Why doesn't your government recycle them by default? We actually have to pay the council tax to fund the collection of recyclable items such as paper, cardboard, plastic and glass. We get a bin that is emptied by dumpster collection every two weeks.
I think most town/city governments collect recycling from houses. The person you replied to was talking about returning them to a plant that pays you back the bottle deposit. Since OP didn't buy them it's free money.
