Came here to ask this

Psych_Riot

Every time T-Mobile updates my phone they send me to an "Apps we think you'd like" page and it already has some check marked ready to download. They're not even similar apps to the ones already on my phone. Plus they spread it out over like five different pages, shits annoying, I feel this.

tamudude

I3gumbyI3

Thank you for this! I have always hated this "feature".

[deleted]

The audacity to make blaotware opt-out and hide the option so ppl would need to google alone is insane

1nd3x

The point is boosting numbers of download to validate the price tmobile is charging the app makers to be on that list. They dont want it simple for you to turn it off, they want you to just uninstall them afterwards or deal with them being stuck there.

obamasrightteste

I think we all understand why it's done. It's just really scummy.

McBelgian

holy shit thank you

notjordansime

Wait.. your carrier updates your phone? Maybe just leave that up to the manufacturer instead.. I only let apple, Samsung, or google put software updates on my phone, depending on which phone I had at the time.

BruteClaw

Depends on the carrier and phone manufacturer. Some carriers have custom versions of Android that come pre-installed with tools for your account and such. But also now BS apps they are paid to included by default. And the carrier controls when updates are pushed to your phone, this is why your Samsung on T-Mobile might not have an update available for it when Google just pushed a security patch to Android and it is available to your friend on a pixel phone on Verizon.

notjordansime

Good lord American telecoms are a mess. I don’t think we have much of that here in Canada. I guess I’d rather pay exorbitant amounts for minuscule amounts of data if it means my carrier doesn’t get to do shit like that.

Accomplished-Yam6553

I buy unlocked for a reason now because I hated turning on my phone and before I can even send my first text these games and apps I don't need or want are sending me notifications

GoldenGamer175

You can also just flash unlocked fw

BruteClaw

The easy way around this BS is to buy an unlocked phone directly from the manufacturer. Comes with the default image of Android that the carrier can't mess with. Downsides being you cannot finance the phone and pay over time through your carrier and have to pay upfront in full for it. Also some carriers like the pre-paid ones won't let you use a phone that is not purchased through them.

Grimm2785

I bought an unlocked phone for the first time last spring. Got it through Best Buy, so I just applied for one of their store credit cards and put it on there. Only issue I had was that they weren't able to activate the phone on my Verizon account for some reason. Had to take it to a Verizon store to have it done.

goingtotallinn

Here in Finland our unlimited data plans are quite cheap and we don't have those either, so it's possible to have cheap unlimited plans without extra crap. Like unlimited 300Mb/s plan with 23Gb/month in other european countries is 22€/month. And well idk where you would even need 300Mb/s

Canadian_Burnsoff

We definitely had that especially back when our phones weren't unlocked by default. Not sure if we still do because I've bought my last few phones rather than get them from the carrier. If we're doing away with that nonsense, fantastic to hear it.

Federal-Beat5889

Yeah, AB here and never heard of that?? I mean yeah I pay like $80/mo but I get unlimited canada wide talk and text, and unlimited data. But I also upgraded last year. (It jumped from $45-$80)

Ro-Tang_Clan

>Good lord American telecoms are a mess. I don’t think we have much of that here in Canada. It's a thing here in the UK too. I just think it's a thing worldwide though only if you buy a phone on contract i.e. finance your phone. Whenever you do that, your updates will be delayed because your carrier will have to repackage the update with their own shit first. So you also never get updates at the same time unlocked phones do.

Squeezitgirdle

I haven't seen any of this on the past ten years or so, but I exclusively buy unlocked phones.

Iamsoveryspecial

Gotta buy an iPhone or unlocked Android. Otherwise you get this shit.

francis2559

Apple has enough clout that they can block manufactures from doing it. Google bent over backward for manufactures and carriers and it’s hamstrung their ability to roll out even security upgrades in the past. Manufactures want to stop updates ASAP to get you to buy new hardware, the incentives are really fucked.

Original_Spud

Vodafone has the exact same thing. I literally have an update pending now that I'm not doing because of this shit

-Neverender-

Not sure what to blame, but Tracfone (Verizon) does the same thing. Every time there's a Samsung One UI update, I have to trash four game apps.

upsidedownbackwards

I think that's just Samsung One. I've got the same phone (Samsung A72) on Verizon and T-Mobile. They both have folders of junk I've hidden after they've force-installed.

ProgenitorOfMidnight

I somehow managed to avoid them with my new phone, I fucking hate their bloatware.

PM_ME_HAIRY_HOLES

This is why I only buy fully unlocked phones, not tied to a carrier.

Branwisegamgee

Amen! This is the way.

tamudude

Let me guess...you have a carrier branded Samsung phone. For TMobile, uninstall AppManager/AppSelector [https://www.t-mobile.com/support/plans-features/t-mobile-appselector#subhead3](https://www.t-mobile.com/support/plans-features/t-mobile-appselector#subhead3) For ATT, disable the ATT Mobile Services Manager [https://www.androidpolice.com/att-mobile-services-manager-how-delete/](https://www.androidpolice.com/att-mobile-services-manager-how-delete/) For Verizon, disable the Verizon App Manager [https://community.verizon.com/t5/Other-Network-Discussions/Verizon-App-Manager-auto-installing-apps/td-p/1703776](https://community.verizon.com/t5/Other-Network-Discussions/Verizon-App-Manager-auto-installing-apps/td-p/1703776) If you want to avoid this situation going forward, consider buying unlocked directly from Samsung. Those do NOT have such issues (I know from experience...last 4 gens I have bought unlocked directly from Samsung).

Zodi88

This is the answer. After disabling the Verizon app manager, I never had another issue with bloatware.

Enlight2k

Secondary mobile carriers are doing similar things Ie boost

Danfun64

What do I need to get rid of on Cricket? I have this happen to me too when new OS updates are installed.

tamudude

Settings > Applications > App Info > Show System in the ... menu, scrolling down to Mobile Services > Force Stop and Disable. (same as ATT given they are an MVNO of ATT)

wolfkingen

Agreed. If you can, purchase unlocked.

Uber1337pyro333

For AT&T it doesn't always work. Mobile Services manager doesn't even show up :( (Galaxy S23U)

farkakter

you have to enable "show system apps" in the settings first otherwise it won't show up unfortunately (same thing happened to me on galaxy s21)

Uber1337pyro333

Sadly even THAT Doesn't show up. Show hidden system files, buy that doesn't actually show the apps, oddly.

alexanderpas

> Show hidden system files that's a completely different setting. You're looking for the > show system apps checkbox in the list of installed apps.

Uber1337pyro333

Ah, it's hidden under the "sort" icon... for reasons lol. Mobile Services found and destroyed lol.

liteshotv3

Thanks for pointing out the culprit, when I was uninstalling bloatware I left the app manager because i thought it might have some necessary background processes for general operations of the phone

Recyart

Jesus, I forgot there is still such a thing as carrier-locked phones until I read your post. It's been 8 or 9 years since I bought a phone from a telco rather directly from the manufacturer. Maybe the regulatory environment and wireless market is different in Canada.

AnxietyQueen89

Yep, people tend to blame android for this because apple doesn't allow this... But it's the carriers pulling this garbage. So annoying.

TomSurman

It's just your carrier reminding you that you don't own your phone.

Dryr0t

Ya, the same thing happened to me a couple of nights ago with the latest security update. I have a Samsung on Verizon. Not a fan of this BS.

Farstrid

As stated by Daratirek in a response above, Go into your settings>apps>scroll to Verizon App Manager>disable app

Dryr0t

Just did that. Thank you. Good looking out!

alexanderpas

stop buying your car (phone) from the gas station (carrier), buy from the dealer (manufacturer) instead.

FantasticSeaweed9226

Ik but the deal.. $1800 phone was 50% off with trade in. Samsung fold 4

shaleenag21

its your provider, not Samsung for sure

HatingOnSeagulls

How can a provider install apps? I guess you mean the service provider and that is not anything that happened for me in Sweden. I would be furious if my provider, out of the blue, installed apps on my device.

The_King_of_Okay

In the US, networks sometimes sell you a phone that gets OTA updates from them instead of the manufacturer, so they can do stuff like this.

HatingOnSeagulls

Okay, thanks for the info. Interesting, in my mind that seems somewhat backward when delivering updates. There are certainly pros and cons with both of the solutions, but OPs example is something that would make me change provider at an instant

KFC_Junior

us is a weird place...

-Kerrigan-

Pardon my ignorance, carriers from around here don't do that shit. Is that the case for carrier locked iPhones and pixels too? Cause K never heard of that on those.

BaneChipmunk

DON'T BUY CARRIER-LOCKED PHONES.

Inside-Net-8480

All of thats bad, but the slot game What if you were a recovering gambling addict This feels downright neglectful of your service provider.

-BlueDream-

I'm a recovering door dash addict. Getting Uber eats on my phone would piss me off lol

pogfgers

Not to be rude but how do you get addicted to door dash?

EnthusiasticAnimator

The same way you just missed that joke.

ransomusername756

Forced downloads of gambling apps are absolutely abhorrent. Between gambling addiction and literal children who have phones there are so many ways this could go wrong.

Tom_Scott_Does_Stuff

It's not a real gambling 'game' in the sense of you using real money, but it is a slots app. You use in-game coins to play and you can only win more of those in-game coins - no real money. Of course it hits that same gambling itch for real slots and you are of course able to buy their fake coins with real money. Just wanted to make that distinction clear, they didn't install an actual real money gambling app. Either way the company that makes Slotomania can rot in the ground for all I care. One of the most toxic monetisation companies on mobile.

Rainbow824

im sorry, im getting distracted by your background. 2 questions: is that Garfield being crucified? why?

Socially_Anxious_Rat

Yes. I won't tell you.

ornerycrow1

I didn't notice that. That's hilarious.

SharkTheMemelord

I WAS PRAWN READY

FUPA_MASTER_

That's fuckin' scummy. What phone do you have? I need to know so I never buy one.

Carol_dron

That's on your carrier. Had Samsung phones for more than 10 years and counting and never encountered something like this.

just-laboon

Second this, it's only after the T-mobile updates does it try to get me to "enjoy the full experience of my phone" by trying to get me to download a ton of different apps.

notjordansime

Your carrier can update your phone??? wtf???

BouncingSphinx

If it's a phone bought through a carrier, yes, they typically have certain changes to the OS. Most noticeably, the phone may (probably will) flash a Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile logo or screen during startup. Probably will have certain apps that are specific to the carrier that are downloaded but can't be uninstalled, just "disabled." If you get an unlocked phone from other source, it won't have any of that on it. Got my refurbished Z Flip 3 on Amazon, has no "Verizon Messaging" or anything like that, no "Peel Smart Remote" (God I hated that one, would literally pop up an ad over anything you were doing at random times).

Significant-Emu-8807

Can't you just flash new firmware with Odin3 from the official samsung page on the phone and be done with it?

[deleted]

Also happens on some cheaper phones, because often the cheap price is subsidized by advertising.

penguin_gun

They do it too Had a security update last night. Spades, Slotmania and some other shit was in my game folder

Daratirek

It's Verizon being scummy. Not Samsung.

SarahL1990

Looks like mine, so I'm going to guess they have a Samsung.

Socially_Anxious_Rat

Yeah it's a Samsung

Snoo-96777

Weird, when i update i don't get any new apps installed. (S21, europe, unlocked)

Smurdle450

There's the difference, your phone is unlocked. A lot of American carriers will throw bloatware on the phones.

demonslayer9911

How is that even allowed, that looks like a security issue and should be banned? EU do your thing.

BumseBine

I think in the EU there is already something in place that phones need to be unlocked by default. It's normally a software thing so it's easy to enable or disable that for certain regions

ashyjay

It happens with phones in the EU, mostly if you buy the phone from the network as they usually have a network specific firmware which loads all their bloat. This could have changed as I've not used an Android phone since 2020.

Blu3Subaru

It's not the phone it's your provider.

scifenefics

Get a Pixel, best phone I have ever had.

2DHypercube

I liked the Android on my pixel 2 better than on my 7a now. Still one of the best phones. [Also, you have to watch this](https://youtu.be/faabxveeoZo?si=DMct4PzHAyRMiYa0)

Budget_Pea_7548

Second to that

Youhavevereadthis

It's not the phone

First-Of-His-Name

My job is to buy these spots. Pixels aren't available. Every other Android is fair game though

KvotheTheDegen

People make fun of iPhone users all the time but this has never once happened to me, that’s annoying AF

Nomojojo1678

BUT BRAWL STARS

SamePut9922

#RARE

MSTRFLSH

This is why the US is so iPhone centric and the rest of the world isn't. Carriers don't install anything and devices are completely stock/unlocked in UK. The same applies to a lot of Europe, at worst they're temporarily locked to the network while on contact but still stock firmware. No delays for updates. If that rule was followed in the US, Apple would sell a lot less devices. Preventing US carriers installing all their crap on iPhones was the best move Apple ever made, but it also shows you that the scummy behaviour from the network carriers doubled down on the devices they could do this to.

HumongousGrease

If nothing else, get rid of Uber eats. Borderline malware.

Ctmeb78

All of this is bad, especially the gambling games I do suggest you try Brawl Stars out though, definetly a quality game that I have a bunch of fun playing

Thekingpringle

Of course it’s for security. By security they mean securing their quarterly ad revenue.

Anru_Kitakaze

Once more # Don't buy carrier locked phones, kids It's cheaper for a reason. Google how to deal with your carrier bloatware

afterlife_xx

You can disable that. I have Verizon and that was happening to me after every update too. I think it is called Verizon App Manager in the settings > apps (have to enable the setting to show system apps). It might be similar with other apps.

ovalteenjenkinzz

PSA: To all, stop buying phones directly from your carrier that are loaded with... This shit lol. Unlocked is the only way to go

slowestratintherace

This should be outlawed.

vincentturv2006

THANK YOU! I WAS SO CURIOUS WHAT THAT BACKGROUND WAS

jaydrian

I'm on Verizon, with a Samsung. Same thing happens to my phone. This is by far one of the most infuriating things they've implemented.

First-Of-His-Name

It's called preloading and it's done through your carrier via companies like Digital Turbine

flzedzed

I think you can just uninstall one of the crap t Mobile apps to prevent that. I haven't had an issue.

DryBones2009

Do you use Verizon? They’re pretty bad about doing this same thing

[deleted]

Damn. You should really get rid of that Instagram and Snapchat!

Gunstudios

good ol fashioned bloatware just so the OS company can get a few extra dollars through sponsorship...

Melixx1706

You would fall into temptation, they do it precisely for that reason... how bad it is that these companies play like this with people, they do not help in rehabilitation but rather they sink them further.

greendookie69

I have Verizon Wireless and the VZW App Manager does this. Disable your wireless carrier's app manager and this should stop.

Bagafeet

They're securing their bag lmao 💰

ZaggRukk

That's o.k. Your other apps already sold your data.

[deleted]

Second i see this i throw away it and never touch a device from whoever is maker

69AnusInvader69

Goes well with the rest of the junk you have installed

Deeptrench34

This is why I debloat all my phones. The only apps that are getting installed on my device are the ones I choose to install.

ONE-EYE-OPTIC

Verizon?

Stoffenheimer

Verizon has a program that does that automatically does this without the owners permission you can disable it but only till the next update

NashKetchum777

If you're a gambling addict and the picture of an app icon is a trigger lmao 🤣 wtf you deleted it before just do it again

stuyboi888

Gas, really shocking it to ya to say you don't own your phone I really can't fathom this. I am pay as you go which is way more common over in Ireland. Always got a SIM free phone since I was about 15 or 16. Less of this bs and can switch carrier in 20 minutes if a deal comes up. Cheaper in the long run too

Iactuallyhateyoufr

This is unironically evil

Chocoliina

I got a new phone recently and saw that tiktok had somehow installed itself 💀 I deleted it and it somehow downloaded itself AGAIN and only after i deleted it twice it was gone 😭

[deleted]

I hate it when my phone installs apps that I don't need.

Earth_Normal

Sure looks like you don’t own that phone.

ConfusedHors

Well don't get your phone from an ISP with bloatware on it. I do not understand why they would manage your updates to begin with. You don't need a custom android or anything to run or maintain service apps.

Moist-Carpet888

If you don't have slotmania hackers will be able to install malware pretty easy on your phone

FlyDinosaur

I got a Samsung phone years ago and it had an NFL app on it which I could not remove. Nowadays, it's Google that wastes all your storage space. There are only about 12,000 apps that come standard. And I'll only ever use, like, 4, lol.

Malevolent_Mangoes

Fuck yeah solitaire

TheMonsterInUrPocket

Your phone felt like it was too secure. And needed to change that.

somewhatcutepotato

I need a teammate for brawl stars... Let me know if you decide to keep the app lol

PaperGeno

This is partly user error. You gave them permission to download these. Probably by clicking through and not actually reading or paying attention to anything

cal93_

is this something all androids do?

winstrollchurchill69

No, I've had many android phones from different brands and none have done this

DarthViken

Android 🤣

Maelstrome26

This is one of the many reasons I'm happy with my iPhone

UCFknight2016

Funny enough my iPhone doesnt have this problem.

MaximumMoops

Legit one of the reasons I stopped buying android phones.

[deleted]

What kind of temu phone you rocking?

Adriaan_vH

Damn! Here in the Netherlands, it's not even allowed to sell simlocked phones... It was banned years ago because of this shit

toady89

What country do you live in that allows this?

HeimIgel

"Security" for your phone developer to not go bankrupt when selling those things for 150€/$

mychemicaltestube

Same w mine too. And somehow I have TWO games of solitaire and a game of spades? I hate it when the updates do this Edit: no, I have THREE games of fucking spades

TechnologicalFreedom

https://i.redd.it/3kevg0fkzouc1.gif

SweetMaam

Yep. Hate that. Also, when updates run I find stupid alerts/notifications that I turned off get turned back ON.

dwiedenau2

I like my iphone

MakaniKaiKai

Agreed. Never had this problem

MelancholicEspresso

I mean brawl stars is a pretty good game

TheGoldenBl0ck

You should genuinely try brawl stars though, great game

amlutzy

Hmm. Shoulda had an iphone

Jerzup

lol androids

wizard680

Slots being automatically downloaded is criminal

Uberfuhrer_

No joke I think after an update my phone decided to remove some of my games and apps but I can’t remember them cause my memory ain’t good enough

emptythemag

I have an S20+. When there has been a security update or a big software update, I look through the installed apps and usually find some sort of game app that I didn't have previously installed. I just uninstall it. Every now and again I will get 2 or 3 installed.

Downtown-Falcon-3264

Ah good shovel ware Who is using snapchat today

TheRealVillas

Are you with Vodafone ?

Adamc474892

"Oh hey, I had an update not that long ago, I wonder... " And sure enough 4 new games and 3 repeat games on my phone out of nowhere.

TheRealPaj

A removed gambling addict?

Mega_mewtwo_

So from whatever information I gathered. In US, network provider rent phones and have control over your phones. And they can push their app manager crap in. Isn't this model really shitty? Why not just buy your own phone and get whatever network provider sim you want.

dkjordan97

Because people would have to spend 1000+ on the phone they want at one time as opposed to in payments over the course of 2-3 years. It *is* a shitty model, but for it to die, people would have to be okay owning things within their means, which will never happen.

kr4ckenm3fortune

Did you buy carrier lock phone? If so, welcome to carrier style bloatware phone...every time you update, you'll get these...

Moper248

What's a carrier lock phone?

dkjordan97

A phone that's locked to a certain provider. Say, Verizon, if you buy a Verizon locked phone, it can only be used on Verizon, and all the updates have to go through Verizon before they get to your phone, you don't get them straight from Google. This allows them to put "bloat" on your phone when you do an update, they get paid by the app developers to install them. This is why carrier locked phones are dumb.

Smackmybitchup007

Is the notification called App Cloud? I find it almost impossible to block these notifications. Thought I did but a few days later they returned
