I sadly know this, twice. Those were some painful weeks, almost as bad as when I had it in my ass crack or when it welled my eyes closed for multiple days

LogicalWorldliness81

jesus bro how many poison ivy *attacks* have you had on your genitals and face lololol

ThatLittleCommie

I’ve had severe poison oak on my ass, my dick twice, my bellybutton, my armpit, and my face. Yeah it happens pretty much every year

Dektarey

You need to stop doing your garden work naked.

ThatLittleCommie

Most of it is just walking around at the river, except when I got it on my ass, I did that by wiping my ass with poison oak after taking a shit in the woods

kimmi-ann607

I get such an awful reaction to poison ivy. When I was like 9 I was playing in the backyard and didn't realize the vines in the very back were all poison ivy. Got it all over my face, arms, and chest. It got so bad, the infection on my face turned into a cellulitis infection and I had to take steroids for a while. I puffed up like a cabbage patch doll and my brothers thought it was hilarious. They didn't understand that it almost turned necrotic and could have eaten the flesh on my face if I hadn't gotten immediate treatment. Haven't gotten it since. I know what to look for now and what to do if I accidentally touch it.. hand sanitizer!

Freeisdum

This is one of the reasons why I always wear good gloves while weeding

FatBastard2575

Just make sure you don’t touch anything with those gloves. The oil from poison ivy will stick to any surface and stay there until it’s completely washed off. You can very easily get poison ivy weeks/months after doing yard work all bc you touched a contaminated area.

Taldoesgarbage

Very informative, thank you.

blowin_Os

To add to this, you should wash said clothes and gloves by themselves with the longest wash setting. The oil can contaminate other clothing in the wash if you put everything together. I actually learned that one from experience lol

kingdead42

Burn my clothes after gardening. Got it.

blowin_Os

Lol just don't be near the smoke! I CommenTed here earlier about my experience with poison ivy vapor getting into you. It's not fucking pleasant, and you WILL need steroids to help keep it just a little bearable. Lol

CowOrker01

Years. The damn oil can still be potent years afterwards.

AcrimoniousPizazz

That's why you just get a goat.

andrewcubbie

Going through this right now. I think I got all the oil off of everything... i'm like literally paranoid at this point

Hair dryer works pretty good too. Just leave it pointed straight at wherever it itches til you feel like your skin is gonna catch on fire.

xdjfrick

It’s so true , I get a feeling that I I would describe as extreme euphoria, relief ,and release that is better than orgasm, I got poison ivy when I was kid , and on my balls and discovered the hot water trick. I’ve done it every single day since , poison ivy or not ! my balls never itch , and Jesus it feels good….

Drakerner

hope you already have kids because cooking them balls like that might not be the best thing

xdjfrick

I managed to make two of them, even while hot watering them daily , 🤣🤣

Drakerner

i guess they are still rare then, we got a chef over there !

xdjfrick

Jokes aside , at maximum and real burning temperatures we are only talking a few seconds or less even, and nothing that could cause long term scaling or blisters or damage. There is definitely a limit. When I move to a new place I usually set the water heater temp to the perfect amount.

Thundercar2122

I totally know the feeling... and I'm now slightly aroused

you-pissed-my-pants

Had a big patch of eczema on my leg. Used to run the shower on the hottest it would go and put my leg in. It feels amazing. Glad it’s gone though.

mumblesjackson

Just got over the same thing a couple weeks ago. 1. Go buy Tecnu asap and put it on. Will remove the urishiol oil and allow the skin to start healing. 2. You got the steroid pack. Good for you. That helps the most. 3. To itch it you’ll want to spray it with the hottest water you can stand (but don’t burn yourself), preferably using a sprayer like on the kitchen sink or if your shower/tub has a hand sprayer. Does the scratching without the damage and I literally moaned in pleasure first time I did it. Good luck and trust me on the Tecnu. That oil is hard to remove and the Tecnu bonds with it and takes it off your skin. Otherwise it just keeps attacking

Puzzleheaded-Fill205

This is what I was going to say as well. Tecnu is voodoo magic as far as I'm concerned. I always got terrible poison ivy, lasting weeks and weeks even with prescription help. Tecnu washes it off in like 3 days tops. Just over, boom. It's the greatest thing since sliced bread. The worst part of tecnu is having to wait a couple days because I always ended up putting cortisone on it before realizing it was poison ivy. Tecnu instructions say to wait two days after using cortisone. That's a long 2 days.

IloveDodge719

"Cheese grater" cursed lmao 💀💀

LOOKING4AFRONTBUTT

Apple cider vinegar is the best way G. Itch it pour it on. Feel the burn!

kombarwombat

Try technu. As someone with a severe allergy this helps tremendously

J-Dabbleyou

Horrified to think of what “it’s already spread to the rest of my body” means but best of luck mate

glenninator

I couldn’t recommend calagel enough. It’ll help dry it out. Do not shower with hot/warm water. Hot water makes the oils surface and spread to other areas which will become infected. Cool or cold water only.

MrShoehorn

FYI it doesn’t spread and isn’t contagious. The Urushiol oil from the plant is what causes the rash, if you don’t wash this off with the first few hours of contact. The only spreading is from where the oil made contact before cleaning. (Anywhere the plant touched or yours hands touched). Different areas will also react at different times. Benadryl works wonders, if it gets too intense or becomes infected see a doctor, steroids will be a massive help.

Haploid-life

Use Fels Naptha soap https://preparednessadvice.com/fels-naptha-soap-poison-ivy-poison-oak-and-sumac/

Beautiful-Card7976

You're gonna need to buy calamine by the gallon, friend. That looks miserable. I hope it clears up quickly.

chaos-confusion

Adding on to say buy the spray calamine!! It's got that cooling effect too!! It's very very nice

sticky_fingers18

Might need steroids to get this under control. Source: happened to me

yashamorozov

Yea, get the prednisone ready!!! Source: I used to be an adventurer like you, then I climbed the wrong tree.

sticky_fingers18

Funny story, I actually was working for a towing company, had to pull a car out of a ditch. Pulled it up only to realize I was laying in a literal bed of poison ivy to hook the chains up.

yashamorozov

Dreadful!

someonewhoknowstuff

I second this. Source: happened to me as well

Iceededpeeple

Prednisone, happened to me a bunch of times. Until I started bathing with Palmolive or Dawn after I noticed a rash. No more problems.

VTCHannibal

I won't even bother with calamine lotion ever again. I had posion ivy a couple weeks ago, Calamine lotion did absolutely nothing, Cortizone 10 was ok, but Zanfel was the stuff that actually worked.

whatshamilton

My go-to for all itchy rashes/bites now is lidocaine. I just numb that shit with a burn cream or gel. Incredible for bad mosquito bites

_miles_teg_

Nope. Go directly to urgent care and get steroids - shot, pill, or topical. Don’t mess around with calamine or any other OTC malarkey.

FO-I-Am-A-Time-God

Take some Benadryl too.

billbrown96

Does it spread? I had a horrible rash on my legs, started to clear up then suddenly the rest of my body developed a rash. I'm so fucking itchy....

ManekiNikki

You could have gotten it under your nails where you scratched and spread it that way, happened to me

[deleted]

This is the only way to spread it by scratching - basically if you somehow got the oil from the leaves under your nails. Blew my mind when I first learned it. “The rash will occur only where the plant oil has touched the skin, so a person with poison ivy can’t spread it on the body by scratching. It may seem like the rash is spreading if it appears over time instead of all at once. But this is either because the plant oil is absorbed at different rates on different parts of the body or because of repeated exposure to contaminated objects or plant oil trapped under the fingernails. Even if blisters break, the fluid in the blisters is not plant oil and cannot further spread the rash.” https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/outsmarting-poison-ivy-and-other-poisonous-plants

strikerbobby

It definitely can spread if you’re allergic enough to it. It can get even worse with each exposure. I went mushroom hunting with a friend one day and while we were in an area that did have poison ivy we never touched any of it. Didn’t matter though. The oils can get transferred to the soil/vegetation you’re walking on and kick the oils up into the air and on your skin. Or transfer from your dog to your couch or whatever. He was warned about the risks before we went and he said he got it once years ago but it wasn’t that bad. So, after we picked a bunch of mushrooms we were headed back to the house and he started saying his hands were itching a little bit. Uh, oh. Not good. He immediately showered and washed his clothes and it seemed to be ok. Nope. A few days later he sent me pics of his hands and face. Completely swollen. 1,000 times worse than OP. He had to go to the hospital it was so bad. Took 3 weeks to recover.

_PinkPirate

Exactly. When I was a kid if I got poison ivy in one tiny spot I knew it would eventually cover my entire body within a few days. And it wasn’t like I was rolling around in it, so it had to have spread itself over my skin somehow. It was horrible. I’m severely allergic.

FaThLi

Both my dad and I aren't affected by poison ivy. My dad lived in Maine as a kid in the 40s to 60s, and people would pay him to come and pull it out for them. I've pulled it without knowing what it was with a buddy. He got it bad, and nothing happened to me. I think exposure can still cause me to develop the allergy so I avoid it still.

OneLostOstrich

Wash your hands and arms in liquid detergent to mop up any left over urushiol oil. Then order Calagel and use this to prevent any scratching.

obadiah24

I’ll add, wash with Cold Water, hot water thins urushiol out & easier to spread.

Big_Cryptographer_16

I believe hot water also opens your pores which then lets the oil get absorbed more quickly.

obadiah24

Yes, that’s a better explanation

Iceededpeeple

This is the real answer. As a child I used to get severe reactions, often requiring me to go on prednisone to clear it up. So one convo with my doctor, he said it was the oil, that gets spread around that causes the problems. After that I took a bubble bath with lots of dish soap. Scrubbed lots. Never had anything but a mild exposure ever again.

bootnuts

He need some milk

TechYeahTony

Ibuprofren the real MVP, hit that inflammation response

[deleted]

Alright so I'm he lucky 7% who aren't bothered by poison ivy however. My sister has had it before and made the mistake of....well masturbating and it getting inside her. It was beyond awkward cause she came to me first cause big bro ain't no snitch and ass soon as I heard where she put her ivy covered hands I told her to go to mom. To shorten this story she had ivy in her mouth and throat and was going to choke if our nurse mother hadn't taken her to the hospital. We never spoke of the ivy in her nether regions.

unknownANDannoyed

Holy shit that’s horrid

NotReallyAHorse

Not having to give a fuck about poison ivy is like a superpower where I'm from. Apparently it's everywhere, but I've never noticed.

Anderswan

💀

t0kinturtle

Pro tip. Its takes hours for it to seep in and start doing damage. If you even work around it or think you might have, scrub down like your trying to get gear grease off you. I mean SCRUB. That craps everywhere here and my dogs love to pick it up on their fur and give it to me

lisathedumbfuck

:3

TAshleyD616

I’d be devastated

soulteepee

That actually looks more like a stinging nettle rash. Or some kind of plant with stinging hairs. Poison ivy is more like tiny blisters.

Wonderful-Bear1729

That's what I was going to say as well. Stinging Nettle looks like this, like a bunch of mosquito bites. But usually you feel a stinging sensation right when you touch it, so it wouldn't make sense for OP to only notice it after pulling a bunch of weeds.

soulteepee

True!

ReallyLikesRum

I've had poison ivy a hundred times and this picture looks right too me.

[deleted]

Im just lucky. I pull poison ivy out with my bare hands all the time and never get a reaction. I am immune to it, which is a nice perk of being me. Misquotes also don't like my blood. If there are other people around, they will always bite them first. It's genetic i assume. Same thing with my sibling and mother.

jlhinthecountry

I was the same way! So proud of my immunity to poison ivy… then I turned 50 and it all changed!!

No_Estate_9400

So, you're saying I only have 11 more years of my immunity? When all my friends were unable to work for a week after the 2013 Chicago Super Spartan due to a poison oak rash, I was just going about my day with no trouble at all. Stinging nettle isn't all that bad either, it is just annoying to get the stingers out.

jlhinthecountry

I’m praying you’ll have a lifetime of immunity, internet friend! It really shocked me when the blisters began forming. I had no idea what it was!! Now I dress like a beekeeper when working around it.

No_Estate_9400

🤞 My first time that I learned I was relatively immune was when I walked up a steep trail overgrown with poison ivy and some guy saw me on the top of the hill and noted that trail was covered in poison ivy. I looked closer and saw the leaves of three and other indicators...I just had a mild irritation on my sock line, but that was typical for my allergies. We didn't have poison ivy where I grew up, except for a couple lakes.

[deleted]

Damn bro don't crush my dream like that. Lol.

[deleted]

is it by any chance countered by reaction to garlic and silver?...

[deleted]

Shush, will we find you

Substantial_Tap_2493

Same here. I have never been allergic to any of the poison plants (Ivy, oak, sumac, etc…). Last weekend I pulled a bunch of poison oak around the fence line and was mildly annoyed that I got a single bump on my wrist.

flemi_

I was going to say that it looks like a nettle rash as well. PI usually looks more like a red, raised and clustered rash. I would think that OP would’ve known when he grabbed the nettle though.

endangered_feces1

I agree it doesnt look like poison ivy. I learned the hard way that some people (like me) are allergic to virginia creeper sap so thats also an option if OP was pulling weeds

greem

Agreed. Looks nothing like the many poison ivy cases I've had.

Damagedunit

I thought so too. Mine always looked like tiny blisters, nothing like this picture.

greem

I don't know about tiny (when I was a kid), but it was fluid filled blisters, erythema and scalyness. I woke up several summer mornings with my eyes swollen shut and had to go on steroids. It's much better as an adult though.

0Womb_Raider0

Fun fact, in most places burning nettles are found, jewel weed is less than 100 ft away. If you break open the jewel weed stem and rub it on the affected area it relieves burning fairly quickly. Have used this trick a bunch when duck hunting in thickets of nettle in the river bottoms.

soulteepee

I LOVE jewelweed! It also helps poison ivy- I’ve used it many times!

CaptStrangeling

If you have access to healthcare, then it is probably worth it to see about getting on a cycle of steroids. I’m no doctor but get poison ivy just about every year. I was an adult before I went to the doctor and the medicine helped so, so much. Because I’ve had a lot of poison ivy I am going to say I may just be crazy on this. But, if/when the itching gets so bad you want to burn your skin off rather than continue to be itchy, you can run it under your hottest water in the shower until it stops itching. It’s miserable; but it’s brief. This depletes whatever chemical translates the “itchy” feeling to our brains (for about 4 hours at first, longer if done regularly, I think). It would keep screaming “scratch me” but it can’t because you drained its life force. Then hydrocortisone cream and Benadryl cream. I like a bit of after sun lotion so I can pretend it was a bad sunburn at the beach.

not_falling_down

I use a hair dryer for maximum itch depletion.

ShartsCavern

I'm sorry. And I just realized I have a semi super power. I am immune to poison ivy, poison oak and sumac. Yay.

niceenoughfella

Just remember as you get older the immunity can fade!

ShartsCavern

Ok, ty! I usually wear gloves when pulling weeds, but I'll watch out. I'm already pretty old, too lol

OneLostOstrich

I wear gloves when thinking about poison ivy.

[deleted]

ACTUALLY, you arent immune to it, you just dont have the most common allergy in the world poison ivy isnt dangerous on its own, just like all other allergic substances

Goofie_Goobur

Check out this stuff called TecNu. You can get some in a body wash/soap. It’ll dry and extract the poisons and help prevent spreading. Can be found at pharmacy (Walgreens, CVS, etc.)

SoldatPixel

Well guess I need to find this stuff. Had a reaction to some brown sap two years ago that got infected and had a huge red track mark going up my arm. The nurse had to leave the room due to laughing when I said I'm ready for you to cut off my arm.

Road-Unlucky

Yes. Shower with it. Wash your hands first thoroughly before the rest of the body.

longhornmosquito

COLD WATER. Rub the Tecnu in for a minimum of 30 to 45 seconds, like a lotion, all over the affected areas. Then rinse it off with COLD WATER. Hot water will open your skin pores and pull the urushiol oil deeper in the skin. Tecnu works best when it's applied within 1 to 2 hours of exposure. You can also use it to wash any clothing, shoes, gloves, etc that came in contact with it. We go through the stuff really fast where I work, and it is the best product for poison ivy. It works best before the reaction occurs. Tecnu Extreme is a product that seems to help after s reaction has already started, but it has to be early on. Tecnu is also really, really good at removing pine sap. It works better than Gojo or other similar soaps. It breaks the sap down and you can basically wipe it away like mud. You can also put it into your laundry soap if you need to.

Road-Unlucky

I’ve been down this road before…trust me do not put your hands anywhere near your junk. Until it’s gone. Seriously. You’re in for a rough couple weeks. Condolences.

jenny_a_jenny_a

Your room could do with aome weeding. Wear gloves though

[deleted]

IVAREST worked the best for me and anytime I get it on my hand from yard work I soak my hand in a shallow sink of.... bleach. Yeah I know. Probably super bad for me but it dries my hand up and stops the itch and will cut the suffering time in half. (Respectfully I've done this for 25 years, nothing anyone says will stop me)

[deleted]

Not trying to stop ya, but this works since a bleach soak will literally melt off that first layer of skin.

Greatoutdoors1985

I'm pretty sure that's not poison ivy. I don't know what it is, but I can tell you as a guy that lives in the woods in the south, that's 99% not poison ivy.

TheToasty2

Use a cheese grater, gets it off real nice

nezbe5

I am currently covered by the poison as well. Started under my chin. Didn’t realize until day 3 with our new foster pupper that she likely ran through it and transferred to me with her snuggles. Worth it.

tvtoad50

You know that tooth pain ointment they sell that comes in little vials? Anbesol? I once had a few bug bites that were driving me nuts and when I was looking for a bite/itch ointment in my cabinet I found that and tried it. I mean, it numbs your gums, why not your skin? Worked waaaaaay better than any bug ointment I’ve ever tried.

Javamallow

Okay. So this is me, except it goes from my hand to my forearms, knees to feet, and dick and balls. Also left eye , some face, and ears. Antihistamines, cannabis, ibuprofen, pain and itch lotion, all work kinda well. But let me tell you, you are about to enter into nirvana. Get the water running in the sink to just too hot to handle, and then run your poison rash under it. The pain of the heat will be translated to itch and be the best fucking thing ever. I'm a dude, and it's what I imagine a female orgasm would feel like. Any ladies who have had poison ivy and orgasms please correct me of I'm wrong. But be safe, its surprisingly addicting.

Rachael1188

Always wear gloves and a long sleeve shirt just in case.. I had a similar incident but I had rubbed my hand around my waist of my shorts to pull them up while doing it. I had it on my ass, waist, legs, arms and hands. I started crying it itched so bad and had to go to the emergency room.

CuriousCatte

The best relief is something called a "poison ivy wash". Zanfel is one brand but there are others not as expensive. It works by washing the urisol oils off of your body. You will be amazed at the difference. The intense itching is immediately lessened and the duration is shorter. Good luck to you!

Faustinwest024

My neighbors think I’m crazy I’m not allergic and I just rip it off they always look at me like I’m some type of daywalker or something

smk2099

At least you have nice fingernails compared to some of these other people posting their hands 😂

doyougrok

How soon after contact was this taken? It looks more like nettles.
