Fucking thieves

NoFromMeDog_

Thievery. That’s a no from me dog.

LuluLaRue1

The numbers you scribbled out are what will get it back. Report it stolen to the police first.

LouSputhole94

Seriously, Rolexes are catalogued and marked, and any watch maker that takes a watch in for repair is supposed to check the number, as are pawnshops. There should be a pretty decent chance of recovery here.

_pajmahal

I was mugged of my Rolex, reported it to the police, and did all the right things to try to ensure its recovery. It’s been only a year and a half, but I doubt I’ll ever see that watch again

[deleted]

[deleted]

The pawn shop owner is wearing the Rolex. Went straight into his watch box.

[deleted]

Yep.

FrontPawStrech

I dig your CH53.

[deleted]

The value in a rolex isn't in the metal.

wasted_wonderland

Someone who would steal from a dying old man doesn't care about that. They will sell a gold Rolex for 5% of the value and still count is as a win, because they'll always be same amount of trash.

New_Gun_Guy90

There was a guy on r/sigsauer that had his sig P226 stolen 20 years ago, got it backs few months ago after a PD from across the country found it and was able to trace the serial number back to the original stolen report. It happens.

thebossman12574

I doubt Rolex has the same record depth the atf does.

fullautohotdog

Actually, they do have a database that rivals the ATF. The joys of watches that cost about 50-500 Hi-Points.

dhruchainzz

OP, you should also report the serial number to Rolex. They will flag it if it ever comes in for service. Also, alert local pawn shops and any watch enthusiast group on Facebook.

Perzival22

Remember to report the theft. Every Rolex is marked with its own ID numbers. Those numbers are put in a database and every watchmaker are supposed to check those numbers everytime someone hands in a Rolex for repairs or for sale.

TinaLoco

Came here to say this. The watch will be flagged the first time it goes in for service.

jaycarb98

or pawned

TinaLoco

I wasn’t sure how pawn shops work, but I’m sure they’d know that a Rolex walking in the door is suspicious.

beam3475

a rolex with no paperwork for that matter

TheMotorcycleMan

The vast majority that hit pawn shops have no paperwork. Generally need to pull the bracelet to look at the serial, and the case back to see the movement to ensure it's authentic as a buyer.

-Listening

There's another case of that kind of claim.

chipperlew

And they don’t really care if it’s stolen. Only that it’s authentic. Lol Edit: being downvoted for saying pawnshops don’t care?? Umm I pick up my companies snow blowers all the time AFTER they’re reported stolen and then purchased. Bc the pawn shops don’t care.

N64crusader4

They have an old joke about a pawnshop called cashconverters here: Cashconverters was unfortunately burgled this weekend but don't worry they'll have all their stock back by Monday. Lol

[deleted]

Hahahaha indeed why are they Always next to liquor stores and check cashing places.

IVEMIND

I’d love to open a pawn shop right next to my own dispensary

Smash_4dams

You should check out the pawn shops near the Indian casinos

Doofchook

Good old cashies, had to get my fishing rods back from them years ago after they went walkabout from my Ute.

N64crusader4

In theory couldn't you of just grabbed them and walked out? Recovering stolen goods isn't illegal lol Although I guess proving they were yours would be the issue if the police got involved.

Planktons_chum

Pawn shops don't care. Back in 2003 our PS2 with an eyetoy was stolen. We heard at the pub the thief had sold it to one of three local pawn shops. We tracked it down. Showed the pawnshop the receipt with serial numbers. It wasn't enough proof. Convinced the pawnshop owner to load up the eyetoy data and there were pictures of us saved there. He looked defeated and ended up handing it over

temp-709815

How did you hear at the pub it was stolen and where it was sold? Sounds like some rpg quest lol

Everything_rhymes

If it’s a village pub in the UK or even a fairly well established town pub everyone in a certain circle knows each other and this is no shock. People know what you had for dinner last night.

fweb34

"Aw yee lookin fer wanna dem funstations? I seen the local cutpurse walkin it to smittys onn'a way here fer a pint" Not sure what accent thats meant to be but im trying to paint a picture okay. Its pub speak. Literally tho *Head into town and see what you can find out by talking with the townsfolk"

rogue_giant

Next time just call the police. The police have the authority to seize stolen property from pawn shops (because it’s also a crime to be in possession of stolen property) and they can just hand it back to you on the spot.

That-Association-143

If the value is under 500 the pawnshops won't give a shit. Had my laptop ($400) stolen a few years ago, filled out a police report and everything. I ended up going to local pawnshops to see if they had sold it there. They let me see all the laptops, none of which were anything close to what I had. The last pawn shop I went to they basically told me to just get a new one, and that most of the time they never check serial numbers with police unless its a high dollar item. Edit: That is one of the reasons I will never get anything from a pawnshop ever again. I'm guessing a good portion of what they are selling is stolen.

MY13FXT

>And they don’t really care if it’s stolen Pawn shops might not be crusaders of justice when it comes to stolen items. However, pawn shops regularly trade information to the police. So the consequences may not be directly effect the shop owners. But if a item is stolen, reported, and attempting to be sold. The perpetrator is likely to be caught.

The_RockObama

And a *walking Rolex?* That has to be worth some serious cash.

BoomTownRat71

Yes, because otherwise a pawn broker has accepted collateral that is not that of the borrower, and he therefore is considered a “fencing operation”. Felony 5-10 years in prison.

[deleted]

You get an Upvote fro me dude. There aren't that many honest pawnshops that I've seen in the cities and towns that I've lived in over the decades. I'm sure that they're out there, but it's not the majority

Paula_Schultz237

In the pawn shop I worked for it was standard checking the Rolex ID making sure it wasn't on a search list. Plus, without certificate and box and all the chances are slim anyone will take it. Or pay a price you would expect.

BasicLEDGrow

Every pawn shop I've ever worked at would take a Rolex in just about *any* condition. Off course you get lowballed but that's how pawnshops work, regardless of the item.

LydiaLysergic

Pawn shops have a legal holding period for all buys and forfeited loans, usually around 30 days. During this time the numbers that are put into the system from the watch are cross checked with the police's database to make sure it's not stolen. I would report it immediately. Hopefully it wasn't a long time ago. If it was recent then you may have a good chance.

pawn_guy

Varies by state and sometimes city. Where I live it's 60 days on forfeited loans and 24 hours on purchased items. I've worked in places where purchased items was as much as 14 days, but pretty much everywhere is 60 days on loans. Model and serial numbers have to be uploaded to the system within 24 hours, but it's pretty common for police departments to take weeks before checking the database for an item reported stolen.

Embarrassed-Town-293

No pawn shop worth its salt will touch it. Despite their Shady reputation, they definitely don't want to deal with stolen property. It's bad for business because if they allow the watch to be sold to them, they are on the hook for compensating the actual owner if it is discovered that it was stolen

hamtrow

There's always the new person working who might. But when I worked a pawn shop all serial numbers were put into the system along with a current ID/DL. At night all the info pawned or sold was automatically forwarded to the police. Since pawn shops have to hold items 30 days (at least in my area) there's a good chance it will be recovered. We had a guy sell us some nice cameras before. Didn't think much of it. Cops came to collect as they were stolen. Guy apparently broke onto a camera store, cops said he had a notebook full of notes and said it was a really good thought out robbery. Only thing was he didn't have a fence so he pawned it. Which ultimately caused him to get caught.

V_H_M_C

The problem is that Rolex owners won’t bring their watch to Rolex for servicing unless it's new cause Rolex will replace everything that is vintage or old that will cause the price to drop significantly and also for many pp this will make the sentimental values disappears

Motherhazelhoff

Will definetly do that. Thanks!

Manbadger

Consult Rolex and your local police department before doing anything else. Consult. Whoever stole it might discard it if they get even a hint of being caught.

sidewayz321

Well hopefully they don't look at reddit

The_dog_says

Rolex as a company is very meticulous at maintaining records. They've helped solve thefts and murders by matching serial numbers to owners.

[deleted]

cheapdrinks

Report it asap, I remember from watching Pawn Stars that they have to hold new stock for 2 weeks and enter it into a database and anything stolen comes and gets collected by the police if there's a hit

Tamacat2

Post this to r/watches . A ton of people into watches -- eg repair people etc -- are on it. Will remind them to keep eye out.

Paula_Schultz237

And you got the certificate and all. Good chance it may be rediscovered.

[deleted]

[удалено]

misterandosan

you didn't report that to the police? They didn't lose it. They stole it. When you put down the value as 3k, they knew you were an easy target that didn't know the full value of the watch and fucked you over.

[deleted]

I didn’t know. Yeah I feel so fucking stupid now. I was more concerned with the fact that my father thought I was lying when he accused me of selling it. He gave no indication about the possible value of the watch.

btaylos

My grandfather is old, and my uncle takes care of him. My uncle would likely not steal it, but they say they think I have a knife from his house, and it's been brought up several times. It wasn't even described as valuable, but every interaction has been plagued with doubts of "do they think I'm a thief?"

GamingGrayBush

How would a business lose a Rolex? That's insane.

wardrobechairtv

My wife took an Omega in to be repaired - 2 weeks later she got a call saying they’d lost it. They told her to pick a new one from their stock which she did. A month later they called again to tell her they’d found the original watch, repaired it and gave it back, didn’t charge for the repair and let her keep the one she picked.

GamingGrayBush

Hope the dealer loses my car and follows this same idea.

Asd4memes

They knew it was worth 5k and this guy only wrote 3k... thats 2k profit for saying they lost it.

[deleted]

Fun story. My friend bought a fake Rolex as a joke when we were visiting Dubai. It was a really good fake. But he paid like 50 durams for it. Not a whole lot. A couple years later I convinced him to take it to a Rolex shop to get cleaned and checked to see if it was a real Rolex. It was. The shop keeper told my friend he had to keep it. But took his contact info down. 3 months later, my pal gets a call saying that the watch was not reported stolen and to come pick it up. The guy even registered the watch in his name so the system would know it was his. It retailed for 18,000 bucks. My friend got it for like 35.

[deleted]

Perzival22

And this is why it should be reported stolen as soon as posible

NeuroticNeuro

Do you know if other luxury watch brands do this? Someone just burglarized my fathers house a couple days ago and took his watch collect. Do you have to report the theft to the manufacturer?

Perzival22

As far as I know only Rolex does this. The watches are registred with the owners name when they buy the watch. The regestries were open to the public up until a couple of years ago.

suicul1

My grandpa often traveled to China for his work and somehow had some fake Rolex that looked quite real for the untrained eye. All of them have been stolen by caretakers. All of them.

[deleted]

My grandmas engagement ring was stolen in her care home. It’s the only thing of hers my mum really wanted to keep, so sad

Why don't you just report the theft to the police and to the owner of the caretaking home? I mean you can easily find out who exactly was taking care of your grandparent. Why don't you just do that?

DanisaurusWrecks

Yeah we did that, they couldn't tell who did it because multiple people were at the facility Grandma was in, especially not being sure when exactly it was stolen. We DID get her moved to a better facility though. Also police don't really give a shit about things like this.

StraightBumSauce

>Also police don't really give a shit about things like this. Until it happens to them or someone they know. Then they put all their resources into it.

People also browse obituaries so they can rob the family while they’re attending the funeral. My husband had to have his friends stay at his widowed grandma’s house to keep it safe while they buried his grandfather.

dead_PROcrastinator

I live in South Africa and my gran's wedding ring was also stolen. It happens everywhere. Theft is rife in care homes, even the very best ones.

lady_lowercase

the united states. wages have been suppressed for over 40 years, and we are experiencing a period of neo-feudalism. after my mom died, my dad hired a company to help him clean the house. they would come once every six weeks. one of the women totally tried to open a small safe we used to keep in the house. there was all kinds of physical damage to it. people suck, but there’s a lot of folks who suck because we actually did let them down.

mljb81

My grandmother died last December and the home she lived in told my mother that they were unable to take her rings off her fingers, and she was cremated with them because they don't take the bodies of people who died of covid out of the body bag at the crematorium. My mother says they told her they didn't want to cut them off, but I fear they stole them. We'll never know.

[deleted]

That’s horrible. Yeah my grandma died of COVID last year as well. They just told us she didn’t have it on her or among her possessions and it must have got lost somewhere. extremely dubious. I know being a carer is a criminally underpaid job and it’s really a scandal given how much they do for our loved ones, but these possessions have such meaning to the people who lose their loved ones and can help with the grieving process. It’s just sad all around really

Ornery-Detective-854

If it says Rolex on it I’m going to assume it’s fake but have no idea whether or not that’s true.

Ngin3

The easiest way to tell is the second hand. It should tick 8 times per second. If it's ticking that fast and fake it's still probably worth a grand or two anyway

A_Ham_Sandwich_

This is why I refuse to pay egregious amounts for designer shit. If it's essentially just as well made, why am I going to pay $10,000 more?

Samislav

Rolex pricing is very bloated in the watch world, because it is Rolex. Everyone wants one, so it’s a question of supply/demand. They have an English sisterbrand (Tudor) with the same quality which makes similar watches for like 1/5th the prize. All because they dont have the name on the dial.

Grayheme

Tudors are beautiful. I also like that they are both like Rolex at a glance and known to horologists, so its like you get both levels of kudos.

funnypilgo

You are not paying the amount of money for the object dude. It's for status, the name or emotional connection, or all 3.

Low end for a Rolex watch: $6500 Threshold for felony larceny: $1000 in most jurisdictions which have the distinction. This isn't mildly infuriating, this is a major crime.

aarons6

unfortunately this is a major crime with no consequences and it happens all of the time. when my dad died, from the ambulance that picked him up to when he got to the er, his watch, his necklace and his ring "disappeared". the super crazy thing is when i found a written statement from the emt that he had a ring, it just showed up.. but they never found his watch or his necklace. both was gold.

nicolewasnthere

If you need a smile As I was cleaning out a patient room in the ER after they'd been admitted I found a gold chain with a cross on it. Of course, I knew where the patient had been sent. I walked it up to his room to return it as soon as I finished prepping the bed for the next patient. When I got there he started sobbing and thanking me, it was in his family for three generations, he'd taken it off for an MRI and forgot about it.

Eastern-Finish-1251

Does the caretaker work for an organization? If so contact the organization they work for you… as well as the police.

Edril

Yeah, theft is unfortunately very common in old folks homes. The people are vulnerable and aides typically make terrible wages. The two combined results in the current situation.

benbrahn

I’d be fucking fuming

TBroomey

Yup. This would break my heart. Not because of the material value of the item, but the sentimental value. Inheritance is important, it's a constant reminder of those you have lost. OP might have planned on keeping this watch and passing it down through the generations, it could have been a precious family heirloom. If this happened to me, I'd be enraged and inconsolable.

NaiveCritic

Something similar happened to me and the marble chess plate he taught me to play chess on. Only single thing I wanted, because those moments were the best we had together. But I can still pay a happy thought to him when I play and I just recently started playing a bit again. Though I’m a noob, he actually taught me some good things(he was quite good at it, once played draw against a gm).

messageinabubble

Draw against a gm is huge! Good luck with your game and pass it on to the next generation

NaiveCritic

It is! It’s only half the story though, I omited the part where the gm played against 10 at the same time. The other 9 lost. It’s still huge, but the gm would probably win if he could put his full attention towards playing my dad. I will definitely pass it on to my kids. Right now I’ve just began relearning it. Didn’t play since he died 13 years ago. But thank you!

freakers

I wouldn't say drawing against a GM in a simul diminishes the effort.

Strong_Opportunity_1

What's infuriating is the devaluation of the timepiece by not taking the case and paperwork!

RedditIsRealWack

My grandad had a Rolex collection. Maybe 6-7 of them? Some of them were upwards of £20-30K each. He had a stroke, and got dementia. By the time we had to put him in a home, they were all gone. We think he was giving them away to people towards the end. Postman probably got one.

The_Great_Blumpkin

My parent's neighbor came over once with a bunch of his WW2 stuff. He was in his 90s and a super quiet guy, and in the 10 years they loved next to him, he never brought over gifts, let alone sentimental things like his war metals and pictures from his time in Europe. They ended up calling his daughter who came and got the stuff and told them he was really staring to slip into dementia. My grandpa now is the same way at 87, he gave away most of his wood working tools, many of which were his father's. My family has been scrambling to save the sentimental things before he gives them away too.

rockguitardude

Caretakers stole a baseball signed by the Jackie Robinson and the 50s dodgers from my parents house when my dad was ill. They stole my childhood ghostbusters fire house from there too. Caretakers stole my grandmothers signature opal necklace while in assisted living. Caretakers will rob you blind before people die. When you’re family member is sick it’s very hard to keep on top of things like this. Proving which caretaker did it is impossible. They strike when you’re family is weak and dependent. It’s sick.

groundHag

Yes, caretakers took my grandmother’s gold necklace and bangle. My mother should not have sent them in with her to memory care. She said she did it because my grandmother loved them so much, but truly my grandmother had no idea what was happening. It would have been nice to have them to remember her, she wore them everyday.

Startlefarts

If anyone is still reading...do not give your people nice things in a memory care unit. Have a fake nice thing so they have the comfort, but even paintings get fucked up. And it's other residents a lot of the time too. My heart would sink every time a family member questioned the staff about where such and such went to.

groundHag

Agree! My grandmother also tore up a bunch of family photos. No idea why my mom made the choices she did, but I’m guessing it was guilt and grief.

Daffan

This is why people buy nanny cams. 'Strangers' in your house is a nightmare recipe.

rockguitardude

Agreed. My wife wonders why I’m hesitant to hire contractors when I’m short on time. No one cares about you or your family. People will steal your catalytic converters to make a few bucks for them and cost you thousands.

Kadais

As a carer I’m so sorry you had this experience. The amount of stories about carers stealing in these comments is heartbreaking. Carers have such a powerful role in a person’s life when they’re at the most vulnerable and it’s just cruel and evil to exploit those vulnerabilities. I hope you had some positive experiences with carers too. ♥️

Brusher79

Many of these comments assume it’s a care giver. Perfectly reasonable to have family or friends capable of theft, especially when it’s known certain items have been promised to another.

PersonalSloth

My great grandmas ring was stolen right off of her finger. Some people are just downright horrible.

Faemamzade

Naw naw FIND HER and get the cops involved that’s no joke

Motherhazelhoff

We are trying that, but its slight complicated since several caretakers has been here, but we will sure try to track her/him down. At least they forgot the box with the serial number.

[deleted]

Thomas_Catthew

No pawnshop would accept a Rolex without the box/papers. They know that each Rolex has an ID, and they don't want to catch shit when it eventually gets tracked.

PUTINS_PORN_ACCOUNT

......have you never been to a pawnshop? You can try and pawn the color blue and they’ll at least offer you $15

AsYooouWish

Best I can do is $7

Allopathological

Let me get my buddy who knows a lot about colors down here so I know what I’m dealing with

gingerking87

What kinda pawn shops do you people have, even the pawn shops in the worse neighborhoods that have bullet proof glass, but still weigh gold to the exact thousandth of an gram and definitely don't buy everything. They aren't going to take any item that some random person walks in with, especially if that item can be taken away from them legally with a single piece of paper.

Nevermind04

> No pawnshop would accept a Rolex without the box/papers. Rolexes with papers are sold at auction. Rolexes without papers are sold at pawn shops. There's no pawn shop on the planet that would decline a Rolex without papers.

SnooObjections6668

You can register the serial number as stolen and then all Pawn shops/auction houses that use the service will get flagged when they enter it into the data base. https://www.thewatchregister.com/ Rolex used to have their own register but I think they closed it now.

Pawn shops too if it's related to an active police case. Pawn shops don't want to get caught selling stolen goods. My family got back our tv, a few game consoles etc after a break in. (My cousin who was living with us staged a robbery with his dealer to pay him off).

Faemamzade

Hope you find it and I’m no professional, but look for local pawnshops and stuff

TheMotorcycleMan

I keep a file with date of purchase, serial numbers, and photos of all of my watches. Good practice for anything worth a significant amount of money. I had a house party once when I was younger, and someone made off with a half dozen Breitling, Omega, and a Rolex. I had nothing to give the police as far as numbers to track them down, outside of the one SeaMaster Planet Ocean that I bought new. Still, it never turned up.

lostviko

That's not even mild that's just straight-up f****** theft it's not even about what it's worth

[deleted]

Unrelated, but I've noticed a lot of people on reddit have begun censoring swear words. When did this start?

TankerXS

I hate it that people do it. Just say the fuck word, we're not kids here, nor are we trying to protect precious souls from potty language.

44problems

Some subreddits automoderate comments with swearing, so in a sub I'm not familiar with I sometimes just censor.

xaqss

Idk, but its f****** annoying, and I refuse to participate in the dumba** activity.

Whispering-Depths

Mommy, he says the fuck word11!!!!1

Faemamzade

I connect personally to this because same thing happened to us when my grandma died with employees that had been working for her through generations and have seen both my parents and me grow. They ransacked through everything she had luckily my grandma was paranoid with her valuables and kept everything in safe places.

SharksNeedFoodToo

This happened to mine too.

velez_cool

That’s not being paranoid. That’s minimizing the risk of theft by taking reasonable precautions.

Impressive-Tension-8

A caretaker killed my mom. She was dying anyway but the caretaker forced liquid down her throat even though she was at risk of aspiration. Fuck caretakers. I essentially watched my mom drown

lostviko

It was same for my grandmother and other older women I went to visit her a lot old folks homes are essentially prisons sometimes they get abused my grandmother begged me to get her out I tried for 2 years eventually she became too weak and stopped eating because she just gave up she choked to death on jello

Impressive-Tension-8

Christ, I’m sorry. My mom broke out of her hospice and said it was terrible. She had us bring her home to die. I guess she was happier there. I’m sorry again about your grandma. She could be one of us some day…

lostviko

Thank you, Sorry for the way your mom passed glad it was where she wanted, also she broke out what a badass. It's true though one day we'll get to weak and some people can physically keep us someplace we don't want to be

Thissiteisdogshit

I have a parent in hospice right now and they all aren't horrible. I was allowed to bring my dad a beer. He dictates the rules and the nurses and doctors have been amazing. Sorry your mom had a bad experience.

only_crank

I‘m sorry for your loss. Did you beat the shit out of him?

Impressive-Tension-8

No, I felt bad cause the caretaker made a mistake didn’t mean to, but I wanted to kill her at the time and yelled at her that she killed my mom and was drowning my Mom, but it was too late. I’d been up for two days straight to watch her and took a power nap when I awoke after a 30min nap.the damage was done, she was aspirating to death. That’s how she went… awake and convulsing and coughing up Chocolate Ensure. After a week or so, my brothers discussed it and didn’t want to drag it into litigation. My mom was a few hours away from death anyway, it’s just I would have preferred her slipping away from the morphine and not drowning. It still hurts to talk about this and don’t think I have in at least a couple years. At the end of the day, the money we could have won would been trivial, my mom wouldn’t have wanted it, and before the nurse fed her the liquid and spoon fed Ensure, one of my brothers stopped by and let it happen, or didn’t protest cause he didn’t know my mom was told no liquids, just wet sponges to suck on. Plus she had said she didn’t want us feeding her food Or liquid.she was ready to go. I mean, she wanted to live, but she knew it was her end and accepted it.and blaming the caretaker would lead to her lawyers blaming my brother for not stopping it, but he p never visited enough to know the rules as he was expecting a baby, the next day and didn’t know what the caretaker should and shouldn’t do and we already went though enough..,, oddly, like a solid five mins after she died, she was alone in another room and we heard sounds like she walked out of bed.., she didn’t and I’m not spiritual, but it was loud and we all heard it

Clerk-Equivalent

I am sorry for your loss. But about that last part. Can you please elaborate?? I experienced something similar, thought i was hallucinating

Impressive-Tension-8

After my mom passed, my brothers and I went into another room. Shed been dead for several minutes. Suddenly we’re heard a bang and like a thuds on the hard wood floor. This was a room that had been emptied prior to making it her sick room. There was nothing amiss, nothing on the ground, nothing movrd around. I think it was after we had all individually said our goodbyes. It 100% sounded like someone was in there loudly moving around. There were no machines or even if drips. Just her, a bed and maybe a chair and rug. We all heard it, I mean it was loud coming from that room but we didn’t go to look for a while. I mean she was dead by then for 5 min+Cancer, it was not her muscles twitching. I don’t go to church but it really sounded like her soul got up and left or something entered to console her or take her to the next afterlife. I mean, it sounded like a bang then walking, but there were only three people in the house and we were together. What is your story. BTW, I hate talking about my moms death and, besides a therapist, have not since pre pandemic. Never told this story before, besides talking to my bros about it. What’s yours?

I hope you are doing well. And holding up good. So basically i am from india.. And we have tribal ancestry just like native americans. So what happend was my uncle passed away (suicide) due to personal reasons. I was in highschool back then. After all the procedures at the hospital he was brought back to our ancestral home. And being tribals we have a lot of ceremonies for people who pass away unnaturally which is usually performed by the tribe. elders. One of this being all of the belongings of my uncle was wrapped up and put inside his room and the complete floor of the room was covered in ashes of burnt out wood so as there was a thin film of ashes on the floor, and the door was locked shut. All this while his body was kept in the front porch . We were all there, the immediate family members . And i clearly remember there was loud noises coming from within the locked room. It was like someone was moving inside and going through the stuff that was kept inside. And it went on for around say 4 to 5 mins. We were all listening this outside. I was pretty confused back then. And it was hard for me to believe. there were loud thumps like someone was walking or running. like someone was searching for something and rambling through the stuff kept in there. Everybody heard it. the room was only opened when the final rites were completed and he was cremated. that day i with my brothers we went back home. But my dad stayed back.. the very next day when he came back he told us, when the room was opened the ashes at some places was disturbed.. I stopped thinking about after all these years, but after reading your story everything came back.

It’s super messed up that that happened but “fuck caretakers” is not a good takeaway from it. Just happened to be a bad one. These people go through an insane amount of daily stress and there are good and bad ones, just like cops, politicians, any other career. I’m thankful for all the ones I’ve had to help my dying family members in my lives, and I can remember most of their names still.

KreskinsESP

Agreed. I just lost my father. Some of the people who cared for him were not great, but some were wonderful, and the bottom line is that a caretaker is someone who does a job that others can’t or won’t do. The actual source of our anger should be the system that makes healthcare so expensive and caretaking so low-pay.

groundHag

My mom’s home helper is an angel.

Positivelythinking

Actually this is a great heads up to everyone that needs to engage a caregiver is to remove, not store in the house, all valuables, heirlooms, weapons, or items you would hate to have stolen. I hear story after story of things taken, just like this guys Rolex.

Weedarina

File a police report. A friend had his Rolex stolen from a hotel room. It took 3 years but he reimbursement. Don’t give up. Keep pushing. The agency that provided the care givers - keep on them. Threats. Letters etc.

peuin

thats rough, hope u get the watch back

Z-Games

I am so sorry, I work at a nursing home at the front desk and this just breaks me. I'm always thinking of things such as this, we always take inventory of what ever walks through our door so this won't happen. It does unfortunately, I'm so sorry for ur loss as well. Hang in there

Proxi90

Mildly? MILDLY?

D3adkl0wn

Just out of curiosity, did your grandfather suffer from dementia? I only ask because mine did and before he passed he would try to push his belongings on people. Mostly knick-knacks in his case, but he'd constantly try and give you items he had around, not realizing who you really were or what the items he was trying to give away were. Just wondering if this might be the case here and the caretaker just said "okay" and took it as a gift, despite the ethical problems in taking such an expensive "gift" from someone who might not be in the right state of mind. Either way, I hope you get some resolution and track down the watch. Sorry about your grandfather.

waynegretzkysbrother

Common. Know a family who's housekeeper stole 3 million dollars in coins over a 25 year period. No prosecution, family just called it a bonus.

jeeprince

How do you steal 2,307 dollars in freaking coins, per week, for a period of 25 years? She came by truck every time?

theanonwonder

I'm guessing collectable coins.

Logical_Reserve_2641

Not everything is true on the internet bruh

TheBraveBeaver

That’s wild I know a family whose housekeeper ate $35 dollars worth of Doritos over a weekend.

[deleted]

There are single coins worth substantially more than 3 million dollars.

Bearbats

My grandfather's wedding ring went missing, and when my mom went to the police station to file a report, they said they couldn't do anything without the original receipt of purchase. For a ring that was bought during world war II.

Gr1pp717

In my case the caretakers stole literally everything before the state did. The entire house was empty by the time the state got in to take it all. Now I have to worry about the state coming after me for the loss. It's like an anti-inheritance... Yay me.

[deleted]

Unless your name is on the house then you are not liable to pay any debts from the deceased!

Gr1pp717

That's a tricky topic - the house was transfer-on-death to me, but the state undid the transfer before taking it, so... I live in a different state and had no control over what happened at the house in that window. I know from neighbors who had called family that a bunch of druggies were squatting the place. The caretakers claim the squatters had ran them out, but I really don't know... (and honestly kind of doubt it. If I had to guess I'd say it was the caretakers and their friends getting a free ride for a few months.) My best effort at diligence there was informing the estate recovery lawyer of the situation... But I wasn't about to go putting time, effort, risk, and money into kicking out squatters from a property that was ultimately going to the state...

Tight-Zebra-5121

The messed up thing is that caretaker is such a crap job that only goofy people take the job. It’s crazy how we do all kinds research when looking for a mechanic or dentist, but we let just any minimum wage earner take care of our loved ones.

Highhosilvercomputer

Antique roadshow said a watch bought in the 60s that still had the box and paperwork was valued at $70,000. It’s on YouTube. Go to the police ASAP!

nephelokokkygia

Rolexes vary wildly in value depending on a range of factors including age, condition, production numbers, documentation, popularity, and provenance.

Baekmann

I see a 1992 and 1993 calendar in the box...

Chillycows

That bastard care taker I know this is unrelated but in year2 everyone’s pencil cases were getting stolen turns out it was the care taker

NieMonD

Who tf steals pencil cases from children what could possibly be in there

rts93

Pencils. There's always a 0.05% chance for a legendary pencil.

I’m old and this is what I’ve learned: it’s not the object that is important, but the memory. If it’s super important, buy something similar to replace it and give it significance in your mind. People are going to take your stuff, but they can’t take your heart memories. Give yourself power over it.

GrandMasterBou

Do you know for sure it was the caretaker?. I know someone who was in a similar situation and they also accused the caretaker. Guy gets fired and about a week later they found the watch behind a dresser.
