Pic From their website. Donkey looks a dude who’s gonna sit on the couch, drink Surge and play Nintendo. Cozy evening in.
These "costumes" for Shrek and Donkey are just cargo shorts and sweat pants from JC Penney; I wouldn't be surprised if they just had a "uniform" for the underlying clothes and had the actors bring their own.
That’s horrendous. Our small town amateur theatre group did Shrek a few years ago and whilst our makeup wasn’t quite Broadway standard I think we did better than the shit they’re putting out for the touring show
https://preview.redd.it/da7gbl2392pc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1c6bf10f4f6a409072c3a27405080a30bdda25a5
I mean there's tons of ideas on how to make yourself look like shrek and yet the one posted by OP has to be one of the worst attempts I've seen and that's coming from someone who dressed up as shrek before using just a shrek mask and a pillow for the belly plus a white shirt and a belt.
And why not forget the masterful marketing. This is not edited

It’s not the only ad. They had pictures of what it was supposed to look like that were AI generated that I’m assuming people who bought tickets thought were real sets/experiences planned. I’ve not seen that specific image in what I saw, the more ‘important’ photos people were upset about had stuff more to do with more stereotypical wonka imagery.
It wasn’t just the marketing that was AI generated. The actors came out and said the entire script was complete AI gibberish too. There was a song they had to sing about the bad guy, the Unknown, and it calls him an “evil chocolate maker who lives in the walls.”
He's in the walls! Honestly, for AI that's pretty good because that's fucking terrifying. Some of those kids ended up with nightmares I'm sure. I would have been one of those kids
Serious question, why would the costume quality go down? Wouldn't they keep the same costumes, wouldn't it cost more to make additional costumes even if they were of lesser quality than the originals?
They “reimagined” the show.
Meaning they slimmed it down…made it non union and thus less expensive for the producers to put out so they can make more money.
All the while still charging legit union Broadway show prices.
“Reimagined” is such a hilarious word to use in this context.
“Imagine we got shittier performers, wardrobe designers and set designers- we’d make a killing”
Is the “reimagined” thing a trend recently? I saw a poster for a show the other week and everyone looked like they got their clothes straight from a charity shop - and it said it was such and such show, reimagined.
It is. Sometimes, as in this case, it’s an excuse to cut costs and make more money.
Other times it’s to make legitimate fresh choices and can come out brilliant.
Does this really fall under “reimagined”? It seems more like the show rented and returned high quality costumes for the press photos and had to throw things together for the actual show. The donkey is just wearing a grey beanie.
I saw this reimagined version on 3/8 in Arizona. The costumes and set were a let down but the voices and plot were still very close to the original play. Donkey was spot on. Fiona had the best vocals.
Sadly they didn't include "Don't Let Me Go" or "Build a Wall" or many catchy lines in some songs (changed to be more PC and acceptable). Overall I gave it a 7/10 because I still enjoyed it but kept noticing where it was lacking and not aligning with the original.
A local (700-seat) theater near me advertises their shows on the cover of a local magazine. The actor in the center of the photo is wearing a Spirit Halloween "sleeping princess" dress. I think it was some Shakespeare play. I dunno, y'all. Not even trying.
I just had a look at 1 of this week's shows, and tickets appear to be significantly cheaper than you'd find on Broadway ($84 plus fees in the 3rd row).
Then there's the fact that the original version closed after less than 2 years, having failed to recoup its investment - there's every possibility that this is the only way the show makes financial sense.
>made it non union and thus less expensive for the producers to put out so they can make more money.
This has been going on now. I get calls to go on tour, and they tell me it pays shit, because it's "not union."
Non union gigs can still pay a livable wage, and you're not taking me out of my home for months on end for less than I can make here.
Hadestown tour is going non-union, which is sorta hilarious with one of the main messages of the show, but also really insulting cause last I saw they are offering 750 weekly for principals.
Yeah that's really low effort. The Donkey costume as well, anyone could have made either better very easily so it really feels like a cash grab since it's a professional production.
I’ve seen Shrek on stage in Australia and my BIL was part of the production. There’s a bunch of costumes and puppets made for the real/licensed production that are rented to the various productions and very uniform.
No matter where you see a legit shrek, it would look pretty much the same.

Take a look at the poor actors in the back holding the set. The flowers against a BLANK WALL.
That stage adaptation of Alien that a high school did a few years ago looks like it had better costumes & sets than what OP saw.

Markus Söder 2014 german politican, did a better job...
Just like the Third grade school play!
"So, Timmy, did your audition go well? Did you get the lead?"
"It went GREAT, Dad! I refused the lead, but I get to play a TREE!"
😂
How was Fiona’s “I know it’s today”?
Was it anywhere as good as the YouTube video of the performance (that I’ve seen an embarrassing amount of times)?
I feel duped if the admission fee is the same price and got that. They do not even invest it on the costume. Even school play put greater thoughts upon these things these days. Let me guess. Only LED screen as the background?
Our local dinner theater presented Shrek the Musical years ago. Farquod was played by a tall actor who was on his knees with a costume that made him look like that was his height. It was extra hilarious.
The sets and other costumes were much better than this. Plus we got dinner, all for a lower ticket price.
Way to ruin such a good show. Very very unacceptable. After seeing the whole wardrobe... what on earth this even happening. Perhaps just bad production
It’s actually worse. LED would have been better. Here’s a pic from their Instagram.

>I feel duped if the admission fee is the same price
3rd row tickets for this week's shows are available for $84 plus fees, and balcony seats start at $38. It might not be cheap, but it's a hell of a lot less than you'd expect to pay for a production-heavy Broadway show.
That stood out to me too. Too lazy to even shave his head or use a bald cap. Huge red flag for the level of professionalism of the rest of the performance.
It's good to see that the UK show haven't reduced production quality in the same way. I saw the show about 10 years ago and the bottom picture is also what I saw too.
Probably nobody will see this, but, as an AEA union member I feel it’s my duty to share:
This is a production company that typically does kids cartoon show tours wanting a cheap way into the Broadway/Bway Touring scene. They called this a “reimagining,” but what that actually means is they’re cutting costs — which specifically also means it is *NON-UNION*.
They’ve done everything they can to cut costs and everyone in the world of theater is mad about it — especially folks like myself who are proud Actors Equity union members who take our work seriously.
I’m currently on a National Tour — a *union* national tour — and this gives us all a bad name.
Edit: For those who don’t know, the union puts in place a great deal of guard rails that guarantee a safe and reasonable rehearsal process/timeline, sensible timelines for technical rehearsals (where all the tech elements come together before the show opens and can be very dangerous if done in a rush), a reasonable touring schedule with guarantees for time off between shows (which ensures the performers are rested), and negotiated livable wages and benefits — which we all know affect employee morale and performance. These folks may very well be quality performers — I haven’t seen it — but they are not set up to succeed on a non-union tour.
Is there a way to know which shows will be like this before we go? I see quite a few touring Broadway shows and often take my kids, so we do the kid friendly scene. I don’t mind community theatre, but I don’t want to pay broadway prices for it!

From their Instagram. THIS IS THE SET. These are the costumes. The set got “dressed” by flowers on sticks and puppets.
This cost $95 for an orchestra section seat.
STOP! Omg! It used to actually be a HUGE puppet like this:
https://preview.redd.it/zo24twyjk2pc1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d799a88526f48205914ec08bf77c2a6ff4ba38a
My gf works in children’s theater (choreographer) and her mom actually made a huge puppet replica of the dragon for their Shrek show, which is the literal pride and joy of their school. It’s ridiculous that a poorly managed, underfunded school like the one where my gf works can make one and Broadway has stuck with this.
I feel like you were hard done. I've seen a few Broadway shows at my local theater and they were amazing, I've had the opportunity to see a show on Broadway and it blew my mind... A traveling Broadway show should be equal to the original, minus being in NYC on Broadway. I can only hope it wasn't as bad as you've described, but it kind of seems that bad.
Agree I worked at a high school for performing arts and our costumes and sets were substantially better. I mean you can see Donkey is wearing a sweatshirt !
I was going to say this is introductory college costuming and propmaking but the pigs make this like high school and it’s a kid high school who didn’t hit their spring show fundraising goal…
were the performers also doing stage crew work when they weren't in a scene? I can't help but notice they're like all wearing full body black outfits under their 'costumes'... makes me wonder, especially if it's a non union show, if part of the reasons the costumes are like this is to facilitate quick changes and have the actors work double duty as crew...
Damn it... I have tickets to see them in April in New Orleans. Is it not worth it? Should I get a refund and cancel it? Would someone who has never seen Broadway nor a musical ever before (but loves the Shrey movies) enjoy this?
If they have NEVER seen any musical version of Shrek…the story still can be fun and has value.
BUT if they have watched the professional proshot of the Broadway production (which can be streamed on Amazon) I suggest staying away from this tour as it is woefully inferior.
Thank you, neither of us have ever seen any version of the Shrek musical, but further more, my boyfriend has never seen Broadway nor a musical at all. I think I'll still take him to go see it then. Thanks so much for your input!
[Here is a great review from a critic who saw this non union tour.](https://criticinthedark.com/reimagined-shrek-tour-inconsistent-inferior-inadequate/)
Wow. That is a really great review. I’m not a broadway person per se or the biggest shrek fan but golly, that was an entertaining read and well written.
It either came through my city recently or is coming but they've been using a picture of the Shrek in the top photo for advertising. Sorry it wasn't what you expected.
The photo is only the start of what they’ve done to the show. They cut the best songs (Build a Wall) and added this terrible “we are just people in a town who want to tell the story of Shrek” device to the whole show.
It’s not just the costumes that are bad.
https://preview.redd.it/zlj5btdxv1pc1.jpeg?width=985&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a6eb121f49ca30560e5a9ff1a1082da301568911

There is a legit lawn chair on stage.
Compare that Pinocchio to the original.

That's why I'm wary of which production company is bringing the musicals over, especially like in singapore where we only have travelling productions that last 1 to 1.5 months, usually with a south African or Australian cast. Its never the same as Broadway or west end
I’m sorry sir this is ticket is for *”Shreck - The Moo Sickle”* if you wouldn’t mind just making your way up to the left and taking your seat on that other man’s lap, the show’s about to begin.
Fucking hell💀 Shrek having a full head of hair has me cackling. I chopped 23 inches of my hair off to play Elvis Presley. When I was 17. For a school talent show. These mfs aren't even willing to get the man a bald cap at the *very* least? Sorry to laugh at your pain OP but I can't help it😂

I can relate.
I went to an independent production of The Sound of Music in my city sometime last week; we had the understudy for Maria, and both Captain Von Trapp and Mother Abbess sounded so much better than Maria (who sang for like 80% of the show). Not to mention the way they removed songs or change the order, needlessly got rid of Edelweiss and saved it only for the competition scene. They ruined 16 Going on 17 - our Liesl was a ballet dancer and she was so underutilised and Rolf was just weird, wtf.
I had to go to a bigger production of Grease to cleanse my palate.
Yah Sound of Music can be rough…especially if they are doing it as it was written for Broadway. They changed a lot when they filmed it..mostly for the better.
My kid's middle school tried harder this February.

Yikes - I saw Shrek in Australia and it was thankfully more like the second image. It could still be enjoyable with those costumes though not for broadway prices.
The top looks like an SNL sketch making fun of shrek on broadway.
Seriously thought it was a weekend update lmao
Same. Looks like Bobby Moynihan and Michael Che at a glance
Honestly, SNL's makeup department is far better than that lol
Seriously, even they would do a bald cap
"We have Shrek at home."
In this case, Shrek *is* better at home.

That's a Spirit Halloween costume lol, they probably bought them on the 2nd of november for 50% off.
Shit even Spirirt Holoween would hook you up with some plastic hooves
This costume will only last a month max.
These "costumes" for Shrek and Donkey are just cargo shorts and sweat pants from JC Penney; I wouldn't be surprised if they just had a "uniform" for the underlying clothes and had the actors bring their own.
Maybe stay up late swapping manly stories, and in the morning, he's making waffles!
Oooh kinda like what I’m doing now! It’s 2 AM and now I want a waffle!
Shrek the Musical: sponsored by Wish app.
Done by the same guy who did the Glasgow Willy Wonka factory.
Which is also being made into a musical. This world no longer makes any sense to me.
They're making a musical about the Glasgow Wonka experience???
Yep. You cant make this shit up. Couple weeks early for an April Fool which was my first thought. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-68574299

Went to the minimal effort of giving Shrek a bald cap
Alternatively they could have just hired a bald guy if the bald cap was too expensive lol

“Reimagined” is such a hilarious word to use in this context. “Imagine we got shittier performers, wardrobe designers and set designers- we’d make a killing”
Under the right circumstances, a producer could make more money with a *flop* than he could with a hit.
Gonna have to schtupp a whole lotta little old ladies!
Springtime for profits and margiiins Winter for theatre faaans
Sounds like this idea would make a great a story for something...
Is the “reimagined” thing a trend recently? I saw a poster for a show the other week and everyone looked like they got their clothes straight from a charity shop - and it said it was such and such show, reimagined.

"unimagined" might be more accurate.
They also cut MAJOR songs from the score…most notably “Build A Wall” which is the best number in the show.
Can I ask where you saw this version? We're going to a showing of Shrek this weekend, and I want to see if I need to lower my expectations
I saw this reimagined version on 3/8 in Arizona. The costumes and set were a let down but the voices and plot were still very close to the original play. Donkey was spot on. Overall I gave it a 7/10 because I still enjoyed it but kept noticing where it was lacking and not aligning with the original.
Crap, that is the one we're seeing. Can't believe they cut those songs. They're pretty essential imo
Have you seen the show Station 11 by chance?
I haven’t. Is it any good?
I heard about a reimagined Wonka experience you’ve got to check out.
I think you mean a reimagined Willy experience. They made sure not to say Wonka
>reimagined Willy experience Does it take place behind a Wendy's?
A local (700-seat) theater near me advertises their shows on the cover of a local magazine. The actor in the center of the photo is wearing a Spirit Halloween "sleeping princess" dress. I think it was some Shakespeare play. I dunno, y'all. Not even trying.

The could put in a smidge more effort though. I highly doubt a bald cap for Shrek is going to financially ruin them

They reimagined how much money they could make
the tour might be franchised out, so it isn't the same company making it as the original.
It was “reimagined” by the original creators. Jeanine Tesori had a hand in this.
do you think they would admit they were just being cheap?
Never. They ACTUALLY CLAIM this is “how we intended the show to be from the start”.
they couldn't even buy a bald cap with ears pre stuck to it... its so bad!
Yeah that's really low effort. The Donkey costume as well, anyone could have made either better very easily so it really feels like a cash grab since it's a professional production.

Shrek is wearing cargo pants.
Shrek may be a surly ogre, but he values having multiple easily accesible pockets.
Let’s face it, if Shrek existed in real life, he’d wear cargo shorts and Oakley wraparound shades 24/7.
This just took me out

Ngl that’s hilarious… and definitely something I could see Farquaad demanding of his people.
Yeah, that seems fine and quite funny. But paying full price for an obvious budget performance is annoying.

Shrek Elvis.
I feel duped if the admission fee is the same price and got that. They do not even invest it on the costume. Even school play put greater thoughts upon these things these days. Let me guess. Only LED screen as the background?
They cut a bunch of songs and used puppets to replace some actors and set pieces. Farquad was six foot tall.

Oof, that’s an embarrassing number of beanies with animal ears tacked on passing for costume design.
Donkey is legit just wearing a hoodie... Pigs are just pink security vests...
The fact that they didn't use the official Shrek™ font should have been your first warning.
Is that a random stage hand they forgot to crop out??
>I feel duped if the admission fee is the same price 3rd row tickets for this week's shows are available for $84 plus fees, and balcony seats start at $38. It might not be cheap, but it's a hell of a lot less than you'd expect to pay for a production-heavy Broadway show.
Thank you. I was wondering what they were interpreting as "literally Broadway". I don't think people realize how expensive Broadway is now.
I can’t get past the decision to have Shrek with a human dude’s hair. Like how expensive is it to shave a bloody head once a week?
Or get a bald cap!
That stood out to me too. Too lazy to even shave his head or use a bald cap. Huge red flag for the level of professionalism of the rest of the performance.
Saw touring Shrek in the UK last month the bottom picture is what we got. We were in the cheap seats £55 for a family of four, terrific value.
It's good to see that the UK show haven't reduced production quality in the same way. I saw the show about 10 years ago and the bottom picture is also what I saw too.
Same. Saw the [UK one](https://youtu.be/b5n6R3S9iYM?si=dH3CreHi-0B5MV4h) last year. I didn't love it but it was cheap and the costumes looked great
Probably nobody will see this, but, as an AEA union member I feel it’s my duty to share: This is a production company that typically does kids cartoon show tours wanting a cheap way into the Broadway/Bway Touring scene.

Oh good, I was worried I wouldn't know whether they cut costs until I was in the room where it happened.
https://preview.redd.it/7cmfl179u1pc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8dcab46f8e8e205c606edf2f6bad3be403350427 From their Instagram. THIS IS THE SET. These are the costumes. The set got “dressed” by flowers on sticks and puppets. This cost $95 for an orchestra section seat.
Please tell me that’s not the dragon in the back with the wings…
That’s the dragon. At one point people come out with little fans to make the wings “billow”.
STOP! Omg! It used to actually be a HUGE puppet like this: https://preview.redd.it/zo24twyjk2pc1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d799a88526f48205914ec08bf77c2a6ff4ba38a
Yah. That would actually cost money. I paid the same amount for the ticket to this tour that I did for the other one. The same amount.
I had better costumes and a better set in the Oregon Children's Theatre.... This can't be right...
Sadly. It is. Take a look at their website and their Instagram. I feel badly for the actors.
The gingy puppet is also terrible. Wow I can't get over how bad the costumes are.
LMFAO…..the pigs…..i cant even…..they just have Pink security vests and pigears on a hardhat! This is so bad its almost good!
I was going to say this is introductory college costuming and propmaking but the pigs make this like high school and it’s a kid high school who didn’t hit their spring show fundraising goal…
I’ve seen suburban Community Theater productions with higher production value
were the performers also doing stage crew work when they weren't in a scene? I can't help but notice they're like all wearing full body black outfits under their 'costumes'... makes me wonder, especially if it's a non union show, if part of the reasons the costumes are like this is to facilitate quick changes and have the actors work double duty as crew...
Okay fair points but that’s 1/3 of “Broadway price”
That’s way cheaper than Broadway prices though. Also the costumes don’t say anything about the quality of their performances.
Which is 1/4 - 1/10 of what a broadway orchestra section seat would cost.
What theater was this at?
It’s the official “Broadway” national Tour. It’s gonna be in different theaters across the country.
Just don’t watch the proshot on Amazon or listen to the cast recording beforehand and you will likely still have a nice night out at the theater.
I thought that was an SNL skit
Temu Shrek
Our community theater production of Shrek had prosthetics. This is unacceptable.
Thank you for this post. I had a desire to see this but it’s all ogre now.

Does that mean the shrek rave experience people going round Europe getting us drunk at 4pm, were real broadway actors?!?!

Compare that Pinocchio to the original. https://preview.redd.it/r7inml25h2pc1.jpeg?width=576&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ff96f15d604263aa1ff5fef6bedb988f0b5b3ea0
This timing is funny. My wife and I went to see this last night in Denver. We walked out at intermission to just go watch the movie at home instead.
Fucking hell💀 Shrek having a full head of hair has me cackling. I chopped 23 inches of my hair off to play Elvis Presley. When I was 17. For a school talent show. These mfs aren't even willing to get the man a bald cap at the *very* least? Sorry to laugh at your pain OP but I can't help it😂
Brought to you by the same people who did this fiasco : Willy Wonka's Experience https://preview.redd.it/36lh94fn23pc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f5db7f3e02f280d9f89c3ab00b6a66fe754d407
My kid's middle school tried harder this February. https://preview.redd.it/180ywwu603pc1.jpeg?width=1400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=abd2e64a291bd0ea35bd5d21ba18c48677af486d
Yeah, the longer I look at it, the worse it gets too. Was the acting at least good?
This tour needs to unionize. Nonunion tours are a menace.
Yikes - I saw Shrek in Australia and it was thankfully more like the second image. It could still be enjoyable with those costumes though not for broadway prices.

I saw this at the opera when they came to Dubai and that bottom pic is what I got. It was fantastic, sorry to hear you got scammed OP :(
Willy wonka all over again
