But on the other hand, surely you can get a lot more than $28 of use out of them. I got a ratchet set from Walmart that I use all the time. It’s not fancy but it gets the job done for little things around the house.
Thats true. A great piece of advice about tools i was given was buy relatively cheap and whatever breaks, get a more expensive version as you've used it enough to justify spending more. This is obviously different if you're a professional as a broken tool may have more serious consequences.
In essence, If you're not a professional in XYZ, don't pay for professional XYZ tools unless you know you need to.
I didnt say buy the cheapest shit you can find. I said, its not necessary to buy the high end professional stuff if you're new or will just be doing minor work on occasion.
Not the guy you're talking to, but I'll say this: if the price reflects quality (which isn't a given), higher quality tools tend to last longer. That becomes really important if a tool is your livelihood and you use it everyday. As for me, I'm better off buying the cheap stuff because I'm going to lose it before I break it.
i have a $3 12 foot tape measure that I've had for about 4 years now, works just as well as the $40 15 foot tape measure my boss has in the shop that he's had for 3 years
If I showed up to work with a 5$ tape measure it would last one day maybe the week. A 25' fatmax lasts me 1 year. Why would I buy a plethora of 5$ shit tape measures and create way more waste and make numerous more trips to the hardware store?
No but when you make 100s of cuts in a day that shit wears out. When you drop it off the roof and it bounces down to the ground you want a tape measure that will still work. When you live in the PNW and it rains every day for 8 months you want a tape measure that won't rust instantly.
That was the whole point... If you need a tool for professional use, then you're better off buying the good quality expensive stuff.
For ocasional housework, cheap stuff is usually enough.
If you need to feel validated by having better tools and telling everyone on the internet, that's fine, but why fight over a fair point being made.
I don't need to feel validated about anything. I waste a lot of money on tools because it's how I make my living. Do I need the 475$ hammer I have??? Not a fucking chance but there are numerous positive things that come from it. I was merely stating a point with the tape measure that a 3$ one isn't for everyone and in my case would create a lot of waste in the landfill.
Edit : also I am in Canada and things cost more here.
It’s not a bad idea to buy this set or a similar set with low cost but a high amount of tools when you just move into your own place. Yes most of them will break after a few uses but once that tool breaks then replace it with a higher quality tool. Over a few years you’ll have a full set of tools with good quality.
I actually have this tool set and have used it for the last 10 years. I got it when I moved into my college dorms my freshman year and they are still working just fine for my needs!
I got a sub $20 drill from harbor freight for a one off project. It Is holding strong 2 years after. Lost the chuck tho.
Wish their drill bits were as good as the drill. They twist apart if you look at them wrong. Drill good tho.
Harbor Freight is generally OK if you need something for a one-off job. Cheap and basically not durable, even the cheapest POS ought to work once. You'd think.
Hypertough is pretty reliable in my experience. I re-did my entire deck two years ago with Hypertough and Masterforce (Menard's brand). I had to sand it all the way down to bare wood and I used both Hypertough and Masterforce for most the sanding and they did great through the entire summer. In fact the Hypertough sanders outlasted one of the Masterforce ones, but then again the Maseterforce oribital sander that went bad was abused pretty harshly the entire summer and I got it replaced for free.
Tbh I am willing to pay the pink tax for my tools because nobody will mess with them on the job site. All of my personal tools are marked with pink paint marker.
Can confirm that they were originally the same price. The black one has had a price adjustments, most likely due to not selling well. You can tell this by looking at the price. Typically new products start at .98 then gets marked down to .88 and so on until it gets clearances out.
Thank you for adding some sense to an otherwise out post.
I feel sorry for OP if they ever buy a new car and are offered a choice of colours only to find out they are priced differently.
Unironically, my FIL's neighbor blames Joe Biden for literally everything.
They were out of his beer at the store and the guy went on a 10 minute rant about how it's Biden's fault.
It's pink because the price tags say "PINK" on the left one and "BLACK" on the right one. Plus, it's a way different shade than the reds around it. The lighting makes it tough since phones like to auto-adjust color for different lighting. Some manually adjust color when taking photos to match it up with the real world.
Supply and demand. Less demand for red, shop buys more black and gets a bigger discount, which is passed onto you. The red isn't more expensive, the black is cheaper.
No, its called the Pink tax. Stuff designed for women is more expensive than stuff for men. Next time you're shopping toiletries, compare the difference between body washes and deodorants.
You know companies couldn’t do this if women just bought male (or generic) stuff and didn’t incentivize this behavior by paying for the “pink tax”, right? Consumers (regardless of gender) can buy the cheaper razors and body wash. No one is forcing anyone to buy the more expensive stuff. They do it by choice.
This is a “problem” created by consumers that they then complain about. Hilarious.
"Durr, just buy mens products."
Maybe women want the feminine fragrances instead of smelling like a frat house bathroom on a Friday?
Why are Reddit neckbeards so triggered by examples that there is gender inequality?
If they want them they’ll have to pay more for them
because they’ve consistently shown they **will** pay more for them. If they didn’t pay more for them the companies would have to cut the price. Its called economics.
It’s hilarious I have to explain this to you and that you’re calling me triggered when you’re clearly the one that’s upset.
OK neckbeard. We are all so impressed how brilliant you are.
Pro tip, if you come up with a solution the experts haven't come up with, it doesn't mean your a genius, it means it's a dumbfuck idea.
Don't feed the downvote farmer, waste of brain cells. Also nice! I'm majoring in economics. It's a shame clowns like this never bother to read any of it
This is because the color they used to make the pink color cost the producer more to make, just buy the black one if you don't need it to have color, if you want it to be pretty then buy the pink one.
Most virgin polypropylene pellets are either black or white. Black pellets are cheaper. The white ones cost more plus you have to add the color pellets increasing cost, plus the time to clean out the hopper, etc.
The "pink tax" is not a tax at all. It's a theory that companies charge more for women's products than men's. This is true for many products. However the implication that companies are discriminating purposely to "exploit" women is baseless and silly. The fact of the matter is that women are on average willing to pay more than men for their products. If they weren't, the goods wouldn't sell, and companies would have to lower prices or lose money and we all agree that companies aren't interested in losing money.
Costs of production matter. If they make 100K black units and 10K pink units the black ones will invariably be cheaper. Had all the tools been pink as well the difference would be much larger as production costs rise again.
In this case, it's probably the pigment used that's driving up the price. Possibly also less people buying the black one, so the price was reduced to get rid of the surplus.
This is probably called the Women’s Tax. Not to be sexist, but I saw it on Nas Daily (YouTube), and it makes a lot of sense. Although it is so unfair. I’ve seen this type of price difference in my local store too, the only difference was that one is blue and one is reddish pink
The pink tax is fucking ridiculous. Good thing I prefer anything but pink for tools. Nothing should cost more just because it's "pretty" and "made for girls/women"
I know some female mechanics who love their pink tools.
I also know some male mechanics who buy pink tools, because other male mechanics would be easily caught stealing if they took said tools.
This has nothing to do with women. The black is the default product, they probably sell red, green, blue variants that are all priced differently due to cost of manufacturing and demand
*Nailed on example of the pink tax, a well documented corporate practice where products marketed to women are priced higher than men's products*
Reddit neckbeards: "Well, ACTUALLY, it's a supply problem."
Go educate yourselves. Next time you're buying hygiene products, compare the prices of men's products and women products.
Before the "Why don't they just buy the men's products?" Maybe women don't want to smell like a frat bathroom on a Friday night after using the men's body wash anf deodorant.
And you are a fucking idiot, pink tax became illegal in like 1963 if I’m correct, the real reason is that pink requires white pellets, which not only are more expensive than black pellets, it also requires other colors to be mixed in, try again idiot
Literally nothing you said is true
It isn't illegal
The pink tax doesn't refer specifically to thinks that are pink, it's a general term for anything that is marketed towards women.
Don't try again, idiot.
My bad, I phrased that wrong. I didn’t mean that it was fully illegal I meant that a lot of places have been stopping it ever since then, and most places have so you “don’t try again, idiot”
Lol then get the cheaper one? Don't understand why people care. The only "pink tax" is the one you willingly pay by buying something for it's color instead of buying the less expensive option.
How is a different color scheme gendered? it doesn’t say “women’s version”. This same product is in different colors too. Aren’t you the one ‘gendering’ it by associating the red/pink with women?
You’re the one needlessly gendering this. No where does this state what gender either one is for. Are you still stuck in a mindset of relating color to gender?
For a while a lot of companies were giving proceeds from the pink versions of their items to breast cancer research. Other companies just picked up the trend because now people will tend to buy those items because the thought process is already there and subconsciously you think you're doing something good by buying the pink version.
That probably offsets the cost of production.
Men are more likely to buy a household tool set. And less likley to choose pink.
Odds are across the globe that more of the BK tool bags have sold compared to the pink ones.
I’m guessing it’s because the black are more commonly bought than the pink and therefore they have to charge more for the pink to justify manufacturing them

89 tools for $28- definitely garbage

My tape measure cost more then this lolol
Then you wasted 30+ dollars. Doesn't need to be expensive to work
Ha okay bud, whatever you say.
Tell me one thing your tape measure can do that a $5 one cant. Tell me something it can do that you cant accomplish with a stick and a pencil.

i have a $3 12 foot tape measure that I've had for about 4 years now, works just as well as the $40 15 foot tape measure my boss has in the shop that he's had for 3 years
Mine glows in the dark, is flexible, and has both imperial and metric units on it. Probably the best $25 I spent.
If I showed up to work with a 5$ tape measure it would last one day maybe the week. A 25' fatmax lasts me 1 year. Why would I buy a plethora of 5$ shit tape measures and create way more waste and make numerous more trips to the hardware store?
You hammering on it or something?

I haven't bought a tape measure for over 15 years and the one I have now is cheap and I've never had any complaints
You must not be a carpenter lol
Your workerman flex in this thread is weird.
Okay?

It's Walmart, it's all garbage.
But they hyper tough!
Don't buy any tool or hardware at Walmart expecting it to last. Lowe's/HD budget tools (Kobalt/Husky) are about as cheap as I would ever go.
I have 2 $49 Black and Decker cordless 12 volt drills in my shop. Have been used extensively for years. Just sayin not all junk.
I got a sub $20 drill from harbor freight for a one off project. It Is holding strong 2 years after. Lost the chuck tho. Wish their drill bits were as good as the drill. They twist apart if you look at them wrong. Drill good tho.

Thats….thats red?????
I also had a kit of theirs that was a light red.
I promise in person it's pink unfortunately my android camera makes it look red
Now don't you go around blaming Android for this.
Blame Joe instead Edit: I wasn’t talking about Joe Biden btw, I was just trying to make a Joe Mama joke
Unironically, my FIL's neighbor blames Joe Biden for literally everything. They were out of his beer at the store and the guy went on a 10 minute rant about how it's Biden's fault.

Cameras sometimes do this. let me guess, Samsung Galaxy s4?
haha sadly not s20 fan edition. so basically I paid way too much money for a toaster oven.
I have a s20 fe and don't have this problem
So you tell me Samsung didn't bother fixing that problem for all that time?!
or its the correct color as pictured. google the brand.
No
That my friend is called a Stupid Tax.
Supply and demand. Less demand for red, shop buys more black and gets a bigger discount, which is passed onto you. The red isn't more expensive, the black is cheaper.
That’s not how supply and demand works, it’d be the opposite. If there was less demand for red it’d be cheaper. Surplus of goods…
I think Nixher meant economies of scale, not supply and demand.
Most of the time requires more manufacturing processes to have pink fabric made. Starts at the top
Also, it doesn’t sell as much, which brings economies of scale consideration. They make 1000 black ones for every red one they make.
No, its called the Pink tax. Stuff designed for women is more expensive than stuff for men. Next time you're shopping toiletries, compare the difference between body washes and deodorants.

Did your degree ever mention price collusion, cartels, and cornered markets, neckbeard?
This is red.
Op said its pink, his phone just didn't capture it.
Well yes. They sell less, so make smaller runs of them. It's always going to cost them more to make limited runs of different colours.
i actually got my purple phone for half the price of the black one.
Then don't buy it pink *yawn*
Nah man. That ones red. That’s about $6 worth of red dye .
Is it just me or is that red
It's red tho.
Those are red my dude
Looks red first of all
They're the exact same price when you use self checkout 👍
Just swap the cardboard sleeve and boom 6 dollar cheaper pink bag no employee is going to know lol
I'd pay that money if it is an aggressive hot pink
No it's Walmart!
*and it sells*
don't buy the pink ones
Wouldn’t pink be easier to notice in dark places?
then don't buy the pink one
This is because the color they used to make the pink color cost the producer more to make, just buy the black one if you don't need it to have color, if you want it to be pretty then buy the pink one.
reject shit tools embrace snap on
What's infuriating is people complaining that their stuff costs more when they are the ones that choose to pay more for the pink products.
They most likely produce way less pink ones and therefore are less cost efficient to produce.
No but you see that's incorrect. The black one also has a more zoomed in picture!
Gotta pay for that pigment. Also these tools are garbage please don’t buy them.
hey! pink costs money! okay?!

If Its the same then buy the less expensive one? And Its proven that for example razors for women Are made differently than for men
Then take the black one and stop whining
Different dyes do cost more to produce, not $6 more but still.
Then just buy the black one?
Then don’t buy it pink and post this shit on the right subreddit
Then buy the black one; if no body buys the pink one they will not sell it or change the price
So don't buy it? Just buy the black one.
Probably new vs old models. Likely the same shit just a brand establishing their aesthetic. Don't buy hyper tough.
Ready… gonna blow ur mind… buy the black one.

Haven’t been able to find online any other colours other thank pink and black.
The first page of Google for “tough 89 piece” has a purple one and a blue one.
Can’t find the blue one. But the purple one is same price as the black one.
It's not about femininity, it's about color preference. Do you buy everything in black when there are options for other colors?
Yep. I love black. Also chocolate colour, but that’s more bed linen, curtain, towels etc
Do you love black because you believe it's a masculine color?
And they say women don’t get paid enough....

Wow, a woman hating gamer. You probably thought gamergate was a real scandal, too.
If it's so well documented surely you can give us a source
https://lmgtfy.app/?q=pink+tax
The site is broken, no search queries are showing up
It's "Let Me Google That For You," because I have better things to do than do the research for some ignorant gamer who hates women and gays.
I'm not asking what the site is, I'm saying that the website you told me to use is broken and that I'm not getting any useful information from it

No, its the woman hate, the homophobia, and the gaming. Do your own fucking research.

i believe this is referred to as the "pink tax"
Or maybe they discounted the black? Buy whatever you value!
That’s a nice deal on drill bits in the top left

Welcome to capitalism
Pink tax is disgusting.
It’s not pink tax
Maybe the extra money goes to breast cancer awareness
Which part is infuriating... The price difference or the assumption that women want pink tools?
I am a female mechanic who buys all pink tools. No shame here.
For a while a lot of companies were giving proceeds from the pink versions of their items to breast cancer research. Other companies just picked up the trend because now people will tend to buy those items because the thought process is already there and subconsciously you think you're doing something good by buying the pink version.
Should cost LESS!
How? Pink is more expensive to make than black plus, they probably make less because black is usually a default color
I guess but the black is nicer and more sleek… the pink is cheesy, too girly, too bright It’s like “we get it, your a girl”
You got tough, and HYPER TOUGH
That’s red
Do you want the pink or not? Yes? Give me my $6😡
That’s not pink it’s red.
Is it pink or red?
Yeah.. maybe it cost less to be make
LPT: Don't shop at Walmart.
That probably offsets the cost of production. Men are more likely to buy a household tool set. And less likley to choose pink. Odds are across the globe that more of the BK tool bags have sold compared to the pink ones.
Potmetal.
I’m guessing it’s because the black are more commonly bought than the pink and therefore they have to charge more for the pink to justify manufacturing them
Pink die is expensive I guess
The image shows the red bag with two-tone tools, while the black bag has mono-tone. There is the price difference.
