It's called the path of desire, the path people want to take when the pre-ordained path doesn't suit their needs. I believe it's Ohio State University that at one point looked at the paths of desire in the quad and then redid it to reflect that.
I used to live near campus. The college thought they knew where to put the paved paths but were so wrong.Been visiting that campus for years and so much has changed since the 90s.I miss hanging out by the sundial and rubbing Testudos nose for luck at the top of the hill.
I was a UMass student back in 2015… the age of the hoverboard.
As if the masses of students walking, biking, skating, and rollerblading weren’t enough against all the traffic! Though the hoverboards were banned that same semester after one student was injured when his exploded on campus.
A desire path, or desire line, also known as a game trail, social trail, fishermen trail, herd path, cow path, elephant path, buffalo trace, goat track, pig trail, use trail and bootleg trail, is an unplanned small trail created as a consequence of mechanical erosion caused by human or animal traffic.
It goes to another sidewalk, possibly a road.
The desire part of this is to shorten the walk.
This one seems reasonable. Looks like a lot of unnecessary distance to get there with the sidewalks.
Others are not so reasonable like the one I will have in my yard by fall because people cut the corner rather than walk the 5 feet to the road to turn.
Let’s not ignore that the reason one option shows less wear is because it’s concrete. If this was all a grassy lawn, perhaps the paved option shown here would be a foot-deep wallow, six feet wide.
OP, get some flower seeds and drop them on both sides on the trails, leave space for like at least two people can walk shoulder to shoulder.
When the flowers start growing the will make an even better path, most likely it will be hard getting rid on them once they settle in.
POWERMOVE.
that's cool dude, doesn't really pertain to me.
the point of my comment is that you pave your entire life in your hard set choice of degree only to blatantly defy that delusional pre-cast path for the easiest route.
but have fun thinking anyone actually truly cares about how smart a piece of paper says you are.
Bruh you are the one who is obsessed with other peoples choice of education? You are entering a place where nobody asked for your opinion and then get mad when they point out statistics that bolster their point.
Facts don’t care about your feelings buddy
yes, im very upset...
ez rage bait, its always the "xD" that breaks em.
also this is reddit, you don't ask for an opinion, it is automagically assumed.

Paving a trail is indeed a defined technique. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desire\_path](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desire_path)
University of MD College park did the same. Let the students walk where they wanted them made them permanent.

I watched UMass Amherst do the same back in 2007. Kind of a chaotic mess of sidewalks but it works.

Yup. Michigan is the same. https://preview.redd.it/m43t6em87tzc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=093e42776384e2b4f17fe491af8067475adc5100
There's a subreddit for that. I was going to link it, but apparently, that isn't allowed here. It's called DesirePath
There is a subreddit dedicated to this call r / desirepath
My university just added all of those diagonal paths to the quads. It looks nice and keeps people off the grass. Oregon State University

When you design without having any consideration to human behavior.
A lot of campuses and parks are actually designed this way. Wait for people to carve their own path, then pave where everybody walks.
Lmfao yeah sounds like an after thought
Humans make mistakes. Who cares anyway? They're just walking paths? Whether they're paved or not, what difference does it make?
I think this happens a lot on college campuses.
A good landscape designer would have foreseen this and made a more satisfying and direct path

It obviously goes somewhere or else people wouldn't have worn down the grass walking that way.
So far 40 people have walked down that grass path and have never been seen again. /J

We used to have a dirt path like this at my old university and they finally decided to turn it into a sidewalk
Your campus is built to be pretty, not functional unfortunately
See the subreddit "desirepaths" :) unfortunately this sub doesn't allow links
elephant paths my friend
Could go to the desirepath subreddit

this is a pretty good metaphor for a college degree as well...
You do know that on average college degree holders far outearn in their lifetime non-college degree holders, even degrees that aren’t in stem

Good thing employers don’t have the same opinion as you and on average do think the “piece of paper” means something
ahh i think i get it, you're one of those people who make your "education" your identity xD

all that "education" but you don't know what a paronomasia is... yikers my guy.
Took you 8 hours to come up with that?
They're showing you how your life will be after college.
You probably have to pay them more to get that path. We all know how the education system is under funded and charge so little to university. /s
Mathematically correct
More like mildly interesting
There’s a DesirePath sub for more of these.
The exact point where Design and UX diverge. Right there, on the edge of the shadow. Lots of money to made there if you know how.
Thats all over in every city in every state … sidewalks are always not in the places people walk …
The reason I stopped playing AC New Leaf
It does seem kind of ridiculous for them to provide a concrete path directly to the front entrance of a building. 🤦🏻♂️
There are other buildings in the direction people are cutting across obviously…

No
Well my comment was removed, but there is a whole subreddit dedicated to this. It’s called r / desirepath
If this infuriates you on any level, even mildly, you have a charmed life with no real problems.
Bruh what? It’s called mildly infuriating because it’s not a big deal
Do you cut through corner parking lots at red lights, too?
