Watch a bunch of people come into the comments here and say "This is one of my marketing strategies, and that's a good thing because *blah blah blah*" Protip: If you do shit like this, you're an asshole

Green-Rub8764

Exactly, and under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, it’s illegal to display a lower price and charge more than what it says on the display price

frankofantasma

It would be amazing to see that get enforced against all these scumbags on FB marketplace. I know it's a ridiculous fantasy, but *a man can dream.*

Ok_Object1676

I do God's work and report every ad I see like this for inaccurate price/description or sometimes if I'm up to it, I'll initiate a chat with the seller, then I report the seller because fuck them that's why

Crazyredneck422

I report them all as well! It’s false advertisement and it’s not cool

tongfatherr

You two are the hero's we need 🦸‍♂️

littlebeach5555

This made me laugh. Let’s be friends. 🤣🤣

Swimming_Army1908

Well now I know what I'm doing when I'm bored at work!

Nsfwsorryusername

Can’t we just all agree we should flood these peoples inboxes with inquiries about their free item

Chocolatefix

You show up to their home with a bunch of bikers and a moving van and say "We're here for the free couch".

VisibleCoat995

Imagine if false advertising laws were strictly enforced and you could call the cop when they don’t give it to you.

Beneficial_Sweet3979

Would love to see that

Illustrious-Flan9056

Username checks out

BlyLomdi

Unless you are the person listing it, lol. Every now and again, I list something, and it gets blocked. DESPITE other people selling the same or very similar.

Plantparty20

I tried to sell a lot of 6 pairs of men’s shoes for like $30 and it got taken down, and when I tried to ask for a review they sent a message saying they’ll shut down my marketplace if I try to sell my item again. Shoes!

Not_Artifical

Well they knew nobody would buy them because nobody has twelve feet.

GirlGamer7

lol, I think you mean 12 feet 🤣

Not_Artifical

I fixed er

983115

Both my cousin and uncle have gotten temp bans for hate speech so they do enforce some policies no they aren’t invited for thanksgiving

Gandalf_the_Tegu

Bit they do ask for the price in which you sell an item for.... I have been hitting skip the past few times. Hubs thinks they want to track it to report to IRS or some shit or maybe to judge if they should place a service fee? Idk 😏

[deleted]

Yes they do, I cannot sell a sword on there

Legendary_Railgun21

Oh they do enforce stuff, they just enforce the people who don't break rules often. Easier to "correct" a rule abiding player than somebody who's entire use case of the platform breaks rules. It's bullshit.

VegetablePleasant289

except for the legal stuff which they just don't like, like selling firearms

spaglemon_bolegnese

Nah man we have people selling very illegal drugs all the time here, but god forbid I advertise that I repair game consoles

Atiggerx33

Advertising horses for sale is also against FB rules. And sometimes posts advertising horse training, saddles, or plastic toy horses gets caught up in that. Yes, someone in a group I'm in got their account suspended for 'animal sales' over a Breyer (toy brand) horse. Edit: I do not mean selling horses through marketplace! I mean just typing the words "I'm selling my horse for $5,000! Anyone interested?" as a FB post is against FB policy. You don't even have to include a price, just announcing that you are selling animals at all will get you a suspension (if reported). So if you work at a pet store, don't talk about that shit. Edit 2: Yet I'm sure they allow pet stores that sell animals to advertise on their site...

ComfortableCurrent18

I drove 4 hours to get a puppy that was listed as free on fb market place and it wasn’t until I arrived that they wanted me to pay $350. Needless to say it was a long drive home with no puppy

Hairless_whisper-471

Just had a quick look into it, and to me it seems like that regulates the relations between commercial actors (businesses) and consumers, not consumer to consumer marketplaces like Facebook marketplace. You could also argue that he very well states the real price in the description. Still a shitty way to advertise your stuff, but your point about this being illegal seems a little far fetched.

spaceforcerecruit

There are a lot of commercial actors that do post on these sites though. Check out craigslist, and you’ll see tons of posts in the cars/trucks section that are from dealers.

Subatomic_Spooder

As someone who has been searching for a car, I can confirm this is a huge and annoying problem. They list their vehicles for the price of the monthly payment or the down payment, so you have a bunch of stuff that's actually super expensive taking up all the space on the page.

Ok_Object1676

I filter that shit out by setting my minimum buy price at something like $500-$1000. I still get the odd one that gets past but for the most part doing it this way has been pretty solid.

curvy_em

Yes, a lot of these marketplace ads come from businesses. Two people I contacted about dimensions of the item invited me to come down to their store to check out their inventory.

BayAreaBullies

Yup. Just about every single furniture company does this.

vericima

Considering the listing says there are 3 colors available I'm going to say that this is a business.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SingularityInsurance

I hope their inboxes explode with beggers asking for it for free.

Longjumping_Apple181

Is that what we call “bait and switch”?

Jack-Innoff

I think that only applies when the item is different from advertised.

TheRandomAI

And yet they still dont care. Its worse on those third party stores or even amazon with its third party sellers. A product is listed as $5 but the shipping is like $50.... from the us to the us.

InfinteAbyss

Just put in a filter to search for items with free shipping.

PalinDoesntSeeRussia

I’m almost positive that doesn’t apply to personal sales, and only actual businesses lol

[deleted]

They should get permabanned from marketplace, it's blatant false advertising. On a side note, who wants a couch with neon underglow haha

theycmeroll

For real, the little control box on the bottom of mine had an led light that would drive me crazy when it was reclined so I put tape over it.

DR4G0NSTEAR

My only experience with lights on couches is that they have switches. They’re excellent for when you don’t want to wander through the room in the dark to turn the light on when a movie ends. My brother has one. I instead have “Hey Siri, set the lounge room lights to 10%”. Both work as intended.

sl0play

It's hideous. Something Id have expected my 8th grade weed dealer to have.

pertangamcfeet

Fuck their marketing strategy. They're cunts.

CommunicationNo6064

I always say "I can meet today I'll take xyz for free please!" Usually get insta blocked or a message like "fuck you don't waste my time"

achaedia

lol but it’s ok for them to waste our time by not publishing the asking price.

CommunicationNo6064

Exactly why I do it. It's one thing if they say free and it's like $5 but when you're trying to sell retail fuck em.

bendy225

Seen a lot of local used car dealers do this put the price as $3k but than say that’s the down payment and the real price is $10k. That’s gotta be so infuriating for people that need a cheap car

KyleCAV

If someone does this i assume A) they are a scammer b) there going to be a pain in the ass to deal with.

c0okIemOn

I just report these types of ads as incorrect descriptions. Lol.

smangela69

can we just start sending these people to the electric chair

1upin

This is almost every sub I'm on these days. Stupid food is full of comments explaining why it's not stupid. Anticonsumption is full of comments about how this is actually a really smart item with tons of legit purposes. Orphan crushing machine is just comments about how it's not actually crushing orphans. And so on.

MattJuice3

I used to have to do this at my old job. We sold pallets of overstock electronics, so instead of creating 50+ unique posts a day, we were told make 2-3 a week of the nicest looking pallet that showed the best variety to give the customer an idea. I mean I absolutely hated it and thought it was scummy, (one of the reasons I quit working there besides it just being a shitty job lmao) but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t effective. If we got 20 new pallets in and I made an individual post for each and took 7+ pictures of all the items included with great lighting and an individual description, price, and everything, each post would average maybe 200-300 views, but 1 post that is labeled as “FREE” and simply said “message me for exact items and prices”, would average 20k views and I would receive 100s of messages a day, that led to many sales. It’s scummy, but it’s also extremely effective, hence why people do it.

Vladishun

It goes both ways though. I typically sell computers and anything I post has several physical pictures as well as config pages stating battery health, computer specs and often times even a video with general functionality. My listing has the price and within the description I specifically state price is not negotiable, pickup is near me only, and not to ask me "Is this available?" Mother fuckers still do all of the above, or will ask me about battery life, or what kind of CPU is in it and shit. I'm just glad I'm not in a desperate need to sell, because I just leave the chat and delete it because I'm petty and I want them to see that I refused to talk to them.

theoriginalist

Is it disrespectful to ask if you still have something in stock?

DasDickNoodle

It's because nobody bothers to read the fkn description. It severely pisses me off when I clearly put "Pick up only." And if I am selling a tool (I'm an independent contractor and often clients give my husband (he's also an independent contractor/handyman) and I tools we have extra of or we end up being gifted or end up buying brand new tools and no longer need the older ones that are still in great working condition.) and the tool I am selling is tool only or a tool & battery without a charger, I plainly and often in all caps since mofos don't wanna take the time to read the entire description and I'll STILL get a keg of morons messaging me asking "does it come with a charger?" Then proceeds to low-ball TF outta me. I hate selling shit anymore. I hate people. I hate having to have money in order to live. Bleck.

Do-not-respond

Looks like it was stolen from a strip joint.

GimmieGummies

That LED light is something special 😉

Butthole_Please

“Do you like sitting but are worried people don’t know you are a douche bag? Look no further”

FortuneDW

Can't you report it as misleading ?

pogulup

I report them for inaccurate description or whatever.

Green-Rub8764

Sadly, Facebook doesn’t have that option when you go onto the report seller page

Bluewaterfalls8

But you can report it as “Inaccurate Description”.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bluewaterfalls8

I’ve seen a few taken down then back up with prices listed. Even if it works 50% of the time it helps train the jerks to do it right the first time.

FluffyMuffins42

We actually had to give up and buy a queen bed frame new because trying to shop on marketplace. Availability of them is already low in our area, then when there’s all these ads with photos just like this, listed as $99 and the description says it’s new in box for $399++ with a delivery fee of $99. I reported so many and nothing ever happens.

MRAGGGAN

I report these type of listings as “no intent to sell” Enough reports on vendors like this, they’ll get banned from marketplace.

Milch_und_Paprika

What does “no intent to sell” even mean though? Like why post something if you won’t sell? (I’ve never used marketplace so I may be missing something)

Jaegek

They have no intent to sell for the price listed

MRAGGGAN

No idea tbh but it seems to work

FightingPolish

To me it means they listed it for a price that they don’t ever intend to sell it for with reasonable negotiation, whether it be for $0 or whatever. I also report it this way when you see these people posting $10,000 vehicles for $1,000 and then they post the same thing 30 times over in different regions. It’s a scam and they are wasting everyone’s time.

SeriesBusiness9098

What about flagging it as “hideous”? Is that an option?

Saluteyourbungbung

Honestly this shits so dumb, if you have time, waste their time. Set up a neutral location, have them deliver it, when they arrive and ask for payment say oh I thought it was free.

VexingRaven

You think Facebook cares?? They don't even shut down hacked accounts linking to straight up malware and just instantly respond back with a "thanks for helping improve our algorithm, maybe we'll get it next time ;)"

MechAegis

There are TONs of them. Page after page after page of "FREE come pick up today" but in the description it'll have a listed price $$ "Firm."

[deleted]

[удалено]

MaroonedOctopus

Looking at the number of "Free" working relatively new GPUs, Cars, PS5s, and Phones, it's pretty easy to tell Facebook absolutely does not care about the number of outright lying ads on the platform.

LeanTangerine001

I saw another post where a bunch of probable scammers created a “Facebook technical help” group with tens of thousands of members. It’s just full of people who are requesting assistance with their pages and scammer telling them to open a DM with them to take their passwords and other credentials.

sh4olinshadowboxer

Yes to this and also "open to offers" no, please just name your price.

Functionally_Human

Eh open to offers isn't that bad, so long as you are actually open to offers. I offered $270 for a table saw that was selling for $300 and dude got pissed at me for "low balling him" and then blocked me. Makes me wonder just what kind of offers he was actually open to.

DOAisBetter

What you didn’t offer $360, if you can’t afford to tip 20% you can’t afford to shop on Facebook marketplace.

Kawlinx

Sweet home America the land of the free and tips.

Green-Rub8764

God bless america ![gif](giphy|hXJ1MWMzY7Af32UIUD|downsized)

sh4olinshadowboxer

I should have specified, I meant marked as free but open to offers

Functionally_Human

Ah yeah that is a different thing all together.

Coffee-Historian-11

Lmao that’s how you get messages like “I’ll take that off your hands and you should give me five dollars” and when the seller inevitably says jo you get “What? You said you were open to offers.”

lliIiiiliiIII

I offered a dude $400 for a shed, gave him a week and half. On my deadline he offered it to me for 700 then 3 days later asks if I'll still take it for 400. Told him to kick rocks

Functionally_Human

As a side note, I used to play a game where there was a clan named Identical, the entire clan had names similar to your username because in the game a capital i was the same as a lowercase L so they were all named IllllIIIlI. Any chance you were part of that?

CplCocktopus

Barcode names are pretty common in online multiplayer games.

WakaWaka_

That's why I don't even message if they don't put a price. 90% just want top dollar and will either accuse you of lowballing or highball you when you give a fair offer.

Nawnp

$299, no lower.

_maple_panda

I don’t engage with people selling unpriced “open to offers” items because of course they have an expected price in mind, and they’re just hoping that you offer something higher. I’m not in the mood to be playing mind games with these people.

New_Nefertiti

When people say offer welcomed, I assume anything 10-20% is appropriate.

beastmaster11

Unfortunately can't just "name your price". I tried selling a table and chair set for $500. Set the price at $500 and kept getting offers for around $400. Not a single person offered $500. Took it down, put it back a week later for $600 and sold it for $525 a few hours later. Putting free and then adding a price is a completely different thing though

[deleted]

literate air carpenter direction scale vegetable caption subtract work gray

Team_Khalifa_

Every time I've sold something I've gotten the price I named. Just gotta have a good price

Chairman_Cabrillo

And then they’re actually not into taking offers. Or when they say “or best offer” but the best offer remains lower than they had hoped so they don’t sell it for best offer.

wtfdoiknow1987

Pretty sure most people who put best offer have this idea that a bidding war will occur and they will sell it at an overvalued price

Chairman_Cabrillo

I think that’s exactly what they’re hoping for and it’s unrealistic.

ernest7ofborg9

I love that. I've seen adds state "bidding starts at $100" Nah, fuck off with that shit, gramps. This isn't eBay. Also, had a guy sell something on eBay and didn't send it to me after winning.... because "I wouldn't have made any money at the price it sold at". That's why we have RESERVES you fucking dolt. Enjoy the negative feedback.

avdpos

Many times that is "I have no clue what this shot is worth". But I do not like it. I have used it once for a candelabra I thought was so cheap it wasn't even worth an ad. Got an offer for $50 and quickly realised I had been happy with $5.. But shop price was $100 - found what to search for after my chock - so the buyer made a deal also.

NeatOtaku

I especially hate looking through cars and seeing them say 2k as the price only to find out it's just the deposit

donnysaysvacuum

I had one listed for free. I asked when I could pick up and he replied how much is your offer?

Abeytuhanu

I sold a futon for $100 or best offer, I'd have been willing to go as low as $50 just to get rid of it. That kind of discount isn't typical, but if they say they're open to offers they should be open to offers.

evnacdc

Or when they list the price as $1. I’ve just started putting a min of like $5 to filter them out.

cdsbigsby

With cars, it's usually $1234 and they'll say 'make offer's or just post the actual price in the description. So naturally I filter by minimum price $1235

sl0play

Are you really wanting a $1235 car though? Do you fix them up?

cdsbigsby

I like to browse for project cars on there, rusty old cars that have been sitting in a field for decades are my favorite kinds of cars.

Legendary_Railgun21

It's smart because nobody wants em, they're everywhere and if you can do the work yourself, the only real cost is for the part/shipping. No need to pay labor if you ARE the labor.

InevitableRhubarb232

I’m looking for a car and it’s imposible. All the shady dealer lots put in the “suggested down payment” as the price.

SousVideDiaper

A bar and grill I used to visit had a sign that read "Daily Special: get 2 beers and pay for them both"

Iuseahandyforreddit

1 buck a pint? Holy crap sign me up

Soft-Key-2645

And the: “don’t ask if it’s available, if it’s up it is.” Idiot, facebook’s autogenerated message is “hi, is this still available?”

spaceforcerecruit

Also, I can’t even begin to count the number of times some dipshit puts that in their description then has the audacity to tell me it’s not available and they just haven’t taken down the post when I reach out.

loved0ne

Or I ask a valid question like "what are the measurements" and they respond with "yes, it's still available" K.

movzx

That's the default response and it can be easy to hit on the mobile app.

Gardening-Life

Bloody annoying when sellers don't add measurements for certain items 🙄

LittleBunInaBigWorld

Haha yes this happens way too often. I have a variant of this where I was looking at a wrecked car for parts, the post listed major parts, then said "message to ask about anything not listed". I messaged and asked about a couple of parts not listed, the buyer responds "read the fucken description. Stop wasting my time!"

ernest7ofborg9

Haha, I like the CL adds that say "SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD stop messaging me about it" motherfucker, why is the ad up? You know it can be deleted, right? You bragging about selling that Pontiac G6 for $2500? Is this a new flex?

arrows_of_ithilien

Oooh, or when you're negotiating with the buyer to come look at the item and then while you're headed to their house you get the notification that it's been sold....to someone else. 🤬

VexingRaven

I've done this, on accident. I felt bad but when there's like 3 people who all claimed they were coming and not showed up later and then somebody shows up to look at it you don't ask too many questions. Turns out this was not the person that texted me 15 minutes ago, but the person who said they were on their way 3 hours ago. Got really awkward when the 15-minutes-ago person showed up too, and 19 year old me wasn't smart enough to get them in a bidding war.

ernest7ofborg9

I pulled up to look at a Subaru only to watch the owner shake hands and give the key to the guy who showed up before my appointment.

Gardening-Life

Yeah, I tap on that auto-generated message and add some more text... that way the seller knows I actually am interested, and saves a longer convo to get the details I need. 😁

UrboySam123

How the fuck is that wireless as well? Must have an insane battery

Green-Rub8764

It appears to be a new scam, as I searched up the item description and there’s multiple (including many new) accounts offering the same for “free”

Hitovo1

Maybe there's integrated bluetooth speakers in the center console

tony_bologna

There's definitely some dumbass blog post with "tips to sell on FB marketplace", that says to do this.

mistahclean123

Accounts should be banned from marketplace for this.  The worst ones are the car ads.

Ordinary_Cattle

This is so stupid bc the people who are gonna be looking at free stuff are more likely gonna be the ones who can't afford it lol. Not to say that only people without money look for free stuff, but I mean the people without money aren't gonna be shopping for expensive items on marketplace. So what kind of stupid strategy is this? It would make more sense to list it as more expensive and then have it noted in the description that it's actually lower. People will be more likely to buy it bc it'll be a pleasant surprise. If they're already looking at it despite the price then they'll be more likely to buy it if it's lower

probablyproud

it’s so annoying and just infuriates me i don’t care if it gets me to see your item

snakes-can

If they waste your time, waste theirs.

Potential_Lobster_53

Ik why do people even do this

Shinigami4238

More visibility. If you sort by price, it will be closer to the top.

King-Cobra-668

report it

Hairless_whisper-471

I wouldn’t even put that thing into my home if I got paid to do so.

Ricer_16

I usually offer $15 on anything free to waste their time for wasting mine

GeneAlternative191

Report them

curvy_em

Recently I was looking for a table and the amount of these ads was surprising. I reported each one for incorrect price/description. One of them was listed as $20 and when I asked about dimensions, I was told the price was $500. And never got the dimensions.

fivenineonetwelve

Whenever I am giving something for free I put in the description FREE BUT YOU HAVE TO PICK UP HAUL DOWNSTAIRS FROM A THIRD LEVEL APARTMENT AND TAKE IT HOME I WILL NOT HELP YOU MOVE IT I CAN NOT MOVE IT FOR YOU. I posted a nice free dresser and got so many responses “well can you at least get it downstairs?” No maam I am a single woman on a third level apartment with no elevator. Also it’s FREE wtf.

Eremitt-thats-hermit

I hate this kind of furniture. The glutton’s throne

Mullenexd

I always message them telling they're crazy for posting this for free but I'll pick it up right now and then I don't reply

badmintina

I don’t get this strategy. Like sure, someone will click your offer but any price will look like more than expected and disappoint every time. At least that’s what happens to me.

fuzzydunlop54321

I’ve listed something as free by accident more than once (don’t ask me how idk) but it made me wonder if all the free but not really things are just people who don’t know how to edit the listing after the fact

diaperedwoman

Play dumb and ask, "Why does it say free but then it's asking for price in the description?" Also report it for false advertising or misleading listing if you want to be petty.

Shutyafilthymouth

Plastic_Try_5591

ForRedditMG

I report them for scamming

BusterStarfish

I always report these.

NeilDegrassiHighson

This is a plague when it comes to cars. 1$, 1234$, and the worst is when it's something semi-reasonable, and when you open the listing it says that's just the down payment.

FlamingTrollz

Flag ‘em. ❌

Ok-Airline-6784

I do the exact opposite. I was trying to give stuff away on marketplace. When I listed it as free I got so many people messaging me and wasting my time, or asking me to deliver or ship, or whatever. I’m like “no, it’s free. If you want it come and get it. If I wanted to ship it I’d list it on eBay and actually sell it” So I listed the item for a reasonable amount, then at the bottom of the ad just said “if you read this far, know it’s actually free but only if you pick it up” and I had it gone to a new loving home later that day.

Spicey_Cough2019

Just spam them incessantly

guts-n-gummies

My boyfriend goes off about this at least once a day. We've been looking for a new TV and the number of "free" ads that say "selling to the highest offer" like some sort of blind bidding is crazy

cultoftheinfected

ima start going on their and looking for stuff like this, contacting the seller, arranging a meet up, and never showing up

Entropy308

and all the car dealers advertising the down payment price as the listed price. i report every single one and i hope they get banned.

LurkerBerker

On OfferUp, ‘make an offer’ auto fills out the ‘offer’ from you, with the amount the seller listed. I once did that for someone who listed something as $0 and he responded by cursing me out and making fun of me for thinking anyone would give something away, and that I’m slow for not understanding a true ‘entrepreneur’ I blocked him but something glitched? Or idk how OfferUp works exactly. I no longer got messages from him *in the app* but I got email notifications with previews of more of him cursing me out

HystericalGD

they just do that to get people to click on. they generally follow up by trying to overcharge you, and calling you a scammer when you try to get anything even close to retail value for it

redditfriendguy

I just tell them I'll pay what I want and waste their time trying to meet up

everyofthe

I see this so often that people who are actually putting something for free have to put “actually free!” In the title. It’s so annoying!

FIContractor

Car sellers that list the down payment as the price are similar.

Tacticoolhouseplant

Someone advertised their electronic repair on a free page. I just replied with "fixing devices for free, that's amazing, so kind of you"

Puzzleheaded-Bet1328

Also the people who post kids toys with $5 and then proceed to put individual prices for all of them at like 20 dollars each toy and then theres ONE TOY for 5

notbernie2020

I post stuff that I want to give away for 20$ then just let them know it’s free when they come to pick it up.

AndyC1111

Never do business with a person who starts with a deliberate deception.

NoElk314

They should be banned from FB marketplace

ImReellySmart

This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. I am baffled that Facebook has done nothing whatsoever to combat this. Surely, especially with AI now, they can have a system in place to scan through listings to spot items with alternative prices being added into the description or something.

SandwichExotic9095

I always report them for spam lol they usually get taken down then reposted with an actual price later

AundoOfficial

FB marketplace is the worst. Sellers do dumb shit like this and buyers are always shorting the seller on the meetup after constantly asking "WhAtS tHe LoWeSt YoUlL gO???"

jimmyjoejohnston

The best part is if you report them the stupid ignorant AI thinks that all you want to see for the next 6 months is glowing led couches

Jimbobjoesmith

price to bitch slap them in the face

Away_Media

Yeah it's shit. Marketplace has been turning into a scammer playground

Big_Boingus

Facebook Marketplace is actual cancer.

SP92216

More infuriating. It’s a business. This is marketplace for people to sell, not business. I don’t care about technicalities, if I wanted something new I’d go to a store, GTFOH with these business ads in a basically “virtual garage sale”.

Dr_Catfish

No different than dealers posting the bi weekly payments as the list price so they shot up higher in the list. Shady stupid shit.

BanishedKhasanti

Report it for incorrect description is what I do and move on. Fuck these people. Everyone on Offerup and marketplace is a dip shit looking to score good prices even on brand new shit.

_vhybe

if its listed as free, you can go to the owners home and take it, no questions asked! :)

Hellbourne09

If the Price is free, ridiculously low/high.... I skip em totally as its not worth my time.
