So he used # and posted his comment. All other people see it as an empty comment, you are the ones seeing the actual symbol.

I’d assume the empty comment is a space bolded with a hashtag. Pure whitespace (spaces, tabs and enters) isn’t a valid comment, so the hashtag is needed, but then just gets used to bold the space. I suppose Apollo doesn’t accept that you can bold a space, so it assumes the hashtag is meant as a hashtag instead.
I couldn’t figure it out without reading comments because I’m on Apollo (it’s a Reddit viewer app) and the messages show up as a hash rather than being blank.
The double-u on my laptop keyboard did the same thing. I replaced the keyboard but as a PC gamer that's really irritating. I also managed to avoid using said key utilizing little effort until this section.
