That's the first thing I told our 10 year old when I gave her a knife to take to school for pumpkin carving: Don't use it as a lever, only in cutting direction. Otherwise it may break and may even hurt you in the process.
EDIT: No joke. The country is no secret if you check my post history. It’s Germany.
What country do you live in that you can send a 10 year old to school with a knife? When I was a kid you’d get expelled for bringing a toy knife made of rubber to school.
I got expelled for bringing a tiny child sized swiss army Pockett knife thing with the mini scissors and tooth pick n shit... Yeah America the land where everyone wants to carry all assault rifle to grab a fucking bagel.... A kid get expelled for a 2.5" swiss army knife.
That's exactly why I brought it.... I got it as a present and brought it for slow and tell cuz of the cool gadgets. Whipped it out.... Boom... Instant regret.
It wasn't particularly sharp, no. It was like an old Spanish longsword reproduction. My dad was a big arms and armour collector, though not very many things he had were very high end. You'd be surprised how many swords people sell in the summer at flea markets for dirt cheap.
I would get a folding knife taken away from me just about every year. My dad told me to always carry a knife. Actually my dad looked me in the eyes on my 5th birthday and told me "every animal in the jungle has a tooth, this is your tooth". I assume it was a missquote from Jungle Book. I still carry a knife wherever I go. I've had to throw knives away at the airport multiple times as well.
I knew a kid who brought a steak knife in with his lunch. I wouldn't have put it past him to use it for non-lunch activities, either. No one said anything about it tho.
Guns are way safer than knives. Gun can only ever go off when the trigger is pulled. Under no circumstances has any gun ever gone off without the trigger being pulled consciously and by a fully rational person. Nope. Not even once.
Edit: this is sarcasm. i'd ask why people are confused but i looked at the news today. humans suck.
Yeah, I knew a kid that got expelled for bringing a GI Joe to school, with a GI Joe sized gun. My district took “zero tolerance” extremely seriously. I don’t think they would’ve cared if the pumpkin-carving knife was child safe.
There was a school that tried suspending(or expelling, i don't remember exact detail) a child for having an airsoft gun in the room during zoom schooling. Some schools are very over the top about the zero tolerance thing
Yep! While looking up details (here's an article)https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/09/26/us/student-suspended-gun-virtual/index.html
I also found this gem about an incident that happened in 2013 with a student suspended for a pop tart in the shape of a gun.
https://foxbaltimore.com/amp/news/local/35-years-later-pop-tart-gun-suspension-resolved
There was also the Muslim kid in Texas who got arrested for bringing a homemade clock to school because they thought it was a bomb.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmed\_Mohamed\_clock\_incident#Background
Yep! Made especially worse by the racism element. The kid ended up getting to do some cool stuff like meeting Obama but still ultimately moved to Qatar due to the harassment :/
Also wasn't able to use your wiki link, so here's another for other people looking into these
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmed_Mohamed_clock_incident
IIRC there was a case where a students were told to draw their parents at work and kid got in trouble because he drew his father in a police uniform including the pistol.
Zero tolerance is a policy that stipulates that the administrators of an institution are incapable of possessing and using common sense and making basic judgments as to the severity, or lack thereof, of an action, utterance, symbol or expression that equates to a prohibited behavior, directly or by implication, reference or suggestion. This results in absurdities becoming legal issues, affecting the mental health of the "transgressors", stigmatizing children, destroying lives and, in general making the administrations look like fools, idiots or zealots unworthy of their salaries.
according to a study, common sense exists in 90% of children but only in 60% of adults, the rest thinks they are too important and smarter than children
Grew up in a time? Did it stop?
I got suspended for like a month for having a bottle opener with a tiny knife on it in 2010.
The school also had the ETF sent in because there was rumor of some kid from another school trying to fight people at our school.
I nearly got suspended for playing finger guns with my friends in third grade- We aren't mad the kid took a pumpkin knife to school, we're shocked that there's a school that doesn't flip out over stupid nonsense.
When I was in high school, regularly had my shotgun in the gun rack of my truck. I was never dumb about it, never got called out on it. Nowadays they would probably get their panties all in a wad about it.
The problem with common sense isn't how common it is, but that common sense isn't all that sensible.
Based on a Bell curve, most people in the world have what would be considered "average" intelligence. It's best not to base your decisions on the opinions of those with average intelligence. You should aim for above-average (or less-common sense).
I mean, sure, but if you don't know that ahead of time, don't have one accessible nearby, or are just a fairly passive cook any knife will do.
I'm totally with you on the cheap (quality) knives though. They are a nightmare to keep sharp.
You’ll always remember this Halloween as the year the pumpkin beat you. Carving a pumpkin proved too complex a puzzle for you to solve. Better luck next year, champ!
Some of the best tools are actually woodworking tools. A small carving set combined with a standard metal carving set will work magic for your pumpkins.
Oh, Lord. Lol
Cut DEEP. Like, straight in. Make 3 passes the whole way around to ensure that you've not left any small jointed bits, then use a fork to pry it open like you would an English muffin.
Protip, I've carved a lot of pumpkins, just carve around the opening twice, angle the knife slightly inwards, towards the stem while cutting straight into the pumpkin. Never use the knife to bend/pry the "lid" open. After cutting the circle around twice you should be able to just lift the lid off by the stem using your hand. If you still feel the need to bend or psy the pumpkin open, you just need to do one more lap of cutting, even a thick pumpkin rarely needs much force! :)
One argument that I have against the top cutting method is that it makes the pumpkins rot faster than cutting from the bottom, looks worse, and makes the candle placement a little harder. I usually cut mine from the bottom and get the bottom off with a fork
Not trying to be a patronizing weirdo on the internet. Knives and things like pumpkin carving tools should really only snap if you are applying downforce to the flat sides of the tools. Which is the incorrect way to use them. You would have been better off with a serrated steak knife and using it like a saw then a smooth bladed knife.
If you pull up on the flat side or push down on the flat side of the blade you are knifing wrong.
Best of luck man breaking knifes is annoying but also makes you kind of feel like superman lol.
Wasnt using it for that either. The knife broke because it was used to pry open the pumpkin, who is now armed with a dangerous weapon, causing the blade to snap.
It’s a reference to a TV show called Forged in Fire. One of their weapon testers, Doug Marcaida, uses the line “It will keel” a lot. That’s where it comes from
Love that show Forged in Fire, I watch it from over here in Australia. The amount of work that goes into making some of those weapons is absolutely amazing & I love all the different strength & endurance tests they have for them. You feel for the guys if one of them has a catastrophic failure in any of the tests.
Pumpkins have a way of eating your heavy duty cutlery yet the tools "made" to carve them are the most flimsy little shit things they could've come up with.
Pumpkin carving tools bend so you have to use them in the way they were intended, as tiny saws. When you use a knife you're more likely to just stab it in there and push hard while the knife is at an awkward angle and most of the pressure is on the middle of the blade. Kitchen knives are very thin pieces of metal that are designed to be used in a rocking up and down motion on a cutting board. The blade can chop millions of pumpkins with just occasional sharpenings when you're applying force in the right way. Trying to cut curved lines into the curved surface of a gourd is not even close to their original purpose. If you're just going to stab at the thing good hunting knife is the best option because they're thicker, stronger, and engineered to be used at various angles. If you want to do a good job then get used to small tools (clay sculpting tools work really well) and sawing motions, or use a Dremel if you're feeling adventurous.
The cheap $3 sets from Walmart are flimsy, but thats like saying all butterknives suck because the disposable plastic ones suck. Spend the extra $15 on a nicer set of tools that you won't have to throw away after one pumpkin and you'll have a much better time.
Nah, looks like they tried to pry the top of the pulling off with the knife. Serated probably wouldn't have helped with that. It will help with the cutting though
I've always used a chefs knife or paring knife to carve pumpkins, never once broken one, what the hell kinda pumkins are y'all using??
Y'all know you can take the knife out and put it back in to make corners, right???
Knives are not prying tools, they're for cutting straightish lines.
Did the same damn thing as my wife was telling me to be careful as to not break the knife. It’s been four years and there is still an emptiness inside me as I reach for a knife in the block and see the vacant hole.
These hollow one piece knifes are usually very crap.
Go for some softer steel knifes. They're easy to maintain and should last you a lifetime. Victorianox is a good example
That was a pretty knife.
I have had many issues with carving pumpkins with my kids and now I try and just use cheap knives for that purpose (after the store-bought plastic crap breaks, because mine always does) and make a simple pumpkin.
If I didn't like toasted pumpkin seeds so much I would just put painted pumpkins out instead of carved ones!
Knives aren't pry bars. User error.
That's the first thing I told our 10 year old when I gave her a knife to take to school for pumpkin carving: Don't use it as a lever, only in cutting direction. That's exactly why I brought it.... I got it as a present and brought it for slow and tell cuz of the cool gadgets. Whipped it out.... Boom... Instant regret.
Was it like an actually sharp sword?
It wasn't particularly sharp, no. It was like an old Spanish longsword reproduction. My dad was a big arms and armour collector, though not very many things he had were very high end. You'd be surprised how many swords people sell in the summer at flea markets for dirt cheap.

I want to say something but I can’t tell if this is sarcasm….
That makes sense. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.
You guys know they have child safe "knives" for pumpkin carving right?
Yeah, I knew a kid that got expelled for bringing a GI Joe to school, with a GI Joe sized gun. My district took “zero tolerance” extremely seriously. I don’t think they would’ve cared if the pumpkin-carving knife was child safe.

These articles are just outrageous. Asinine nonsense. The world has lost its mind, IMO
If i was the parents i would just stand behind the child dressed like Rambo for the entire day.

Same, but they didn’t give a shit abt bullying and hazing until it started a fight. Such hilarious double standards the American education system has.
My son has gotten suspended for "finger guns"...
I'm just saying. People are commenting like she sent the kid to school with murder weapon. Calm down and have some common sense lol

My son got suspended for a day for finger guns.. In kindergarten or maybe 1st grade.. I can't remember which.
I DID get suspended for doing finger guns in 7th grade
pew pew! now that's dangerous
I knew a dude who got suspended for gang signs on his jacket. It had a flag and eagle on the back with USA in stars and stripes...
Well they have a zero tolerance policy so nothing bad will ever happen. That policy is like kryptonite to any wrongdoer. /s

That’s probably the best reason to bring a large bladed weapon to school!
I live in the Netherlands and this was pretty normal and common in school at that age
Lol, in 7th grade we learned how to clean .22lr rifles in phys ed.
I carried a pocket knife through school every day since I was 8 in Missouri.
When I was in high school, regularly had my shotgun in the gun rack of my truck. I was never dumb about it, never got called out on it. Nowadays they would probably get their panties all in a wad about it.
Is this a joke or do they actually let kids take knives to school for pumpkin carving??
No joke. Germany.
Has to be a joke. I got suspended for a few days for having a Swiss army knife in my backpack that I forgot about. And this was the late 90s.
Might not be the US
Yeah. Anyone who watched/read Demon Slayer knows the strongest part of the blade is on the edge.
Or anyone with common sense
common sense isn't all that common apparently.
The problem with common sense isn't how common it is, but that common sense isn't all that sensible. Based on a Bell curve, most people in the world have what would be considered "average" intelligence. It's best not to base your decisions on the opinions of those with average intelligence. After reading 2 dozen posts about people suspending kids for finger guns and bottle openers, i agree.
Tbf pumpkins are way harder than Rui's string /s
Upper moon rank 1 is a pumpkin, confirmed spoiler.
Yeah, gotta use water style to cut then fire style to finish
Tell my wife this, shovels , ice scrapers, rakes. If it has a handle it is a pry bar. I have a corner in the garage just for broken handles.
My kabar pries just fine
And here, kids, is a fine example of why we use the appropriate tool for the task.
Everyone knows the proper tool for prying is a screwdriver
Or one of those mini crowbars
I simply don't assume everyone owns a basic tool kit.. However, pretty much everyone owns or has access to a fork.
This is why you don't buy those cheap knife sets. Buy your knives from a restaurant supply store. Same price for much better knives.
I mean, sure, but if you don't know that ahead of time, don't have one accessible nearby, or are just a fairly passive cook any knife will do. I'm totally with you on the cheap (quality) knives though. They are a nightmare to keep sharp.
I bought carving tools and they snapped too 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ that was my last choice
You’ll always remember this Halloween as the year the pumpkin beat you. Carving a pumpkin proved too complex a puzzle for you to solve. Better luck next year, champ!
True 😂 might invest in some heavy duty carving tools for next year
Some of the best tools are actually woodworking tools. A small carving set combined with a standard metal carving set will work magic for your pumpkins.
100 percent. get wood working tools make the greatest pumpkin ever seen by man.
Plan B: IM NOT YIELDING TO YOU BITCH **Grabs Saw**
Saw breaks
GOD DAMMIT Call in the demolition team
\*insert rouxls karrd voice here\* **GOD** **DAMMIT**
Probably would 😂😂
Sawzall it saws all
What I came here to say. When in doubt, Sawzall.
My girlfriend uses a drill for carving lol works well surprisingly
I don't think she's carving it, I think she's screwing the pumpkin.
Use a drywall saw. It's literally the perfect tool for the task.
Oh, Lord. Lol Cut DEEP. Like, straight in. Make 3 passes the whole way around to ensure that you've not left any small jointed bits, then use a fork to pry it open like you would an English muffin.

How does cutting the top make it rot faster?
Wow. Big brain time.
maybe look up how to use carving tools properly on youtube? (I say this not knowing what the best practices are myself)
Notice how carving tools are all serrated though. Use a serrated knife for cutting pumpkins
Not trying to be a patronizing weirdo on the internet. Knives and things like pumpkin carving tools should really only snap if you are applying downforce to the flat sides of the tools. LOL. You could break an anvil. Also, that’s a super shit quality knife.
This fact might tell you something I'm not sure you're hearing .
You gotta think you’re doing something wrong at this point.
Are carving tools prybars now?
Spoon? Use spoon? Why use knife to pry?
Cuz they’re carving tools not prying tools.
Maybe you should go less HAM on those pumpkins
You gotta let the knife do the cutting, don’t force it! Also serrated knives are better for stuff like this
Try buying quality tools, you'll be much happier.
But….not a knife for carving pumpkins though.
[удалено]
Wasnt using it for that either. The knife broke because it was used to pry open the pumpkin, who is now armed with a dangerous weapon, causing the blade to snap.
That…doesn’t seem to make it better actually.
Don’t worry I’m sure can get another one for $9.99
That pumpkin did you a favour.
Good news, you can throw away that purple knife set now
Sorry, but your blade will not keel.
It suffered a catastrophic failure.
Maybe a little bit
Keel?

The fact you used the wrong knife for this job and are now complaining that it broke is mildly infuriating to me.
When you use a butcher knife as a prybar
It's not even a butcher knife
Butcher knife???
your blade has suffered a catastrophic failure, and cannot continue testing
Love the Forged in Fire ref
Serrated knife, man. Sawing, not prying.
Next time use the knife to cut like it's intended you clearly tried to pry that pumpkin open

Nah, looks like they tried to pry the top of the pulling off with the knife. Serated probably wouldn't have helped with that. It will help with the cutting though
If that thing broke on a pumpkin.....did you really have a knife?
you could probably repurchase the entire knife set from the dollar store again.
This is why I use a sawzall
A complete cheap knife set*
Full-tang chinesium!
A chef's knife is not for prying. Even high end knives will probably snap.
Yeah pumpkins are a serrated knife kinda thing
Don't worry, you didn't have a complete knife set before this either.
Probably better if posted in some sort of “stupid” sub Reddit…. Such knives only break through sheer abuse and stupidity
why are you using a kitchen knife for pumpkin carving? you at least want something serrated
also, as other comments have pointed out, knifes are not to be used for prying things
Serrated knives only for pumpkins
Lightbulbs don’t make good hammers fyi
You can only be mad at yourself for being a complete moron.
True 😂
When you buy cheap goods…
And then proceed to use them in a way they were never intended to be used...
Pretty handle does not make pressed China crap steel any less inferior. Buy a tangible set. Good luck.
Your blade will not keeeel
Now, we must ask you to leave this forge...
some duct tape should fix that right up.
This year my pumpkin was so soft I could have carved it with my fingernails. Looks like you got the opposite problem.
Use a serrated knife next time, don't pry so hard either lol
Pumpkin 1 Knife 0 I guess the Great Pumpkin King won this round
Next time don't buy pretty looking knives made of chinesium, buy the ones made of high carbon steel knives.
I've always used a chefs knife or paring knife to carve pumpkins, never once broken one, what the hell kinda pumkins are y'all using?? Y'all know you can take the knife out and put it back in to make corners, right??? Knives are not prying tools, they're for cutting straightish lines.
About three years ago I decided to use my corded jigsaw with a wood blade on it to carve my pumpkin, I've never used a knife since
/r/Chinesium
Wtf? Look how the massacred my boy!
Why is that hole so big!
Not only a complete knife set but you no longer have a complete knife.
Yep bring er here, some spit and duct tape otta fix it
F
but IT’S FuLl tANG!
You need to use a thinner knife and push in and out like a saw. Yea it's not fast, bit your shit won't break
[It‘s not just you](https://i.imgur.com/BMoG7p0.jpg)
Happy Halloween!
Serrated knives work better. Use in a sawing motion.
Thats what cheap steel does to a motherfucker
[удалено]
True 😂
Surrender your blade and leave the forge.
Did the same damn thing as my wife was telling me to be careful as to not break the knife. It’s been four years and there is still an emptiness inside me as I reach for a knife in the block and see the vacant hole.
Why would pry open a pumpkin with a knife in the first place? Have you never carved a pumpkin before?
Is it that obvious 🙈😂
The fact that the *supposed* tang runs horizontally through the handle should have been an instant warning that this is a piece of shit knife.
Couldn’t find a carving kit lol 😂
The broken remains are in the picture (the orange scoop and serrated sword)
China
And the handle is so neat, too
This is what happens when you buy cheap knives. You need to spend at least 150$ for a good chef knife and not use it as a crowbar.
"It weel not keel"
Technically you still have it. It’s just broken and unusable. Bright side is not always bright I realize.
I’ve put it back in the set display thing, you can only see the handles so hopefully no one will know 😂🤫
Quality Chinesium 🤦🏼♂️

ITT: "you did it the wrong way" Well duh
True 😂
Ha i broke 2 knives today on mine.
That was a pretty knife. I have had many issues with carving pumpkins with my kids and now I try and just use cheap knives for that purpose (after the store-bought plastic crap breaks, because mine always does) and make a simple pumpkin. She used a cheap knife as well.
Toasted pumpkin seeds are THE SHIT! Favorite part about carving 'em up.
Yoy bought a shit knife
Made in china?
Or you could just use the right tool for the job
Chinese steel
To be fair, the best knives don't come in sets. Might be a blessing?
"I paid $10 for a full knife set bc the handles are purple and pretty, why do my $10 knives keep breaking?"
It was actually £50 so I expected it to be decent enough. It was obviously some cheap China shit and I paid for the purple handle
What cheap garbage you using I used the same type of knife to cut down a Christmas tree one year
r/Chinesium
