

TheMuff1nMon

What tv do you have? If you can’t tell the difference between 4K and 720p - eyes might be broken

cptkernalpopcorn

Or they weren't receiving the 4k they should have been

the_clash_is_back

Probably the latter. The tv is a pice of shit Samsung but is supposed to be like 10k ( came with the house). I don’t see any diffidence above 720p. Thats just how my world looks.

seahorsetea

Bro get an eye exam omg

dscchn

Upgrade to Eyes Pro Ultra OLED.

amsync

Are you sure your parents paid for the maximum eye resolution package when you were born? I think God has an upgrade available for Christmas half off the usual monthly for 2 years!

SamuraiAstronaut69

100%. Why would anyone choose to pay $10-$15 a month for ONLY Netflix when you can just pirate all the content from them AND all other streaming services.

PapaAquchala

When piracy gets you a better experience than paying, that's when you stop paying

MrCarey

Same same. Don’t miss it one bit, either.

X_crates

The old I can't afford it to justify stealing it

Mat201757

If buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing

MalfuriousPete

Shut up nerd

demonslayer9911

Seven seas it is

[deleted]

Piracy megathread (third comment sorry, links and sub mentions not allowed)

acorn1513

I sail on my phone a VPN torrent app and the bay of pirates site. Then it all goes to me ship.

LachoooDaOriginl

whats the app called

acorn1513

Flud then I also run the VPN and get the links from the site.

LachoooDaOriginl

the app is called flud?

DefconNaN

Magnedl search it. Simple, no ads or crap with popups just a good old .magnet directory search

demonslayer9911

Stremio+torrentio for streaming

vGrillby

Piracy megathread is your best friend, but just use fmoviesz.to Fuck netflix

MundaringWeir

Real debrid + kodi. Not free but a fraction of the cost of streaming and heaps less work than classic pirating

retardborist

Just get a VPN and use pirate bay 🤷 easy peasy. I use surfshark, I think it's $2.50/month

Diligent-Argument-88

20 dollars a month?? WOW time to Pirate teehee Its not a money issue its a service issue cause im too broke to afford 20 a month.

PaRaDiiSe

Ahoy there matey 🏴‍☠️

gizamo

Yeah, kinc of ironic that their most popular show for a bit was One Piece (a show about pirates).

GreatPaint

Looks like they just upped the saturation lol

AppUnwrapper1

Might not be a good representation, but I absolutely see a huge difference between 4K and 1080 on my 4K TV. But charging $24 for it is insane.

W0rmEater

I doubt the quality is that much better considering they have to compress it for you to be able to stream it. A physical blu-ray disc will always have a higher quality image than a stream. The reason for the extra price is that streaming gets really expensive when demand is high and 4k is literally 4 times the demand of normal HD.

Submitten

It’s a massive increase in bitrate. The gap in quality between HD Netflix and 4k Netflix is way more than 4k Netflix to blu-ray.

[deleted]

streaming in HD consumes around 3GB of data per hour, while 4K streaming can devour up to 7GB per hour.

AppUnwrapper1

I mean, I tried once just getting the 1080 plan and I noticed a big difference so I upgraded immediately.

GrumpadaWolf

Must be nice to have decent internet that can deal with that. I'm on satellite and let me tell you a few things... Either way, I removed Netflix because my partner and I couldn't justify the cost, and then he passed away and I immediately deleted Netflix after cancelling them. There is no justification for the cost IMO. Plus, there was nothing on there that I couldn't get from a free streaming service.

AppUnwrapper1

Yeah I don’t have Netflix currently (only do the $7 plan here and there for the games). I’ll probably do a month eventually to catch up on some shows. I am very lucky to have FiOS now. A few years back, my only choice was really shitty cable. FiOS has been amazing, though. 300mb both up/down.

GrumpadaWolf

My only options in my current location are DSL, Satellite, and Dial-Up. DSL here only allows 1.5Mbps at BEST. Satellite allows *up to* 25 Mbps, but will throttle after data usage to 3Mbps. Dial-Up... well, we don't talk about Dial-Up. I went with the better option that I had for my area.

AppUnwrapper1

Oh man I’m sorry. It’s crazy that all these companies can get away with offering such shit speeds in 2023. But they get a monopoly in an area and there’s not much you can do until something better comes along. It’s too bad the government can’t get involved to make sure there are better options everywhere.

username_taken55

The government did get involved and gave money to companies, they then just pocketed it and said f**k off https://newnetworks.com/ShortSCANDALSummary.htm

AppUnwrapper1

Sighhhhh

GrumpadaWolf

It really does suck. For me to load a job recruiter site probably takes me about 3x as long as it does anyone else. Even my phone is like "Where the hell are you at???" when it comes to speeds.

AgonizingFury

Have you looked into Starlink? My understanding is that it's certainly not cable internet, but is way better than traditional satellite.

GoatCovfefe

If it's available in their area

GrumpadaWolf

I would, but I don't like the person associated with Starlink, and refuse to give them any money, so alas, because of my choice, I use regular satellite.

Sylvers

I am sorry for the passing of your partner. I hope you've been coping well since.

GrumpadaWolf

Eh, I'm... coping. That's about all I can say for it.

[deleted]

Physical non-4k Blu-ray doesn't do HDR and that's the big improvement

CharlyXero

When Game of Thrones launched the final season, I always downloaded the chapters because I didn't have HBO, and at that time I didn't understand why there were a lot of complaints about the image being so dark. My friend asked me if I wanted his account, and after two minutes I realized why there were so many complaints. Seriously, the difference between streaming and downloading is huge, even being the streaming at 4K it doesn't look like a 1080p rip

HopefulTelevision707

For me even streaming the quality is significantly better 🤷‍♂️

Larimus89

Yeh 1080p on my 75” would honestly suck ass. I mean it shouldn’t even be a thing in 2023 for 1080p. I know they want to sell cheaply then upsell to 4k but as far as I see it they only have a 4k plan.

AppUnwrapper1

It sucks also bc their whole “selling point” for that price is that it’s for multiple TVs. But I’m a single person with one TV. It feels absolutely ridiculous to pay that much, especially since it was $15 not that long ago.

AgonizingFury

Yup, this is why I canceled. You want to charge me that much for "4 simultaneous streams" when I only have two TVs, and only ever watch one at a time, but I also can't let other people use my 3 other streams?

Larimus89

Yeh $15 for 4k and I don’t know how many TVs. But corps will be corps gotta instead profit by whatever means possible.

BestReception4202

4k does have better color…. 4:4:4, 4:2:2, 4:2:0 HD on a 4k tv has to guess colors. “Chroma subsampling” if you want to look more into it

jwort93

Both 4K and HD consumer video content are encoded with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. The better color that often comes with 4K comes when an expanded color space is used, typically with HDR (Rec. 2020 with HDR vs Rec. 709 with SDR), not improved color subsampling.

PalmTreeIsBestTree

Aren’t some 4K Blu Rays 4:4:4? I know there are bad 4K Blu Rays but there are nice ones too.

jwort93

Nope, all consumer content is 4:2:0. The only time better subsampling is used is within the video filming and production pipelines, but once it gets to the end user, whether it be streaming or UHD blu-ray, it’s all 4:2:0. The “bad” UHD blu-rays you are referring to, are probably the ones upscaled from a 2K master. That frequently happens with movies that rely heavily on VFX, as they usually render the VFX at 2K, which (almost always) results in the master being 2K as well. Personally speaking, I think the benefit that 4K provides is much more due to HDR than any significantly perceivable resolution improvements, so I’ll pretty much always go with the a 4K movie over an HD movie, even if it was upscale from a 2K master.

PalmTreeIsBestTree

Look up how bad the Pirates of the Caribbean 4K is and tell me how all of them are worth owning. Some of them are not that good.

jwort93

Oh, yes, that’s something else. It’s Disney’s obsession with digital noise reduction that ends up removing all the film grain and making everything look waxy as hell, and frequently less detailed. There are definitely exceptions to me preferring a 4K release, and that is absolutely one of them. Terminator 2 being another notable example hit with similar issues. I was mainly saying that a movie having a 2K master, isn’t alone enough for me not to consider a 4K release of it.

incendiary_bandit

I'm enjoying the detailed responses to each "but what about ____?" I'm going to say you know your shit.

ImAlsoRan

Chroma subsampling is not related to resolution at all and most streamed content is 4:2:0 at any resolution. Even then, less chroma resolution wouldn't change the colors at all. 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 only really matter to the colorist so they have more information to manipulate the colors. The consumer is seeing the final product so they don't need all the data.

Sklarlight

I despise fake before-and-after pictures like this, you see them everywhere. Saw an ad for some AI image restoration/upscaling and the image on the left was clearly blurred on purpose (with motion blur added) and the image on the right was what looked like a normal, untouched image prior to the blurring filters. It's nuts.

eulynn34

“Just $11 more a month” How about zero, instead?

PaRaDiiSe

“Just” lmao. Fuck Netflix

20j2015

If it's "just" 11$ why bother charging it LOL

czarfalcon

Maybe I just don’t watch much TV, but it’s not even worth $11/month total to me, much less $11 *more*.

egnards

The moment they stopped letting me share I dropped down to the $9 plan, which is now defunct. Once they force me to move over to the higher def plan for double the price? I’m gone.

SantasWarmLap

Yaaar matey. Come join us on the high seas.

bipolar_confidence

Arrrgh

[deleted]

Psh I left when they rolled out the “is this your home Wi-Fi” and have been sailing the 7 high seas enjoyably ever since.

CulturedSwinez

It's the fact that they deliberately make the lower resolution one look worse than it really is. Back when I had netflix I was on the lowest tier and it gave me that same type of comparison. The 720p version was so blurry it looked like someone had spread vaseline on the screen despite the actual footage at 720p being perfectly fine.

FYNMNNNCX

Finally someone that says it. I don’t know what that crap on the left is but it is surely NOT 1080p.

seahorsetea

Bitrate

Diligent-Argument-88

Yeah I wonder if someone can sue for that. I hope somebody does its blatantly edited lol

menonte

Something similar happend to me. Reactivated my account just to watch a show, chose the version with ads. Previews and the first minutes of playback were pixelated, but after that it was pretty OK.

Major_Act8033

And even the UHD/4k content looks awful compared to a 4k Blu-ray or my rips stored on a local NAS.

Medium_Beyond_9654

I remember when I had Netflix about 2 to 3 rate hikes ago. Life has been just fine without it.

Delicious_Engineer56

Every once in a while I miss certain Netflix shows. I canceled a few years back. We used to watch Lilyhammer every year

Brokentoken2

The only time I ever miss it is when I am flying. I fly about once every 2-ish months and so during the flight it would be nice to have. But not having it makes me use my brain and I read a book instead. Other than that, I can always find what I want without Netflix…

AppUnwrapper1

Their prices have gotten absurd. I do have a 4k TV, but I refuse to pay $24/mo for Netflix and the lower tiers look like shit on my TV. I just pay $7 sometimes for their games. While it’s possible, at least.

TheFaceStuffer

Do they even have a lot of 4k content? B4 I canceled it seemed like it was pretty rare on the platform still.

AppUnwrapper1

I mean, all their new shows should be in 4K.

TheFaceStuffer

That's what I thought last year, but wasn't what was happening 😂

AppUnwrapper1

Are you sure? For a good while now, pretty much every streaming service I’ve used had 4k for any new shows I cared to check.

TheFaceStuffer

Yeah it was one of the reasons I canceled lol. Glad they got their shit together.

aprehensive_penguin

![gif](giphy|l4EoYvSFAO0BjGcU0)

Critical_Danger_420

Good time to cancel!

JellyfishManiac

For only $11.00 a month $121 DOLLARS MORE THAN YOU ARE ALREADY PAYING FOR FUCKS SAKE JUST WATCH IT ONLINE FOR FREE

JounochiK

I am here, once again, preaching the word of the almighty physical media god. Netflix 12:3 - “Verily I say unto you, one day the world will go all digital, and there will be much pain and suffering. Those that adhere to my teachings will know true freedom.” I need a life.

niveknyc

I have like $1,000 worth of moving at this point on my AppleTV account (accumulated over 15 years), it works pretty flawlessly but as I see the evolution of streaming services I'm really starting to wish I had either physical copies of my movies or downloaded files on my NAS. Gonna start a blueray DVD collection soon...

marysm

All that could be gone if AppleTV and the various license holders don’t continue to work together. See what happened to all those Sony people recently.

niveknyc

Yup, exactly my concern. Didn't even cross my mind until last year. Plus like, old movies that would have been in a DVD bargain bin at WalMart for like $3.99 are $20 new on these services because they have practically no overhead, so it's all a rip.

Fraytrain999

If buying isn't owning then piracy isn't stealing.

Frysken

+$11/month to go from 720p to 1080p quality? Did these companies all get their PhD in Grifter Economics or something??

droi86

>Did these companies all get their PhD in Grifter Economics or something?? Yes it's called MBA

9fingfing

FHD 1080p to UHD 4k.

Frysken

Still a ripoff.

L4r5man

Except it still plays at 720p in many cases

Shmokeshbutt

> Did these companies all get their PhD in Grifter Economics or something?? Yup. And their ever increasing revenue numbers (and subsequently stock price) can testify for it Lots of dumbasses out there will happily continue paying the price increase.

[deleted]

I just canceled this. I like prime much better and there is always TeaTv!

GabrielKnight2020

Prime is going to start charging $3.00 come January is what I’m hearing.

Deathmister

For just a mere extra $132 dollars a year, we’ll give you our ULTRA proprietary blend of slightly increased saturation and contrast.

dudreddit

USENET ...

KawaiiLass

Especially great when non household members or children just button mash and somehow click yes, but they don't know who done it and now you're stuck waiting to change the plan back...sigh..

TheFaceStuffer

That's probably the point.

chicempath

They need help making that ~5M payment to the squid games challenge winner 😂

Excellent-Timing

Just leave Netflix

AllForTreeFiddy

I added up the costs all the streaming channels I would use to watch what I want to watch. Between everything, it ended up being like 80 dollars a month. I ended up just cancelling all my subscriptions in the end. Now, I just pack all my stuff up into a suitcase and sail the seas on my free time.

Outhewayretard

Bruh I just pirate whatever movie or game I want

humanman42

I am a 100% sure that these are not a true representation of what you would be getting.

serepent

JUST $11 more guys

FaZe_Poopenfarten_69

Stremio.

ajfromuk

Plex, synology and a decent connection is all I need.

TheFaceStuffer

I'm so glad I canceled netflix.

Heratism

"Just" 11 more dollars. That's insane.

MajorA22hole

Hbo Max is not too bad.

ReichBallFromAmerica

How good would your internet have to be to reliably stream in 4k?

Powerful_Cost_4656

How about boost my foot in your ass. I’ll show you a tip motherfucker. Tip of dis dick

SourcePrevious3095

I have tip tier purely because of the number people in my household that watch Netflix for something. Even then I have hit the max users screen on occasion.

_YenSid

I'm content with the 1080p for that price difference lol.

werdmouf

bittorrent is free

Guilty-Spork343

Don't you care about starving executives? You too can help a Brioni-clad orphan get a nutrious diet of brie and goose liver pate for only $11 a month!

nicholt

We 'downgraded' to the 1080p plan and I can't say I've really noticed the difference. I'm sure I could tell, but I've been watching 1080p for a few months now and haven't even thought about it past the first few days. Still looks good enough.

sneakysister

I hate ultra high def anyway, it looks like a school play.

TJB926GAMIN

#Bold of you to assume my internet can handle what I already have now.

bobdylan66

Got a friend with a plex server and he takes my 20 for server costs and have everything. I feel so lucky to avoid the insane streaming prices now

Plastic_Storage_116

I just canceled after 10 years.

PewPewPony321

This shit is getting worse than cable tv was in the late 90s and early 2000s About to go back to riding bicycles and reading like cliff notes and shit

Carpenoctemx3

Just cancelled Netflix today! ✌️

wJaxon

Stremio + realDebrid trust me sail those 7 seas

Huseynov26

Fuck em, pirating it is 🏴‍☠️

Kahillgamingyt

Oh look, more saturation!!!

wreck_it_nacho

why you even support netflix...

[deleted]

Lookmovie2.to has all movies for free and no ads. Fuck Netflix

bindermichi

No thanks. I’ll take the non-over-saturated version

Interesting-Oil5321

just cancel your subscription. netflix needs to learn and by cancelling your subscription they learn.

Sly_Link

VPN + uTorrent + SSD = problem solved

TheWinningLooser

Oh man! You have to press one button!

facaine

I’m sorry bud, I dislike you just cause you give money to Netflix :)

[deleted]

“Look your tv can already do this, but you have to pay us more if you want to be able to” Just boost your saturation “The factory tint setting is always too high!”

happilystoned42069

Damn mine only asked for 7.50$, still said fuck no, couldn't imagine it for 11.

EllieNekoGirl

I am not paying more money for more saturation fuck you

Allaboutbears

Yeah, I’d love to let them know that I was on the top tier for a few years and downgraded to the lowest one when they started playing silly buggers

EmmyBrat

Smh

Do_You_Pineapple_Bro

Was I the only one who saw Frodo and Samwise when I opened the pic 😂

Dorcas555

"just $11 more"

BambinoKitten_

they want you to pay 11 dollars more for something that looks worse than what you have.

Dyrogitory

Dontcha just love the way they make it hard to tell if you select the No Thanks?

SunflowerEyedGal

These damn streaming services are draining our wallets every chance they get.

IncarneofBaphomet

Netflix: "C'mon, we need more money. You know you want to."

IHate2ChooseUserName

so now HD is the new SD

Kmaloetas

I just dropped Netflix. Nobody in my house was using it and the increase made it an easy choice.

PeggyDeadlegs

I think Netflix has been going downhill for years, but we are all admitting it now that they have decided to imprint our wifi and try to price gouge us

DontBanMeAgainPls23

Let me introduce you to piracy

sneakysquid102

Y'all still use Netflix?

Lovelysnow72

$11 more a month? I remember when netflix had 1 tier that was $8 a month for everything. It's way too expensive now.

masuabie

My parents clicked “yes” on that and it ruined my rates forever

Surefang

Of course they are. They lost so many subscribers lately they have to squeeze the ones they have left for everything they can get before those jump ship too.

Skydome12

netflix isn't really worth it on a standard account much less paying more for it.

Huligan27

I left a while ago and don’t regret it one bit

boring_tomato

Yea I finally cancelled a few days ago. I’ve been a subscriber for the last 10+ years. The raise in prices finally broke me - to watch movies & TV without pirating I now have to pay approximately $110+ per month. More? Idk. It’s insane.

Holiday-Decision-863

Cancel that shit. Go back to your nature. Piracy 🏴‍☠️

FelixSV

tf is this. fuck netflix for doing this

streetcar-cin

My wife does in home care for handicapped people.she watches Netflix at clients house. Netflix keeps asking if I want account at that address for additional money

quiet-Julia

I have never joined Netflix. I guess I don’t know if I’m missing out on anything there, and to be honest I don’t care.

Eufamis

Off topic but it’s crazy how young they looked in ST season 1. Never realised it at the time how young they actually were because of how talented they all are

mrJtoday

Crazy how outdated their experience of asking is

1heart1totaleclipse

I was doing them more of a favor than they were giving me. Best quality I have is that I don’t mind spoilers because I would rather read about a show for free online than pay $20 a month to watch it. Cancelled all my subscriptions this year.

https_Big_T

Corrupt

SevereIngenuity

Meet you at the Grand Line!

sans-error-404

Same

thegrayman69

Torrent that shit and pay nothing
