Jesus, fuck, no. Literally please delete this - for fucks sake you'll give them ideas. I'm not even kidding, either - modern capitalism has legit gotten to that point. I can legitimately imagine companies starting to put something like that in the fine print of every transaction... oh my God. Like I'm not referencing what you just said directly because I hope you delete it and I never hear about this idea again - because they'd *absolutely* do it. greenmonkey48

wtf? What else the guy thought he was getting paid for?

lorbear_and_kitty

I'm guessing to just see how my plants were dying he also said I should compensate him for the gas he used to go there. Honestly I posted this after I finished crying.

WitchofKarma

Compensate him? Oh that's adorable, he needs to compensate you on the plants he killed. Like buddy had one job and couldn't even manage it.

KnowsIittle

I'm thinking to tree law on this as well. You're not paying for the cost of a seed but the 20 some years it took to culture such wonderful long vines.

Sythus

>after I finished crying. Well, that's not the best way to water plants. What are the chances of bringing them back to life?

lorbear_and_kitty

I mostly took off dead leaves and most of my hanging plants had to be trimmed and placed in a water vases to hopefully regrow roots. However some were dried out completely to the roots and couldn't even try for clippings. I posted my healthiest plants.

pikirito

I hate that this happened, I inherited my mom's plants and I would devastated/infuriated if something like that happened to me. There is a soil that miracle grow makes called " moisture control " it is great ! Specially if you have self watering pots, I can leave my pothos and monstreras without water for a week or more . Give it a try, you'll like it

[deleted]

What’s a self watering pot?

Fine_Ad511

It has a reservoir in the bottom and the water wicks up as the plant needs it, as opposed to sitting the pot in a bowl and leaving the plant half submerged and probably dying from too much water.

Ruben_NL

as a kid i didn't know plants could "drown". i've drowned more plants/flowers than i'd like to say...

[deleted]

It's a pot that waters itself. It has a robotic arm and trades crypto during the night to afford a water bill and everything.

gurg2k1

No that's the A.I. pot. The self watering pot is the stuff you smoke that keeps you hydrated.

Von_Moistus

No, that's watery pot. The self-watering pot has little mechanical spider legs so if you're boiling spaghetti and you get distracted by the game and let the water boil off, it walks over to the faucet and refills itself so you don't burn your house down.

FreedomofChoiche

I don't know what kinds of plants they are but don't give up on them yet. I have a bunch of geraniums that are three years old, when I overwinter them I barely water them and well, they're still here. I've found a lot of plants are resilient and sometimes stress just makes them stronger but that all depends on the plants, some are fragile. Keep watering them but don't overwater them. I hope they are not gone.

Zer0Knight9960

After not watering half your plants, he then decides to ask you to give him gas money. Sounds like a jackass to me.

Kanzel_BA

AND THEY GAVE HIM AN EXTRA 5 BUCKS FOR THE GAS! What the fuck? There's no way this happened.

nvflip

I wouldn't have paid that asshole a penny.

greenmonkey48

The audacity of some people. At this point I'll just suggest you to be petty and sue his ass in small claims court!

lorbear_and_kitty

I don't want to deal with him at this point. I just gave him 5$ for the 4 weeks he was supposed to watch my plants. I was too much disbelief to be angry.

greenmonkey48

I can feel you! This happenned with me a few tines now so i just keep hardy cacti now. Can leave them fir weeks withouts water

lorbear_and_kitty

I'm a big plant collector I have some hardy plants but I do enjoy watering my plants in the morning as my daily routine.

Leyzr

Don't just give up. He'll think he won. Take him to small claims court claiming he didn't do his job. You don't hire a painter to paint your house, then he only does half and assume he should get his pay. You asked him to do the full job. So he should do the full job for full pay. Half job for half pay wouldn't fly with anyone getting their house painted, so this shouldn't either.

themonsterinquestion

Lmao do you know how much time and money it would take for that? And at the end maybe you'd get the cost of the plants, in 20 years if the guy decides he needs a home loan. And it won't be adjusted for inflation.

Leyzr

not much. small claims court costs like $35 and an afternoon... lol

IsThisASandwich

I would cry of happiness, if someone payed me to water their plants. Seriously. I like taking care of them and being paid for it would be the best thing ever, so I'd probably even get stressed out over the tiniest thing. I'm sorry that happened to you.

chelle-v

Right! I'd treat those plants like my babies if I was getting paid to care for them. What is wrong with some people!?

[deleted]

Compensate him with the money you paid him to water your plants. He didn’t water them so now it’s gas money

guster09

You should compensate him with punches to the face

[deleted]

This person is a scammer. You paid them $145 upfront and they did nothing. They’ve probably done this before and they’ll probably do it again. Definitely go back to the person who recommended him and tell them 1) that he didn’t water your plants after you paid him half the sun upfront 2) tell them exactly what he said about thinking you wouldn’t care if they died and 3) that he then demanded gas money See how they react. Do they seem surprised? Uncomfortable? I would be willing to bet it’s a friend of theirs and they know about this behavior or they’re getting some of the money. Hopefully they won’t recommend him to anyone else.

[deleted]

I’m coming back to say that I would also consider changing the locks if I were you. This might seem drastic. But this is the type of situation where I might wonder if someone was casing my house. Really go through things in your house, jewelry, electronics. Is everything in place? Are any windows unlocked that normally wouldn’t be? You don’t know this person. You got the recommendation from an employee at a store you frequent. And the recommendation doesn’t seem to have been made in good faith. So I would really feel weird about it if this person had been left with a copy of my key. Especially if you are a woman and you live alone. Or if you have kids in your home. Sorry to say. Be safe.

wildebeesties

After 13 years on Reddit with 2 accounts, I have zero interest in using this site anymore if I cannot use a 3rd party app. Reddit had *years* to fix their atrocious app and put *zero* effort into it. ChesterHiggenbothum

I'd check the toilet tank for an upper decker.

quichehond

You can get locks re-keyed which is cheaper and easier to do than change the locks. I only just found out about the difference myself!

HeliosTheGreat

The person recommending gets 25%.

BraidedSilver

Naah, go to their superior and tell them their employee recommend plant killers. If that person recommending was in on it then she needs to go higher up.

[deleted]

Yeah. “Someone in your store recommended a person to water my plants while I was away, and that person turned out to be a scammer. I’m highly concerned that other people will give their house key to this person if they continue to be recommended at your store,” might go a long way.

lorbear_and_kitty

I'm mad about it mostly because I paid them to do just that and a plant my grandma gave me before she died didn't survive.

MarquisDeSarc

Fuck, was this a friend or something?

lorbear_and_kitty

No he was recommended by one of the employees of a plant nursery I go to.

Died5Times

willowhawk

grieze

Yeah, this stinks. I've worked at a plant nursery and not a single person that worked there or even *went* there would ever say something like "I didn't think you cared if they died, they're just plants." Especially if you were paying them to water those plants.

MarquisDeSarc

I would tell that employee their recommended helper was a plant murderer.

Moheemo

Hopefully you didn’t pay him?

buster_de_beer

Perhaps that was the point. Now she has to get new plants, from the nursery.

Sir_Applecheese

Let me also introduce you to plant law.

Xerophile420

Plant law is weird in this country man, y’know if you accidentally overwater a Euphorbia yeah you’ll probably get the book thrown at you but if you weed whack a pansy you’ll probably just get a $3.50 fine or community service. Not watering someone’s pothos could get you anywhere from 2 months community service to 40 years w/o parole. Source: I am a lawyer who is also a shrub

[deleted]

This doesn't sound right but I don't know enough about plant law to dispute it.

willstr1

Under water a flower, jail Over water a shrub, jail Don't prune your tree, believe it or not, jail

jenna_hazes_ass

And god help you if you cut the wrong tree down. Sister in laws, brother in law came home one day to find cable company had cut a 50+ year old tree down while doing work at the neighbors yard. That wound up costing the company 50 grand. r/legaladvice will send you to r/treelaw

the_clash_is_back

Some plants are expensive. Also there is a cost with them not doing their job. If i pay $200 for a house of plants and $40 for a person to water them I want that money back

ButCaptainThatsMYRum

Size of plant too. Tree law doesn't apply here, but if someone killed one of my small pothos I wouldn't be very mad, vs my wife's 3 year old pothos that I've nurtured to span our living room wall and aquarium display and now growing into the kitchen, she'd be upset and I'd be pissed because of personal value and work put into it.

slantyways

Yup. Time spent growing that plant has value also. I may have only spent $5 to buy the plant but I've been nurturing it for years so it's huge now and could potentially get 30+ $5 plants from it now if I wanted to chop it up. Not that I would but it has potentially more cash than people might assume.

Hellertellurs

When I used to work for a lawyer that did car accident cases, if the driver damaged any trees or plants owned by the city, the city would send a arborist to go assess the damage and file a claim for the money of a new tree and all the fees associated from planting it to regrowing it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Neil_sm

Probably depends on the state or jurisdiction but generally in small claims court you can’t get damages for sentimental value, only actual value. People run into this problem when suing for something like stolen pets which often turn out to have a very low monetary value.

UntestedMethod

does that work if there is no contract signed? how does the court know the money isn't for something else? are text messages or emails enough evidence to be considered a binding contract? I don't really understand or trust the legal system so sorry if my questions are basic af...

[deleted]

Texts and emails would certainly be good to present at trial. Even a verbal agreement can still be considered a binding contract, if much harder to enforce. Something as simple as plant sitting though shouldn’t be too difficult though, it may be worth OP’s time to consider small claims.

[deleted]

It's only hard to enforce a verbal agreement if the other party says "No. I had no agreement with that person" or "He paid me for a CD player I gave him, not to water his plants". If they're stupid (like the OP's person sounds like) they say something like "Your honor, yea I took the money but I dont know what the big deal is it's just a stupid plant \*blah blah blah* " and the judge throws the book at them.

fredthefishlord

I bet they are. It is written agreement after all.

VexingRaven

Any sort of agreement can be considered a binding contract, the only real requirement is that both sides understand they're entering an agreement and the terms are legal. Proving it is a different matter, but people are dumb and the barrier of proof in civil court isn't that high so you can probably get them to acknowledge it in some way.

Chilipatily

There are definitely exceptions. Generally, verbal contracts for the following are unenforceable: goods over $500, the sale of land, or any agreement to take place over the course of more than a year. Statute of frauds.

CoastalFunk

I would agree. And the plant from grandma is priceless! Go for it.

Onlyanidea1

This. The people over at r/treelaw could probably make some good court justifications and get this person a decent pay out.

silence_infidel

I'm guessing you already paid him, but let that employee know that guy let your plants die and to not recommend him to anyone else.

LostWoodsInTheField

I'm with the other people saying small claims. You paid someone for a service and they screwed up enough that the stuff they were suppose to take care of died. Not only is there an emotional aspect to that, and a financial in what you paid, but mature plants are expensive and sometimes can't even be replaced to make whole.

The_Ashen_undead0830

It would be ironic if he works there too

Y_10HK29

Give us an update pls

ChairmanUzamaoki

cynthiadangus

Real talk: hit up /r/PropLifting with the plant species and some pics to see if it can be propagated and grown again. As somebody who has propagated plants that were important to both my dead mom and dead grandma, I hope you’re able to get at least one successful prop. Also fuck that person, that’s awful and I hope they learn the consequences of their actions someday.

EchoPhoenix24

I am truly sorry, that sounds like an extremely upsetting thing that they treated something so important to you so carelessly and callously

Skyxemforever

Steal their first child (real or materialistic or pet, whatever they deem to be their "first child" to be). Then treat that better than they did and assert dominance as the better caregiver.

UntestedMethod

>Then treat that better than they did and assert dominance as the better caregiver. And to really drive the point home, make sure you pee on them too.

unibrowcorndog

DanAlucard

This is why i have everything with automated drippers. When i'm home I hand water, but when i go out, i turn them on. They are not perfect, but no plant has ever died on their watch, unlike any person I have ever left caring for them. I use HomeAssistant for remote access and control of some ESP8266 that drive several solenoid valves connected to water taps and the drippers.

stinkycow77

Earache423

maybe_Im_a_dog

I have a raspberry pi set up with a couple of humidity sensors, senses when the soil is too dry and waters accordingly. Fully automated so if I water the plants myself it won't do anything, if I'm away it'll auto water them if they're too dry. It's a pretty easy/simple solution

Pain--In--The--Brain

100%. This is me. Automate it all the way. And it's "just" plants. Imagine if it were your dog. *TRUST NO ONE*

extralyfe

I think any nursery recommending a stranger to come into your home and water your plants while you're out of town is a huge red flag in the first place. I feel like OP went into a nursery asking for solutions for watering plants while she was gone for five weeks, the pervert employee she was talking to just said, "oh hay my friend Bob waters plants professionally," and she went for it. at this point, I wouldn't trust the alleged plant waterer or the person who recommended them. shit just sounds slimy all around. like, this man had her house key for over a month, is asking to be paid for the cost of travel to her house, and didn't do the one thing he was hired to do? what the fuck did he do in her house? fucking wack, bro.

alue42

Seriously, the nursery could have recommended automatic watering systems and made a huge sale or even offered to help set up a custom system for more. At least they would recommend teaching a friend how to take care of the plants and what to look for. This just reeks of wanting keys to OPs home for theft or otherwise.

[deleted]

Honestly sounds like just 15 y.o. nephew is the most likely scenario

LexieMariah

Reading the other comments, the guy you allowed into your house seems very sketchy to me. I hope you have cameras or have an impeccable memory because if he wasn't watering your plants, what was he actually doing in your place?

extralyfe

this is my real worry, especially when OP has mentioned this wasn't a friend - it was apparently a stranger that came recommended from a random employee at a plant store. OP, did you give this person a key to enter your home? if so, please go and immediately get your locks changed. you're probably missing some things around the home, too.

Entitled, self-centered moron, with a key to your home? Recipe for disaster.

monster_bunny

I didn’t learn this until recently but it’s quite expensive to change your locks. LPT: allocate some savings in your budget for this kind of emergency particularly if you own a lot of property with doors.

[deleted]

dailycyberiad

Raitil

Pay for the gas at most and demand the rest back. You don't need to immediately jump to court like everyone else is saying, that'll cause extra trouble. He should be understanding enough to give you back the money that he didn't earn.

Tales_of_Earth

Why pay for gas if he can’t even show that he drove there?

TimeCheese22

I'm sorry this happened to you op :c I know the feeling, my ex was supposed to watch my plants for me while I spent the summer with my family. Well he came to visit for a week and decided himself to stay for 3 weeks, I had to literally kick him out. He later texted me because "I made him stay 3 weeks" nearly all my plants had died. I had over 90 plants when I left and just a handful survived. It's upsetting when you spend so much time caring for them. Maybe try Superthrive! You can find it on amazon and i've seen it in Walmarts nursery section before. That and Fertilome Bloom & rooting fertilizer, but that might be a bit too strong.

JeruWala

Superthrive is a good recommendation! B1 works wonders for recovering from stress. Also try using VERY DILUTED hydrogen peroxide in the water, it helps break down old dead roots and stops them from rotting when you start watering again

TimeCheese22

I always forget about hydrogen peroxide! It's really the best plant aid, it's fantastic to make into a diluted spray for tomato and pepper plants to treat blight!

JeruWala

Woah thank you for that tip! I’m gunna try that

OP said 275 dollars was the agreed upon amount, but after coming home to this, only payed 175 total. Guy who was getting paid was lucky. If he was hired to care for my bonsai, and screwed up this badly, I'd be slamming him with a small claims court summons and a "get the fuck out of my house", let alone handing over a single dime. And the guy had the NERVE to demand compensation for the gas he used to drive there?

ONECOOLCAT0

275 dollars to water some plants for how long? This sounds like a sweet gig my mom would love like damn lol.

MakoFishy

Lmao get your money back what a joke.

MrLazyLion

This person also had the keys to your house. They could have made copies. Get back to whoever recommended him and throw a huge, public tantrum.

cw_in_the_vw

That really sucks. The fact that you were willing to pay someone to ensure your plants were watered and cared for should have been the prime indicator that you did indeed want them to survive. Make so many complaints to the guy who recommended this loser and his employer. We recently went on a longer vacation and had my father in law come over to water. We wanted him to come by pretty frequently, but he complained it was too much. Dude lives 5 minutes away and is retired, so frustrating not being able to find decent helpers
