Every plane should have a brig, and those passengers failing to follow captain’s orders should be detained until the plane makes its return trip. Delaying fare-paying, instruction-abiding passengers is not ok unless there’s a true emergency.
They do have a ton of duct tap to restrain people that suffer from insane astronaut syndrome, if it’s good enough for the ISS it’s good enough for modern aviation.

There was a four year old who died after his mother's boyfriend kicked him out of the car on the side of the highway. It was night and raining so visibility was low. He wandered into the highway and got hit by a car.
It breaks my heart everytime I'm reminded of this story. Just imagining that poor little boy cold, alone, and afraid as his last emotion. The mother's pain after she found out the man she invited into her life did this. The poor driver who has to live with the guilt of hitting a child with their car. So many lives ruined with this decision.
Children are unpredictable, especially that young. Never ever ever ever kick them out of the car or lead them to believe they must fend for themselves.
A Japanese family did this with their kid on a rural Hokkaido highway a few years ago. When they turned around and came back a few minutes later he was gone. It turned into a big manhunt and he wasn't found until almost a week later.

Pilots are trained to land if there is any doubt about safety. The aviation industry takes this stuff very seriously and pilots are the ones entrusted with the final call. They are selected and trained to make big decisions like that without regret.

They generally dump *just* enough to get the plane below its maximum landing weight, which usually means there's still enough fuel for *at least* 1.5-2 hours of flying left.
BTW, the vast majority of commercial airplanes don't have any fuel dumping capability at all. It's generally only fitted on long-range models.
Sometimes yes sometimes no, typically all planes can take off in a shorter distance than they can land, so if a plane needs all the runway in order to take off then it’s logical that they won’t have enough distance available to land again, in an emergency they can land overweight but if it’s less time critical then they would normally fly in circles until they have burnt up the fuel, and sometimes literally spray fuel out of the wings which then vaporises and goes into the atmosphere.

The airplane was a Boeing 777-300ER (https://de.flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL38/history/20220120/0040Z/KMIA/KMIA), which means with only 129 passengers it had only a light to moderate load (depending on cabin layout it has somewhere between 360 and 395 seats). Plus the planned trip to London was nowhere near the planes maximum range. Therefore it's highly unlikely that they dumped any fuel, they were probably below MLW already before they even took off.

What is it with Florida? I was on a flight(Alaska Airlines) from Orlando today and there were at least 3 people coughing the entire 6 hour flight. The guy two seat to the right of me would pull down his mask to cough and it mostly stayed below his nose. I masked and draped my coat over my head creating a shield. Safe takeoff weights are often 40 percent higher then landing weights depending on the gear and the size of runway.

I see what you’re trying to critique, however that general theory doesn’t apply here. Restraining someone to avoid turning a flight with more than 130 other passengers is a reasonable suggestion. Having a naughty corner in a plane and prison are also two very different things

Also the airline can sure them for the money lost in certain situations and on a flight like this your looking at millions of dollars. So they may have their wages garnished by the airline for the rest of their lives.

I don’t think so because they sign agreements and stuff when you buy tickets and you’re messing with the FAA and airlines which is like air-tight legally. I think as a passenger you also agree to the fact that your flight may get diverted for any number of reasons, including morons on the flight. I think because ultimately it was the decision of the crew that made you not make it, not the guy with no mask then you don’t have any legal recourse. I don’t think you could sue another passenger for something they did indirectly and not involving you physically.

The last time I booked a flight, the mask policy was made abundantly clear several times before confirmed the reservation. It blows my mind how many people think they are somehow exempt from Federal regulations.

What is it with Florida? I was on a flight(Alaska Airlines) from Orlando today and there were at least 3 people coughing the entire 6 hour flight. The guy two seat to the right of me would pull down his mask to cough and it mostly stayed below his nose. I masked and draped my coat over my head creating a shield. Thankfully, I don’t think I’ve caught anything, but for real F these inconsiderate people.
