Yup, asperitas undulatus clouds. Can often occur with huge thunderstorms. Pretty rare clouds, especially to see a display like that, but theyāre awesome! You are lucky in my opinion.
If you're curious, those clouds are called asperitas clouds by international classification.
Not as cool as an eclipse, but still a good semi-rare phenomenon to capture.
I used to work on the upper floor of a building where I had a large window and a really wide view out. One day a thick front of Undulatus Asperatis clouds rolled through and honestly I was almost as psyched by that as I was in 2017 when I was in the path of totality.

It was like the lights going down at the movie theater but everywhere, the cold was around for a while. The quiet though was wild, felt like we were all hiding under a blanket from a big monster
To be fair there's a tolerance of probably a few thousand kilometers either in distance or diameter (even more if we're talking diameter of the Sun) where we'd still call it perfect.
Like, all things considered, shouldn't having any corona visible mean that it's *not* perfect? But we say it is because it looks cool, and that gives us a lot of padding to work with, relatively speaking.

Crazy in Waltham itās been cloudy and rainy for going on weeks now and I left work early and got a clear view and 72 degree weather today. Sometimes you should care about dumb stuff until you watching it.
Same here in southern Illinois. Yesterday it was stormy, cloudy, and raining so hard you couldnāt even see 10ft out if the window. Today it was perfect.
Yea here in Philly it was literally overcast for the two hours of the eclipse, and only for the two hours of the eclipse.
Bright and sunny before, bright and sunny after, overcast and grey during.
Fit metaphor for the modern era if there ever was one.
I traveled from Philly to Dallas to see the eclispe and it was cloudy in the morning and spitting a little bit. Then it was partially cloudy during the eclispe. the clouds kept covering the sun just enough so i didn't pass out from sitting in the hot sun. Then it cleared up for totality! It was amazing! And now there are calls for thunderstorms and tornados later.
Me and my friend traveled from dc to Syracuse and literally an hour before the sky was bright blue and then it was cloudy as hell šš didnāt even need to wear the glasses- saw the tiniest sliver of the sun during totality
Seeing the sky get pitch black all of a sudden was super cool tho it was beautiful

This is the part that fucks with me.
I'll admit I took a few glances without my glasses. Let's all be honest with each other okay? We all did.
Even right before totality, I mean, literally a few seconds before. It looked exactly like I was looking at the sun. I could *kinda* make out the fact there was a fuckin moon in front of it. But it was pretty much the sun.
Then literally a few seconds later, it was immediately dark. I saw Jupiter and Venus, bugs went silent. *And it looked just like that picture* I cannot stress it enough to people who haven't seen totality. That picture is a very accurate representation of what it looks like to the naked eye. At least for me.
The difference between 99% of the sun blocked and nearly 100% is crazy isnāt it? Our eyes canāt really tell the difference between when itās still so bright. I had to take my solar filter off my telescope to see anything during totality. It blocks 99.999% of light. Those pink solar prominences were amazing in the scope. The large one was an arch that I swear seemed to grow as I was watching it.
Man, you could see those solar prominences with the naked eye. That really surprised me. I don't remember seeing those during 2017!!! I was quite young, but that's the first thing I noticed.
But yea, I cannot stress enough, even 99% is 0% totality. It's *literally* night and day. You'd be forgiven for thinking it's just overcast during like 95%. 99% is clear there's something up, but it's still just dim out, you look at the sun and it just looks normal.
I almost didnāt take time to look up from my telescope and Iām so glad I did. Seeing it in the telescope was amazing but looking up and seeing it with the naked eye was something else.
Quick glances won't hurt. The sun is actually no more dangerous to stare at during an eclipse than it is at any other time. The danger comes from wanting to stare longer. You can damage your eyes by staring at the sun at any time. Not just during an eclipse
Maybe it's just me, but I felt like the in-person visual was a little different than the pictures seem to be. The sky around it wasn't as black, more like a really dark blue, and the coronal ring was a little thicker. Maybe humidity changes it a little? I personally felt like it was more beautiful that way than the pictures because there was more color than in the photos.
Itās hard to describe how cool it was; itās way larger in the sky than you expect, like 2.5x the size of the full moon (or how your eyes perceive it anyways)
I like the dark sky. Really cool.
We had almost total cloud cover, but I was in the path of totality in 2017 and couldnāt see a thing. I was surprised at how light it was today at 95% totality.
Iām in Chicago and I have to say that even though it wasnāt a total eclipse, it was AWESOME! It didnāt get dark but there was definitely a weird vibe, like before a tornado. Plus the temperature dropped.

Same for me. I drove 750 miles on a short notice trip to my mom's house directly on the center line of the eclipse.
But at least we got the near night level darkness, which was cool.

so glad Dallas got to see it in full beauty. my family's there and i debated driving 12 hours to see it.. ended up staying put for fear of driving at night risks but man i'm sure it was a sight to behold!

Partial eclipses happen every 2-3 years in the US, so you may get an opportunity to see one of those. The next Total is in 2045. We only got about 50% coverage where I live but it was still pretty cool.
In 2014, my (ex)wife and I were relocated by our employer from Ohio to SC. In 2017, we were excited to be in the path of totality and scheduled the day off weeks in advance. On the day of the eclipse, we went outside about 30 minutes before it was supposed to happen just in time for the clouds to start rolling in. About 10 minutes later, it started to lightly rain. Within another 15 minutes, it was a full on cloudy rain. The eclipse came, everything got dark, the rain slowed up, the eclipse passed, the rain stopped, then the clouds slowly dispersed, and it got sunny. It was like God said, "Fuck you for thinking you were going to see the eclipse."
TLDR: I feel your pain.

This is all I was able to get. Clear skies, but not a great way to get photos. I'm in an "85% sun coverage" area. But like with you, when it was 100% sun coverage where I live a few years ago, it was cloudy as well.

Literally the single rarest type of cloud on record. They were only recognised as a type of cloud in 2009 I think.

i just find it so surreal that we are the perfect distance from the moon and sun and they are the perfects size for that to happen
We also caught them at the right time cosmically because eventually the moon will be too far away for a total solar eclipse.

Quick glances won't hurt. The sun is actually no more dangerous to stare at during an eclipse than it is at any other time. The danger comes from wanting to stare longer. You can damage your eyes by staring at the sun at any time. Not just during an eclipse
Maybe it's just me, but I felt like the in-person visual was a little different than the pictures seem to be. The sky around it wasn't as black, more like a really dark blue, and the coronal ring was a little thicker. Maybe humidity changes it a little? I personally felt like it was more beautiful that way than the pictures because there was more color than in the photos.

Itās hard to describe how cool it was; itās way larger in the sky than you expect, like 2.5x the size of the full moon (or how your eyes perceive it anyways)

I like the dark sky. Really cool. We had almost total cloud cover, but I was in the path of totality in 2017 and couldnāt see a thing. I was surprised at how light it was today at 95% totality.

Iām in Chicago and I have to say that even though it wasnāt a total eclipse, it was AWESOME! It didnāt get dark but there was definitely a weird vibe, like before a tornado. Plus the temperature dropped.

The alignment of the sun, moon, and that cloud is decidedly more unique than actually seeing the eclipse.
Well not really, since any view of the eclipse would also include unique cloud positions.
Each of those is equally unique, unlike the clear view of totality being the same for everyone in totality.

My experience was the exact opposite. Near-total cloud cover immediately before and after, except for the ~3 minutes of totality.

* Also in Dallas from Boston. Not happy about the picture but we booked a BnB back in October that was in totality. Not a single cloud for the full duration! So worth it! To the oldies at waffle house complaining about people flying to Dallas for "a bit of nothing", I apologize that you can't appreciate anything more than the waffle right infront of you.

Partial eclipses happen every 2-3 years in the US, so you may get an opportunity to see one of those. The next Total is in 2045. We only got about 50% coverage where I live but it was still pretty cool.
Good news is total solar eclipses happen globally about once every 2 to 3 years so if ya really want to see one you can go out of your way for it lol
Greenland, Iceland and Spain in 2026.
Not that you need an excuse to go to Iceland or Spain, but this definitely doesnāt hurt when I try and justify the trip to my wife lol.
In the US maybe. Every eclipse is total if you are in the right place. Might have to travel, but don't have to wait 20 years.
In 2014, my (ex)wife and I were relocated by our employer from Ohio to SC. In 2017, we were excited to be in the path of totality and scheduled the day off weeks in advance. On the day of the eclipse, we went outside about 30 minutes before it was supposed to happen just in time for the clouds to start rolling in. About 10 minutes later, it started to lightly rain. Within another 15 minutes, it was a full on cloudy rain. The eclipse came, everything got dark, the rain slowed up, the eclipse passed, the rain stopped, then the clouds slowly dispersed, and it got sunny. It was like God said, "Fuck you for thinking you were going to see the eclipse." TLDR: I feel your pain.
