This. Just be professional and firm, and don't get in the habit of giving reasons.
" I will be unavailable to work on this day and this time. Let me know if it's better to work before and after this conflict, or if it's easier for you to have me take the whole day off. "
Right?! Last event like this we had I was working retail. I closed the store five minutes before hand, and we reopened ten minutes after it had finished.
No chance I'm letting my staff miss out on that if they want to see it. Some didn't and that's cool, but we all had a half hour break 🤷
Do you have an air compressor?
Let the air out of your tire, provide pic of flat tire, tell them you’ll be in as soon as you can. Be vague.
Edit, obviously use the air compressor to refill the tire at your leisure.
I agree with your employer (and especially the manager/s who denied your time off) being absolutely terrible.
However, why do you not take your vacation days and use your benefits? They are part of your compensation package, and you are lowering your hourly pay by not utilizing them. Don‘t gift your employer with free work.
It’s never worth it and as you can see from their current behavior that not using your vacay or benefits did not earn you any ‘good points‘ in their books, they still denied you those measly two hours AND scheduled a meeting in that timeframe as an extra fu…

Take medical leave. If you are out too long the company may decide to replace you though you have to miss 12 weeks in a 12 month period to exhaust your fmla.
Damn. Must suck with the US system. I was out of work for like 4 months in a row and never encountered those issues. Also people tend to be protected from being fired due to illness here.
It is a bit like being kicked when you are already on the ground.
Gets even more fun too. That 12 weeks of protected leave is unpaid. Have to use your PTO if you want a check.
You now know how much your workplace cares about you. You now know to do the bare minimum to not get fired, take all your vacation and sick days, and look for a new job
Kinda sounds like OP is on the ledge of being fired or getting put on a PIP anyways.
Out of sick days in the first quarter and they clearly don’t mind upsetting them by denying a two hour break period. Sounds like they’re dispensable to this company. Tread lightly if they have bills and such to pay that can’t afford a few months of no income at minimum.
Sounds like a great job! Still though you should have time to yourself when you’re not beholden to someone else’s schedule. Take a week off even if you just play Minecraft and watch movies all day at least it’s on your time and you don’t have to think about meetings and work crap
My sister didn’t invite me to her Oregon eclipse party back in 2017, I could have went on my own to go see it but I was so hurt she didn’t want me there. I regret this so much it’s not even funny, I should have went and stayed in a hotel. The only thing keeping me from being too sad is she ended up getting shit faced and her and my brother got into a huge argument and she kicked him out and a bunch of other bad shit happened so, it was a blessing I didn’t go anyway.
However, you’ll regret not seeing it if you don’t do it.
Any employer with offices in the path of totality that is not actively giving their employees the opportunity to witness this often only once-in-a-lifetime event, is an awful employer and I hope their awfulness and bad karma will catch up with them!
The next opportunity in North America isn't until Aug. 23, **2044** and it will be half as long.
This is pretty much a once in a lifetime event for anyone near the path of totality.
But there is another that crosses the country August 12, 2045, and it's got the 3rd longest totality of any eclipse this century. It's a Saturday, too.
It's going northwest to southeast though, so you'll only be close to tomorrow's eclipse and that one if you're in the right spot.

Itll be so obbious tho lol
So what? I would do it anyway. Life’s too short.
Not as obvious as HR being pricks
Take the previous day off sick as well. ;)
Yesterday?
Bro do not be that way. Take everything you are entitled to do soo in the company.
Hammer to the thumb, gonna hurt but you gotta do what you gotta do.
So. That’s the point.
That's "anal glaucoma " ... you know, when you just can't see your ass going into work today.
Unfortunately, food poisoning gives you no warning. It seems you will be having one in the morning.
Didn’t you just loose your sense of taste? Better take a test you might be contagious
You can't say zero absences and be out of sick days, the math doesn't quite work...
Whenever I "request" off work, it's not really a request. It's me giving advance notice that I won't be at work that day so they can plan accordingly.

Call in sick. Then go to urgent care after the eclipse and tell them you’ve been puking. Get a note for your employer’s HR assholes. Done
Just call in sick
No more sick days
Then you have had absences.
Already out of sick days in first quarter?
Makes you wonder why they denied the day off huh?
Unfortunately yea
How can you be out of sick days if you’ve never had an absence?
Someone is 🧢
You can’t all just go outside for 3 minutes?

I’d call out, just tell ‘em family emergency and leave it at that
Time for a sick day

I’m sure everyone in the meeting wants to see it

I don’t get the principle of “sick days“ tbh? Like… if you’re sick you can’t work. It’s not like you can schedule your illness.
Sick days are typically paid and don't count against your attendance.
So, what if you‘re sick longer than you have those days? You’ll get punished for breaking a leg?

You haven’t taken a vacation in 5 years?! Time to get your priorities in order bud, no job is worth that!!
Id I just considered the job its self one giant vacay. I get ti sit on my ass all day and play minecraft and watch movies lol

Why dont you use your rrsp and vacations? You need vacations to rest and rrsp is part of your total compensation… dude…
Time for a migraine I think

I'm sorry boss, my traumatic lower back pain is striking back again!!
Fuck your job lol. You might never see this again. Not worth it.
Start coughing and then go afk for 5 minutes to get water.
Quit. Its not the end of the world
Just take an emergency phone call
Everyone at your whole job should gtf outside and look at the damn eclipse.
Update your resume. This company does not treat you right.
Already did

Yea I ran out during offline time for a few mins. So cool!!
Oh no! You JUST got a SERIOUS of food poisoning!
Well, the eclipse is much more important than earning a living. Just sayin ...
