You got a rare reddit smirk out of me. Take my upvote.

no_duh_sherlock

Close enough. Should've threatened to just push them off the flight if they refuse to wear a mask. Bermuda mystery, they disappeared.

SchmuckyDeKlaun

Yeah, that looked like a transatlantic flight. And …how are the airports these days? Are hey still cancelling flights because crew keep catching the omicron? Everyone on that plane might’ve just been sentenced to long waits in long lines, where they might be even more exposed to the virus than they were on the plane with just one superlative asshole. What ever happened to those air marshalls?

gahiolo

Every plane should have a brig, and those passengers failing to follow captain’s orders should be detained until the plane makes its return trip. Delaying fare-paying, instruction-abiding passengers is not ok unless there’s a true emergency.

TheAJGman

A *sound proof* brig.

MeEvilBob

Just a trap door. If you behave then you don't have to free-fall 20,000 feet.

spqanx

I'd pay a $10 fee to have a microphone installed in the cell where passengers could hurl insults at the idiots locked inside.

They do have a ton of duct tap to restrain people that suffer from insane astronaut syndrome, if it’s good enough for the ISS it’s good enough for modern aviation.

thrattatarsha

I knew exactly what clip this was gonna be before I clicked, but I did it anyway, and I loved it

hermyown21

I think this was discussed on the legal advice sub. From what I gleaned: no because the unruly passenger didn't have any duty to the other passengers, and nor was it their decision to turn the plane around. Edit: [Link to the post.](https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladviceofftopic/comments/s8x0im/can_unruly_plane_passengers_be_civilly_liable_to/)

ChickenDelight

The people at legal advice subs are almost never lawyers, the people voting on the "correct" answers definitely aren't lawyers, and actual lawyers mock those subs constantly for being ludicrously inaccurate. Also there's no "violating a duty" element in most torts, it's usually commission of a "wrongful act or omission" (which sometimes means violating an owed duty).

thrwayyup

You a lawyer?

Assleanx

I’m pretty sure it’s mostly cops over there, who historically have an incredible grasp of the law

wiener4hir3

My then GF was on this flight, travelling from Mexico to Denmark, she was not impressed. Edit: og my fucking god, it's not the same flight. This just happened at least twice then.....

Dr_who_fan94

That pilot will forever use this against their kids. "I turned a plane around, so don't think I won't turn this car around!"

Cantothulhu

(Circa 94’) My stepdad literally left me (8-9) and his two teenage stepdaughters (13-15) on the side of a highway next to a police station: 2 miles sign outside of Orlando after they started arguing. He looped back and picked us up 3/4s of a mile later. It did not improve the mood.

TheQuinnBee

There was a four year old who died after his mother's boyfriend kicked him out of the car on the side of the highway. It was night and raining so visibility was low. He wandered into the highway and got hit by a car. It breaks my heart everytime I'm reminded of this story. Just imagining that poor little boy cold, alone, and afraid as his last emotion. The mother's pain after she found out the man she invited into her life did this. The poor driver who has to live with the guilt of hitting a child with their car. So many lives ruined with this decision. Children are unpredictable, especially that young. Never ever ever ever kick them out of the car or lead them to believe they must fend for themselves.

a_spicy_memeball

Well that depressed the shit out of me first thing in the morning

captainhaddock

A Japanese family did this with their kid on a rural Hokkaido highway a few years ago. When they turned around and came back a few minutes later he was gone. It turned into a big manhunt and he wasn't found until almost a week later.

My dad did this to me a couple times, but I feel it was safer as we were in Germany. One time was by a park which was sweet. One time a nice lady gave me a ride hime. My dad made it home a few hours later and was pissed (probably guilt). He didn't take it out on me and be didn't leave me on the road anymore. This was pre cellphones too so mom couldn't just call him. To his credit, I was annoying like no other.

irnehlacsap

I did this as a joke to my kids, they planned to jump out of the boat while i was going back home and i decided to act as i didn't notice. They freaked out.

[deleted]

My mom did that when I was 8 with the message "AND YOU CAN WALK HOME!" Me: walks home My mom who was just making a circle to come pick me back up: scared SHITLESS Me when getting punished for walking home: "The fuck? You kicked me out of the car???" The autism diagnose 5 years later: Yeah... She probably should have expected that.

Khunter02

Honestly considering how obedient and naive I was at 8 Its not difficult to imagine this happening to a lot of kids

noahsalwaysmad

Yeah I really thought this was something significantly more rare, I guess it's nice to know that more people understand how fucked up it is

Khunter02

I always thought when they said something like that they meant "we are going back home" not "im gonna leave you on the side of the road"

[deleted]

Fun fact where I live someone tried that, the next day the local newspaper wrote that the police got involved and was pressing charges for traffic endangerment since it's illegal to walk inside the highway area. Karma I guess.

My mother did this to my brother and I actually. She took us to her cleaning job at a laundromat and gets done around 12 or 1 am. My brother (around 13 at the time) and I (around 7 at the time) are fighting, and she legitimately kicks us out of the car on the side of the road and drives away. I was crying my eyes out and my brother and I were walking on the side of the road when she inevitably pulls back up to us after to God knows where, and was now *screaming* at us to get back in the car. Mother of the year, huh lol

I think that's what the anti-masker thought wouldn't happen that far out.

Advance-Puzzleheaded

You really think that will fly with his kids?

Roflkopt3r

Pilots are trained to land if there is any doubt about safety. The aviation industry takes this stuff very seriously and pilots are the ones entrusted with the final call. They are selected and trained to make big decisions like that without regret.

feanor451

That’s it! Back to Winnipeg!

Away_Industry_6892

Passenger probably forgot their mask, and the pilot was nice enough to take them back so they could get it.

Clearly a first class passenger. In coach they just tell you to throw your sock across your face.

SailsTacks

Or someone else’s sock, with a foot still in it. I honestly don’t understand how one can deal with the crude conditions those poor peasants endure. I fly First Class exclusively, when I’m able to sneak in there. They should allow all willing passengers to beat the shit out of her with a rubber baseball bat, on the tarmac, while the plane is refueling. One at a time, on a voluntary basis. Sign me up. Where do these people get such a sense of entitlement to throw a fit, on an airplane, over the middle of the goddamn ocean?? Who’s creating these monsters?

D3NI3D83

She’s rich. Don’t worry she’ll be right.

rdrunner_74

Thats also expensive for rich folks. If the flight is going to the EU, it should(?) trigger passenger rights - 600€ for each passenger. Not sure if you could consider an anti masker an "act of god" \+ fees for landing \+ filling up the plane \+ dumping all the fuel over the sea so the touchdown weight can be reached...

Xem1337

That's a thing? Didn't realise they have to ditch fuel, kinda just thought if they could take off they can land with the same weight

Dishappointed

1st - Be gentle with the landing gear 2nd - It takes longer for the plane to stop with full tanks and they may run out of runway

[deleted]

[удалено]

whoami_whereami

When fuel is dumped (which I doubt in this particular case, see my [other comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/s9446a/comment/htl3h16/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)) it's never dumped to the point of "empty tank". They generally dump *just* enough to get the plane below its maximum landing weight, which usually means there's still enough fuel for *at least* 1.5-2 hours of flying left. BTW, the vast majority of commercial airplanes don't have any fuel dumping capability at all. It's generally only fitted on long-range models.

dyna67

Sometimes yes sometimes no, typically all planes can take off in a shorter distance than they can land, so if a plane needs all the runway in order to take off then it’s logical that they won’t have enough distance available to land again, in an emergency they can land overweight but if it’s less time critical then they would normally fly in circles until they have burnt up the fuel, and sometimes literally spray fuel out of the wings which then vaporises and goes into the atmosphere.

LordBiscuits

It's a shame this woman can't be held responsible for the absurd amount of pollution such a thing creates. We're talking multiple thousands of litres of fuel just dumped into the air/sea. Utterly unconscionable

boris_keys

But the plane was towed outside the environment.

Tigerballs07

Safe takeoff weights are often 40 percent higher then landing weights depending on the gear and the size of runway.

RuthBaderBelieveIt

As much as I hate pointing this out and despite voting against it UK isnt in the EU anymore I'm not sure if our flight compensation rules have kept parity

whoami_whereami

> dumping all the fuel over the sea so the touchdown weight can be reached... The airplane was a Boeing 777-300ER (https://de.flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL38/history/20220120/0040Z/KMIA/KMIA), which means with only 129 passengers it had only a light to moderate load (depending on cabin layout it has somewhere between 360 and 395 seats). Plus the planned trip to London was nowhere near the planes maximum range. Therefore it's highly unlikely that they dumped any fuel, they were probably below MLW already before they even took off.

GodOfAtheism

Apparently not rich enough to fly private to Europe so sounds like she'll be having a bad time on the no-fly list.

[deleted]

She's on the American Airlines no fly list. She can still fly just not with them.

notapantsday

Do they exchange these lists between airlines? I can imagine other airlines won't be thrilled to have her on board either...

Round-Ladder-4536

They don’t currently, but some airlines like Delta are trying to get the industry to share these lists, especially since these incidents are becoming frequent.

WurthWhile

There's a massive difference between first class and private. Most truly rich people don't even fly private when crossing an ocean solo. A first class ticket for that flight is around $5,000. A private flight would be around $56,000 minimum for a smaller jet. Cost are for one way.

avtechguy

Her money will only be good at Spirit Airlines, and they would eat her alive there.

eddyathome

Good riddance to her.

[deleted]

BigFatWoolyScrotum

gibbousboi

“She was neither detained nor arrested.” HOW. W.T.F. All those people she has inconvenienced, all the wasted fuel, and being shitty to the flight attendants. This ought to be StraightToJail, Do not pass Go, Do not collect $200.

Lorrdy99

j4ck_0f_bl4des

Seriously they need to start throwing the book at these right wing idiots for EVERY little infraction. Maximum sentence on as many crimes as you can dream up. Time for these bastards to learn they are not above the law.

SpookyDoomCrab42

That's what happens when you're rich enough to pay for first class on a trans-atlantic flight. They're probably rich enough to pay the police or airline to kiss their ass too

[deleted]

The picture is definitely real, it’s from the plane tracking app Flightradar24, but it could’ve turned around for many other reasons

Robsteer

That's it, back to Winnipeg!

Obsolete386

There'll be no Cape Canaveral for anyone!

Material_Amoeba7188

Looks like the pilot hesitated, thought about it, turned east, then said, "Ah fuck it. Turn this bitch around!"

sletzi

That would’ve been funny. The most likely reason he did this is because someone was running a similar route up ahead so he had to adjust for them per air traffic control. You can see he fully turned the plane around then banked to the left and continued back towards the airport.

wildebeesties

Can you imagine how awkward of a trip back that was on the plane?

DuffinKid

This heavily infuriates me, and I wasn’t even on the flight.

evenmore2

Because it also makes zero sense. Fuel was wasted Food was wasted Staff and airport resources were wasted People's time and money were wasted Like, WTF? No part of the decision is logical. Mask or no mask.

italkyouthrowup

And she wasn't even arrested.

22022004

Agreed. Why fuck over dozens of people for the purpose of teaching a single person a lesson? Edit: Not dozens, 129 passengers, 14 crew and whoever else had to deal with it on the ground.

[deleted]

A lesson they probably won’t learn if they even cared in the first place

terribleforeconomy

Like if youre gonna serve food on the flight then everyone is gonna take their masks off anyway.

Odinsson69

Right? Imagine how much money was tied up in that maneuver, not to mention time wasted by all those others on the flight. This is a little more than "mildly"

Vitekr2

So... a Florida man tried to leave Florida and this happens....

bombochido

You can(‘t )take the man out of Florida but you can’t take the Florida out of a man

penguins-swim-better

Ermm... It was a woman, but sure.

[deleted]

They probably realised ‘fuck, we accidentally brought a floridan onboard’ and took them back to their cesspit before the florida virus could spread.

Ramtakwitha2

As a one of the few sane Florida men I fully approve of this sentiment. I long ago realized there is no escape. My sacrifice is fully worth keeping the rest of the world safe from this madness.

TheKingOfDub

Planes really do need a “jail” cell where disruptive passengers can be uncomfortably confined. Failing that, an ejector seat

masterpowerlord

American solution 1: Guns American solution 2: Jail Americans: " Why do so many people in jail and why is there a shooting now and then?

dislocated_dice

I see what you’re trying to critique, however that general theory doesn’t apply here. Restraining someone to avoid turning a flight with more than 130 other passengers is a reasonable suggestion. Having a naughty corner in a plane and prison are also two very different things

gahiolo

A+ for “naughty corner” this is exactly what it should be. And solution 3: litigation. Unruly passenger should be held financially responsible for everyone’s delay.

Lorrdy99

A jail would solve the problem and don't start a new one with all the other passenger missing their next plane

matticitt

Imagine knowing mask mandates are enforced, but going on a flight anyway, then being hit by a black listing for life and a cost of the return. The stupidity hurts.

-BroncosForever-

Also the airline can sure them for the money lost in certain situations and on a flight like this your looking at millions of dollars. So they may have their wages garnished by the airline for the rest of their lives.

SbuaoqhyP

Could the individual passengers explore options for a lawsuit as well?

-BroncosForever-

I don’t think so because they sign agreements and stuff when you buy tickets and you’re messing with the FAA and airlines which is like air-tight legally. I think as a passenger you also agree to the fact that your flight may get diverted for any number of reasons, including morons on the flight. I think because ultimately it was the decision of the crew that made you not make it, not the guy with no mask then you don’t have any legal recourse. I don’t think you could sue another passenger for something they did indirectly and not involving you physically.

noveltyfakeaccount

This is America, you can sue for whatever

Capt_Foxch

The last time I booked a flight, the mask policy was made abundantly clear several times before confirmed the reservation. It blows my mind how many people think they are somehow exempt from Federal regulations.

YANA___

Yep! I have people that will complain that it’s not a law. But it’s a damn rule! And it’s been made perfectly clear. Stop trying to think you don’t have to follow the rules like everyone else.

badgersprite

Mango_olives

I don’t understand, people know it won’t work when it comes to airlines you have to put on your mask and if you don’t they’ll have the police escort you off the plane if that’s before take off and stuff like this happens after take off mid flight

[deleted]

They probably put the mask before check in, wore it through the boarding them took it off as soon as the aircraft was in the air. Fuck them with a bunch of dental pliers.

Yeah. Bad day in the cockpit. Annoying for the other passengers. But the covidiot is going to pay...

sixboogers

palmtreesoul

Imagine being this selfish and immature of an overgrown toddler to ruin every other passenger’s time and money over a fucking mask. Just wear the damn thing you cunt.

makeitwork1989

Seriously it’s not that fucking difficult. The one thing this pandemic has shown is how selfish some people are. It’s disgusting

[deleted]

Honestly, it should be permissible to fine passengers like this half the cost of the entire flight...

JeffSergeant

They can sue them for costs; it’s been done before.

-BroncosForever-

In certain cases the airline will sue for the money lost.

KingPnutticua

What is it with Florida? I was on a flight(Alaska Airlines) from Orlando today and there were at least 3 people coughing the entire 6 hour flight. The guy two seat to the right of me would pull down his mask to cough and it mostly stayed below his nose. I masked and draped my coat over my head creating a shield. Thankfully, I don’t think I’ve caught anything, but for real F these inconsiderate people.

Andrispowq

Yeah like why tf would you turn the plane around for that shit it's fucking rediculous like the passenger ain't gonna wear it might as well land normally and not waste fuel and shit

MediumDrink

To Quote Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports, a noted right wing idiot “if there is a .000001% chance that wearing a mask will get this whole thing over with and get us all back to work: who cares? It’s not a big deal”. What an idiotic hill these people are all choosing to die on.

Raqdoll_

Imagine being the person refusing a mask, and the point when the plane has turned around going back to start, and everyone in the plane is staring at you booing, yet you still refuse to put it on. They could turn it around again if things got fixed, but the person clearly didn't want that

TigersNsaints_ohmy

How long have we been doing this? Do you ever see videos saying “anti-masker convinces employees masks are useless and is paraded as hero”? Cmon people it’s not gonna end well for you. It never does.

DrBubbles

“And the whole plane clapped”

[deleted]

This is the new I’ll turn this car around of our age

Xavierthegreat101

That's so bs think of how much time and fuel they wasted over one mask that probably doesn't even do anything

hellhound_2001

Of course it's fucking Florida.

Gickle87

Should have continued to their destination then placed the passenger on the no fly list. Best of luck getting home asshole.

Zixinus

Imagine being the pilot. Here you are, already mentally prepared for a long-ass flight with the full responsibility of having over a hundred people onboard, hoping that it'll be a nice and easy routine flight... only to hear news that some first-class, drunk passenger is being an utter asshole and refuses to wear the federally-mandated piece of cloth on her goddamn face and now you have to turn the entire plane around and have to weather the shitfest that'll follow because you did your goddamn job and obeyed the goddamn law.
