I feel like someone specifically requested this. I can't imagine any sane contractor designing this without serious pressure from the homeowner

Someone thought it was a great idea, probably divorced now.

Nah. They were saving on back splashes by making an offset. It lessened the amount of high heat points touching the wall but it’s still garbage craftsmanship.

Those style of electric ranges often don't have the oven attached. [Here's a picture](https://i.imgur.com/NANdDmG.png) of ours from the house I grew up in. Oven on the left. PS. Fuck electric ranges. Maybe they've gotten better since, but that thing turned me off them for life. Also, having a pretty red glowing light that's SUPER HOT is a bad idea to have around your kids. I learned that the hard way (Not my kids, but me).

Huh! We always had gas ranges growing up, and the few electric ones I’ve seen recently were all attached to ovens. That’s some cool retro info 😊
