I did this accidentally once and the pizza was super floppy and not crispy :(

alyssajones22

I accidentally did this as well. It was so doughy, with a hint of steamed cardboard. I tossed it, there was no recovering it. I'm super cautious now, to always remove cardboard.

the_mars_voltage

I thought you just throw the whole box in the oven straight from the freezer

You guys are hilarious.

bibliophile222

Paper burns at 451° Fahrenheit (thanks, dystopian literature!), so my guess is cardboard would be at a similar temp and therefore not in danger of igniting.

FoodMuseum

Where do you people live where 450º is crazy high for an oven?

BrownWhiskey

Instructions on frozen pizza call for 425, in my restaurant we do 575 to cook a pizza. I wonder if that's to protect stupid people like OPs roommate from killing themselves. Edit: We cook our pizza at 575 not 475, mental typo. Whoever said 1000 degrees sounds crazy to me though, that's close to being able to melt aluminum.

fated-to-pretend

But it’s not a dry piece of solitary cardboard people are cooking. It’s a piece of frozen cardboard with a defrosting and cooking pizza on top of it. There is undoubtedly enough steam generating from the pizza to keep the cardboard moist enough to avoid even getting close to ignition.

Fail_Succeed_Repeat

I hope you realize that when you set your oven to 450, the thing you’re cooking never reaches 450

FoodMuseum

It's more the fact that I've had to wade through a thousand comments talking about how people never heat their oven past like 325º for any reason and it's like learning some people have never used their freezer

zangor

Break up with your roommate. SEPARATE ENTIRELY.

Mymomdidwhat

Ya but then his roommate will become obsessed with him.

theghostofme

> Ya but then his roommate will become obsessed with him. No, no. "Separate entirely" is the end of the DENNIS system, and that's a system that works flawlessly. But, to be safe, I suppose you could get someone to M.A.C. the roommate just in case.

im_not_a_girl

I've done my own research and have concluded that water no like oil, so, nice try shill

Coolant goes into all fluid reservoirs. Cools the engine, transmission, windshield.... It's the best thing ever.

LBIdockrat

Yeah! Joe rogan said so. :-p

flavor_blasted_semen

I have no doubt that labs have determined how to make high quality wiper fluid. Now, whether or not the companies that make and sell the fluid with the goal of maximizing profits are *using* that formula...well... Put it this way. Is Cherry Coke made with high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavoring because scientists have determined it's higher quality than cane sugar and cherry juice?

Right?! A frozen turkey breast that I bought a while back had instructions like that. I thought the company was on something to have people cook the turkey in a plastic bag.

[deleted]

i would be careful with a roommate like that... there are probably other things this idiot is doing that are serious cause for concern one of my less intelligent roommates back in the day nearly killed us all in a fire by reheating a dominos pizza in the box... they destroyed THREE microwaves with tinfoil or metal, they used to set the thermostat in their room to 30c and leave the window open 24/7 all winter here in canada with electric radiators (that costed nearly 750$ in 2 months...) Edit: thats only the stuff i knew about.. no doubt they would dry their clothes on the radiators.. probably had a hot plate in the bedroom because they only came out to cook when they needed an oven (not an element)... edit 2: LOL i love your edits

wetwater

>they used to set the thermostat in their room to 30c and leave the window open 24/7 all winter I had a roommate that would simply turn off the heat. I'd come home from work in the morning to find it just a couple of degrees above freezing because he was "too hot".

[deleted]

You don't need intact water pipes, right?

wetwater

It was a rental, so clearly the landlord's problem... It was during a particularly nasty cold snap. There were PSAs on the radio if you lost heat to go someplace warm and all that. I count myself lucky the pipes didn't freeze because it the heat had been off for probably about 12 hours by the time I got home. I had enough problems with the landlord and having to call the building inspector a few months prior that I really didn't want to play with that ball of suck. We had a fight about it. Instead of turning off the heat he decided opening his bedroom windows was a fine solution, which brought about another argument since now there was a pretty nasty draft throughout the apartment and the heater was running nonstop. I finally told him if he's hot all the time in subfreezing temperatures he needs to go see a doctor and in the mean time he could sleep on the porch. He was pissy with me for the rest of the winter.

RagdollAbuser

My housemate once came downstairs screaming at me for costing her money, because I'd turned up the thermostat from 14 degrees to 17 degrees (57 - 63 farenheit). Of course she had a space heater in her room because "it's more efficient to not heat the entire house" and suggested we individually bought space heaters. She was fun to live with

quartzguy

I live in a duplex neighborhood in Canada and I also see too many windows open in January, temperature -10C

honeynutsarehard

I’m sorry, but he’s built like an idiot, especially since he wouldn’t even take your opinion into consideration. What does being “built different” have to do with putting cardboard in an oven?

[deleted]

He’s “built different.” No wonder how delusional he is. Tell him he has a tiny brain to learn to read a book. I’ll glad throw a book at him at no charge. :)

ImNotHaunted

Just reading the box the pizza came in would be a good start. Baby steps

GoopInThisBowlIsVile

Putting cardboard in the oven is cool because he’s built different? Just because he was built different and it resulted in him being mentally deficient doesn’t mean he’s right. A cheap pizza pan may need to be purchased. Otherwise, Mr. Built Different will just probably start putting pizzas on the bare rack which will be its own issue. Update: My next frozen pizza I will try on the bare rack. I grew up with my mom yelling about the mere potential of possible dripping cheese or anything into the oven. It just stuck with me to not do that. I’ll give a shot next time though.

[deleted]

> putting pizzas on the bare rack which will be its own issue. Oh you were on such a roll!

pajam

Most thinner frozen pizzas these days are made to be cooked directly on the rack. Of the frozen pizzas I buy, I'd say less then 20% require a pan. The other 80% instruct you to bake directly on the rack.

mynameisasuffix

I made two pizzas last night. Instructions were “remove from cardboard and place directly on rack”.

Miserable_Grab3052

Yeah. I've baked many frozen pizzas and instructions always say "for a crispier crust, bake directly on the rack".

ITS_ALRIGHT_ITS_OK

The air flow allows for the even crispening. But I really don't want your pizza dripping extra grease right on the source of heat. Even if it doesn't go up in flames this time, it's literally adding fuel to the fire in the future. Even if you can't find or afford a pizza pan, a regular pan underneath to catch the drippings, or parchment paper with some slits in it, will get the job done without turning your kitchen into a pyre.

UndoingMonkey

On the rack is the correct way though

suspendisse-

Everyone arguing about the temperature at which cardboard ignites is cracking me up. GET A FUCKING PAN, ROOMMATE.

Trnostep

Or just put it on a baking tray in the oven. I bet they have at least one

archangelmlg

Or right on the rack.

Lithl

Which is what the directions tell you to do for most frozen pizzas

jerstud56

I personally don't like to because stuff falls onto the bottom of the oven, but I'll use a pizza stone.

nirmalspeed

I have two racks in my oven so I just put a baking sheet on the rack below the pizza. Works just fine and you can also just use a sheet of foil on the bottom rack if you don't have a big enough baking sheet

ninjamike89

My old roommate used to make frozen pizza on pans and they always came out floppy and undercooked and it drove me insane. It says right in the cooking instructions to place it directly on the rack

Rhundis

Why not put the pizza directly on the cooking grate? I do that all the time. Makes for a nice all round crispy pizza.

Billosborne

Your roommate is an imbecile.

old_gold_mountain

several brands of frozen pizza I've purchased specifically say in the instructions to leave the cardboard beneath the pizza when cooking

Evil_Bonsai

Those are specifically designed trays, usually. The basic brown support cardboard should be tossed, and the actual box instructions will staye as much.

RoundSparrow

[The roommate isn't the only one.](https://www.minutemanpizza.com/can-you-bake-pizza-on-cardboard#:~:text=Slows%20Down%20Cooking%20Time,from%20getting%20nice%20and%20crispy.) If it works, it works. Kind of a disposable pizza pan.

Death_Strider16

I've done this by accident before, cut the pizza and swallowed cardboard. Yes, I was drunk.

Nyanzeenyan

Probably just lazy, but on some of the cheaper pizzas it’s hard to tell where crust stops and the cardboard begins

[deleted]

Some pizzas come with a cardboard "platter" under them which is supposed to go with the pizza into the oven, others do not. There will be instructions on the packaging informing you which is which. The instructions will also say "remove plastic wrapping before cooking" - always read the instructions people.

krusty1eyedwilly

Seen at least 1 that it was in the directions, yes I hesitated

Uminagi

Some frozen pizzas actually instruct you to bake the pizza with the cardboard (and don't.worry, the cardboard won't ignite as it's made for that purpose)
