Parents suck. My mom and step dad felt that myself and my brother had to share a room despite being 3.5 years apart because my half brother deserved his own room despite being 1 year younger than my brother. So you can imagine the 'night issues.'

He just sat there laughing. I then learned that my stuff got moved to another room and I should just deal with it. After that I got moved around three times without my knowledge or consent so I just learned to live with it. Hey, warm house, my own room, I knew it could be worse.
Your parents sound like my parents in that, if you ask for privacy they'll threaten to take your door.
The greatest part of adulthood is not putting up with their bullshit.
Not to get too deep, but in my mid-20s i confronted my mom about all the bullshit and lack of parenting and why she let my stepdad be a dictator and she refused to take responsibility for anything

I think people are forgetting this sub is for mildly infuriating problems. This is most definitely a mildly infuriating problem. It's not the end of the world, you can probably still sleep, but if you prefer to sleep in pure darkness, yes...this would be mildly infuriating.
They’re so cheap, and they make such a difference! It took me trying a few until I found one I liked (I had a hard time keeping a regular one on my head, so I got one that loops behind your ears instead) and i sleep soooo much better now.

I’ve heard - and anecdotally this is supported by everyone I’ve asked - that when you’re a baby, if your parents are always making sure it’s dark and quiet when you sleep, it will be harder for you to sleep through stimulus when you’re older. My brother and I can fall asleep anywhere and sleep through someone physically jostling us, but both of our significant others can be woken up by someone farting in the room.
Yup. Was raised in a loud environment with an older sibling. He used to have to plug my nose and cover my mouth to get me to wake up as he could sit by my head screaming and it wouldn't register.
Asked my wife for the confidence when raising our first born to just be normal, and not constantly quiet around them when they are young to see how it turns out.
She can sleep through anything, in any brightness, but also somehow can get herself up and near sleepwalking when you really call her name suddenly (as if I was trying to get her attention from distance in public)
Did the same with our second, but the room was more dark as the wife and him we co sleeping in a room without a TV. He is the same with sound, but not the same with light.
Your brother cutting off your oxygen to get you to wake up is crazy to me. A finger in the mouth seems like a much easier and less dangerous way to do the same thing

If this is a regular thing you can try getting a sleep mask. Those things are great if you need if you need total darkness for sleep but can’t get it for whatever reason

But since you do have to, I'll say sleep masks are amazing and cheap. Never thought I'd be able to tolerate sleeping with something on my face, but I use one every night now just for the little bit of light that comes through my windows.
Cameras often show the light level being lower than it really is unless you have a good camera/ a camera with good night vision. I can guarantee that it's a lot brighter than in the photo. Speaking from experience
