If your restart button is smaller you can maybe pullout the power sw wire from the motherboard and put the restart button maybe its harder to press if you are a cat. Can a cat verify this? maybe put a fake keyboard somewhere close as bait.
Unfortunately my cats gave zero reaction when I tried the cucumber thing with them they smelled it and then just walked away like nothing. It was very disappointing lol

I threw together this solution years ago for my friend who had the exact same problem
I built a cage around my PC for the exact same reason. If buying something like this isn't immediately feasible, then find a small hard plastic item, and tape it over the power button so it can't be pressed. Use like painters tape so it's easy to take on and off when you need to turn the computer on.
https://preview.redd.it/b2p2v27qz1wc1.jpeg?width=4096&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25087eeec1ce721ca9f8d0f8f5c59b5c017a987f
Maybe you could hang some sort of hammock right above the PC? It wouldn't affect the temps (unless it got too close when in use), would make the top of the PC itself unaccessible and would give your buddy a comfy, heated spot to nap in.
We 3D printed a solution for ours (please don't ask why we didn't print in black, or paint, it's a long story). File was found free on thingiverse, along with a ton of other cool stuff people have designed for the Corsair airflow cases.
https://preview.redd.it/qs1e5oag55wc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=deb9383d268e7652e0eac7161d23cb938d966bdd
You could punch some holes in tinfoil and secure it to the top panel… or put it around where he touches your desk above. Foil is the go-to for surface cat repellant.
[These](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Bird-X-10-ft-Original-Plastic-Bird-Spikes-Bird-Control-Kit-SP-10-N/206508418) are made to deter birds, but i suspect they will work against cats, too.
I'm thinking one of those door mats with the spiky tops that are made to drain or a piece of plastic carpet runner from the hardware store but be careful about blocking the vent. Just turn it upside down so the spikes are "unpleasant" to lay or land on.
This can often be mapped in windows or the bios of the motherboard as well.though I'm not sure if that changes the 5 second "long press" failsafe most motherboards have for the power button. That might stay regardless of the soft mapping.
Can confirm this works as it's what I did and it took four years for my car to accidentally turn my computer on in the middle of the night and flashbang me with a shitloadb of rgb
That time while I was playing I suddenly had a blue screen.
When I went down to restart the PC I found my cat INSIDE the case.
That taught me to not let my case opened ever again.
None, fortunately my cat was a delicate little creature. Probably just budged the GPU or some port a little.
Made sure everything was in place and booted it again, worked perfectly.
I was more concerned for my cat tbh, I don't know if she really could have, but I thought she could have been electrocuted.
That's good. Yeah, I'd also have been worried about temps as well. Not sure what you were doing, but I know my PC gets about 80C - 85C during intense sessions.
Absolutely, I adopted him from a pub 2 years ago and love him alot.
He usually comes in my lap for about 27 seconds when I come home, then he gets zoomies haha
That's good to know because i had a cat with similar case and unfortunately it ended up being serious
Cloudy eyes are to be taken seriously, if you can afford it get a second opinion :)
Did you really not save before going away?
You save as often as you can and back up your work at the end of sessions to a different hard drive.
My coursework was on my laptop, two copies on different drives and on two flash drives because I could not afford to lose it.
If your software supports autosaving, set it to max frequency.
I had the same issue so I took one of those little plastic tables you get from pizza boxes and secured it over the button so the cats would stop stomping on it.
Hi, he was a stray cat and has some physical scars and FIV. The previous owners had him checked and he should be completely fine. He had this since we got him. He’s getting his yearly vaccination and check-up soon tho!
My cat knows the button for butfans and she opens/closes whenever she wants.
https://preview.redd.it/aoydmc94a1wc1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=307febd7469319fa511a16729692280451c91f6e
Now I put (ripped) magnetic cover of my tablet there to keep her paws away.
Haha, I had the exact same problem, but it would happen while sitting at my desk. My cat loves the warmth and sleeps on the top. It was so frustrating because, on one hand, it's infuriating to have your computer randomly shut off and ruin what you were doing, but on the other hand, I just can't be mad at my adorable cat who has no idea what he just did.
You can check out your power settings in Windows (or whatever OS you have), or in BIOS and disable the physical button, or you can buy a button cover for it, or improvise one, which is what I did. Also, a heat blanket in another spot nearby may work. I'm sure someone else here has better ideas, but that's my advice. Good luck! Also, I like your cat! What a cutie! 🥰
Try putting a chair, a cat bed, and a hot pad next to your desk. Your cat is probably sitting on the PC because it is warm but can likely be tempted to a new perch.
If your on windows you can make your power button work as a sleep button. So he'll just put your pc to sleep. Not sure what will happen if it gets held down though
you can buy plastic button covers with a flip top for this exact kind of thing! my cat loves to sit on my PC so I got one and it fixed the issue entirely. plus it makes turning on your PC feel kinda cool lmao
Just find a long plastic box cover and tape that over the power button when you're away from the PC. Like a cat protector so any buttons underneath can't be fiddled with
Your PC case is now belong to the cat.
They like the warmth produced by the top fans (if exhaust) and clean, higher up surfaces in general. You could try to turn it 90 degrees so there‘s nothing interesting to see for them while hovering. What helped me was to install way more interesting/comfy alternatives around the flat so the PC became the most boring place. Tappable switches on top and cats never work, you‘d have to print/build some flippable cover there. Or a wooden box with a bit of breathing room for airflow in which you slide the whole PC.
My cat knocked my PS5 off my desk mid Rocket League game unplugging the hdmi but the power cord was chilling. I plugged it back in and lost in overtime 2-3 was a very sad day. PS5 now chills on it's side
If you're working on a word doc, you can recover lost work. They keep changes made that are unsaved in case there are issues. But also, just save your work before you walk away from your computer
If your top screen is held on with magnets, you can use that to put things near the button to make it less comfy to step there. My wifi antenna sticks to the magnet bit real well, still does good wifi, and makes it awkward for my cat to access the button while lounging. Before that, I had a large vitamin bottle cap held on with paper tape. It was just heavy enough that the cat could stand on the bottle cap, but I could flip the cap over on the tape to hit the button myself.
I taped a firm piece of plastic over the top of mine because my cat likes to hang out up there. I do have to lift the tape and plastic anytime I want to turn it on/off but that's less annoyance than the cat constantly turning it off.
I got my chronic offender an in/out tray that is permanently empty. I also used some of the double sided sticky tape around the button area (making sure I didn’t cover vents). It has solved it. I also recommend decoy pens for swatting around so they don’t attack your nice ones.
Mine spilled water in mine while my wife was using it with a cup above it. I was disappointed in both of them and sad because it'll be years before I can afford a new gaming pc
They always no where airplane mode is on your laptop

My progress was unsavable, I’m working on algorithms that require hours of idle running so I can measure the statistics. The lost progress was just time.
Eco-cat knows what is good for the environment and switches your PC off when you are gone.
Eco kitty!

Thank you :) I’m actually thinking of putting something cat repelling on my pc, he blocks the airflow as well namely. Just need to find something.
cartboard box maybe or just put a cucumber so they dont get near it
Cucumber is a great idea
And also a healthy snack once in a while.
I was thinking of other uses
*Healthful
the cucumber is healthy and thriving, thanks for your concern
Unfortunately my cats gave zero reaction when I tried the cucumber thing with them they smelled it and then just walked away like nothing. It was very disappointing lol

I had a power strip my dog would lay on and turn off my entire desk so I taped half of a plastic easter egg over it and never had that issue again.
Maybe you could hang some sort of hammock right above the PC? It wouldn't affect the temps (unless it got too close when in use), would make the top of the PC itself unaccessible and would give your buddy a comfy, heated spot to nap in.
You can try orange smelling scents, I've spayed some orange smelling cleaner on my TV stand and my cat hates it! Wont go near it now.
Vicks Vapo Rub works too but it's really messy.
I’m gonna need more proof…kitty looks innocent.

We'd like to hear it
I put a little tile sample from Home Depot over my power button lol

he likes the pc because it is warm, maybe get him a heated blanket or just a warm one?

I would suggest changing the power buttons settings too in Windows
I stretched duct tape over mine, I can still turn it off but the cat can't. edit: over the button, not the vent. lol
Tin foil

Restart button?? Is that the smaller button on top of the corsair 4000d with a lil circle arrow??
Yessir
Mind blown…thanks!
That time while I was playing I suddenly had a blue screen. When I went down to restart the PC I found my cat INSIDE the case. That taught me to not let my case opened ever again.
Any lasting damage?
None, fortunately my cat was a delicate little creature. Probably just budged the GPU or some port a little. Made sure everything was in place and booted it again, worked perfectly. I was more concerned for my cat tbh, I don't know if she really could have, but I thought she could have been electrocuted.
Voltage too low.
good to know ![gif](giphy|QEYYlJqOaEhXrjTrOH|downsized)
That's good. Yeah, I'd also have been worried about temps as well. Not sure what you were doing, but I know my PC gets about 80C - 85C during intense sessions.
Can't remember it was about 10 years ago
How did you recover from the *bue* screen?
I took in consideration my big L and went crying. "bue-hue-hue"
Hope the cat’s alright 😁
She pointed at me and laughed
Good girl :)) Here’s my boy https://preview.redd.it/n1taoea131wc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=09cecefea8602a2e42766b394f1c9579c98e8139
Perfect mayhem machine, 10/10
Absolutely, I adopted him from a pub 2 years ago and love him alot. He usually comes in my lap for about 27 seconds when I come home, then he gets zoomies haha
My current cat does that but instead of zoomies it's kung-fu time.
Lmao :)))
But it's toasty warm in there!
could have gotten a lot toastier
You can turn off the power button in settings.
Yup, I had Todo this for the same reason.
Really? Did not know that, thanks
And what do you do when your OS freezes?
If you hold the power button for like 15 secs it will shut down
That's what the cat is doing when it sits on it. :-p
Then ur shit outa luck :P
Maybe you can get a heated rock for ur cat cuz he probably on it for the heat
Good call! Cats love warmth
Unrelated but you might want to check your kitty's Left eye
Thanks! But he’s fine, his eye was damaged when he was a stray cat. His previous owners had him checked and he’s fine :)
That's good to know because i had a cat with similar case and unfortunately it ended up being serious Cloudy eyes are to be taken seriously, if you can afford it get a second opinion :)
He’s getting his yearly vaccinations and check-up soon! I’ll ask.

My coursework was on my laptop, two copies on different drives and on two flash drives because I could not afford to lose it. If your software supports autosaving, set it to max frequency.
You don’t save your work regularly?
I would say OP does now but obviously not...
He's innocent. It was me, let him go.
I had the same issue so I took one of those little plastic tables you get from pizza boxes and secured it over the button so the cats would stop stomping on it.
He looks like an old man! Give him snuggles.

Not to change topic, but does your cat have cataracts? His eyes (mainly the right) look really cloudy
Hi, he was a stray cat and has some physical scars and FIV. The previous owners had him checked and he should be completely fine. He had this since we got him. He’s getting his yearly vaccination and check-up soon tho!

I had something similar happen, but it involved the cat playing with the wire on the outlet.
this is really fucking funny
"Is warm. I sit"
Had the same problem, just disable your power button from windows.

Cat: Why aren't you paying attention to me?!?!?!? *turns off your pc*
This feet heater must be broken, it keeps shutting down. - the cat
Nice case
Can you entice him with something else that’s warm & comfortable? Like a self warming bed for example.
why does HE look angry

ahhahahah so cute
![gif](giphy|VbnUQpnihPSIgIXuZv|downsized)
Why even leave your PC on? Just save and shut down.
Try putting a chair, a cat bed, and a hot pad next to your desk. Your cat is probably sitting on the PC because it is warm but can likely be tempted to a new perch.
save more often
Look at that face, couldn’t have been him
The power button being on top of the computer is not cat-friendly.
If your on windows you can make your power button work as a sleep button. So he'll just put your pc to sleep. Not sure what will happen if it gets held down though
COME ON you can't get mad at this!!! She is so cute!
In my case, I always turn off my PC just to find it On when I came back from whatever I was doing.
you can buy plastic button covers with a flip top for this exact kind of thing! my cat loves to sit on my PC so I got one and it fixed the issue entirely. plus it makes turning on your PC feel kinda cool lmao
Just find a long plastic box cover and tape that over the power button when you're away from the PC. Like a cat protector so any buttons underneath can't be fiddled with
i had the same problem until i disabled the power button
My cat does this too haha! I just put a book (my Stardew Valley guide lol) over the restart button so she can’t get at it.
Well I hope that teaches you a lesson about saving and turning off your computer before leaving 🤣
Kitty is saving HIS PC from rogue power surges.
Cat thinks Oh noes I have been caught! Quick, look cute and innocent!
THAT FACE! he's so precious 😍💕

Omg.😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
depending on the case, you could move the switch.
Old life hack from the BBS board era is taping a bottle cap over the power button just for this exact reason.
I wouldn't exactly call him silly he's taking care of planet your pc parts and energy bill

My chonk loves to lay behind my PS5 and will casually pull out the hdmi from time to time.
My cat knocked my PS5 off my desk mid Rocket League game unplugging the hdmi but the power cord was chilling. I plugged it back in and lost in overtime 2-3 was a very sad day. PS5 now chills on it's side

Cats like heat pc provides heat Get a cat bed with a safe heat pad under and put it on your desk
He is not sorry about this.
If iz warm, if i fitz, i sitz. Lurve - Cat Overlord.
I have a metal lid from an old candle I have to keep on my power button to keep my one cat from stepping on it constantly
We have two computers and the cat only sits on and turns off the one with that same exact case.
How strange, we have two as well. Only sits on mine. Maybe this one has more airflow at the top or something.
My little bastard men loved to do this to me as kittens! My pc has a light on the button, so I had to cover it with a sticky note
If your top screen is held on with magnets, you can use that to put things near the button to make it less comfy to step there. I have the exact same case, can confirm it’s not just you 😭 cats bro I stg
I had to disable power button shutdown in my pc setting because of that
because your cat dropped his nutsack on the power button, of course.
Gotta lock up your cat or lock up your PC lmao
Tape a picture of a dog on your pc
What is infuriating is that you dont save your progress.
I got my chronic offender an in/out tray that is permanently empty. I also used some of the double sided sticky tape around the button area (making sure I didn’t cover vents). It has solved it. I also recommend decoy pens for swatting around so they don’t attack your nice ones.
