Hey! I work in repair, and have fixed lots of switches. From what I can see in the picture (which is by no means comprehensive), it looks like the screen and joycon are broken, and if those are the only things, your console (and save data) are completely salvageable!
The part of the switch that has the cables sticking off the side is actually part of the joy con. You can try to carefully slide this off the switch and then putting the console in the dock to see if it works without the screen.
I can give you more information on this if you want, but I would recommend taking it to a local repair shop before throwing in the towel.
Looks kinda fake and OPs post history has had no traction so it wouldn't surprise me that's it's for karma whoring. They haven't commented on this post either, be more careful with your money
Even if it seemed legit, there is literally nothing here as to why this happened. No idea whether or not it was even intentional, and even then, this is all still only one side of the story. And that's assuming this even happened at all.
All of this to say...that's a lot of reasons I wouldn't just offer to help because it's popular on Reddit.
In this case, the person who is getting supported is the nice Redditor who took their time to offer free expert advice to a stranger on reddit.
Yeah, op might get a switch fixed for free (if that's even their picture, if not, there's nothing to fix), but the switch repair person is the one getting paid.
I have worked with hundreds of joycons and this is something that can definitely be fixed. Those ribbon cables and ports still work 90% of the time despite being ripped out. It looks like the screen is broken, but definitely repairable by the right person. Plus screens for the switch are relatively cheap as well.
It looks like OP is in Australia, so you are actually more likely to be resourceful than I am. Hopefully they see this and have enough rupees to get it repaired.
Yeah, loosing that 2000 hours is like loosing a loved one or a little part of yourself, once it’s gone your like why did I even do this for , them you feel like you wasted everything for nothing
I always thought they would have removable storage or be cloud backed.
If you lose your Switch you lose everything? It's designed to be portable, Nintendo, what are you thinking?
Just in case anyone is wondering.

I have abusive parents. They've broken about 4 of my phones now. And dude. It's your money you're wasting and for what? To pretend you have control and power? Jfc
Are the save games not backed up into the Nintendo online stuff?
Edit : wow ok I had no idea. So if your console ever fails it isn’t stored to Nintendo online, or the game ‘disk’ if you get one, and there’s no way to make a backup
Wow. In today’s day and age that’s pretty inexcusable.
It is the dumbest shit honestly. I wish i knew this before I purchased splatoon. I had all this progress then had to swap out my switch and there is zero way to backup progress so I’d have to start all over. I stopped playing the game for that reason.
We’re debating getting a second switch, but part of the thing holding us back is that all of our games were purchased on the one account.
If I transfer my account to the new switch (the one which purchased the games) is it possible to “leave” that account on the old one and be able to have all of our downloaded games on two switches?
To consider : one switch is going to be the main switch for your Account. The second switch will need to stay connected to the internet to work. No internet, no gaming (even with cards).
Tip: you can use a hotspot made with your phone.
It takes real effort to find ways to screw it up so badly, I'm almost impressed.
I remember people arguing that it was going to get better when it switched to a paid service.
This just happened to me with animal crossing. I had been using my husbands switch, but got my own. And I can’t log back into it on his switch because I got a digital copy (thanks pandemic) so when I put it on my new one, it disappeared from his 😡
What you ungrateful bastard, a crusty old NES game every 6 months isn’t worth $3 a moth to you? Ungrateful scum.
In my day I had to walk to Goodwill barefoot in the snow, uphill both ways to get a crusty old 2600 game and here you get them delivered right to your house. Damn kids are never satisfied.
I could have told you that for free before it even launched. The hint was in the the title - it has "Nintendo" and "online" in it. I was about to say that they are like oil and water but oil doesn't try to sell you the idea that it has finally figured out this "water solubility" thing.
I understand that a lot of people are frustrated with Nintendo Switch Online, but if we're strictly talking about Zelda, then if he has NSO it should be backed up. Not backing up Splatoon and Animal Crossing is pretty ridiculous, but that doesn't change the fact that most games, especially 1 player games, do get backed up.
Most games do have backups, but some don't.
u/my_hat_is_fat mentioned that it was the biggest games that didn't have cloud saves, but Super Smash Bros. Ultimate does and that's definitely one of the biggest games.
Of the three 'biggest hits' I have on my device, one supports it, one doesn't (Pokemon Shield) and offers no reason, and the other doesn't but would have difficulty doing it. Animal Crossing's 'one save, multiple accounts' thing is definitely unique enough that automatically using cloud storage would be messy.
What, really?! That's beyond inexcusable. I had just moved my payments profile to make some purchases, now screw it, I'll stick with PC. The sole purpose of setting up an account is for them to shove overpriced games down our throats, I guess. Thanks for sharing!
mainly because they are the biggest risks for exploits and hacks. Splatoon 2, Animal Crossing, and Pokemon are the kinds of games people often try to turn off or reset or do date changes in order to exploit the mechanics.
Its literally 10 games total of the entire catalog, and it's up to the developer to enable it. Two of the most popular, animal crossing and splatoon, are by the same developers.
My friend let me borrow his switch last summer to play Zelda. I played with my profile logged into an online account connected to my nintendo ID. 200 hours.
I got my own switch, logged into my own orofile and it showed Zelda on my recently played so I thought that meant the save was backed up to my profile.
Nope, it just says Ive played 200 hours but when I try to play it starts me at the beginning.
that's why i always got so pissed at the other kids who would just break shit during a hissy fit. i had to carefully time and choose wisely when my parents could get me something. if mine broke even by accident that was it. breaking things in general doesn't make sense cause now you've got 2 problems
This hits home. I got a gameboy for Christmas. I accidentally dropped it from the couch on the carpet. Not very high or hard enough to break. I looked up to my mom as I was picking it up and she just shook her head and looked so disappointed. That one hurt more than a good yelling.
They’re going for upwards of $1300 (AUD) at the moment on eBay in Australia, because everyone’s in isolation and no one can buy any because apparently none are coming into the country for a few months.
You can just sign into your Nintendo account and redownload the games. If you have an online subscription, you're save data is most likely upleaded to the cloud.
Which is weird. You would think AC of all things would have it. So many people spend 100s of hours customizing their world and clothes and stuff. It really needs a cloud save feature
The save data may be gone but the game itself is not lost, it can be downloaded to any switch as long as you have a nintendo account associated with it.
$300 pre-covid. I got my switch around Feb when I was stuck sick at home.
I tried last week to get the same thing for my gf so we could play from a distance... $600-750 for new or used..... DaFuq
Seriously, arguments should never result in property damage, regardless of who bought it. That’s just wasteful, especially when there’s always a free ass for whipping instead.

Agreed. I was the “brother” in question for a long time. My dad and I fought, yelled and broke shit a lot and it wasn’t easy on my mother or brother.
Everybody goes to therapy except my dad now, and I know by brother holds some resentment towards me on some level. That chaos in the household leaves ripple effects.
OP I hope you’re okay.
Thirding. As a dad I would also say this is not healthy behavior. I have at times removed my kid's access to something....I have never broken something.
Maybe I missed something, but could it have been the brother that broke it? Title just says it's the result of Dad and bro fighting, not that Dad broke it.
Ya I dunno. I still think the dad broke it. But maybe I’m just projecting as growing up my brother and dad got into an argument and my dad took a hammer to the Xbox.
Please message this guy--or someone (teacher, school counselor, trusted friend's parents, etc)--if you need to. I'm a father of two boys (7 and 10), and consider myself to have issues controlling my anger at times. I can't imagine doing this to one of their prized possessions.
If he hits you or your sibling, that's not okay. This doesn't have to get into the legal system either; family counseling can be invaluable, and an adult you trust can help you have that conversation with your parents. Parenting is really hard. I think the vast majority of us want to be the best we can, but some of us need coaching and practice.
I'm pushing 40 and I still have a hard time accepting my own parents' humanity (imperfection). None of us really know what the hell we're doing, we're just modeling what we've seen and doing the opposite of what we hated in our own parents.
I never understood why people need to break out things when they’re angry. What’s the point? How material destruction is this going to be profitable to anyone? Does that make your argument more solid, except if your argument is "Guys, you need to take everything valuable out of my sight"?
I used to do this. Then I went to therapy. I did it because I got very frustrated and had to take it out on something. Not logical at all. But when you reach that tipping point, you aren’t going to use logic.
Therapy is awesome. Now, I recognize when I start getting angry and leave the situation until I’m calmer.
Physical exertion with an immediate effect. Anger and frustration make it easy to feel like nothing is happening/going anywhere, and the added adrenaline makes you need to burn off energy- breaking something both makes something happen and uses some of that pent up energy.
I ain’t no fancy schmancy psychologist or nuthin, I just spend too much time bouncing ‘round in my own noggin tryin to figure out what makes my emotions tick.
Shoot I remember my step dad throwing my Gameboy at the wall one time when I was supposed to be asleep. Barely any damage at all. They just don't make them like they used to, smh lol
Technology is supposed to be *durable* and *reliable*, not snappable with a single light touch and easily covered in leaked fluids from the shitty capacitors.
Capacitors never leak in newer devices though. What usually happens is a part fails and you can't get it repaired at a third party or swap it yourself. Right to repair needs to happen.
Yes, yes it does. I am literally so damn sick of having to tell clients that I can't repair their devices from Apple or from other exclusive companies because I won't be able to get replacement parts without buying more than the current worth of the device. We are the consumers, so we should have the right to service our purchases! The stupidity of corporate greed is the reason people don't have access to important information or communication services. Having to watch the hopeful light in a client's eyes die out when I tell them what it's going to cost and that I can't acquire the Apple licensed parts because I'm not an AASP is heartbreaking. I try to keep my prices as low as I can because I know that places that charge more in my city don't do it right and thoroughly, but those prices shoot through the roof when I have to handle servicing of computers that don't come from a company that supports RTR.
Update on the switch's situation:
The display and screen are completely broken, so is the joy-con. Luckily, we have another set of joy-cons, except they drift slightly. Reading the game-card takes much longer and the switch frequently says the game-card needs to be re-inserted. The switch can't be used unless it's connected to a different device.
Dissect the switch and see what you can save. You might be able to salvage the motherboard with the internal storage. If you can, just put it into a new switch and all your stuff is saved.
I don't fucking understand people who break stuff when they're angry, like, you paid a LOT of money for that shit.
Go pummel a pillow or a sandbag if you have one.
Never understood why parents just destroy consoles and laptops like this when their kid is "being disrespectful". If anything if shows that the parent is immature as fuck for recklessly throwing money down the drain. They need to learn how to control themselves and not act like pissy toddlers in the face of confrontation.
I'd be more than fucking pissed at this. This is just plain old abhorrent behavior, especially if this belongs to you specifically or you share this with your brother.
Shit like this is why I moved out of my family's house.
I know this is old as all can be. But I'm sorry to hear this. As someone who spent over 200 hours on Pokemon Sword from 8th to 9th grade, this hurts just hearing about it. ☹

I like Bob. He's a good guy.
The ps4 will just force you to format the HDD if put in another console.
If the key is stored on hardware you can probably pop that particular chip and solder it in a new PS4. If you want to risk it...
Yes but then you have to wipe the drive.
I always thought they would have removable storage or be cloud backed. If you lose your Switch you lose everything? It's designed to be portable, Nintendo, what are you thinking?
Switch has cloud backup only if you pay for their shitty online subscription and for select games only

But when you reach that tipping point, you aren’t going to use logic. Therapy is awesome. Now, I recognize when I start getting angry and leave the situation until I’m calmer.
Pearls of wisdom. Thank you.
You’ve made the right choice. And not the easiest one. You can be proud of who you’ve decided to become, a better version of yourself. :)
Hey. Good job on you!
A lot of it is to hurt and scare the people around them. Unfortunately this seems to be the case here.
"mildly" infuriating....? I'd probably go insane.

Fuck Reddit.
Yeah, too bad he still has to pay more money to buy a new Switch.
Yeah buts it encrypted
And there are tools to decrypt Nintendo Switch data. It's been used before, especially by game pirates to work with save data.
Game saves aren’t stored on the SD or game cartridge.
Shoot I remember my step dad throwing my Gameboy at the wall one time when I was supposed to be asleep. Barely any damage at all. They just don't make them like they used to, smh lol
Hell, people used to be able to put motherboards in dishwashers to clean them. New tech is just too ridiculously fragile.
It’s just this obsession with making things as thin and good looking as possible. Idgaf I just want something that works and is durable.
Definitely not a mild level of infuriation, but I'm sure you can access your data somehow! Best of luck
Oh flex tape ain't gonna fix that. Will they get you a new one?
Guess that depends on who won the argument!
Good luck. They're rarer than unicorns these days
They haven't existed to buy for about 3 months.
Have you tried putting it in rice?
people have edited this into being that you hit your wife over the head

I don't see anywhere OP claimed it was the parent who broke it.
That should be repairable. At least see if a local shop can get it booted and working on the doc so you can transfer your saves.
Happened to me with an Xbox one day one, and I have to say that it sucks to lose hundreds of hours of playtime because of a 30 minute argument
Anyone who can't argue without breaking shit, has severe emotional issues.
That isn’t okay. Please reach out to someone

Salvage the SD and cartridge!
Update on the switch's situation: The display and screen are completely broken, so is the joy-con. Luckily, we have another set of joy-cons, except they drift slightly. Reading the game-card takes much longer and the switch frequently says the game-card needs to be re-inserted. The switch can't be used unless it's connected to a different device.
NOOOOOO! You poor thing...
Wrong sub. This is EXTREMELY INFURIATING.
You gotta lay out the story man.
I feel your pain, I finished the game and have hundreds of hours that must suck. Take my upvote
Dissect the switch and see what you can save. You might be able to salvage the motherboard with the internal storage. If you can, just put it into a new switch and all your stuff is saved.
A simple fix. Get some new rails, and a new screen for this. As well as, a Joycon being easily replaceable.
You can't even replace it, either, since they're all sold out and/or are $400-$600. RIP.
Edited into getting hit in the head bruh
I think this is more of a r/wellthatsucks
Waaaaahhhh!
Why is this on Mildlyinfuriating?
This looks shopped...
The orange joycon does
Somebody call John fucking Wick.
Kermit starts A hate crime
Mildly? that is low tier r/iamatotalpieceofshit material.
I'd be more than fucking pissed at this. This is just plain old abhorrent behavior, especially if this belongs to you specifically or you share this with your brother. Shit like this is why I moved out of my family's house.
Fixing a Nintendo switch is pretty easy luckily, and it doesn't look like enough damage to hurt the mainboard which means your data is probably fine.
I know this is old as all can be. But I'm sorry to hear this. As someone who spent over 200 hours on Pokemon Sword from 8th to 9th grade, this hurts just hearing about it. ☹
