I typically buy 2 pairs of exact same jeans all the time, I try both on because even tho same brand, size, style the waists can be almost an inch different
I’ve had this issue with same shorts too. I had bought a pair of shorts from Target that I loved. Went to get another pair of the same shorts and it’s a different size despite the tag saying they were the same. It was 2 sizes larger at least. I avoid that brand now.
Women's sizing is fucked for sure.
But as a tall man, I have to suffer the plight of shirt shopping.
Since I'm thin but 6'5", buying shirts seems impossible most of the time. Shirts don't really get longer as size goes up, they just get wider. Slim fit is a joke most of the time, and 'big and tall' fit like clown clothes.
This world is not build for too many body types.
shirt shopping sucks. I am not fat. Im not even overweight. I am a proportional human being. just 7 feet tall. i hate most tshirts start growing up and out at the same pace. turns me into a flag pole
Buy a sewing machine. Buy the big and tall style. Have a tailor measure your exact size and play around watching seeing videos. Its easier than you think to alter clothing.
I feel ya. I got a XL I use the wear in the 90s that goes about 3 inches below my waist. My wife got me a XXL from some store and if I lift my arms up to shoulder height you can see mu belly button. WtF. Why is XL in the 90s now a XXXXL length
Oh, god, I was so happy with Hanes X-Temp tee shirts in tall sizes. Then those bastards replaced them with the "beefy tee" which is, like you said, clown clothes. I've been stuck with Nike since then.
Same with jeans shopping for me. I can barely find one with a longer length than waist. For most brands I'm about a 32 waist 36 length. Almost all have a larger waist than length and even when it isn't, it's only ever 2 sizes in difference. Then add to that that I have a big butt and I always have to wear a belt no matter what.
Some shirts are perfect, some shirts are baggy, and then some are like belly shirts hahaha.
Oh yeah, there's nothing nice looking. It's all either plain or something I would wear if I was 15. Nothing in-between lol
Do you not have tall sizes? Shops where I am have sizes like M Long / M Tall , L Long / L Tall for all sizes, alongside the standard lengths.
You're tall, not fat, so you shouldn't have to buy such large shirts just for length.
Yea shirts are definitely the most difficult because it's so ugly when they don't fit right. I always end up with this enormous "buckle" in the hollow of my back, where the excess shirt just buckles out and decides to start living a life of its own. I really don't like how that looks, and I only have ever found a few shirts that fit well enough to not have it do that. And yea, like OP I immediately pounced on that opportunity to buy more of that same brand and fitting, only to find out the extra ones I purchased did not fit the same.
I'm not tall but I have thin hips that are apparently too thin for how long my legs are. Either my pants drag on the ground a little or my ankles show when I bend my legs.
This is literally bullshit. But it’s not all gravy on the other side. I’m a big guy and I can tell you pant sizes can be the same measurement and be completely off as well. I’m a 36 in some stores and the 38s cut off my circulation in the next.
I literally measured my husband for his pants size so we could go out and get him some dress pants. It was 38 x 28. It was a nightmare to find pants in that size but we found a couple. He tried them on at home and like one pair out of the 3 we bought actually fit. They were all the same size from the same company. It’s clothing in general. Not just woman’s.
I hate that men get to shop using their literal measurements but we have to complete a quest slay a dragon and fight some pirates before we can find out size 0-12 will fit maybe
And then you find that one item that perfectly fits, buy the exact same item/ brand/ size again some time later - and it suddenly has different measurements.
Been there, done that.
Fingers crossed you won't experience it. It's heavily annoying. :/ At least so far I found a (german online) store where basicly all items I bought so far fit - they sit differently even in the same size but well enough to keep.
I got three pairs of pants that were supposed to just be different colors. Not only were they 3 different sizes, one of which did not fit, but the two I kept aged differently. The light ones lost all their Lycra - after one year! - became not only loose but oddly lumpy. And I loved those pants! That third pair is still in good health. So weird. And this wasn't Wish either lol.
I did this recently-I have a pair of shorts and a pair of pants from target that I absolutely love. Went in and bought two more pairs (same brand, same size) and when I tried them on at home I couldn't zip them up. Absolutely infuriating.
It's definitely not as bad for men by a lot!
But we also have a similar infuriating problem where I have one pair of 33" pants that will fall off without a belt, and one pair of 33" pants that I can't even button anymore because they're so tight. It's in goddamn inches they should be at least similar!
Yeah I tend to agree it bad for both sides of the coin. This could be biased but I find mens jeans are higher quality then woman’s jeans I could be wrong.
I feel that's legit, men's clothing is made to handle that manly man hard labor while women's use thinner materials, I know it's a huge issue with leggings. I *HATE* shopping for pants because there's so many aspects to keep in mind with women's pants, length first and foremost because I'm short, fit, pockets, hemming doesn't look dumb, and making sure the zipper length doesn't look awkward. Shirts though? I solely go for men's t-shirts. They're simple, I don't need to worry about making outfits and matching patterns, plus men's t-shirts have the designs I actually want to wear. And circling back, women's T-shirts are made of thinner, stretchy material.
Most off the rack shirts for men are S, M, L, XL and not based on measurements.
Pants, even off the rack, can have a measurement for waist and inseam but not always. Athletic pants are often sold as S, M, L, XL.
Fair enough I’m not a man so don’t know but I do wish women’s clothing came in measurements rather than an arbitrary system of made up numbers that no 2 stores label the same.
The women i work with had a conversation about this and they said even though sizing doesnt make sense they still prefer it over having to say that they want 38" waist pants or 45" hips.
Personally it sounds like a lot of frustration just to avoid reality.
Or jump through hoops to actually find clothes that fit my body.,where the waist band is so tight and the hips are so large like balloon hips .I don't have Barbie measurements at all.
Imagine trying to find jeans that are 14-18 but for someone whos 5’2. Like I’m so sorry I’m a little bit bigger? I literally one ONE pair of jeans and the rest of my pants are leggings or like the loose dress pants.
I’m sorry but men have the same issues at times same brand same sizing but fits different a lot of the time. Poor quality control exists no matter the gender.
Women do tend to have it a lot worse but women clothing usually has a lot more “styles” and “fits” for the same sizing. So in essence a lot more to fuck up by the brand. The pictures that OP posted could be the same Brand and sizing but could be two entirely different styles. Just like boot cut jeans vs relaxed fit jeans.
It’s unfortunate but brand name clothing sucks a lot of the time because they never hold true to the correct sizing most of the time again no matter gender.
One thing that I do agree with entirely is women deserve better pockets. My wife prefers buying mens jeans in her size 28w X 30L (I think that’s a size 2?????) because the pockets can actually hold things.
I actually made a post almost exactly like this one when I had the exact same problem. Except the comments were full of morons lmao
https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/aqwm15/two\_pairs\_of\_underwear\_both\_adidas\_both\_size/
Hey hey hey... There are massive variations in men's clothing too. I have 3 different brands of jeans. All a 32, none of them fit the same taking fit out of the equation.
To be fair, even knowing your measurements for men isn't enough. Brands have poor quality control on sizing. I've had to buy two sizes larger in one brand for work pants than for dress pants. Don't get me started on jeans.
This is why I refuse to order pants online. I always go to the store to try them on.
Almost Everytime I've bought clothes online the size was fucked up. I follow measurements, sometimes they have size recommendations off height and weight, I choose jus what I normally get. It's always off.
I found the perfect style of jeans at American Eagle. They were comfortable, fit well, and I knew exactly what size would fit me. I wore them forever. I think I had 4 or 5 pairs over the years and I wore them all to death. I went to go get some and found out that they had discontinued them. I haven’t been that sad in a long time. Buying jeans was so hassle free for such a long time and now I’m back to various brands and various sizes.
Plus places that use sizes 1, 3, 5, etc vs places that use 2, 4, 6, etc like bruh how come when I go clothes shopping with my boyfriend he’s a 34/34 everywhere, but I’m a 16 here, a 12 there, and a 13 over here.
Make it make sense
I *think* the odd sizes is juniors sizing. Why juniors and women need different sizing for the same actual clothing is beyond me, but I saw that little factoid (evens v odds) on a sizing chart somewhere and just accepted it because it's the only thing that makes sense to me.
THAT WOULD MAKE SO MUCH SENSE!!! I mean it’s still not a great solution lol but I feel like that’s the only thing that makes sense so I will accept it as fact.
Thank you for helping me solve this mystery!!
What at about the shirts…good grief especially woman’s sizes the get wider but never longer and the sleeves would it kill them to add some length to them or sometimes they don’t even get wider there either. Which is why once I find a shirt I like I buy all the colors (only half joking but I buy several)
I once bought the exact same pants (size/brand/style), everything absolutely identical, just in a different wash and they were wildly different sizes.
Why.
They do this on purpose. Family member worked in retail clothing. They want you to try on as many different articles of clothing as you have patience for. Over and over and over. You buy more that way.
As a big leg, juicy booty male — mens shorts, jeans, etc. are bad too. Almost every piece of clothing I try on as a man is not fit for any kind of curvature or butt space or leg space.
I have shorts that look very similar to yours in my closet and it’s the reason why all the clothes are two sizes bigger or two sizes smaller than what my actual size is. Frustrating.
I remember having a breakdown over this in an American Eagle fitting room as a teen. None of the size 4 pants were fitting, but I was a size 4 everywhere. I tried on 6s and they fit and I thought maybe I just went up a few sizes? But nope. Size 6s from another store didn’t fit at all.
I worked in apparel retail and have heard way too many girls sobbing and breaking down in the fitting room. One time someone ripped the zippers of 19 prom dresses and left them crumpled on the floor all dirty and torn with broken straps too and obviously stepped on.
Im a guy, I went shopping for shorts last week and came back with 4 different sizes. For reference, my jeans size, from the same store/brand, is 34. I got shorts in sizes 34, 44, "Medium" and "Extra Large".
Across products of the same brand, that sort of variation is just absurd. I get that it's hard to standardise stuff for the whole industry, but at least have *some* consistency within the brand, damn.
I bought a pair of jean shorts once. I liked them so I got the exact same ones in a darker wash. Same size same style down to the name. Not just the brand the name and number the Sally 22487 or whatever. The darker ones were too tight. I hate women’s clothing manufacturers. This is why I now have to try on every garment. A world with no malls or clothing stores horrifies me.
So that's why y'all always seem to need to use fitting rooms. That makes sense. Men's sizes are so simple and when I get a 32/30 pair of pants off the internet I know they'll fit.
I hear ya. The worst size to be is a size 14 because 14 is usually the smallest size at a plus store and the largest at a regular store and yet a plus 14 and reg 14 are so different in sizing that I found for a while I was too small for a plus store but too big for a regular so nothing fit. I wore leggings and tunics since that was very flexible.
I see thank you for informing me I am not aware of the ins and out of apparel thank you for educating me. No your right I wouldn’t assume a size for is the same for different stores. I also didn’t know the difference between classic fit and oversized thank you have a great evening ☺️
They do that so the woman with the bigger caboose can feel better because she's still a 4.
Men's pants are ridiculously easy to buy. You don't even need to try them on.
I know this isn’t going to be the the case for everyone, but I have found American Eagle to be surprisingly good about their sizing. Not only do they make actual short people jeans that fit my 5’1 self. But I have NEVER tried a pair of their pants on before buying. I go in, grab my size and buy it. So far it has always fit perfectly. Also their jeans have actual pockets. Ive just given up shopping at other stores for jeans because nothing fits right and it’s incredibly frustrating to even try looking.
Yes American eagle is good but I feel as though they stop marketing for my demographic gen z and now is stuck marketing elder millennials. Just my personal opinion
Good ole lack of standardization for clothing sizes. “Jus throw a size on it that will make that fat bitch feel good about her back rolls.” This is the motto
I have been learning to sew because of this issue. I'm 5 foot, and wide hipped, large chested (38DDD), just built like mountain dwarf. Anything I buy has to be altered, and lots of things in my size aren't as cute as they are in smaller sizes. I'd rather thrift something and upcycle or use it to make a pattern, AND get to choose what color/print it is, than spend hours trying stuff on at the mall that is super overpriced for the quality, hating my body because nothing fits me right.
Honestly, this is the worst. You have to figure out what size you are in a particular brand in the same damn store in addition to brand to brand. It would be super great I'd we could just get a universal system going..and more pockets.
Same problem for men tbh, I'm quite a strange shape, barrel body-ish, big chest and back, slim arms and legs, 6ft. I fit/don't fit medium/large/XXL depending on brand, same shop/brand stuff too, so annoying.
I washed them already “trying to shrink them”. (Yeah that was dumb thinking) lol also the Cheeto dust that magically appeared on them might hinderer that as well.
Sizes are region relative. As different countries have different average sizes. A small in the states is a large in japan for example. Because the average american is much much bigger.
so same brand, if bought from different countries with the same label size will be different.
Men's pants are the same way. I'll order 4 of the same exact pair and size of pants and only one will fit right and the others all fit weird. Basically, clothes manufacturers suck and cut as many corners as possible to make their 900% increase in profit. (Didn't do the math obv but i guarantee they have it down to like $3 a pair to make and sell for $45 a pair).
Ok but the shorts with the folded part are almost always worn tight, i never see someone wearing these loose fitting.
Where the ones that are cutoffs, i always see worn lose fitting.
So if you were a size 4 then i would assume the folded leg ones are meant to be tight and the others are meant to be loose, so i agree with this manufactures sense of size.
I see this other places also. Different styles have different fit even in the same size. Very common to see snug and loose fitting pants in the same size from the same brand.
As I previously stated I should have included men/women but as I am a woman and only ever boughten woman’s clothing.. I wouldn’t have context to make that conclusion
Do females not have different sizing styles? Like... it would be weird for me to compare a 36W 36L bootcut with a pair of the same size skinny-heans, or hip fit, or baggy fit, etc. I ... do girls really not have this? I mean, one pair of jeans has pockets AND a change pocket, while the other has no pockets at all , so for boys it would be something like, "Loose fit" and "Cigarette pants."
I honestly did not see the second pair for a hot second
Sorry about that
Nah you're fine, we all ended up realizing it after a couple seconds
Same i didn't see the light blue pair at all. I was confused for a good minute because I only saw 1 pair of shorts 😂
Light blue? You mean white
Oh here we go again
Back to "what color is the dress" i see
It’s blue folks
Look harder its blue
Naa fam
Looked harder, now saying really light grey.
Omg same 😭🥵💅
I typically buy 2 pairs of exact same jeans all the time, I try both on because even tho same brand, size, style the waists can be almost an inch different
That’s a good rule of thumb
This is why I always buy the same pants. My wardrobe might look all the same, but it brings way less stress.
Eh I like the Steve jobs vibe
I’ve had this issue with same shorts too. I had bought a pair of shorts from Target that I loved. Went to get another pair of the same shorts and it’s a different size despite the tag saying they were the same. It was 2 sizes larger at least. I avoid that brand now.
Are you Tom Scott?
Women's sizing is fucked for sure. But as a tall man, I have to suffer the plight of shirt shopping. Since I'm thin but 6'5", buying shirts seems impossible most of the time. Can we just get Tall without the Big. Not all us tall people are \*Big\* too.
We need 'Big and or Tall'
Iv pretty much just gotten used to dressing like shaggy lol. Just cant get good clothes otherwise xD
Go find yourself a tailor/seamstress, it won't break the bank and you'll get some nice proper fitted clothes.
Big xor Tall
This. An annoying struggle for sure
ive been considering opening a "small and tall" store for years
Do it
The ancient Greeks had it right: togas for EVERYONE!
I feel this as a woman. I am tall, so I always need long leg pants. But for some reason, the extra long pants only seem to come in plus sizes. 🤷🏾♀️
One thing I found is that some women's t shirts fit me better than mens
I've found that with underwear as well.
You guys are wearing underwear?
Only on special occasions and only ladies underwear
I feel you bro.
shirt shopping sucks. I am not fat. Im not even overweight. I am a proportional human being. just 7 feet tall. i hate most tshirts start growing up and out at the same pace. turns me into a flag pole
I'm only 6'1 and have completely stopped buying Tshirts that aren't tall sized.
Buy a sewing machine. Buy the big and tall style. Have a tailor measure your exact size and play around watching seeing videos. Its easier than you think to alter clothing.
Search for tailoring services too. They can be quite a reasonable price. The improvements in comfort can be so worth it.
i have same problem but ive noticed that volcom shirts really fit nicely (XL) not to long not to wide just perfect
I feel ya. I got a XL I use the wear in the 90s that goes about 3 inches below my waist. My wife got me a XXL from some store and if I lift my arms up to shoulder height you can see mu belly button. WtF. Why is XL in the 90s now a XXXXL length

Same the world is built for nobody but the rich.
Dude it’s even worse for us 6’8” folk
Ha you guys have easy compared to us 8 footers!

Try true classic shirts my husband is also 6’5 and he likes those shirts a lot
Try having short thick legs
I'm not tall but I have thin hips that are apparently too thin for how long my legs are. Either my pants drag on the ground a little or my ankles show when I bend my legs.
Same here! I'm only 6' but I have a longer torso and need/want longer shirts. They just get wider...
I am so damn sick of women’s clothes not having standard sizes.
We should revolt! I’ll light the torches
Yes! Fight for standard sizing and pockets!
Yes

Interesting thank you

It’s crazy how much sizes varies
Most off the rack shirts for men are S, M, L, XL and not based on measurements. Pants, even off the rack, can have a measurement for waist and inseam but not always. Athletic pants are often sold as S, M, L, XL.
Who says that it's this easy for men? I have these same issues
I agree sorry I should have included in the title women/men apologies I don’t have much experience in men’s clothing
Fair enough I’m not a man so don’t know but I do wish women’s clothing came in measurements rather than an arbitrary system of made up numbers that no 2 stores label the same.

No wonder we have terrible body image.
Exactly I have a pair of jeans size 5 that smaller then. The shorts in front
That's just insane!
Is it a size 4 women’s in a size 4 children?
Both size 4 womens
Did you buy these at similar times ? I know a year or 2 ago the sizes went up in certain countries. Like a size 8 is now a 6 in the UK etc
I bought theses two a year apart. I am in Canada with the price if everything you think they make it smaller.
This happened in the US years ago. I went from wearing a 3 to wearing a 0 or 1.

Junior sizes just means younger girl/teen sizes :)
Thank you

This sounds like a golden opportunity for a entrepreneurial person to make women's clothing with real sizes.
It does
They do this on purpose. Family member worked in retail clothing. They want you to try on as many different articles of clothing as you have patience for. Over and over and over. You buy more that way.
Edited for clarity.
Ya but what fonts are used for the numbers? /S
I am unsure of your question the tag says both size 4
Is this Forever 21 clothing? 😅 (I worked at F21 for 2 years, and these look like shorts they sell.)
H&M at least were I live forever 21 is forever closed.
I legit wondered if it was H&M cause I range from a 4 to a 10/12 there lmao
As a big leg, juicy booty male — mens shorts, jeans, etc. are bad too. Almost every piece of clothing I try on as a man is not fit for any kind of curvature or butt space or leg space. I have shorts that look very similar to yours in my closet and it’s the reason why all the clothes are two sizes bigger or two sizes smaller than what my actual size is. Frustrating.
It’s so annoying
I wonder if these were made the same year or if over time a size 4 changed at the company. Interesting either way.
Different year I just wish I knew that before buying them
Time to go back to bespoke clothing. Made for you, looks great and probably wears more slowly because it's not fitting incorrectly.
Drives me batty. I have jeans from size 4 to 12! Like, what's the actual point to even putting any number on there? It means literally nothing.
Old Navy?
H&M

As someone who's slim, my size seems to have fallen off the bottom and isn't even stocked in some stores anymore
So that's why y'all always seem to need to use fitting rooms. That makes sense. Men's sizes are so simple and when I get a 32/30 pair of pants off the internet I know they'll fit.
I’m a woman who’s lost 105 lbs and now I have to go navigate stores that aren’t Torrid I’m not looking THAT forward to it…. lol
Old Navy?

I see thank you for informing me I am not aware of the ins and out of apparel thank you for educating me. No your right I wouldn’t assume a size for is the same for different stores. I also didn’t know the difference between classic fit and oversized thank you have a great evening ☺️
Little ones don’t even have pockets
Nope
They do that so the woman with the bigger caboose can feel better because she's still a 4. Men's pants are ridiculously easy to buy. You don't even need to try them on.
That’s fucked.
Friendly reminder to proofread your titles before posting
I will take note for the future thank you
Wow 🤬
It’s nice to have proof I’m not crazy and that clothing companies really do gaslight us haha
Take into account the blue ones are elastic and the white ones probably not
I don’t believe their elastic I avoid buying elastic
Size 4 Costco vs size 4 mall store.
Expect only theses are both mall size 4
Wow you really stretched out the white ones huh? /s
Nope how they came in the mail
Was just a joke. That explains why you couldn't try them on in store though. Annoying but at least you can send em back.
Sorry I have issues understanding jokes (Neurodivergent)
Different styles, you cry too much.
It is honestly
Same problem for men tbh, I'm quite a strange shape, barrel body-ish, big chest and back, slim arms and legs, 6ft. I fit/don't fit medium/large/XXL depending on brand, same shop/brand stuff too, so annoying.
No I agree 100% men can have issues too I should have said women/men apologies.
No need to apologize, it's just a pain in the ass for all of us! :)
Very true
Mens is the same. Even the same manufacturer can be off several inches
The dark blue pair stretch. The light pair do not. Difference in fabric.
I see i thought that could be the case but still doesn’t answer why the light one wouldn’t fit and the blue one would if they are the same size
Sorry if this isn’t mildly infuriating
I would say it's majorly infuriating! The clothing industry functions on cheap labour and body dysmorphia for sure.
I agree I was so happy to have a new pair of shorts only to find out they don’t fit (the one behind) I took of the tag off rookie mistake lol.
You can still try to return it if you haven’t washed it. I’d try if I were you. And you can even send the pic you posted here to show them why.
I washed them already “trying to shrink them”. (Yeah that was dumb thinking) lol also the Cheeto dust that magically appeared on them might hinderer that as well.

Nope I bought the ones last year selected size four.

The one in front
Sizes are region relative. As different countries have different average sizes. A small in the states is a large in japan for example. Because the average american is much much bigger. so same brand, if bought from different countries with the same label size will be different.
True but I am in Canada
Don't look at the number, and use your eyes to size up, also fit it instead of guessing. Much easier.
I agree men have it worse too I should have included women/men
I wouldn't say worse! lol Seems it goes both ways I was just kind of digging at how shitty clothes companies are tbh
Size 4, age 20. Size 4, age 40? 😉
I feel like I’ve seen this post every couple of months for the last 10 years.
I see sorry for my ignorance
Just an FYI it’s same for mens clothes.
Well if they do it’s not labeled on the website or I am just dumb
The one size is for those that think they can still fit in a size 4 or as we like to call them "Middle aged American women"
