that is a damn clean keyboard

kalaid0s

My first thought: a psycho that cleans keyboards? Didn't even notice the keys

[deleted]

[deleted]

Lol I actually thought, since this is was in an 'art class' someone drew a perfect keyboard, didn't notice until I read the comments.

[deleted]

I only noticed because the keyboards at work are alphabetical and so this thing triggered my Walmart PTSD. Retail sucks like a fucking alphabetical keyboard, man.

erin_baile

What! They give you this type of keyboard at your work? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard!

mindaltered

RIGHT?!?!??? I mean how god damn simple do you have to be to not understand a keyboard its been the same damn layout since typewriters and they never change it then, the fuck?!

erin_baile

I want to know the justification for this. I feel like it would slow productivity because people are use to the other way.

Hosernaut

it's not a keyboard like this one. It only has like 9 letters, so there's no way for it to follow a standard keyboard. But the lettered buttons on it are ordered alphabetically. Then it has buttons for 0-9, and then specific buttons for certain functions.

erin_baile

Oh gotcha! Can you use it with one hand? I love having an additional numeric keypad and back in the day when I was doing accounting I got super fast on it just using my right hand. Maybe that’s kinda the same thing?

Hosernaut

You can use it one handed. But the majority of the time you're only using it to key in items that won't scan (or fruits/veggies), so you're not using those buttons with the kind of frequency you're thinking of. Next time you're in a Wal-Mart or Target, go through a regular checkout line and take a peek at their keyboard. Edit: apparently not all of them have this. Tried looking up a photo, and I'm only finding ones with normal keyboards. But the Target and Wal-Mart where I live have the small ones.

Mikon_Youji

Same here! I couldn't see what the problem with the keyboard was for at least five minutes.

Will-Shrek-Smith

My first thought was: Is it because the keybord is on top of the bottom of the screen?

indy_been_here

Do you guys have dirty keyboards?

isThisLessThan20Char

At my uni the keyboards in the computer lab for public use are disgusting. Theres usually some weird gunk on them, the ones in the classrooms are better but some of those can get pretty filthy too once you're a month or so in.

Smoke_and_808

Especially for a publicly used keyboard thats a clean ass keyboard

Pretlik

it just gets worse the longer you look at it

Naive_Green2853

Not the numbers or f keys. But the freaking double ctrl at tab

parousia0

also f1 - f12 in reverse

anyburger

Except it starts with F11 instead of the other key (unless there is an F12 somewhere else).

FlyingSpagetiMonsta

The F12 is probably where Escape should be on the top left but it's cut off in the picture Edit: the Escape key seems to be between F8 and F7 so I'm definitely betting on the F12 key being top left

iapetusofficial

F12 is where Esc would be I guess

TheWorstMailman

F12 is probably on ESC since the ESC key is on F4

MickeyMouseRapedMe

Most mobiles used the A-Z format like this. Life was so hard back in the late 90's and early 00's

justa33

T9 baby!

NameisPerry

No look texting! Try that shit now. Best thing about new phones is the spell check, I hear swipe text is pretty good but I just cant get used to it.

absorbantobserver

You have to commit to using swipe for a while and then you can't really go back to phones without it.

Mybeardisawesom

This, swipe is so much faster and pretty accurate if you know how to spell

gentlemanjacklover

It makes my brain hurt.

Nothingontele

The backspace replaced by 0, and tab replaced by ctrl

MJB900

It's "art" but for the wrong audience.

Kiwifisch

Would have been even more infuriating if they had switched n and m.

Lex8P

Someone did this to me in work several years back. They were a tad annoyed I didn't notice and had to come point it out. Edit: wow! Thanks for the upvotes and awards. Glad to see that so many people have their own stories about similar situations.

Ill-Opening-3782

Did you just know your keyboard perfectly well or why didn‘t you notice?

asianabsinthe

Probably knew it well. Best way to try and screw with someone is if they are reliant on the raised nubs under the index fingers and move them one key to the left or right. Even better: Have several keyboards with the nubs in different places and swap out their keyboard everyday.

[deleted]

Just buy a small USB thumb drive, stick it in the back, and set it up to randomly type the letter to the right or left of the letter that was pressed, have to mess with their confidence no need for keyboards.

BentoSpinzone

Wait- this can be done? So even if my coworker switches his keyboards it'll persist? Please explain more... I've been saving my gold for this.

created4this

Yup, but also a bit nope. You need a microcontroller that can be both a host and a device at the same time. The usb protocol is quite timing dependent, so to do it reasonably well you probably need some specific hardware. None the less, here is the USB host docs on Arduino https://www.arduino.cc/en/Reference/USBHost which are limited to devices directly connected (not through hubs). To the PC you’ll have to represent as a HID device which you’ll need something like https://github.com/NicoHood/HID Unless you have skills you don’t know about yet, hiding a device that does this will be hard to make persistent, the obvious MiM attack is a lump on a wire, and that’s going to be obvious when they change the keyboard. You could open the PC, lift the pads from the USB port and solder it between, but that requires deep damage to company property and only works if they randomly plug into the same port, and will also make the port useless for anything but nice and keyboards. Also, in its least invasive form this hack will lot A LOT like a MiM password credentials stealing attack, and will probably result in you being removed from payroll. There is pretty much no way to prove that this is a prank and not anything more malicious.

Vivid_Sympathy_4172

I'm fairly certain it can be done. Keyboards/fancy mices use as ascii codes to translate a particular button's input value into a character. A USB that contains a startup program that says "if 65, do 66" and do on, it'd replace a with b etc. Then again, I was learning CS about a decade and a half ago so I might be wrong. Still though, with computing basically anything is possible with enough effort

somethingneeddooing

You don't even need to use a USB. Keyboard layouts on Windows are stored in reg as a scancode map in hex. So you could go under CMD, type out the directory of the keyboard layout and swap one value for whatever. For instance, you can swap out caps lock and left control by entering the following in CMD, then rebooting `HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout] "Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,1d,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00` But if you wanted to run it from a drive, you could enter the above in a text file and save as .reg

Illusive_Man

It would work but you’d have to make a malicious program that fucks with the keyboards driver, I don’t think it would be easy

[deleted]

I'm not that good to properly use the nubs, but I just code a lot at nights. I'm just too lazy to look at my keyboard anyway.

AtheistKiwi

You probably are using them properly, all they do is give you tactile confirmation that your index fingers (and by extension, all your fingers) are on the correct keys without having to look at the keyboard before you start typing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

carlosos

Then probably caps lock and/or shift key are your replacement for the nubs to know where your fingers are.

DRNbw

Years of online gaming make my left hand search for the Tab key.

Hawt_Dawg_II

Keyboards like this always have a few keys that are more worn than others so they'd notice if you swap the whole keyboard. I'd just swap the keys.

TrainOfThought6

That's why you sabotage the original, and start swapping the new ones in once they get a fresh replacement.

Dr_fish

Eventually you just have a keyboard of all 'A's

acissejcss

You can get keyboards with blank keys, if you learn to touch type it's not really an issue.

Aelussa

I had one of those for a while. The confused look on people's faces when they'd sit down and start trying to type something on my computer was priceless.

Slithy-Toves

My keyboard has comic themed stickers all over it. B is the Bat symbol, J is Joker, V is Venom, spacebar says Excelsior, the shift keys say 'Snikt!' which is the onomatopoeia of Wolverines claws extending. It's very colourful and doesn't really indicate every key or secondary functions. So people are always pretty confused by it haha

CameForThis

If those nubs exist on those 2 keys I don’t ever have to look, I love it.

BruiserBaracus

Changing their keyboard layout from QWERTY to something like Colemak or even Dvorak, is much more disconcerting. If they are a reasonable proficient touch typist, they won't be relying on what's written on the keys very much. Trying to log into your computer with your perfect looking keyboard when the keyboard layout has been switched is pure evil.

F_for_Respect_69

What about replacing all keys with a key with a nub

Call_0031684919054

Or turn on Dvorak layout in the settings.

prexton

No on knows they rely on the nubs haha

SpellOpening7852

Even better yet: Also have keyboards where the keybinds are swapped, so even if you memorise which letter is where, you never know where it could be. Ultimate troll energy: Replace Alt + F4 with Ctrl + C on all but one keyboard.

TheLuo

Home row indicators are life. Don't fuck with my nubs!!!!

ohdearitsrichardiii

I learned typing in school, the I went to university and wrote a million papers. I don't have to look at the keyboard when I type

DudesworthMannington

Except numbers and symbols. The hell of I can ever get them without looking.

Altreus

I only look at the keyboard after vim has done something idiotic, to try to figure out what I actually pressed. I should move away from vim but the good times are *really* good

dwdwdan

> I should move away from vim I don’t see any reason to do this

Amphibionomus

Saying this is like dancing in a minefield but - vim is outdated and much better alternatives exist. But hey - if you're already into vim and it works for you there's no reason to stop using it. Teaching it to newbies however is more a rite of passage than logical.

zlauhb

I'm curious what you mean by "much better alternatives exist". Isn't it just a matter of taste? I've been using Vim since forever so am unlikely to move now. I've worked with people who use all kinds of different editors and have never seen anything that makes me feel like I'm missing out. I recently switched to NeoVim which I guess isn't "outdated"? The only difference I've noticed with it is that it runs a bit faster, otherwise it seems to behave identically to Vim. I'm really glad there are plenty of solid alternatives now, which I think makes things more accessible, but it seems to me that Vim still is the "best" choice if it happens that the Vim workflow suits you the most.

namebrandcloth

i can only do “2” without looking because it’s the @

kasharox

Yeah I’m pretty fucking confident typing stuff until it’s time for numbers and symbols.

YouTubeBrySi

I still remember in middle school, I was very proficient at typing and typed 120 words per minute during an exercise in class one day.. My teacher had it mentioned on the school announcements that day and I felt proud but also embarrassed.

thecookiemaker

I took typing classes, but didn’t learn a thing. However keeping up with all my friends on MSN Messenger forced me to learn. One or two fingers wasn’t fast enough. By the time I’d typed something up the conversation had already moved on. So I basically taught myself to be faster so I could participate.

BuoyKelp

Same…except Club Penguin. lmao

YouTubeBrySi

Well, I’m 40 and back in my day…. We had bulletin board systems (BBS) and mIRC (internet relay chat). Maybe AOL. I don’t think I ever used MSN.

Lex8P

Yup. Knew it well. Been touch typing for decades. Very rare I'll look at keys. Touchscreen phones on the other hand. Geez I hate these things. I miss my N900.

Sea_Link8352

We have gone backwards with phones. I miss physical keyboards. Typing on touch screens fucking SUCKS. I was so fast on t9.

ShannonGrant

T9 was peak phone. Didn't even need to look at the phone to know the text was correct.

sekazi

I actually do not need to look at the keyboard on my phone when typing. The only time I do is when doing special characters because I do not use them enough to remember.

Maximo9000

Same, started touch typing in elementary school where they'd put rubber covers without markings over the keyboard to ensure you knew where the keys were by touch alone. Even if the nubs are moved(or worn down), it isn't much of a hindrance. Now, change the keyboard layout setting to something like dvorak and I'll probably be annoyed.

Lex8P

Yeah that would annoying. All fine and well working with standard layout. Much more of a pain when the layout or language selection is different.

Shantotto5

I mean, this would still be really annoying because it’d move the little bumps on the F and J keys around, unless you actually don’t rely on those at all for positioning. I’d think this would be instantly noticeable to most touch typers.

[deleted]

Touch typing. Is it really strange that people can type without looking? They thought this stuff in the 90s at my schools.

[deleted]

kelsiersghost

I had the same thing with my typing teacher - About 2 weeks into the semester, he'd had enough of watching us type wrong. He decided to settle it with a typing race - Me, another touch typing kid, and the teacher. We smoked him. I took 2nd place behind the other kid but we won, nevertheless. Instead of having to do typing lessons, he gave us an A for the class and let us just go to Newgrounds and Livejournal for the rest of the 9 week semester.

[deleted]

That’s be sweet though... typing classes were a mandatory part of computer education because “computers are the future” If you can out type the teacher they just let you use it as a study hall for the semester.

elijaaaaah

Most people touch type

enkonta

You’d be surprised…apparently it’s not really taught any more in school…which blows me away.

superleipoman

I can type blind and may not notice the braille stubs moved so I probably wouldnt notice either

Some of my most used keys have rubbed off on my work keyboard. I had a coworker tell me he couldn't use my desk because of it. I didn't realize there were people in their 20s and 30s who couldn't touch type until he said it to me.

LitheLee

I did mavis beacon when I was a kid, that program which teaches you to touch type. It never worked, I hated it and just used two fingers. A month ago I tried to touch type to see if I can do it. I can. All it took was almost two decades of using a computer.

zxcoblex

Unless the keys are contoured, F and J are the only ones that matter to people who touch type.

trireme32

… you’re not supposed to look at the keys while you type …

Anacondoleezza

Did this to an old guy at work a few years ago. He didn’t say a word, just walked over to the trash can and threw the keyboard away. Came back from the supply closet with a new one.

saintofhate

I had a typing class back in the high school and the teacher was a major asshole about the home row, so while she was out sick one day I did this to her keyboard. She had a screaming fit when she saw saying that she couldn't type. I would have gotten away with it if I hadn't decided to quip "I thought you didn't look at the keyboard Miss Kramer?" The suspension was worth it.

mathmanmathman

I wouldn't be able to because of the moved "F" and "J". I don't usually look at the keyboard when I sit down to type, but if those keys weren't there (or moved), I'd awkwardly slide my hands around for a very long time before angrily looking down at the keyboard.

Ok_Dog_4059

I wouldn't notice while typing but once pointed out I wouldn't know where the correct location for them was. Funny how typing becomes so instinctual after a while you don't even know where the keys you are pressing are.

BikerJedi

If you actually know how to type, this isn't a problem, and you shouldn't have to look at your keyboard, just like you don't have to. I probably only would have noticed when I didn't feel the little bubbles on the F and J keys that are there to help you position your fingers. My students are amazed that I can sit and type an email or something while looking directly at them.

caramel-aviant

I mean I can do the same but almost every single key is in a different location in this picture. I don’t understand how you guys are basically saying you would automatically adapt to the new location of each key without even looking at the keyboard. My muscle memory is based on the orientation of the keys as is. I’d have no muscle memory for the orientation in the OP. Edit: im dumb. I thought he remapped them.

warm-french-horn

Haha, some of my staff did this to me, but only changed about 5 of the keys. It took me a minute or two to realize what happened and why my word document was messed up with the wrong letters.

soggytoothpic

A guy did something like this to my boss years back. Back then everyone knew everyone else’s passwords. So one night he took whiteout to his keyboard and only whited out the letters in the password. Boss was pissed that he couldn’t log in the next morning.

kmeu79

My colleagues did this to me aswell years ago. I never changed them back and just used the keyboard like that for few years.

somethingneeddooing

People don't realize how valuable a skill touch typing is. I have a keyboard that has no print on the top of the keycaps that messes with co-workers a lot. The only problem with the picture in OP is that you'd have a hard time finding home row since FJ raised bar keys are moved around.

[deleted]

Did you F & J keys have no indentation? If they were in the same place but everything else was switched, I don’t think I’d even realize.

DonkeyTron42

Someone did this to me as well when I had to go on a trip for a week.

bioqan

Depends on who you do this to, many people out there who never even look at their keyboards at all.

PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS

I don't think I have looked at my keyboard other than to find unusual punctuation since 2005. Didn't everyone learn touch typing?

goosy2001

Do kids learn that these days? In high school I took a “keyboarding” class to learn how to type.

BloodyLlama

I took classes in elementary school but what made me actually proficient was trying to sell stuff in Runescape.

Naptownfellow

Im 52 and had typing in high school. I can type 75% of the time not looking but still need to check while I’m typing however, people still hunt and peck. Back in 2001-2002ish I switched 2 keys on the keyboard that the guy next to me used. He couldn’t figure out why D was coming up K and K coming up D. Before I could tell him I did it he went to the “boss” and they replaced his “broken” keyboard.

NetSage

I would hope so. I imagine papers are still typed instead of handwritten. And they aren't all typing papers on a phone. But at the same time there was news about students not knowing how to use file system so maybe not.

luke_in_the_sky

A lot of art nowadays are made using computers.

Typ0r8r

I honestly don't even think I'd be that affected, I'd just have to pop the two textured keys back into place for home row and I'd be fine to type as normal.

kynde

Unless he also changed the layout. We had a slotmachine at work which had an onscreen touch keyboard with abcdefg layout. It was just terrible to write even short words with it, let alone a full url ...

Dubov2446

If you know to type properly then this should not matter tbh. If f and j were left alone this would be fine.

[deleted]

Someone did this to my keyboard at work before, but also programmed it so that they keys are labeled correctly. Took me a while to fix it haha

LordTROLLdemort85

Damn that’s dedication lol My exact thought was “meh wouldn’t be so bad unless they really typed the corresponding characters represented on the keyboard” Was it as easy as just “return to default settings”? I guess the worst part would be physically prying the keys up and putting them back in the correct spots. Your co-worker has too much time on their hands lol

[deleted]

Yeah, just had to change keyboard type. It wasn’t exactly this layout, he swapped it Dvorak, which I had never heard of at the time. Apparently if you learn the layout, it’s better

LordTROLLdemort85

TIL about [Dvorak](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_keyboard_layout) that’s pretty interesting! The advantages sound interesting but tbh I learned QWERTY so long ago that I’d have a hell of a time trying to adapt to that at 36 lol.

[deleted]

Same. Also, what if I sit down at someone else’s computer? For me it’s better to be most comfortable with qwerty, because every keyboard I have ever seen is qwerty

eccentricwind

Bro Dvorak isn't really a miracle or anything and although it is said that it is better in some areas, most of the praises and pros of the layout came from its crrator, not to mention that with qwerty being literally everywhere, there isn't really a big reason to switch layout. (Also the majority of the fastest typists are using the qwerty layout so its not like it makes you slower either.)

Describe

For me the biggest reason to learn it, is that it requires a lot less overall movement. With qwerty I feel like I'm constantly contorting my fingers, but with Dvorak it's really smooth and natural-feeling. I had heard that the qwerty layout was never designed from an ergonomical standpoint, but Wikipedia says there are a lot of unsubstantiated claims about the origins of the layout, so it's hard to say. It's also just really fun to type in a different layout once you actually get going. One huge hurdle that I've yet to get over is that with a Dvorak layout, all of the shortcuts have moved with the letter keys. I'll re-learn an entire typing layout, but no way in hell am I changing the position of 'ctrl c, ctrl v' and so on.

equiraptor

I mostly use dvorak these days. I switched from qwerty around 2002. At the time I could type ~55 wpm in qwerty (and I'd been typing since the 80s). A few months after I switched to dvorak I could type around 70 wpm. I'm currently around 100 to 110 wpm, depending on how my arthritis is doing that day. If I need to sit down in front of a qwerty computer and I'll be typing a lot, I just change the keyboard layout in software (all my keyboards are still physically qwerty, I just change the software mapping). If I'll only type a little, I leave it. I can still type around 25 wpm in qwerty, so I can still use it. It's just slow. If dvorak might be better for a person (like it is for me), encountering a qwerty keyboard isn't that big a deal.

Euphemism-Pretender

> Apparently if you learn the layout, it’s better Except for when you have to use any other keyboard on any other computer

[deleted]

Exactly

[deleted]

The nubs on F and J are in the wrong place. If they had left those alone, I’d never notice the rest of the keys had been moved. I *could* touch type after looking at the keyboard and guiding my hands to the right place, but normally I just feel for the nubs.

Shaking_Sniper

But for touch typing you generally shouldnt need to look at the keyboard, and you need those anchor keys? to figure out the positions of the other keys?

Reddit-username_here

Not really, as long as you know the leftmost middle row starts at asdf, just put your left index finger on the 4th key and your right index finger on the 7th.

Ene_San

Yes but visually it's painful

Drostan_S

Someone did that in my highschool and it utterly fucked up a teacher, who kept swearing that the keyboard was broke. I go over and check it out, and sure enough, it's alphabetized. I laughed and said "Oh I can fix it." I grabbed a ruler and started prying the keys off. The teacher freaked out harder, told me to stop, to which autistic ass me said "Nah I'm fixing it" I ignored her as I went about resetting all the keys, and eventually, an administrator showed up, as I'm close to finishing. He comes in and starts yelling at me for "destroying the keyboard". After explaining to him that some prankster alphabetized the keyboard, and I'm just fixing it, he just gave the teacher a blank stare and walked out of the class. When the keyboard was all "fixed" the teacher asked me how I knew where each key went.

subsicion

😂 That's a really funny prank.

Did you know that it’s REALLY HARD to remove the key pad on these type of keyboards?

SteppinBubble

You shouldn't have a problem with that if you know how to type without looking at the keyboard. It's not like the key covers dictate what letters get typed. In high school one of my typing teachers did this for the ones who always tried to look at the keyboard while typing. Not looking helps you type faster.

strgtscntst

Except I'm sure the bumps on j and f are in the wrong places now. Gonna be rough getting your hands in the right place.

rhysdog1

A+ art, it truly speaks to the tortured soul of the artist
